It's a monstrous start for sales of Capcom's Monster Hunter: World. The game only launched on Friday, but it debuts in the UK charts in first place, and has enjoyed the strongest first week sales of any Monster Hunter title.
Dragon Ball FighterZ also performed extremely well, scoring the franchise's best debut chart position at No.2. It's not only a strong week for new releases, it's also another success story for the resurgent Japanese games industry.
Elsewhere in the chart, we also see another new release in tenth place with The Inpatient, while the ever-popular Rocket League boosts back into ninth. The rest is a mix of familiar faces, but it's nice to see some variation now that 2018's new games are beginning to emerge.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 27th January, 2018
- Monster Hunter: World
- Dragon Ball FighterZ
- Call of Duty: WWII
- FIFA 18
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
- Rocket League
- The Inpatient
Update: According to gamesindustry.biz, Capcom has stated Monster Hunter: World has shipped 5 million units since launch. The publisher says the game has shipped more copies in three days than any previous game in the series.

Why did they put it on PS4, though? Wahhh! Wahhh! 😩
Nintendo have held back Monster Hunter for too long .
@JoeBlogs If you weren't killing the monsters, what would the point of the massive axe be? Everything has it's place.
@Fight_Teza_Fight well have fun paying $4 for a gesture now.
but good to see that UK folks finally show some good taste
@Fight_Teza_Fight Nintendo or Capcom? I don't see why MH4U or Generations couldn't possibly run on Vita. Kinda surprising that BC-provided Freedom Unite remained the only accessible entry on this platform despite being a third-party-supported portable console in Japan. 5 million sales still too few? But that didn't stop PS4 from getting World or Wii U (what were its sales in Japan, again?) from getting 3.
I am enjoying Monster Hunter so far, just stuck with the giant hammer so far, might try something different later on.
Updated the article with a nice tidbit - the game has shipped 5 million copies since launch, which is pretty good going!
@LieutenantFatman I've mainly stuck with the charge blade, but I've also been keeping a sword and shield upgraded in case I need something faster. Really enjoying the game so far
Congratulations to capcom, finally monster hunter is free from portables hell lol. Can't wait to buy it tonight on psn usa with 10% discount code
3rd party games sold best on playstation, people bought nintendo console to play nintendo games, I hope from now on people understand this fact.
Edit: I heard the second best selling monhun game, mh portable 3rd, ship 4.9M lifetime, while monhun world shipped 5M on the first 3 days! That's crazy! Man going to modern console is the best move for monhun.
@wiiware "people with simultaneous interest in 3rd parties AND a generous boatload of free time to spend at home in from of the TV bought nintendo console to play nintendo games"
Fixed it for you. XD I'm also one of the last people who'd buy a Nintendo console primarily for a Nintendo game, regardless of my appreciation of the latter (Wii U might still become an exception someday, but XBX and TMS have all the odds of getting Switch ports sooner than that). And oftentimes portables are "hell" until the gamer gets fully employed.
On a side note, while many folks may boo at MHW not being on portables, it would take a particularly Martian mentality to object to any MH game being on portables like Nintendo's AND on living room boxes like PS4 and XBO. With all respect to the late Yamauchi's and Iwata's skeptical opinions on the multiplatform idea, I personally don't subscribe to any "praise be to exclusives!" club either.
@nhSnork Well, World means Sony is paying Capcom to keep it off the Switch, then surely it must mean Nintendo paid them to keep the games off the Vita
... it's a stunning game, I've been glued to it all weekend... the humour, the tough action.. it's genius! (charge blade / bow and arrow for me!)
Sounds great but I prefer sell-through numbers rather than shipping to stores. The game is awesome and absolutely happy to see it and DBFZ in the top spots.
@JoeBlogs
I have to admit, there is a bit of me that feels a bit bad when chasing a limping monster back to its nest, then smashing it's head in while it tries to sleep.
Funny how I never have the same empathy smashing and shooting people in the face in every other game. Desensitised much.
Best monster hunter ever.word up son
@JoeBlogs If your conscience is giving you an ethical crisis playing MH, you should avoid Shadow of the Colossus for sure. 😉
@nhSnork I'm only joking (kinda), but I'm glad Capcom focused on the more powerful home consoles.
More power doesn't just mean a prettier game. Maybe now that there is added interest around Monster Hunter, Capcom will localise XX to appease Western Switch owners.
@manu0 I don't use gestures so it doesn't matter to me. Better this than loot boxes .
5 millions copies is great but I'm sure capcom doesn't see it that way, let's wait and see
I'm really hoping it placed #1 in the US as well...
@nhSnork Nope, bought switch for nintendo games and indies only, bought ps4 to play sony exclusives and 3rd party games. And looking at the sales chart, it seems most people does that too.
Glad to see Monster Hunter and FighterZ doing well.
@wiiware and that's why student years are labeled "golden years", I guess. XD
I buy games on platforms I can actually PLAY them on, not just collect them for a sense of pride and accomplishment inbetween sufficient batches of holidays. Maybe not focusing on PS4 as a "go-to 3rd party machine" is also why I can associate it a bit more with Sony's own gems there like Horizon, LBP3 or Gravity Rush 2. XD
@Octane I see what you did there.
@nhSnork I believe there has been an Exclusivity deal with Nintendo until now.
@wiiware meh Nintendo should go 3rd Party tho
@3Above actually that’s wrong
Reason: Capcom cared mostly for the Japanese Audience & Japan cares more for Portability
@Derpie1 Then why did they go Nintendo exclusive? Why not publish on PSP and 3DS?
@YummyHappyPills Im speculating here so take this with a graib of salt: its possible Nintendo wanted the publishing rights as part of their deal so it would be less likely that the older MH games could be ported to other consoles. A little like how Mass Effect 1 was published but MS studios and therefore they couldn't just port it to PS3 right away. I could be wrong though.
People seem to forget MH started on PS2 and Nintendo ( or any company for that matter) would want to keep a franchise like that secure as long as possible.
ON TOPIC: This is GREAT news for MH World fans! Everyone seems to love the game and its selling well. Ive seem some gameplay and the combat looks much smoother than what i played in the beta. Ill try to Shareplay it to see for myself but im kinda interested in it now 🙈
@3Above in terms of Tri: Wii was popular even in Japan so y not
DS wasn’t powerful enough to do MH
Because PSP was nearing it’s death? Possibly
Some users here, you know who:
"It's a huge mistake to release it on PS4"
" Not interested on this game"
" I will wait for the PC nazi version"
First time playing Monster Hunter and I'm really enjoying this game on PS4, the king of the generation. ^^
@Derpie1 I actually like nintendo as console maker, I rather have 2 kick-ass console rather than one, competition is good for the industry. Not good for my wallet and time though lol
@nhSnork We always have time for our hobby, my game time is from 10 am to 1 am (usually more on saturday and sunday), so I don't understand the "I don't have time to play games on tv so I have to play it on portables". And my age is 3x so I'm not student anymore
@Derpie1 Nearing its death but at the height of it install base. The highest possible sales.
@YummyHappyPills Yes thats what exclusivity deals are all about.
@3Above I just think Capcom might’ve thought it’d be a good idea to try & get casuals into MH even if it means those unwilling to buy a new console/platform will end up ignoring it
@Derpie1 thats possible.
Capcom is really hurting the game industry though.... since we have Monster Hunter, we won't need to buy any other games for at least the next few months.
It's a monster!
@NathanUC I really have no desire to play anything else.
@NathanUC There's this thing called multi-tasking .
I could probably play two games daily if I had the extra free time.
@ToddlerNaruto but I'd be thinking about MH the whole time... it's not fair to the other games. I'm not going to drink Coors Light if Sam Adams is on the table.
@JoeBlogs One of the monsters is essentially a giant super volcano that is encroaching on the continent. Plus there is a seemingly unlimited number of apex predators devastating the ecosystem; you have to thin out their numbers somehow.
By slowly and painfully slashing and stabbing them with a longsword until they go back to their nests for rest and then blowing them up with explosives.
