Re: Bungie Delays Marathon Indefinitely, No New PS5, PC Release Date Given

wildcat_kickz

I seem to be part of a minority that is actually looking forward to Marathon, but these guys better have Destiny 3 cooking in the background or else they're in a lot of trouble.

Marathon was never going to hit the same way Destiny did. Extraction shooters just don't have that mass-market appeal and if they were betting the farm on Marathon being a massive hit, then the execs at Bungie are even stupider than we all thought.

Re: PS6's Rumoured Handheld Is Getting More Tangible by the Day

wildcat_kickz

@LogicStrikesAgain Sorry, I may not have articulated my point well. What I meant was I don’t know if they’d ever release a game only on the handheld. It would/should release simultaneously on console. They very well may ask devs to target the handheld, spec wise, but I don’t think they’d want to give up potential sales by not releasing the game on the larger platform. Having an isolated library, at least to me, seems like a dead end when unified libraries seem to be what’s most important to most people.

Re: PS6's Rumoured Handheld Is Getting More Tangible by the Day

wildcat_kickz

@LogicStrikesAgain I'd argue that no dev would want to do that. They could target the specs for the handheld, but one of the main reasons that the Vita died was the segmented library. Any title that releases for the handheld would have to have parity with consoles, though I could see a scenario where some games are released for console that can't run on the portable.

Re: Switch 2 Can't Achieve a Great Experience on Big Screens, PS5 Boss Implies

wildcat_kickz

@LordAinsley Totally agree. I worry Sony and Microsoft are going to invest too much into this vertical and only get disappointed.

I have both a Switch Lite and Portal, but for Switch, I pretty much only use it on flights or when I'm travelling and for Portal, I sometimes play in bed or when someone else needs the TV. Either way, they're pretty limited use cases and I would always prefer to play on the TV.

Edit: As long as Sony and Microsoft treat the handhelds as ancillary, I think we're good, but if they think they're going to move Switch level units, they're going to have another thing coming.

Re: MindsEye (PS5) - GTA Producer's Latest Is a Futuristic Faceplant

wildcat_kickz

Just from the screenshots in this review, the world looks so empty and boring. Even Mafia 3 (the other game I've seen that lead actor in) had a more dynamic world to play in. Hard pass on this one.

Condolences in advance to the team about to be laid off. Sorry your mgmt/investors are lame and made you release a game that needed at least another year in the oven.

Re: Days Gone Dev Reportedly Hit with Layoffs, Loses 30% of Staff

wildcat_kickz

Huge bummer. I hope everyone laid off lands on their feet, but unless they worked remote, not a lot of employment opportunities for dev work in Oregon.

While I wasn't impressed by the story or characters of Days Gone, it's a really fun game to play. Truly hope they get the opportunity to show us what they're capable of.

Re: New PS Plus Premium Retro Games Have a Couple of Platinums to Collect

wildcat_kickz

@Jammer Nope, if anything it's harder. In Riven, in order to accommodate the real-time structure, some of the map layout has been tweaked and the answers to puzzles are randomized in both Myst and Riven.

Playing Myst as an adult isn't as hard as you might remember, but Riven is still pretty obtuse at times. You'll definitely need to keep notes.

Re: New PS Plus Premium Retro Games Have a Couple of Platinums to Collect

wildcat_kickz

I don't have Premium, but seriously, everyone who does really shouldn't sleep on these games, especially Riven. Puzzles aside, the world and lore of this series is top notch.

In Riven, be aware of the D'ni number system though. Just look it up if you need help. No shame at all.

Edit: If you don't want to mess with the retro versions, both were remade by the original developer, Cyan, in the last few years. Fully real-time and gorgeous. Don't think they're on PlayStation, but are on Steam/Mac store.

Re: Splitgate 2 Officially Launches 6th June, with a 'Massive Surprise' at Summer Game Fest

wildcat_kickz

I've been hopping in over the last few days and I actually really like it! It controls much tighter than the first game and the maps, while few, are pretty well designed. The class abilities are pretty fun as well, adding a little extra to defending positions. The 24 player 3-team modes are great, too - nice big maps.

All in all, until we finally get Halo on PlayStation, this is an Arena Shooter worthy of a look.

My only big complaint is the art design, which I imagine is just targeting younger players. It feels very Beyblades.

Re: EA's Black Panther Game Cancelled, Studio Shut Down

wildcat_kickz

@Art_Vandelay Who's merit, though? For all we know, the rank and file devs were exceeding expectations and the game was cancelled because EA thought it would only net $50 million in profit instead of $100 million. Let's also not pretend that EA is in dire straits.

I believe in an honest meritocracy, but if we're gonna sit here and debate hypotheticals, I don't really see why you need to be so callous, as if EA is really the unsung hero of this story.

Re: EA's Black Panther Game Cancelled, Studio Shut Down

wildcat_kickz

@Art_Vandelay I think you're being pretty glib to score a point, but I broadly agree with what @Ajbr8687 is saying, in so far as it's always complicated. I'm not a fool and completely understand that making video games is a business. Not only that, personnel is by far the most expensive part of making video games (and is usually the most expensive part of every industry). I'm just really tired of hearing that a game gets cancelled and instead of giving the team something else to try, they just fold the whole department then and there. The fact that dev teams are operating on a knife's edge so often is absolutely insane to me. Can you image how much bedlam would happen if every industry handled failure this way?

Re: Atomic Heart Success Turns Game's Developer into Publisher

wildcat_kickz

@nessisonett Couldn't it also be plausible that they don't take direct government funding, but still fear retaliation from the government for any anti-war/anti-Putin sentiment they'd say? As I mentioned in a previous comment, even if the team doesn't operate in Russia anymore, it's very likely that they all still have family in Russia and can't risk saying anything that would put their loved ones in danger.

Re: Atomic Heart Success Turns Game's Developer into Publisher

wildcat_kickz

@ChrisDeku I totally understand that, so I wouldn't cast stones on anyone who has a moral issue with buying products with ties - indirect or otherwise - to nefarious entities. In a global market, it's impossible to completely separate your money from bad actors, but it's up to each of us to draw those lines for ourselves.
