Sony has confirmed it's publishing a 400-page art book documenting 30 years of PlayStation history to mark the brand's anniversary.
The tome will release in Spring 2026, and it's available to pre-order now from Read_Only Memory. It costs £95, or there's a "The First 30 Years" Deluxe Edition for £245, of which there are only 1994 copies on offer.
Here's how Sony pitches the purchase on the PlayStation Blog:
Players will get a glimpse into never-before-seen prototypes, concept sketches, and design models that shaped hardware development at Sony Interactive Entertainment. From daring early designs to the iconic consoles and controllers that defined gaming culture for millions, PlayStation: The First 30 Years is a 400 page visual journey through PlayStation history that gives fans a rare glimpse into the brand’s evolution through the generations.
The book is primarily a visual deep dive into the history of PlayStation, and will showcase "never-before-seen consoles, controllers, and design studies – from experimental early mockups that never left the studio to the finely honed forms of the PlayStation console through to the PlayStation 5 console".
In terms of text, you'll gain "insights" from PlayStation veterans Ken Kutaragi, Teiyu Goto, and Yujin Morisawa, who share "the creative and technical decisions behind some of the most iconic hardware in gaming history".
Alongside the art book, Sony is also collaborating with Reebok on a commemorative pair of trainers. "The PlayStation x Reebok collection features three sneakers, each connected to one of PlayStation’s original launch regions: the InstaPump Fury 94 for Japan, Pump Omni Zone II for the U.S. and the Workout Plus, for the United Kingdom." The shoes will be available from next month.

Oh aye very nice.....£95!! (Tea splutters from mouth)
It's $125 USD + $20 shipping. Total of $145 USD for us Americans. As cool as this looks, not worth it for that crazy price. It's a book.
That prototype PS1 looks like one of those pretentious faucets you’ll find in the bathroom of an upscale restaurant. Still looks better than the PS5’s design :/
Like most things Xbox playstation and Nintendo try to sell us it's overpriced!
But not nearly as bad as other things!
£95 or in my currency would be 2.1 million IDR. Counting tax and shipping, probably 3 million IDR...hot dang. I could get a couple of brand new PS5 games with that money 😮💨
sigh...this hobby became more and more expensives. The book looks nice though.
I guess I’ll save up for the 50th anniversary book. Their greed is shameless.
Would be cool if they made new games in some of these old series, which they could sell for less than the book.
when you have companies such as bitmap books putting out exquisite products, such as the 652 page "guide to japanese role playing games" for $67CAD/$48USD, it is difficult not to cringe at the asking price of this playstation book. sony is exclusively targeting the wealthy collector here and dismissing its real fans. what else is new?
The fact that I haven't purchased a new book in over 10 years, maybe I could splash out? It looks nice, but £95 is just ALOT
I can't read but I will buy it because it's limited and expensive.
I’ll just download free wallpapers lol.
Pass. Nice design but wish there was an affordable option.
Shouldve given the licence to bitmap books, their stuff is excellent and also reasonably priced , nearly 100 quid for this , like why
Would love a copy, but that price is holding me back.
The book sounds nice. The price? Not so much…
Two brand new games or one book full of artwork that I could just download for free.
Ooh! Decisions!
I’ll have too wait for the cheaper paperback
As someone who was there in 1994 with a Japanese import PlayStation (complete with the tiny Japanese controllers!) this was too nostalgic to not purchase straight away, £95 or not!
@Porco Seconded. The guide to Japanese RPGs is a beautiful book and priced very fairly. If this had been a similar price I would have bought it, but this is simply too much. I've been hoping Bitmap Books do a playstation collab for ages.
I did buy the visual history of Playstation book by 2 Old 4 Gaming last year off kickstarter (he has been featured on Push Square multiple times for his playstation books), and that gives a good overview of the brand over the past 30 years.
Link isn't working on here, but you can still pick up for 33 pounds on his Etsy store
Should give me back the PS1 start up for my PS5 again but fix it so it works from rest mode too
None of the other art books cost £95 even for PS games, I’ll possibly one to get one at some point but it’s still fairly pricey though.
Only one I know costs an absolute fortune now is the MGS1-4 art book but I’m sure none of the others cost over £70 though
What makes me unsure about the 400 page book is some pages inside are essentially blank, having only a caption for the other page.
The collector's edition is almost 3X the cost for a beautiful box for the book and minimalistic binding of the book.
@Rob_230 a bitmap books/sony collaboration would be awesome!
thanks for the book suggestion. it looks neat!
There's also a book coming out from Jeremy Parish called "-30- A PlayStation Retrospective," for $40, published by Limited Run.
I notice a lot of blank space. I get that it's artsy, but 95 quid for that? Archive footage? I'll watch it in a web search...
People must have money go burn , 95 for a book is crazy, wouldnt pay above 50 for an art book 😂
