Marvel's Spider-Man has swung straight to the top of the latest Japanese software charts, shifting an impressive 125,000 copies. By our calculations, that makes Spider-Man one of Japan's biggest Western-made game launches of this console generation. Sony and Insomniac Games will no doubt be happy with that result.
On the whole, PlayStation 4 software actually had a relatively strong week, as PES 2019 dropped neatly into second place while Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Mars entered in third.
Unfortunately, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy seems to have blown it. Although the PS4 version of the game outsold the Switch version almost two-to-one, it only registered around 10,000 copies, which, all things considered, is pretty terrible.
As for the hardware charts, it's clear that strong software sales no longer have much impact on how Sony's consoles perform on a weekly basis. The PS4 stood still at around 12,000 units, and the PS4 Pro moved roughly 7,400 units.

I thought Zone of the Enders might do a little bit better to be honest.
@toon_lonk1 "the PS4 version of the game outsold the Switch version almost two-to-one"
@toon_lonk1 3rd party games (except indies) sells better on ps4 😌
I’m glad Insomniac chose Spider-Man, because that’s all they’ll be doing now lol.
Also goes to show what an absolute beast Uncharted 4 was.
Beat Spider-Man’s opening in both the UK & Japan on half the install base.
Only Spider-Man sold well. Pro Evolution at near 21K isn't awful but it's not that great either. I remember generations when Japanese software and hardware sales were much better than this week-to-week. Only piece of hardware that's doing numbers is Switch but unfortunately outside of Nintendo's games it seems nobody buys software for that system either.
Looks like PS4 Pro got a slight bump up week-to-week which was probably from Spider-Man, so that's some decent news.
This wouldn't be surprising if it wasn't the Japanese charts. Stuff like SNK Heroines would usually do well enough.
I guess Spidey is the true best girl.
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Yeah, Uncharted 4 was a monster. I know people who don't even like PlayStaiton who bought a PS4 for that game.
@Gamer83 If I’m not mistaken, indie developers are finding a lot of success on the Switch. Some of these types of games sell more on the Switch than the other consoles. Also, a lot of third party (AAA) developers seem to pleased with sales results. Their still releasing games (I know, a majority of them are old ports) and have games in the works. Unless I’m missing some rumblings in the streets (Internet 😄).
@Gamer83 Charts are pretty useless for software if digital isn't included.
That's pretty good for a game like Spider-Man in Japan. Didn't move any PS4s though, so I guess the market is pretty much saturated at this point.
@Gamer83 To be fair to PES 2019, that's its second week in the charts — it entered in first place at launch with around 75k. Should probably have made that clearer in the article.
Conan’s rule at the top was short lived, I see.
@toon_lonk1 I own both versions of SNK Heroines. The physical Switch version and the digital one for PS4. Maybe it has to do with the Switch port - it is horrible! Pixelated and with lots of framerate issues, while the PS4 version looks sharp (though it's not the most beautiful game on both consoles) and runs without drops in framerate. I'd recommend to buy the PS4 version if portability isn't important for the potential customer. (:
Does this mean a "Marvel's Iron Man" is getting greenlighted? It would be cool to make the games connect like the MCU movies.
Spiderman fascinates the world but people in Japan keep on buying more Switchs than PS4. I'll never understand them.
@Gamer83 Same. The only game that will top it is The Last Of Us: Part 2.
I know a 64 year old grandma that will be buying a PS4 the day that game comes out😂. She’s still rocking a PS3 & is borrowing games from me😂.
Not surprised, said this on the last UK chart results, Spiderman will be PS4's highest selling exculsive.
Its just the ideal combination of genre and franchise, and that it looks a blast to play how can anyone resist. (I'm just waiting for a discount)
@Fight_Teza_Fight
Nice.
As expected. Question is, how long will Spider-Man stay in the top 10?
@Lando PS4 is at over 7 million in Japan already, means a lot of people have the system and are looking for new games. As you can see, there are 5 PS4 games in the top 10, with all the top 3 positions going to PS4.
Vita!!!
@Octane "Didn't move any PS4s though, so I guess the market is pretty much saturated at this point."
A fact (or maybe the typhoon and earthquake last week) that seems to be lost on all the "Sony doesn't need a PS5 until 2022 or 2023" crowd. When something stops selling you need to make a new one. And they already made the improved one in Pro, so that's leaves PS5 by 2020 whether the world needs it or, or the games need it or not. Sony gaming has a huge positive affect on their financials, once everybody has one they need to sell a new one. It's that simple.
Not that you don't know this, but a surprising number of people on here seem to want or think PS5 years out. It can't be, Sony needs the new console sales. Once you reach saturation the games can't help much.
@rjejr 2022/2023 sounds silly anyway. It's probably 2020. I don't think they care that much about Japan though, or rather, I don't think Japan cares about traditional console gaming anymore. It's all mobile and handheld over there.
@Octane It's true Japan doesn't care about home consoles any more but they'll care more about a 1 or 2 year old console than a 6 or 7 year old console.
Did H:ZD and God of War sell well over there? They'll have a pretty good launch window line-up if they can get H:ZD2, GoW2 and Spiderman 2 all out in PS5 within a year or so after launch. Japan may not want to buy another home console, but they will to get games they like, just not as many as they have in the past. Sony will never get Splatoon, but Monster Hunter and FF and DQ may help them fend off New Switch. I don't consider Xbox to be a consideration of any sort over there.
@rjejr GOW and HZD debuted in second place;
2. [PS4] God of War (SIE, 04/20/18) – 46,091 (New)
2. [PS4] Horizon: Zero Dawn (SIE, 03/02/17) – 116,997 (New)
For reference:
1. [PS4] Uncharted 4 (SIE, 05/10/16) – 128,724 (New)
Just as big as UC4. I don't think there's a PS4 exclusive that had a better opening week in Japan. Especially not from one of their western developers. Anyway, at least software still sells, that's the most important thing. They don't make a lot from console sales, but they do from software sales.
I'm not sure if all those games could be done before 2020. I think HZD2 will be a launch title. God of War maybe in its second year. But I'm not sure they can get another Spider-Man game done in time, assuming they is going to be a sequel. I'm not that far into the story, so I have no idea yet. But I like to think that this was a one off thing. If it's going to be set in New York again, what's the point? I'd like them to make a new game instead.
@Octane Well I don't think there will be a U5, though another Uncharted game seems likely as Lost Legacy was good. Of course DmC and Tomb Raider got rebooted so I suppose they cold always start over, get Zac Efron to play Nate.
My thinking is Feb/Mar 2020 for PS5, H:D2 should be ready by then. GoW2 a year later but they can market it from before Day 1 like Nitneod did w/ Skyrim on Switch. You could be right about no Spiderman 2. The next movie takes place in the EU so they could always use that as an excuse. Spidey on the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben could sell a few copies fall 2021, that gives them 3 years.
Can't make the Japanese buy new home consoles, but you can certainly try tempting them. And none of those will be on Switch.
OMG Snk heroines selling better on ps4 after all that noise...
It seems like Spider-Man has caused a spike of less the hundred base PS4 and more than 3000 PS4pro’s.
I would guess that people look at the two consoles on their own merits see that a pro has a slight improvements in return for increased cost, size, power consumption and fan noise and therefore mostly get the base model.
However people who asked the question where is the best place to play Spider-Man see that that is the pro therefore get a pro.
