@Lando PS4 is at over 7 million in Japan already, means a lot of people have the system and are looking for new games. As you can see, there are 5 PS4 games in the top 10, with all the top 3 positions going to PS4.
The PSP was already a hybrid system with the TV out and DualShock support from PSP-2000 models onwards. That shows you can enable hybrid/TV functionality and still make it a great handheld.
So that would put the current situation at somewhere around...
PS4: 80+ million 2DS + 3DS: 72.5 million Xbox One: 30+ million (if the EA estimate is accurate) NS: 17.8 million PS Vita: around 15 million? Wii U: 13.5 million
@brendon987 NS is actually tracking behind the 3DS by a lot in Japan. Guess the downside of a "hybrid" is that your handheld will sell home console numbers in Japan.
In the comparable week for the 3DS, it sold 80,000 systems in a week and was already close to 6 million just in Japan. NS is falling further and further behind.
It's a quiet week, but PS4 is still the best selling system of the year and PS4 has the most games in the top 20. Still, April will be quiet after the onslaught of new releases in March.
Dragon Quest games haven't done very well on the NS. First DQ Heroes and now this. Late ports and all, but this is a huge discrepancy to how well they have done on PlayStation platforms (and 2DS/3DS for comparable titles).
@Grim-Tuesday Guess you could say that it wasn't geared to survive.
A new Metal Gear title debuts at number 6 during a slow sales season. Push Square spins that into a positive performance. That's almost Nintendolife levels of misdirecting headlines.
@Grim-Tuesday Even that's not really true when you consider all the "retro-inspired" games coming out these days, from several different eras.
Then there are all the weaker powered platforms like 2DS/3DS, Vita, mobile, NS, which continue to get games. Even PS4 is not the most powerful system currently, but PS4 will still get huge support from developers.
"unfortunately your argument about domestic sales not being as relevant when the international sales are good isn't true. the reason being that international profits are very volatile due to currency fluctations."
Monster Hunter World is far exceeding all expectations. It's now by far the best selling home console Monster Hunter in Japan, hugely surpassing even Monster Hunter Tri on Wii.
And as mentioned earlier, it's also doing better than Monster Hunter XX, which did well on 2DS and 3DS and flopped on the NS.
PS4 is now officially the best selling game system of the generation. 2DS and 3DS are at 72 million currently, so PS4 will go far ahead of them too. It's almost like a repeat of the PS2 and GBA generation.
@3Above Only if you ignore the 2DS/3DS version. The NS version of Monster Hunter XX did very poorly on Monster Hunter standards. You need to look at the 2DS/3DS release to see the full picture:
On 2DS and 3DS, Monster Hunter XX did 1,128,760 in two weeks, and a lot more after that obviously. So yes, that still means that Monster Hunter World already blew apart MHXX sales, even on 2DS/3DS. MHW sold more at launch than MHXX did in two weeks. It's a massive success.
Great analysis in the article. I would subscribe to a "PS Pass", but I would play single player and local multiplayer games through it. Really don't care for online and "service" games.

Looks really good. Count me interested.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Spider-Man Totally Dominates on PS4 as SNK Heroines Struggles
As expected. Question is, how long will Spider-Man stay in the top 10?
Re: Bomb Defusing Party Game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes to Drop PSVR Requirement
@adf86 It already failed so I don't need to want anything.
Re: Streaming Devices Will Kill Traditional Consoles Within the Next 10 Years, Says EA
EA to die within the next 10 years, says everybody else
Re: Bomb Defusing Party Game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes to Drop PSVR Requirement
@Simon_Fitzgerald Consumers already dropped PSVR and now game makers are following.
Re: Bomb Defusing Party Game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes to Drop PSVR Requirement
This required PSVR? What a boneheaded decision.
Re: Poll: Do You Want More PS4 Games to Take Advantage of Gyro Aiming?
Absolutely. If your game doesn't support motion controls when they would be a good fit, your game is an inferior product.
Re: Talking Point: How Much Does Cross-Play Matter to You?
That image is wrong. It's PS4 warm and cozy inside, and Xbone and NS out cold in the rain, begging for scraps.
Re: Team Sonic Racing Officially Announced, Drifts onto PS4 This Winter
Finally, the hedgehog is out of the bag.

Re: UK Sales Charts: God of War's Reign Continues for Fifth Consecutive Week
There haven't really been any big games to challenge it before this week with Detroit and Dark Souls.

@ShogunRok There were some Power Pros games localized on Wii. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Achy1tWGcPg
Re: Review: Rayman Legends (PlayStation 4)
A fantastic game and PS4 has the absolute best version. Great addition to Plus for anyone who still hasn't played it.
@craigun The controller makes all the difference.
Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake Aiming to Surpass the PSone Original
They've already surpassed it in development time.
Re: Japanese Sales Charts: PS4 Falls Further as Japan Suffers Seriously Slow Week
@R1spam Handhelds do well in Japan, even PS Vita. PS4 only passed it in lifetime sales a few months ago.
And the Pro never was Japan's favorite PS4 model, it has always been the Slim.

Good votes.
Re: Minit, the 60 Second Adventure Game, Announced for PS4
@ztpayne7 Don't worry, it only takes 60 seconds.
Re: Replay Over 50 16-Bit Hits with SEGA Genesis Classics Collection
Awesome. Great timing now that Wii Shop is closing and taking lots of Sega games down with it.
Re: Poll: Ultimate PlayStation Character Tournament: Round 2 - Matches 81-84
Kanji had no chance at all.
Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Even Dragon Quest Can't Knock Monster Hunter: World Off the Top

Re: PS4 Quietly Enjoyed Its Best Year in Japan Since Launch
@Gamer83 "Would be a bigger deal if the PS4 numbers weren't very low in Japan for a 4-year old console"
Very low? You want to know how Wii U was doing in its 4th year?
And then we've got the Xbone, selling a few dozen units per week in Japan.
PS4 is also beating more conventional systems like PS3.
It has also beaten PS Vita in Japan, the country for portable gaming.
And it has outsold the NS in 6 of the past 7 weeks.
So yeah, it's a big deal, despite what you say.
Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Monster Hunter: World Tops for 5 Straight Weeks on PS4
@naruball MG Survive was released for PS4. That was obviously enough to discourage potential buyers.
Re: UK Sales Charts: Metal Gear Survive Fortifies Its Position in the Top 10
@Kidfried Konami right now is too far gone to care.
Re: UK Sales Charts: Metal Gear Survive Fortifies Its Position in the Top 10
@Kidfried Survive sold only a fraction of what MGS5 opened with, and 85 % less than MG Rising. It's a huge flop.

Re: UK Sales Charts: Metal Gear Survive Fortifies Its Position in the Top 10
@ShogunRok Fortifies its position? And the whole news item?
It's fair to say that Survive debuted poorly and it's precisely because nobody seems to know why this game even exists, not even Konami.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Nothing Can Stop Monster Hunter: World, Now Closing in on 3 Million
Another good week for PS4. Secret of Mana also has a good opening for a remake.
Re: Monster Hunter: World Actually Broke 2 Million Sales at Launch in Japan
Monster Hunter World exceeds expectations even digitally. It's breaking records left and right. (Or as you might say, east and west.)
Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Monster Hunter's Still King, Dynasty Warriors Continues to Decline
Monster Hunter is a couple of weeks away from 2 million physical. With digital, it could already be approaching 2.5 million.

@Grim-Tuesday Uh, alright? Just saying that people like to play the old games, and sometimes side by side with the new thing.
Re: Monster Hunter: World is Now Capcom's Fastest Selling Game of All Time
I was expecting this to do well, but the level of success has been surprising. And it only launched just now.
Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Dragon Ball FighterZ Can't Topple Monster Hunter, PS4 Still Number 1
@Grim-Tuesday People play old games all the time. Often playing the new and shiny game makes people want to play the old games too!

That quote goes perfect with Big Boss's evil grin in your avatar.
Re: Monster Hunter: World's Japanese Sales Top 1.35 Million in Opening Weekend
Did better than Monster Hunter XX on 2DS/3DS at launch. That's really good for a home console game in Japan.
Re: February PlayStation Plus Games Announced
@wiiware Knack 2 is much better than the first game. Don't expect too much.
