@Lando PS4 is at over 7 million in Japan already, means a lot of people have the system and are looking for new games. As you can see, there are 5 PS4 games in the top 10, with all the top 3 positions going to PS4.

As expected. Question is, how long will Spider-Man stay in the top 10?

Absolutely. If your game doesn't support motion controls when they would be a good fit, your game is an inferior product.

That image is wrong. It's PS4 warm and cozy inside, and Xbone and NS out cold in the rain, begging for scraps.

Finally, the hedgehog is out of the bag.

The PSP was already a hybrid system with the TV out and DualShock support from PSP-2000 models onwards. That shows you can enable hybrid/TV functionality and still make it a great handheld.

There haven't really been any big games to challenge it before this week with Detroit and Dark Souls.

So that would put the current situation at somewhere around...

PS4: 80+ million
2DS + 3DS: 72.5 million
Xbox One: 30+ million (if the EA estimate is accurate)
NS: 17.8 million
PS Vita: around 15 million?
Wii U: 13.5 million

@brendon987 NS is actually tracking behind the 3DS by a lot in Japan. Guess the downside of a "hybrid" is that your handheld will sell home console numbers in Japan.

In the comparable week for the 3DS, it sold 80,000 systems in a week and was already close to 6 million just in Japan. NS is falling further and further behind.

A fantastic game and PS4 has the absolute best version. Great addition to Plus for anyone who still hasn't played it.

They've already surpassed it in development time.

@R1spam Handhelds do well in Japan, even PS Vita. PS4 only passed it in lifetime sales a few months ago.

And the Pro never was Japan's favorite PS4 model, it has always been the Slim.

It's a quiet week, but PS4 is still the best selling system of the year and PS4 has the most games in the top 20. Still, April will be quiet after the onslaught of new releases in March.

Dragon Quest games haven't done very well on the NS. First DQ Heroes and now this. Late ports and all, but this is a huge discrepancy to how well they have done on PlayStation platforms (and 2DS/3DS for comparable titles).

And then we've got the Xbone, selling a few dozen units per week in Japan.

PS4 is also beating more conventional systems like PS3.

It has also beaten PS Vita in Japan, the country for portable gaming.

And it has outsold the NS in 6 of the past 7 weeks.

So yeah, it's a big deal, despite what you say.

It's fair to say that Survive debuted poorly and it's precisely because nobody seems to know why this game even exists, not even Konami.

A new Metal Gear title debuts at number 6 during a slow sales season. Push Square spins that into a positive performance. That's almost Nintendolife levels of misdirecting headlines.

Another good week for PS4. Secret of Mana also has a good opening for a remake.

Monster Hunter World exceeds expectations even digitally. It's breaking records left and right. (Or as you might say, east and west.)

Monster Hunter is a couple of weeks away from 2 million physical. With digital, it could already be approaching 2.5 million.

That's too bad. This had potential.

@Grim-Tuesday Even that's not really true when you consider all the "retro-inspired" games coming out these days, from several different eras.

Then there are all the weaker powered platforms like 2DS/3DS, Vita, mobile, NS, which continue to get games. Even PS4 is not the most powerful system currently, but PS4 will still get huge support from developers.

I was expecting this to do well, but the level of success has been surprising. And it only launched just now.

@Grim-Tuesday People play old games all the time. Often playing the new and shiny game makes people want to play the old games too!

Knack vs. Squall - fight of the millennium!

Monster Hunter World is far exceeding all expectations. It's now by far the best selling home console Monster Hunter in Japan, hugely surpassing even Monster Hunter Tri on Wii.

And as mentioned earlier, it's also doing better than Monster Hunter XX, which did well on 2DS and 3DS and flopped on the NS.

PS4 is now officially the best selling game system of the generation. 2DS and 3DS are at 72 million currently, so PS4 will go far ahead of them too. It's almost like a repeat of the PS2 and GBA generation.

Did better than Monster Hunter XX on 2DS/3DS at launch. That's really good for a home console game in Japan.

@wiiware Knack 2 is much better than the first game. Don't expect too much.

@3Above Only if you ignore the 2DS/3DS version. The NS version of Monster Hunter XX did very poorly on Monster Hunter standards. You need to look at the 2DS/3DS release to see the full picture:

On 2DS and 3DS, Monster Hunter XX did 1,128,760 in two weeks, and a lot more after that obviously. So yes, that still means that Monster Hunter World already blew apart MHXX sales, even on 2DS/3DS. MHW sold more at launch than MHXX did in two weeks. It's a massive success.

Great analysis in the article. I would subscribe to a "PS Pass", but I would play single player and local multiplayer games through it. Really don't care for online and "service" games.
