Remember when the biggest story in gaming was crossplay and not coronavirus? There was a period not too long ago where Sony was under intense pressure from the industry to allow developers to unify their online communities. The company eventually caved, and now no one talks about the feature anymore.
Well, to be fair, Call of Duty: Warzone players are talking about it – because many of them are turning it off! Effectively, enabling crossplay in the Battle Royale means you’ll be pooled against PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC players – but in order to escape cheaters playing on PC, many are disabling the feature all together.
Infinity Ward says it’s issued over 70,000 bans to protect its community, claiming that it has “zero tolerance for cheaters”. But with hackers able to enable mods that effectively make them unstoppable, it’s understandable why fans are turning away from crossplay in order to ensure a level playing field.
One solution may be to add a crossplay option that only allows PS4 and Xbox One players to play together, but this segregation somewhat defeats the point of the feature in the first place. It’ll be interesting to see how Activision addresses this problem, because it only takes one cheater to ruin the fun for everyone.

Called it ages ago.
Bahaha.
Ahhh, the irony that everyone was breathing down Sony's neck to allow crossplay and now people hate it because of hackers.
If you're going to play online on a PC or with PC gamers from a console, you kinda have to expect it to be much more common compared to just consoles.
Well, they made their bed. I said then that it was as bad idea, but hey, it's 'anticonsumer!' right?
The PC is famously known to have literally thousands of players who don't play fair.
Called it.
Cross play should be between Xbox and PlayStation personally there's always been that complaint about the of master race. And you'll find it hard to go against anyone with a M&K and guaranteed better FPS as well it's unbalanced
Do people not get that COD MW matchmakes through input device? The issue isn’t that controller can play against M&K, it’s that Pc players are more likely to hack.
If only you could do the same with campers...
I still side with Sony on the issue. Now that its allowed I don't see gamers pressuring these companies to add the feature. And also, some people don't even want to use the feature they were clamoring for.
I have zero issues with Xbox players but I turn off cross play because of pc players are cheating *****
The joys of the 'PC master race' - able to mod and hack games!!! Its one of many reasons I prefer to play on console as I have no interest in playing modded let alone playing MP games with hackers.
As far as I am concerned, Cross-play in general is a 'great' thing BUT should NOT allow any hacked/modded game be allowed in the same lobby as any players on console. If I had my way, ANY modded/hacked game would be blocked from playing online at all until they are completely disabled or at the very most, only able to access lobbies with gamers who have the same mods/hacks enabled....
@nessisonett
No, the input based matchmaking is borked. You will still play against people on M&K from time to time if you have crossplay enabled and it's a little irritating. If I see people with M&K I'll back out of the lobby in standard multiplayer, but sometimes I don't and it's frustrating to get play against them. In Warzone, though, it's almost impossible to tell with 150 people, so I just end up disabling crossplay. I don't care if I have to wait a little longer. It's not worth it, and I don't have any friends on PC that play CoD.
However, the cheating issue wasn't a problem until Warzone (it's F2P after all), and most people are completely oblivious, or willfully ignoring, that fact.
As PC gamer, I NEVER play competitive online games with it.
As was said above, PC players are cheating ****s, and I'd even go further and say they're ignorant ****heads.
Bannerlord is awesome though, and I love modding Skyrim, so whatever! Haha
"One solution may be to add a crossplay option that only allows PS4 and Xbox One players to play together, but this segregation somewhat defeats the point of the feature."
Adding PC players to crossplatform games is what defeats the purpose.
When the dreamcast came out they released crossplay Quacke 3 on it with PC players. within a day the maps where void of dreamcast/console players. Now that's a long time ago and even then it just takes a common sense to realize that this wont ever work.
@Constable_What It’s the same with CSGO, the paywall used to make cheaters less common than other games. When it went F2P, it suddenly got a whole lot easier and the game suffered for it. I have to use crossplay cause I play with my brother, him on PS4 and me on PC. I think what’s happening is that if you use squad fill, if somebody added in your squad is a M&KB player then you’ll be stuck playing against a mix. If you play solo, you really should just be coming up against controller players.
@nessisonett You can't use squad fill in multiplayer, and, yeah, you're right you should really only be able to match against other controller players but that isn't the case.
Why?
Because of the horrible skill based matchmaking, that's why. If you have a few too many good matches you'll get matched with people around your "skill" irrespective of their input device.
Same goes for Warzone. It's borked and it has been since launch because of the SBM. Also, what kind of bullcrap is that that in order to play with a full squad that filling in another player or two makes the lobby matchmaking automatically fill in with K&B players?
If you really think about that, that isn't any better.
The cheaters are bad in Warzone right now because of it going F2P. It's essentially F2Cheat. Awful.
Imagine sucking so much you need hacks and mods to actually stand a chance online.
Maybe with PS5 there'll be a simple, compulsory requirement for devs to implement a checklist of platforms you wish to include in cross-play. Maybe they can even implement it at system level.
PC Master Race.
So Master it cheats its way into anything.
I mostly play from PC (with PS4 and Xbox friends), so I think this is lame. They should figure out better anti-cheat measures so legit players won't be given a bad name. But anyway...cheaters SUCK!
I said at the time this was a bad idea because of PC cheaters and people in here told me I was talking rubbish. Others even had the gall to say PC users don't cheat. This was around the time The Division was falling apart due to cheaters.
A prime example of 'Be careful what you wish for...'
Shame you can't choose which crossplay group to play with, keep the Xbots in but drop the PC cheats.
PS4 playing with Xbox and not PC doesn’t defeat the point of cross play.
I don't care about cross-play and never will, all I want is cross-save for single player games so I can play on ps4 and continued it on pc. It's all marketing from microsoft because they have the least players, and all the gaming community fall for it.
Sony should make cross-play toggle on OS level setting and set the default to off, let the player turn on the option themselves if they want to cross-play.
And this is exactly why I do not play on PC
It should have been PS4 and Xbox One cross play only. I am one of those that have no choice but to play cross play if I want to play with my friends as I own a PS4 and they have Xbox ones. Sadly it means that I have to put up with cheaters as well.
Wait a lot of people gave Sony hell for not having cross play including pushsquare now you guys don’t even want to use the feature.
exactly, PC will always be full of filth, no thanks
A: Console crossplay only (maybe a platform checkbox) would be a good option.
B: CS GO matches people on the free tier with each other to avoid cheaters making throwaway accounts.
I see PS is still pushing the anti-cross play agenda. 😕 I see no problem enabling the option to play with PC users or not; I'd think of it as selecting regions. Play with locals, or include the world? That option exists is many games, so PC/Console mix yes/no could easily be done.
Instead, we get the Sony fans trying to feel vindicated that one crappy COD game is supposed to define the cross play experience. As one who has friends on various devices, the feature to play together with Switch/PS4/XBO is much welcomed.
@nessisonett this is absolutely not true. In warzone it absolutely matches with mouse and keyboard. You can see it in the lobby pregame.
That's disheartening, as I play on PC, but with controller.
That makes the player pool much smaller (if non existant), since most PC players are using k+m.
I really blame Activision and the devs for this. As I don't see any option readily available in game to report suspected cheaters. Playing other fps games, there are option readily available from the menu to report cheating or network manipulation.
@Trajan
I have't tried warzone, but playing the rest of MP, the game is supposed to match players based on their input type. I play on PC with a controller, and nearly always wind up in lobbies with console players. Don't think I've ever come across another battle.net user in a lobby.
@Bubsbud I have had it happen in MP as well. I play on crossplay so I can play with friends who own Xboxes we have seen mouse and keyboard users in the pregame lobby as well. We just leave that lobby when that happens. I think what it looks first for connection strength, then input device.
@EVIL-C Actually Xbox players have complained as well.
@Eldritch
I don't think that is necessarily limited to PC players though. COD has generally been one of the most hacked games over the years, since the first MW on console. I think cheating is more rampant with the COD community at large. I always felt that when playing on PS3 in past (which is why I always opted to play on Xbox) . It's just a matter that this game offers crossplay, and PC is easier to cheat with.
@thefirst You're full of it.
Sony and PSN have been notorious over the years for being very lax in it's cheat detection, and players manipulating the systems. I've always avoided playing MP at all on PSN, because cheating felt more rampant. MS does a much better with cheat detection on XBL.
The issue with PC cheating though, is that it's not implemented at the service level, the way XBL and PSN are/should be doing it. The issue falls entirely on the devs to handle in game with PC, as I'm not away of battle.net offering the same kinds of anti cheat detection, the way XBL & PSN do.
Imagine having so little control in your life that the only way you could feel powerful was by cheating in a Call of Duty game.
Cross play should be between consoles anyway. Segregate the "PC Elite" lol. Let all the cheaters just play with each other. Come on Duty. Do the right thing- allos cross play minus PC as an option.
There should be boxes to check for crossplay platforms. Only want console just check playstation and xbox. You want all 3 expect cheating from PC.
This is exactly what we naysayers said would happen! Games on PC are essentially a completely different game than that of console. I play ESO on PS4 and when I saw my buddy play on PC and the millions of hacks/mods he has installed I wondered how the developers allow them to play online with all of them.
@Deadlyblack well, most people just wanted to play with their xbros not the "master race" of folks. O personally don't mind it. I don't play warzone, and don't usually have a problem with cheaters in regular mp. I think I ran into wallhackers a couple times, but that's it.
@nessisonett not true because i was paired with PC players that have M&K enabled
Cheaters do really ruin the game bro! Also, it's the people that are doing it, why are you guys keep mentioning the "PC Master Race" thing? smh!
@Eldritch They still do it's called moving on to The Division 2
@kabal82 oh I don't disagree. There are people who will cheat whatever the platform. I suppose the main difference is console players have to get creative and find bugs to extort whereas on PC cheats are usually purpose built.
@Nakatomi_Uk lol I really enjoyed the first game, despite all the issues, but 2 didn't appeal to me. So not really taken much notice of the goings on. I'm guessing all the same issues rehashed?
i had crossplay turned off day one. as a console player its well known you are gonna be cannon fodder for pc players with mouse/keyboard. and then you have the pc cheaters to deal with too.
and another thing crossplay is the troan horse for always online and live services. becouse it makes it more easy to monetize you as a player on all platforms for these companies. crossplay is just a bad idea from start.
@gollumb82 "If only you could do the same with campers..."
thats why i only play dominations now, when you play that you actually have to run and gun to win. and it also have none of them big maps you have to run forever to get anywhere. i f**king hate battlefield.
@EVIL-C If it ruins the experience who could blame them.
And of course you guys just had to give these news a "a-ha, we were right in saying Sony doesn't need crossplay" spin. Um, no?
Cross-play can be abused by PC cheaters, yes. That doesn't automatically make cross-play a bad thing.
"One solution may be to add a crossplay option that only allows PS4 and Xbox One players to play together, but this segregation somewhat defeats the point of the feature in the first place."
Turning it off creates segregation and defeats the purpose too...
It's simple. Add in four options
1) Full crossplay.
2) Gamepad only
3) Console only
4) Off
Now players can have crossplay if they want it, or turn it off, or just avoid being destroyed by m/k or pc cheaters without losing access to xbox friends or a larger player population.
Crossplay and cross saves are great features. Personally I've always felt crossplay was better suited to co-op and asymmetrical MP games, but there have been hundreds of times that one friend has the game you're trying to play, on a different system.
@xRetrox
Because PC elitists became a parody of themselves as soon as someone uttered "PC master race" unironically. I can't even think of that sentence being said without the slightest trace of irony due to the obvious drawbacks there are to PC gaming.
(Preemptive edit: In case anyone calls me out on not elaborating the drawbacks, here goes. A gaming PC can be more powerful than any console, provided its user keeps investing in upgrades. Meanwhile, consoles set a cap for what they can and can't do, meaning all software houses have to adhere to each standard, making console gaming insanely cheaper than any PC.)
@Richnj
Thanks for being the voice of reason. And prepare for backlash for that alone.
@Deadlyblack
"the irony that everyone was breathing down Sony's neck to allow crossplay and now people hate it because of hackers"
Unless you have proof that they're the same people, then no, there is no irony here.
The ones crying the loudest could well be those who hated the idea of cross play to begin with. Also COD has been cross play since launch, and its only an issue now?
So one game, many months after release is having a few issues?
Hardly damming is it?
@EVIL-C
^^^^This guy gets it ^^^^
@AlexSora89 As I said to someone else on here, according to stats, only 1% of PC users have a PC capable of running these games at full whack. That's 99% of the master race talking rubbish. That aside they were talking about how if the PS5 comes out above $450 a lot of people will switch to PC because they are cheaper. So I looked up a guide to buying gaming PCs. Best budget PC came in at around $850. And that's the budget option. The rest were pretty much around the $1600 to well over $3000. Hardly seems cheaper to me.
PvE games should have cross-play (e.g. PvE modes of the looter shooters), but PVP should have options like "cross-console" and "all platforms".
I am all for cross-play, but not regarding PVP.
I still prefer to play Battlefront 2 on my PS4 over my PC, just because of cheaters.
They should allow the user to be able to choose which platforms they choose to cross play with. Have one choice be "console" which will include PS4 and Xbox One and the other selection be "all."
@nessisonett matching isn't by controller. I get mouse and controller players in my lobbies, sometimes it becomes homogenous, but it's normally an even mix of m&k and console players.
Christ knows what it actually bases off, ping and misery I think.
a toggle for platforms where you select which people you want to crossplay with shouldn't be that much of a problem, no? inb4 it's only 2020 and the technology isn't there yet...
