Sony has begun issuing a new PS5 system software update, and it's apparently rolling out in a phased release.

I can say it's at least available in the UK now, as I'm downloading it as I write this.

The new firmware update takes PS5 to version 26.04-13.40.00, and it weighs in at just over 1.2 GB.

What does it do, then?

Here are the official patch notes (drum roll please):

  • We've improved system software performance and stability.

Ta-da!

It's always a fun day when you get a minor patch for your PS5. I'm gonna need to buy a new pack of party poppers soon.

But seriously, this doesn't appear to do anything front-facing — it's probably a security update to prevent people hacking the console, or maybe it's laying the groundwork for more exciting updates, like the impending UI upgrade.

I don't know when exactly that's supposed to arrive, but we've already seen images of what the new home menu looks like, so presumably it's not far off at this point.

I'll update the article if and when any secret new bits and bobs are discovered.

Anyway, time to get your console updated!
