Re: Sony Shares First Look at PS Plus Extra, Premium Games

koffing

The biggest challenge for Sony is that it’s going to struggle to communicate the value. Maybe at some point — if they do a good job — people will think of it as “there is something there for everyone and there is plenty” but MS has it easier because their GamePass system leans into the movie-going no-spoilers cultural phenomena of gaming by offering their products on day one. That’s just easier to communicate: sign up and get day one access to (insert list of studios). Sony’s version means people have to look at the full list to see if there is more than 1-2 games on it they want to play and do math to figure out if it’s cheaper to just buy those.

Re: Video: Is It Time To Leave Last-Gen Behind?

koffing

I hope this is the last year of first party cross gen. I don’t think having a 30fps PS4 version and a faster loading shinier 60fps PS5 version is bad. I think the past few years have really hammered home how graphical fidelity is just one part of what can make a great game but it’s not a necessary condition. But i really want to see AAA games pushing the boundaries of the SSD and CPUs. I want to see new level designs and physics and AI and weird concepts that are not achievable (or financially ruinous to do workarounds) on the decade-old weak mobile cpu in the PS4.

Re: Reaction: Sony's Biggest Problem Is Consumer Relations

koffing

Ultimately the products they make are their primary form of communication and that’s been going ok. But I agree with the article because (1) it points out simple, obvious ways they could do better and (2) competition is real now. Microsoft is at the top of their game and their comma strategy is light years better.

Re: Poll: Will You Subscribe to Sony's New PS Plus Tiers?

koffing

It’s great to have choices. I am more likely to shell out for PC Game Pass than upgrade my PS+ to a higher tier. It will really depend though on what kinds of games regularly show on PS+. I have been delighted by what is constantly showing up on Gamepass. I had it over the holiday break and played The Gunk, Unpacking, The Wild at Heart, Forza, Psychonauts, Halo, Age of Empires, and more… it was awesome. If Sony wants to deliver a similar experience than I am all in.

Re: Reaction: PS Plus, PS Now's Makeover a Necessary and Positive Step for Sony

koffing

Bad marketing. You only get a first impression once. I suspect the premium tiers will converge to something competitive with GamePass but I don’t see it in this announcement. GamePass just has a clear intent: all first party games day one plus other good stuff that they rotate. PS+ Premium is some good Sony content that already exists and PS Now and probably some other stuff sometime?

Re: Poll: Did You Buy Horizon Forbidden West?

koffing

So busy with other games. I really want HFW, but I still need to finish Death Stranding DC, TOCS 3&4, Last of Us 1, and probably Persona 5R again. And then I need to replay HZD at 60fps. Life is tough! It’s great to be a gamer.

Re: Reaction: We Need to Talk About Tiny Tina on PS Plus

koffing

@freddquadros I don’t know rates but I think handing out small indies is generally a better path than half of a AAA game with tons of microtransactions. I got the GamePass trial ($1 for 3 months) and I have been in indie heaven. It’s so nice to just try a short game and find out if I like it with no hesitations.

Re: Poll: Does Sony Need to Take Action After Microsoft's Activision Buyout?

koffing

1. Sony should stay away from NFTs, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrency and other nonsense.
2. Be the champion of indie devs — don’t let Switch and Gamepass and Steam Deck win the indie market. That’s where you get growth and goodwill.
3. Multiplayer and shooters. Have something to compete with Halo.
4. Make fun games that are joyful. More Team Asobo please.
5. You don’t need a Gamepass clone to succeed. It depends what success means.

Re: Soapbox: Sony's Bet on PSVR2 Is Brave and That's a Brilliant Thing

koffing

I think it’s quite a challenge. Could be a distraction. I think it won’t matter if Sony at least can deal with its other real issues (1) lack of hardware (2) its relationship with indie devs and (3) GamePass. But VR could become a distinguishing factor. I just really hope it offers pc connectivity. I want Half Life Alyx, etc.

Re: Soapbox: PS5's Next-Gen PSVR Headset Is Going to Drop Jaws in 2022

koffing

If it is similar or better than the $300 Occulus Quest 2 and can connect to mobile and PCs I think it can be a decent hit. I would probably buy it. I think VR is cool.

That said, I think VR is a big distraction for Sony which imo needs to focus on (1) getting adoption for their existing tech (3d audio, dualsense, os features) and (2) improving their existing PS5/PS+ user experience and less on making games and development for what will certainly be a niche product. It’s not clear to me what it gets Sony.

Re: Hands On: The Matrix Awakens Is an Unreal Demonstration of PS5's Power

koffing

The whole thing felt like an FMV but wasn’t. This was a great tech demo and the whole Matrix /4th wall breaking is perfect for all the technical imperfections and moments when it was a little uncanny valley. Someone said real games would be scaled back, but I don’t see how they could confidently say that after playing. It had lighting, objects, physics, and player interaction. And few optimizations. Excellent excellent demo. I look forward to the next 5 years of UE5.

Re: Feature: Our PS5, PS4 Predictions for PlayStation Showcase 2021

koffing

I’d like to see lots of weird stuff. Indies. Games requiring weird hardware attachments (maracas, power pads, etc). Indies being allowed to mess with PS franchises (HZD turn based?). More 2 player games. Stuff that is over-the-top joyful like Astro — maybe preview Team Asobi’s new thing. Stuff that connects your phone (in-world murder mystery?). Just go nuts. Don’t take everything so seriously. Playstation is a toy.
