Monster Hunter: World on PlayStation 4 remains top of the Japanese software charts for the sixth week running. Sales of Capcom's smash hit are definitely winding down now, but it still managed to move another 39,000 copies. Retail numbers are now just 70,000 copies off 2 million. Not even Dragon Quest Builders -- the Switch version being a new entry -- could topple it.
It's been a quiet week elsewhere for Sony. Console sales dipped back to around the 25,000 mark across both the standard PS4 and the PS4 Pro after several weeks of heightened success. It'll likely take another heavy hitting title to push the system back to number one.

Tbh Dragon Quest Builders was a switch port of a year old game, so it wasn't much competition.
That being said World is awesome and deserve the success it's getting.
@YummyHappyPills Salty Nintendo fans i love it. 😂🤣😋
@Flaming_Kaiser We don't really need to do this TBF.
Man nothing can stop monhun, I think it will sell beyond 10M worldwide
Japan is portables land now so I think it will be hard for ps4 to topple switch sales there. I don't think japanese 3rd party publihers is in a hurry to release their games on switch though, the only games that sells on switch is nintendo 1st party games.
Time for PS5 ?
@wiiware Uhhhhhhhhhhh if ya do some research some of these devs/publishers were pretty happy with some of these games performances
Konami
Capcom
Bandai Namco
Panic Button (Switch’s DOOM port)
Plus indie devs were pretty happy w thier games performances
Switch owners are willing to buy games... they just gotta be good & run well. And ofc not have uh any bad PR around em... but also timing matters like January & February somewhat was a good time for 3rd Parties to throw games since Nintendo didn’t have much as they’re busy making games...
Just to stay cynical I still think and you’ll prob keep saying no before Switch they should’ve went 3rd Party... I’m sure thier games would sell gangbusters on PS4 Pro Xbox One Secks & PC
Metal gear survive was a bit short lived. Already below several years old games.
Monster Hunter World will probably stay on that list for a good while. Maybe not on 1st place but kinda like how GTA V is on the UK charts.
@Derpie1 If I remember corectly dragon quest builder sold way better on ps4 and even psvita on its debut compared to switch, I think it's about 100k+ ps4 & 100k++ psvita compared to 28k+ switch. I mean nearly all nsw top 10 chart is filled with nintendo 1st party games.
@wiiware it’s a port of a 1 year old game...
@YummyHappyPills @NintendoFan4Lyf I'm really thinking about to sell my Switch because of the Nintendo users here.
@NintendoFan4Lyf True, Nintendo Life users are evil! xD
Dragon Quest games haven't done very well on the NS. First DQ Heroes and now this. Late ports and all, but this is a huge discrepancy to how well they have done on PlayStation platforms (and 2DS/3DS for comparable titles).
@Grim-Tuesday Guess you could say that it wasn't geared to survive.
Dragon Quest XI sold 2 mil copies in 2 days (JP only). Monster Hunter World took 3 days (worldwide) : p
@PS_Nation haha, we're talking about you guys on NL too! Same article!
@get2sammyb Whats your take on Vita outselling Pro, only by 19 I know, but also without a single Vita game in the top 20 (I checked twice, sorry if I may have missed one.)
Do they not have 4k tvs in Japan? Was Vita on sale. Is Sony handing all of Japan over to the Switch after this gen? Will they need a low end PS5 in Japan to keep themselves relevant?
I know Slim is selling fine but Vita in Japan just won't go away. PS5 probably won't entice them, small game devs could move to Switch rather than 4k PS5. Just having a hard time picturing them abandoning an entire country, their own country, I guess.
In the 20 years I have been gaming, there are only 5 games I have played for more than 200 hours:
Monster Hunter World
Killing Floor 2
Warcraft 3 (and Frozen Throne)
Starcraft (and Brood War)
Diablo 2 (and Lord Of Destruction)
All of them have good replayability which is the most important thing for me.
@rjejr Not sure it's really means much when we're talking 1,500 units to be honest. Basically statistical noise. Maybe there was a sale on PS Vita units?
PS4 Pro wasn't really meant for Japanese audience, and even then it's only ever going to represent a small proportion of PS4 sales worldwide.
PlayStation is an American company now. Japan (and Asia) is still important, but they're always going to design their machines for the West now.
@rjejr
Going to be interesting for sure. I can't imagine Sony ever attempting another handheld, or even a hybrid, after the utter failure of the Vita to catch on worldwide (and Sony is a more global thinking company these days) but I've seen Sony do crazy things so who knows? Honestly, though, as long as Nintendo doesn't go into idiot-mode there's no reason Switch shouldn't be the dominant platform over there for at least the next 3 years (possibly more) regardless of what Sony does over there.
@Gamer83 I don't know what Sony is going to do, I just have a hard time accepting them doing nothing. Another worldwide portable isn't going to work, but one just for Japan? A phone?
And while I do think PS5 is well under way and just your standard PS box under the tv, I do think the success of Switch and the popularity of mobile and the advancements in tech does make me consider the PS6 being a hybrid. Or a portable PS5 alongside the PS5, again maybe only in Japan. Were you around for the 2 years of "what is NX?" 1 system with a dock or 2 systems, 1 home, 1 portable, that plays the same games? PS5 will be WAY too powerful to fit into a handheld, 10 minutes battery life tops. But PS5 will be geared towards 4k, handheld probably 720p, so that's a lot less power and specs. So maybe they can cram a PS5 into a weaker handheld? I don't know, maybe that won't work, but I just can't see them giving up, not doing R&D on something other than a PS5 home console. How boring would that be? PSVR is kind of out of R&D at this point, they need to do something to earn their paychecks. Preferably not Wonderbook 2.
@get2sammyb "Japan (and Asia) is still important, but they're always going to design their machines for the West now."
Isn't that kind of an oxymoron though? Japan is all about handhelds, if Sony ditches handhelds to build machines for the west, then Japan isn't really important is it? I mean yeah they can still make waifu games for PS5 and they'll sell in Japan, but that's not the same as having a handheld. Maybe their mobile division can start making games for Switch, wouldn't that be something?
@rjejr I mean, they still sold two million consoles in Japan last year. The market for consoles is clearly much smaller, but it's not disappeared entirely.
@get2sammyb Yeah, fair point. Maybe the Japanese will see PSVR hentai as a fair trade-off for lack of portability. Nintendo will probably limit that a bit on Switch. Don't need a 4k tv when you have a VR headset.
Gaming forums sure will be boring though if Nitneod is only Switch and Sony is only PS5, and whatever MS does, but who really cares? Guess the battle between the NL and PS users will have to keep us entertained. ugh, kids
@rjejr
I remember the rumors about NX before we officially knew what it was. I always felt it would be a hybrid of some sort because Nintendo had announced beforehand that it was combining its home and portable divisions. It was just a matter of how they were going to make it work.
As far as Sony I honestly hope it just sticks to home consoles. The Vita was an abject failure, the Wii U of modern portables. Just give up. R&D can try to come up with something else, maybe a much better PSN, that's more important at this point.
MHW sales are going to lap those of Splatoon 2 soon in Japan. Utter insanity.
@Gamer83 "maybe a much better PSN, that's more important at this point."
Maybe they'll finally figure out how to let people change their name.
@Derpie1 I heard dragon quest builders even sold 50k+ on ps3. I think it will be interesting to see the sales difference on dragon quest builders 2.
It's interesting to note that there's not much difference between dragon quest 11 ps4 and 3ds sales, althought 3ds sold about 24M (in japan) compared to about 6M ps4.
@rjejr
LMAO! I aint counting on that anytime soon.
@Derpie1 Mario Kart 8 was a few years old port and sold 1million + in Japan only so what's your point?
@JAMes-BroWWWn I think it’s like some 3rd parties have differing levels of enthusiasm
Although hey there already is a hatred towards Ports...
But before this becomes a long BLP esque argument let’s stop here...
@wiiware well it got bigger in time in terms of the gap but there is a loss of interest in 3DS & in terms of PS4 for a bit the Japanese market was not something Sony COMPLETELY cared for more outside of that since the Japanese market is not as big as it once was
But let’s stop here...
So maybe I’m reading this wrong, but what I’m utterly shocked about is the (relatively) poor sales of Breath of the Wild. I mean, it’s the Switch’s flagship title. As much as I read and hear about that game and see the mountains of awards it keeps garnering, to (only) have 900,000 lifetime sales in its native Japan?! That’s got to be a disappointment with the Switch selling like hotcakes, right? MHW has already doubled its total sales in just 2 months. That just blows my mind.
@YummyHappyPills We Westerners love our Zelda more than Japan does, I guess. In a similar way, I wonder if there are any Western developed games that we don’t appreciate here but Japan buys in droves...
Maybe No Man’s Sky is popular in Japan. 😂 Maybe The Order 1886? 😉
Speaking of Dragon Quest, when the heck is DQ11 hitting stateside? I thought it was supposed to be March or April.l, did it get changed?
