Sonic the Hedgehog’s 2017 was more topsy-turvy than Green Hill Zone. With the outstanding Sonic Mania, SEGA released arguably the best entry in the series in eons – only to follow it up with the downright dismal Sonic Forces. What, then, is next for the Blue Blur? We won’t have to wait long to find out, as the Japanese publisher is geeing up an SXSW panel which promises to include a “world-exclusive first look at what comes next” for the franchise.
It’s worth noting that there’s no explicit mention of any game announcements, so this event could comfortably play host to new comics, cartoons, or other merchandise. Having said that, high-profile SEGA of America employees like Aaron Webber and Takashi Iizuka will be in attendance, so it’s certainly possible we may see a new title announced.
The panel’s scheduled to take place on 16th March at 3:30PM CST, so all will be revealed in a little over a month.

Always excited to see what they are doing with - or more often, doing to - Sonic.
Very interested to see what SEGA does with Sonic next. Last year must've been crazy for SEGA and Sonic Team, especially with Sonic Mania being infinitely better received.
the headline makes it sound like THIS news article would contain the "world exclusive look". (which would be weird considering how anti-sonic this site is)
Make a Sonic Mania 2.
@kyleforrester87 "Always excited to see what they are doing with - or more often, doing to - Sonic."
That quote goes perfect with Big Boss's evil grin in your avatar.
I would love another 2D Mega Drive style Sonic, of course. But I'd also bloody love a GREAT Sonic Adventure 1/2 style 3D game. There must be a team out there that can do it justice!!
@Mahe Big Boss doesn't know what you mean
Sonic Forces wasn't dismal, it did actually play pretty good and was actually fun BUT the problem was everything was short, the levels were short, the story was short the content, the overall package was short
honestly i think most of the people moaning about it never actually played and are just doing so because it what people do to 3D sonic games but in terms of game play it was a step in the right direction it was just unambitious with everything else it did
@kyleforrester87 "But I'd also bloody love a GREAT Sonic Adventure 1/2 style 3D game. There must be a team out there that can do it justice!!"
There are plenty of teams, unfortunately none of them seem to work for Sega 😜
Jokes aside I'd love something similar, just with less giant fishing cats, oh and cut out the 2D bits and give us Sonic Mania 2 to compliment the 3D entry whatever it may be
It would be nice if they ported all the old games to PS4. It is silly you can play the original Sonic the Hedgehog on PS3 and not on PS4. It'd be even better to make them available on Vita, but that seems highly unlikely.
Whatever the announcement may be, hopefully it's something better than Forces.
@carlos82 yeah this 3D/2D combination thing they insist on doing isn't working for them is it. Perhaps a couple of small sections would be nice though, like the NES throwbacks on Mario Oddysey. But they should really just nail the 3D parts before messing about.
After Manias success I imagine they'll lock the 2d Sonic's away for another 20 years
Sonic & Rabbids incoming!
Sonic Forces 2 confirmed!
Anyway, it could be more info about the movie.
@Sensechat Another all stars racing game would be sweet. Maybe Sega could through in some Atlus characters as well. I'd love to see some Persona or Odin Sphere characters personally.
@manu0 Sonic Team is anti-Sonic.
@kyleforrester87 Agreed. Sonic needs to STAY in 3D if they are going to make a 3D game. If they can't make levels long enough because he is going too fast, then they need to just slow the game down. The Adventure games had the perfect blend of level length and speed. Although they were quite glitchy and outdated in today's world, I think SOMEONE could do it again.
I hope it's another Sonic and Sega Racing games.
It's going to be a gritty reboot of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, in which Sonic (Troy Baker) is a washed up alcoholic on the verge of suicide, given one last shot at redemption when he's hired to break into Casino Night Zone by a glamorous hooker named Tails (Ashly Burch). There he meets psychotic mob boss Robotnik (Paul Giamatti), and uncovers a sinister conspiracy that will shake planet Mobius to its very core.
@kyleforrester87 I agree. I would love a return to the adventure formula at some point later on. I still go back to that game because Sonic's gameplay might be the best representation of 3D Sonic, depending on whether you like the boost gameplay from Unleashed onward. Tails and Knuckles played well too, and while I did like Gamma's stages personally, I think they should focus on the main trio, plus Amy if they want. But considering how everyone ate Mania up like a starved hobo, it wouldn't shock me if Sega milked more nostalgia money. It's what the fans want, I guess.
Right now, I honestly think Sega and Sonic Team should step away from Sonic for a bit. They're probably burnt out on Sonic games, and the series could use a small break. Maybe they could make something new to get the creative juices flowing again, or revive another old property for nostalgia money.
@johncalmc That game I would buy (and not just for the Ashly Burch hooker).
Here's what I want:
o Sonic Mania 2
o Sonic Unleashed/Generations/Colors successor (without the cringe-iness and mistakes Forces made) with Chao
Sonic Forces 2: Electric Boogaloo
YoUr tO sLoW
Seriously though, I think it's going to be either the next Mario and Sonic game, a teaser for the next main series game, or MAYBE more DLC for Forces. I think all those are a possibility except perhaps that last one, since I don't think Forces sold that well. And I think we are at the point of the possibility of remasters. Colors or Lost World aren't my favorite sonic games, but both of them are so limited in the ways you can play them, it would make sense for ports/ remasters. Here's hoping for great things!
@johncalmc Can I suggest 'Hog Day Afternoon' as a possible title?
Unless it's another game made by the Sonic Mania team, I doubt I'll be interested.
I'm hoping for another 3D Sonic game, but hopefully better than the dreadful Sonic Forces.
