Re: Talking Point: As PS5 Turns 3, How Are You Feeling About It?

koffing

I voted love BUT with caveats:

1. With Sony, Atlus, and others going multiplat I feel like my PS5 is less needed than I did when I got it at launch.

2. My new Steam Deck has really taken some value from my PS5 as well. It can’t do ultra high quality AAA visuals but it still can run most games at a lower price to buy and with a better digital ownership model including free cloud saves.

3. The direction of live service/multiplayer, higher prices, and fewer weird titles causes me concerns.

Edit: 4. This is my first PlayStation and I experienced many PS4 games on my Ps5. I imagine I would rate it lower if I had already played them.

Re: Sony Delays Six Live Service PS5 Games, But Company Remains Committed to Model

koffing

I don’t see how you make a platform locked live service game.

Fortnite, Genshin, all those mobile games I can’t name— the reason these titles make bank is (1) they run on everything so they have a huge potential audience and (2) that audience can constantly engage and spend money.

I just don’t see how Sony gains that level of success especially from their customer base — which based on Spiderman’s success wants epic AAA single player titles.

Re: PS5 Slim 'Not That Much Smaller', According to This Teardown Video

koffing

Overall I think most people will be happy or happier with the new version especially if they don’t have the original PS5.

Pros:

  • Significantly smaller
  • More storage
  • Digital only consoles have an upgrade path

Cons:

  • New feet aren’t as nice as original base
  • Consumer cost went up as Sony cost went down
  • Two different plastics shiny and matte

Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2's PS5 Recreation of New York City Looks Ridiculous

koffing

@Max_the_German sure, but being able to run Ue5 does not mean it’s as performant as Ps5 anymore than being able to run Witcher 3 meant Switch had the same performance as Ps4. That’s the crucial context all the gaming sites left out. Moores Law just doesn’t work like that. A 2022 computer isn’t going to be as fast as a 2020 computer with 1/20th the electricity.

There are people who are desperate to believe that their game/system of choice is going to demonstrably the best choice in every category. And that’s a fools errand. And we should build a gaming community that celebrates games for different reasons.

I am so glad the board gaming community doesn’t demand the best packaging and design and rules and everything else they go toxic on social media.

These Spiderman 2 screenies are awesome.

@Beerheadgamer82 Switch 2 will be somewhere around the power of a Steam Deck, nowhere near PS5 or XSX — so don’t let gaming sites mislead you. It’s simply power — a 10 watt computer can’t beat a 200 watt computer. Yet.

HDR will matter on the inevitable OLED mode and it would be a win for a lot of people with nice tvs.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy with Your PS Plus Essential Games for September 2023?

koffing

I got a Steam Deck and with Playstation games moving to PC after one year and most of the Atlus/Falcom stuff going PC and/or multiplatform makes me less interested in the Playstation ecosystem. That said, I reup’d my Ps+ before the price hike and we’ll see how it goes. Over the past year I think I did quite well with PS+ (even with this terrible month) and I will hope for that to continue.

Re: Final Fantasy 16 Producer Reckons One Gaming Platform Would Be Better for Everyone

Being provocative: Do you mean Unreal Engine?

Computing is going towards defining everything in code. Game platforms are on that trajectory as well. The game platforms devs are picking are UE or Unity etc. The differences between Sony and Microsoft and PC have never been smaller.

This is especially true for game developers that aren’t (1) pushing boundaries in terms of hardware power both small (not trying to run on a Raspberry Pi or Playdate) and large (not trying to get FF16 on Switch or pushing AAA path traced everything graphics) and aren’t interested in (2) special user interactions (the “standard” controller is fine no DDR pads or Guitar Hero gear or the Playdate crank).

If the point of journalism is to inform or help people make better choices, this isn’t working.

People don’t read the full article so when your headline basically says “Sony lied to you” and then the article text is weirdly nuanced yeah, you’ve set people’s expectations all wrong. And what for? Engagement? Clicks? Is this fun? Meaningful? I just don’t understand.

Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance Bends the Elements on PS5, PS4 in 2023

koffing

I think choosing to recreate the show as a game is not a good play. You will never beat the show. Gotta try something else. Make the game as a prequel or maybe play in the world as a side character.

  • Survival stealth action game trying to escape the Fire Nation advances.
  • Farming game set in Sukki’s hometown.
  • Trading card game set in Bah Song See.
  • tactical game battling — where you are the fire nation!

They would get more value out of putting their characters (Little Big Planet Avatar puppets?) in other games than making this.

So many choices! Not this one.

Re: Over Half of Season Dev Scavengers Studio Laid Off

koffing

Also, this is being said here in different ways. Gamers have too many choices and combined with inflation this is bad news for new game makers.

I can’t imagine having to launch a new game in 2023 and compete with both free-to-play, Gamepass for $10-15, and all the games that have been made over the past 10 years. Make a building game better than Minecraft or cheaper! Make a farm game better than Stardew Valley or cheaper! And you have AAA award winning games going half price after a month. Sure Plague Tale launches at $60 but it’s $30 now. It’s crazy.

Game was gorgeous but then I played the demo. I found traversal too slow and clunky and I genuinely didn’t enjoy the interaction model. I actually got lost in the demo and I really didn’t enjoy biking. I was really sad when it was over because I think they had some really good ideas here and it just needed more polish.

@Loftimus. That’s such a hater comment. There are so many more LGBT people than your made-up numbers suggest. And don’t make up rules for what people can enjoy. That’s so 1950.

Re: Preview: Eternights Puts Some Indie in Your Persona

koffing

I’m looking forward to this and I like supporting indies! It’s fine with me if the game has kink but it just needs to not be hateful (eg bodyshaming, anti queer) or creepy (eg age and consent issues).

The next games in this space I want to play are Trails into Reverie, this game, Tokyo Xanadu, and Metaphor. Maybe Xenoblade Chronicles.
