Re: PS5 Doesn't Have an Optical Audio Port

Eldritch

@Jayofmaya I'm afraid, even as a musician, you're talking about something entirely different to what I'm talking about. I'm saying data going into one end of a cable is not going come out differently the other end. It's all 1s and 0s. The cabling cannot alter the sound quality.
Yes, lowering bit and sample rates can reduce dynamic range and raise the noise floor but that's not something caused by cables. Cables do not have the ability to do that. All they can do is carry the data as it's presented. So a HDMI cable will not introduce noise. Any alterations are made prior to going through the cables.
On a side note, as a retired professional musician (since it seems to matter) altering bit rates will not necessarily degrade sound quality and can instead be a good thing. ie dynamic range. I love dynamic range in music etc, it's why I avoid remasters like the plague, but too much of it can be a danger to your hearing and system and can be easily solved by lowering the bit rate to a point where there's absolutely no discernable difference in sound quality. But that's a whole different topic.

Re: PS5 Doesn't Have an Optical Audio Port

@NEStalgia Wow... just wow. I really, really tried to not reply, after seeing your first post full of misinformation, but then after seeing your second... Talk about buzzwords and *****. "tell the difference between Dolby Atmos"??? All Atmos does is add extra channels for height speakers. It's not an improvement on any of Dolby's already lossless formats. Or are you suggesting some people can't hear sounds that come from above? As for all your rubbish about HDMI being noisy, talk of jitter (yawn, really? Someone obviously reads audiophile forums where everyone's an expert yet nobody has a clue what they're talking about) and whether using a combination of digital cables can degrade sound quality... total garbage. They all carry data. The data either gets to where it's going or it doesn't. The sound may be converted to a different format along the way, if you chose a cable that can't handle the data, but it's not degrading. It's not like making a copy of a CD to tape. That's not how computers work.
And that is simply all it comes down to, the amount of data an optical cable can carry. For Sony's new sound system to create 3D effects optical may not be enough.
But hey, at least you managed to fulfill your quota of audiophile buzzwords.

Re: The Last of Us 2 Outsells the Entire UK Top 10 Combined in June

@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L it's not a good system at all. Also not being shown which you have and which are missing doesn't help. Thankfully I only had 7 missing collectibles. I think if I'd had many more I'd have given up and just replayed. Having to sit through two loading screens on every chapter would have me tearing my hair out eventually. But like you say, a really fantastic game.

Re: The Last of Us 2 Outsells the Entire UK Top 10 Combined in June

@TheArt Yeah, enjoy it at your own pace. As I said to a friend of mine, who completed it in around 24 hours, you only ever get to play this game for the first time once, so why rush it? PS. If you're going for the platinum do yourself a favour. Make sure to make a manual save in the last chapter. As the chapter select system is a bit iffy.

Re: 4K Footage of PS5 Games Will Follow 1080p, 30 Frames-Per-Second Reveal Event

Eldritch

@Kidfunkadelic83 He's actually correct. There's no picture quality difference between 1080 and 4k, unless you're too close to the TV and you're starting to see pixels. The reason you can tell the difference when you downscale on a 4k TV is because you're downscaling. So 1 pixel is then having to be represented by 4 pixels, which of course then makes the 1080 look worse. But if you're at the "correct" seating distance you won't see any difference. It's like looking at a beach. From a distance you don't see the individual grains of sand. Get up close and there they are. The things that do make a difference is HDR and the introduction of OLED. 1080s never had HDR and older 4ks don't. Higher resolutions are just there to allow people to sit nearer than is sensible to bigger and bigger screens.

Re: PS5 Reveal Event Scheduled for Thursday Has Been Postponed

@Akurusu Don't take it personally. This forum has always been filled with its fair share of idiots. I'm still shocked America is in this position after the shootings of Terrence Coleman and Charles Kinsey, both of whom should have been protected by the law, not had their lives destroyed by it. Those two cases alone should have changed everything.

Re: Maid of Sker Proves There Are Scarier Things in Wales Than the Sheep

@jdv95 The British, be it the Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or English, are all condescending towards each other at some point or other. Especially around the time of international rugby competitions. It's all just part of being British.

Also, despite what some others have said, Welsh is the main language in North and West Wales. It's seldom used in South Wales though.

Re: PS5 Heatsink Patent Has the Web Hyped About Sony's Next-Gen Cooling Solution

Eldritch

@TrueAssassin86x Very true... but with the Radeon RX 5700XT, which isn't quite as powerful as the PS5, costing around $400 or the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, which is slightly better, costing around $1300 you'll only have to play for between 8 to 26 years to have saved any expenditure you'd have lost on paying for PS+... so, again, good thinking.

Re: Sumo Digital Has a Whopping 21 Games in Production Right Now

@Rudy_Manchego Ah, good to know. She cost me a fortune. I started playing Everybody's gone to the rapture. I'd been umming and ahhhing about upgrading my speakers and that score, and the game sounds in general, ended up causing me to buy an AV receiver, 3 pairs of expensive speakers, mid speaker, sub woofer, amplifier... you get the idea... lol A great talent. And thanks I'll look that up.

Re: After Sony's Crossplay Kerfuffle, Call of Duty Fans Are Turning the Feature Off

Eldritch

@AlexSora89 As I said to someone else on here, according to stats, only 1% of PC users have a PC capable of running these games at full whack. That's 99% of the master race talking rubbish. That aside they were talking about how if the PS5 comes out above $450 a lot of people will switch to PC because they are cheaper. So I looked up a guide to buying gaming PCs. Best budget PC came in at around $850. And that's the budget option. The rest were pretty much around the $1600 to well over $3000. Hardly seems cheaper to me.

Re: Rumour: PS5 Will Have Shorter Supply Than PS4 at Launch, Delay Unlikely with High Price

Eldritch

@Mythologue but they're not cheaper. That's just a myth. It's amazing, every PC user will tell you how great their PCs are and how they're far better than consoles, yet strangely if you look at the statistics of PC users on Steam who actually own PCs that are able to run all these games at full whack the numbers are around 1% of the PC user base. That's 99% talking rubbish. And why? Because to get those PCs that run all the stuff is darned expensive. Also I think people are generally either console players or PC players. There may be a few that don't care which way they lean but most do. So I don't agree many will leave to suddenly become PC gamers. I have an exceedingly fast computer that I use for my work at home but the thought of playing games on it fills me with dread. I'm far happier sat in my big comfy chair, with my big TV and surround sound system. If it means I'd have to save a little longer for the PS5 so be it. And I don't think I'm alone. But time will tell I guess.

Re: Soapbox: The Sims 4 Is a Travesty on PS4

Eldritch

It was a pain to begin with but you eventually get used to it. And, as @Carck said, use a keyboard and mouse and you'll get the same control features as the PC version. As for the long load times, I don't think that's exclusive to PS4. I think PCs have the same issue. Though also to @Carck I play it on both Pro and 1st Gen and there's no difference. Any possible improvements on the pro were lost by incorporating the upgraded textures. I really wish they'd given the option for lower res and better framerate.
