Re: For the First Time Ever, the West Is Caught Up with Falcom's Massive Trails RPG Series

I'm way behind all installments since I've only started with the Trails in the sky 1st chapter remake, but this is great news nonetheless.

And since I know there are people like me out there who find it difficult to get into this franchise knowing there are more than 10 installments to play in order to grasp the entire story, my advice to you all is: just start playing to enjoy these games and ignore that feeling of being overwhelmed since this is a great modern but old school JRPG which any fan of the genre appreciates.

@Jammer Yeah, I lost so much time with my pictos loadouts. BUT, in the new patch you can apparently save your pictos loadout which is a quite helpful feature but I didn't come around to try the verso update.

It's not lazy using an optimise option, believe me. Stranger of paradise has sooo much loot that it would become unmaganable without it. But it's just that kind of a game (something like Diablo 3).

@Jammer Sorry for the late reply, I was away for some time.

Stranger of paradise, for me at least, is a 7/10 type of game which means it's really fun but not a standout masterpiece. Some of the cutscenes have hilarious moments and Jack is a unique but meme-able character.

The gameplay is stylish, not Devil May Cry stylish, but you can feel the hits. Especially, the finishers which are really satisfying. I was actually overwhelmed with the amount of jobs which you can unlock early on where each job plays very differently so I didn't know what to choose. The key here is not to get anxiety from the amount of choice, but just to choose a job that you would like to try and you'll get through the game with it since it's not that hard.

There are also some other gameplay mechanics that get thrown at you, like the soul shield and parry but the gist of it is that you need to land normal attacks and soul shields to accumulate MP which are needed for special skills.

I also felt the need to unlock the most advanced jobs as soon as possible, but I would not recommend to do that, but instead choose a job and then naturally progress through its skill tree. To unlock an advanced job you need to fill the skill tree for a couple of basic jobs (to get Knight, you need to do unlock Knight skill orb in Greatsword and Mage job skill trees. That's actually not correct, but I'm just putting an example here).

Also, what I found to work the best for me when unlocking jobs is just to unlock the job orbs directly, meaning, instead unlocking all the orbs which lead to the job orb, you can unlock the job orb directly. It costs 8 AP but then you get that orb and all before it (which I found really weird).

You'll also get a lot of loot from each enemy encounter. My tip here is to just go to the battle settings and press "optimize". It will really save you a lot of time.

What I also found as a con is that there are no towns and NPCs in a traditional RPG way: you have a list of missions and a single town which you can't explore but you select the people you want to talk to from the list menu.

I would just urge you not to google anything like I did, because somehow google spoiled the entire plot in one sentence when it suggested a different search for me, a search unrelated to mine. So if you need anything, just go to the game's wiki, gamefaqs or youtube directly.

So the point here is that it is not a must play game, but it's a game that will keep you occupied for 25-30 hours (even longer if you want to go the Diablo route of higher difficulty and loot) and it is fun to play. I'm actually half way through it and got a bit fed up with it, but I will finish it soon.

I tried a couple of games but nothing has stuck.

The list is:

  • Uncharted Drake's Fortune
  • Shadows of the damned
  • Marvel's Midnight suns
  • Death Stranding
  • Forspoken
  • FF Origins: Stranger of paradise
  • Metaphor ReFantazio

As you can see the list is diverse and full of 7/10 games as well as some masterpieces. So the problem is in me apparently.

I'm looking for a cosy game to play before bedtime on my PS Portal so later tonight I'll pop the last sucker in: Trails in the sky 1st chapter remake.

I wish you all the very best for this new year and I hope you'll wish my weird brain good luck so that Trails stick since everything else failed.

Leave behind your woes,
Stay ahead of your foes,
Keep true to your bros,
Put them before any ...

@TimeDelayedGamer Thanks for the heads up, mate. I decided to do them in chronological order since I'm aware that those older entries are not as grandiose as the newer ones. Nathan deserves to be played as intended so I'll enjoy them one by one. And I hope to experience the Pulse Explore buds to their fullest, but I'm not sure if the PS4 trilogy has 3D audio or other fancy audio stuff implemented.

It's end of the year so a confession feels right. I have never beaten an Uncharted game so I'll start with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. High quality game which doesn't take long to beat but has a good story, pleasant gameplay, nice visuals and audio to pair with the Pulse Explore buds. Have a great weekend, my dear enthusiasts.

Tomorrow I'll have a couch coop session with my friends (yes, I actually do have them) where we'll continue the tradition of anually beating at least one Tony Hawk game and now it's time to finally unbox Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4. I'll also throw in some Double Dragon Revive and Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection for mixing things up a bit.
