Update: And now developer Insomniac Games has confirmed that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone PS5 game. The studio will apparently have more to share in the future.
Original story: Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been the source of much confusion following a very vague, and to be frank, poorly worded explanation from Sony. In an attempt to convey just what the game is, Sony Europe boss Simon Rutter made it sound like Spider-Man: Miles Morales would be an expansion included in some kind of Marvel's Spider-Man PS5 remaster. However, that isn't at all the case according to trusted Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier.
"Spider-Man Miles Morales is *not* an expansion or enhancement or remaster, despite a Sony executive's comments this morning, a source tells Bloomberg News. Nor is it Spider-Man 2. It is a brand-new, standalone game similar in scope to Uncharted Lost Legacy," Schreier writes on Twitter.
For those who don't know, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was a standalone Uncharted title that launched after Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It came with a cheaper price tag and it was a bit shorter, but it was still a fantastic Uncharted experience. We expect the same kind of quality from the this Miles Morales adventure on PS5.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales was revealed last night as part of Sony's PS5 showcase, and no indication was given as to whether it was an expansion or a brand new sequel to the 2018 PS4 blockbuster. In any case, it's nice to have this cleared up, especially since Sony gave such a confusing explanation earlier today.

Not as good as a full Spiderman 2 but better than the remake talk.
“ It is a brand-new, standalone game similar in scope to Uncharted Lost Legacy,"
So... about a 7 hour game instead of a 15-16 hour full game?
@thehappyaerithch There was doubt because that’s what Sony Europe said in an interview.
I'm so psyched for this. Can't wait!
Awesome. My PS4 copy of Spider-Man will still be playable on PS5 I assume so makes sense. This stand alone game will do just nicely until the inevitable Spider-Man 2 in a couple of years. Also, the map is big enough for more stories.
I loved UC The Lost Legacy. At roughly 10 hours, that's around the same as 1-3 were. If this new Spider-Man game is around that length then it's a full game in my book. Regardless of if it has the number 2 in it or not.
Exciting! Should be cool getting to use his powers along side the normal spider powers. Still not too sure how soon I’ll get a PS5, but this is making me want one even more... Gives me a infamous First light vibe.
@thehappyaerithch that was exactly my thoughts as well from the start.
But important question is; are the puddles improved?
@thehappyaerithch There was an interview that made it very confusing. All cleared up now, though.
I honestly thought that's what this was during the reveal event, and I assumed it was along the lines of inFamous First Light / Uncharted Lost Legacy. I was surprised given the success of those two games that we didn't see more of these types of product from Sony over the last few years.
@get2sammyb
I'm sorry to be a bit off topic, but I noticed Spider-man was a holiday 2020 release. I was really tired and forgot to keep track. What else was actually launch titles?
I agree that Sony's messaging needs to get better. This could have been cleared up in a simple blog post or tweet.
So it's a standalone expansion 😜
Much obliged...day one hopefully along with the console itself!!
@BrettAwesome Miles Morales, Godfall and Astro’s Playground are the only confirmed launch window titles. Not even sure if SMMM is launch day.
I think there 3D platformer with the fluffy critters is also Holiday 2020, but it’s a PS4 game that will also come on PS5
@TheNewButler Kena is the platformer I meant. It’s a PS4/PS5 title though.
And we know NBA will launch on every console, even on Switch (if in name only.) Same for Madden, that was shown on the Xbox reveal. That will likely also make it, i would asume.
Deathloop is worth adding, I guess.
Excellent news, this makes a lot more sense.
This is the moment where I said I told you so.
Like really it's best to get the info from the studio right?
Instead of trying to speculate from what Jack Ryan says
This game makes a lot of sense, since Miles was a playable character in the first game, and clearly was ready to kick some bad-guy butt. Also fits naturally into the framework of unlocking gadgets and powers again. I'm still waiting for the inevitable "Peter Parker Spider-Man got hit by a bad guy and lost all his tools and powers, so now go get 'em back!" to drop in Spider-Man 2...
that's excellent news imo, they have a system seller with that as well. wasnt going to go in at launch but I've registered on shopto. having watched last nights show 3 times and some of the trailers again I kinda want it now.
Do we know if this is ps5 only or also coming to PS4?
@Octane Looks like Insomniac's response to all that is 'Let's make the whole City wet and icy'.
@BearsEatBeets Ray-traced puddles I bet!
@Tharsman
Sooo, not one single AAA first party title confirmed at this point? Except for a glorified expansion and a sports title? Wow 😐 that's...really disappointing. I'm pretty sure I'll get one during launch week, just for games like Cyberpunk and maybe even Ghost of Tsushima depending on what upgrades they bring, but this is still (at this point) a really weak launch lineup
Looks like the only game confirmed as an actual launch title (not just "holiday 2020") is that Astrobot game.
This looks like a cool idea. Judging by the trailer views it would be a big system seller.
Good, can’t wait for the game and the console
So will it be a full-priced release?
@BrettAwesome the console also has the vague “holiday 2020” date.
But yea, overall it’s a bit disappointing launch window lineup, unless that Ratchet and clank game also makes it for launch.
That said, I think Godfall counts as a AAA title, although it’s supposedly in line with Destiny, a “game as a service” title.
@Tharsman
Maybe. But it's not a 1st party game. Is it even exclusive?
Good news, have to admit I was a bit disappointed with the earlier news around this game.
Fantastic. I didn't want to have to rebuy the game again like some people claimed.
I'm glad they are doing it this way. It satisfies the wants and needs of everyone - those who prefer Miles' or just want more Spidey. It also segues into allowing a Peter spidey game and a Miles full blown one as well, depending on how well it sells of course.
@BrettAwesome so far, yes it’s exclusive with no “timed” mentioned anywhere.
The official website copyright information states it belongs to Gearbox, but Sony is likely footing the bill. My guess is that the game is as exclusive to PS5 as Titanfall 1 as to XBox One. A sequel might be multi-platform.
Hoping it gives us a Spiderverse for some SpiderGwen to complete the trio. That or go SpiderMJ in their universe. Would open it up for a cool Spidergirl time skip.
@Redman35 @Ear_wiG @LieutenantFatman @Oddbodjunior @BigP @TheNewButler @Dange @Quintumply @TooBarFoo @thehappyaerithch Also glad it was confirmed to be a standalone game, was a little worried when some friends first told me it was a short expansion instead.
Yes it won't be a full length game, but if it's anything like Uncharted: Lost Legacy in terms of playtime, should still be a good 10 hours to tide us over until the legit Spider-Man sequel releases, with us playing as Peter again more than likely.
(I want to know more about Harry's condition and if they're really gonna have Venom's host be you know who)
