Path of Exile 2 is gearing up for one of its biggest weekends yet.
The action RPG, which is currently in paid early access on PS5, just announced The Third Edict — a surprisingly massive update that's dropping on the 29th August. It's basically an expansion, but it's free for everyone who owns the game.
However, if you're yet to be sold on Path of Exile 2 — or you're just waiting for the title's eventual free-to-play launch — then you may be delighted to know that the game is having a free weekend to coincide with The Third Edict's release.

So again, from the 29th August to the 1st September, you'll be able to dive into everything that Path of Exile 2 has to offer. Granted, you might not be able to get far in just three days or so, but you'll get to see what all of the fuss is about.
Developer Grinding Gear Games goes into more detail with regards to the free weekend: "There are no limits to character leveling, and all progress made during this period will be saved to your account. When the Free Weekend ends, you can continue playing by purchasing an Early Access key or by waiting until Path of Exile 2 becomes free to play at full release."
Not a bad deal, and game director Jonathan Rogers points out that the team's "beefed up" the title's servers in anticipation of the weekend. We'll have to wait and see how well they hold up...
Oh, and participating in the free weekend nets you a trio of unique cosmetics. Get to the end of Act One and you'll unlock all three items, including a hood, staff, and cloak.
Path of Exile 2 went through a bit of a rough patch a few months ago, when many players expressed disappointment in the game's first big update. But since then, the studio really seems to have won back the faith of its fans with positive and consistent support for the release.
We haven't seen Path of Exile 2 hype like this since the title's initial early access launch near the end of 2024.
So, will you be giving Path of Exile 2 a shot this weekend? Never stop grinding in the comments section below.

Picked this up with the last of my PS Stars points. I need to start playing it at some point.
I played this a bunch when they first released in early access, but at this point, I'm waiting for 1.0.
I really wanted to try this out, but I refuse to pay for an unfinished game. Our definitions of “unfinished” may be different, but at least this game advertises openly it is still in development and that makes it unfinished to me.
Offering a free to play weekend is a fantastic surprise to “try before you buy”.
Looking forward to it.
I was waiting for the full release but I might play a bit and complete the first act
Hmmm in light of PoE 1 servers are constantly falling with unexpected error (maybe 50x in 2 hours) I don't expect PoE 2 will go any better.
Might give it a shot, but will definitely be picking up when it fully launches.
I’m gonna wait for the full release but I’m keen to support a small kiwi games crew
PoE2 is the only time I've ever bought into the early access model. I've not played it for a while because as everybody knows I became a bit of a sim racing aficionado but I love the game and I think it's better than diablo 4. If you love your diablo style games then you need to try this free weekend offer out as it really is a great game. There's been a lot of negatives surrounding PoE2 but apart from some early server issues I've had a great time with it. I can't wait for the full release.
The poll is missing an answer "I'll play it when it's finished". Is there a confirmed date yet?
wasnt this meant to be free to play anyway?
Beat the first act before sunday evening and you'll get a bunch of free cosmetics ingame (demo or Early Access).
I you "only" play this free demo those cosmetics will be waiting for you if you buy EA at later date, or even if you wait until it's 100% free to play i the future (date unknown at the moment).
@Toot1st It will be after Early Access ends.
@The_Elder No.
