Re: October 2017 NPD: PS4 Is Still the Best Selling System of the Year

Mahe

@Th3solution Both XXbone and NS will probably run out of steam sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, PS4 is heading strong into 2018, which looks like it will be its best year yet.

"Also surprised overall software sales are down this year. With all the great titles we’ve had?"

Remember, a lot of other systems are on the downswing. The original Xbone has slowed down while the fans waited for the XX. Vita and Wii U are even deader than last year, and NS isn't picking up the slack (just check how many NS games there are in the top 10). Even 2DS and 3DS are slowing down in the US, while they're doing better in Europe.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Gran Turismo Sport Speeds Straight to the Top

Mahe

@BraveFencerZan You know what? So is the Polygon article and the Nintendo PR. That's how the NPD system works. Even if a game is released in the last days of the month, it's counted for the "whole month".

And again, it's selling so much worse than previous entries in the series. It didn't take off, not at launch, not after launch.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Gran Turismo Sport Speeds Straight to the Top

Mahe

@redd214 Alright, it seems that this is a problem with Nintendo PR, and these sites (several of them amateur or "contributor" sites) just swallowed the Nintendo PR hook, line and sinker, without checking the numbers themselves.

Obviously MK8 NS can't be the fastest-selling anything when MK Wii and other entries were so far ahead of it. Headlines and PR may lie, but the numbers don't.

But yeah, this is enough for this conversation.

Re: Persona 5 Ultimate Edition Hits the PlayStation Store Today at an Outrageous Price

Mahe

@NoxAeturnus Yeah, because Nintendo systems like Gamecube, Wii U and NS have done so well. Why offer cheaper games, when you can milk the chumps who will buy MK8 two times at full price, first on Wii U and then on NS?

Here's why: look at the sales. They could be selling more games and more systems, but instead they insist on gouging prices and losing customers.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Gran Turismo Sport Speeds Straight to the Top

Mahe

@redd214 Here's how much MK8 NS is currently behind other entries in the same timeframe just in Japan:

Mario Kart Wii vs. MK8 NS - over 1 million
Mario Kart DS vs. MK8 NS - around 1 million
Mario Kart 7 vs. MK8 NS - around 650.000

And those differences are just going to get bigger, like they've gotten bigger from launch to here.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Gran Turismo Sport Speeds Straight to the Top

Mahe

@redd214 This is why you should never ever trust Polygon.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/npd-us-april-game-revs-spike-on-gtaiv/1100-6191066/

Mario Kart Wii sold 1.12 million copies in US alone in the same timeframe.

How is 0.5 million bigger than 1.12 million?

Add to that MK Wii and other entries also kept selling faster than MK8 NS after launch. So yeah, MK8 NS didn't "take off", relative to the standard of the series.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Gran Turismo Sport Speeds Straight to the Top

Mahe

@redd214 You've got bunk data. For example, at this point in its lifecycle Mario Kart Wii had already sold around 1.8 million copies in Japan alone, and it's the same story worldwide, and likewise with Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7. How can Mario Kart 8 be "fastest-selling" when it's selling so much less than previous entries?

After July 2008, Mario Kart Wii had already sold close to 5 million copies worldwide. MK8 NS isn't even on the same level.

Re: Sony to Publish Games on Nintendo Switch Under New Label

Mahe

I remember when Microsoft used to do this on GBA and DS, because they didn't feel those systems posed any threat to their Xbox ecosystem. Looks like Sony is the same with NS - with Nintendo out of the home console space and their handheld install base set to diminish with the NS, Sony doesn't seem to be exactly worried.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Dragon's Dogma Lands in Top 10, and That's About It

Mahe

@bbq_boy PS4 is currently Japan's best selling home console (and will remain that way for the rest of the generation), and the second best selling system altogether after the 2DS and 3DS hardware family. It's tracking above PS3 launch-aligned, unlike the NS, which is tracking below 3DS launch-aligned. PS4 might have a shot at reaching Wii numbers in Japan (and the rest of the world also).

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Dragon's Dogma Lands in Top 10, and That's About It

Mahe

@rjejr The Super Famicom Mini is around the price of two full priced games, or a 2DS + budget title, so besides being great value with the included games and Wii-compatible SNES Classic Controllers, it can easily replace a game or two on the financial side.

Might also eat into the sales of more expensive systems. You can buy a Super Famicom Mini now instead of a new system, and wait for discounts or bundles to come along later for the standard systems (like the PS4 Monster Hunter World pre-launch bundle).

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: Dragon's Dogma Lands in Top 10, and That's About It

Mahe

@BowTiesAreCool It's an illusion created by NS's relatively recent launch. PS4 is already closing in on 6 million systems just in Japan, and is selling more games than NS even with its launch year effect still on (few games and no back catalogue, so people have to buy what few games there are from the new retail market for the system).

PS4 game sales are spread over a vastly bigger back catalogue (same with 2DS and 3DS, obviously).
