Re: EA's Black Panther Game Cancelled, Studio Shut Down

wildcat_kickz

@Ajbr8687 I understand what you're saying in principle, but there are plenty of examples of games being cancelled and the team not being folded, so it's certainly not an inevitability. EA had already spent money on infrastructure, equipment, training, etc. It may not be the short-term fiscally responsible move to let them take another crack at it, but it's a more human response and may have led to a better game after chemistry and human bonds were created within the team over the last few years.

What EA did was predictable, but it doesn't make it any less sad.

Re: Atomic Heart Success Turns Game's Developer into Publisher

wildcat_kickz

@ChrisDeku I don't think buying Atomic Heart benefits Putin any more than buying The Last of Us benefits Trump or buying Black Myth benefits Xi.

There was an effort to tie Mundfish to the Russian side of the war because they didn't publicly condemn the invasion, though I personally find that understandable for Russians to do. Even if they don't live in Russia, they undoubtedly have family that does and you don't want to get on Putin's bad side. The first victims of Putin's regime were Russians.

If the proximity gives you a moral quandary in buying Mundfish's titles, I would find that perfectly understandable, though.

Re: Borderlands 4 Boss Writes Grovelling Apology for Implying 'Real Fans' Will Pay $80 for PS5 Game

wildcat_kickz

@Rich33 Oh, I'm totally guilty of it - here and elsewhere. We've all been there, which is why I try not to assume the worst of every ill-conceived utterance.

I completely agree on your other point, too. Prices are inevitably going up; inflation has totally wiped away any gains that companies had with the last $10 increase. To me, video games are still the best bang for your buck in entertainment.

That said, the industry trend of releasing incomplete products is totally unacceptable and those companies should absolutely be held to a higher standard. I'm reminded of how Ubisoft "discovered" that releasing AC: Shadows in a complete state was a better market strategy than SW: Outlaws' buggy launch.

I guess I'm going to take the unpopular opinion here and defend Randy a bit - not for the original gaff, but I read this entire post and it seems pretty sincere to me. His original comment was made in a moment of frustration and this newer post seems pretty even keeled in how he's trying to clarify his position.

As someone who doesn't post on Twitter, I can very easily see how constant toxic comments can wear away at you until you say something you shouldn't. Twitter is basically having a stenographer for your entire life. Yes, it's a voluntary buy-in (which is why I don't use it), but people are wayyy too gung-ho about pointing to a mistake and making you own it for the rest of your life.

People need to show a little more grace to others.

Re: Poll: 10 Years Later, What Are Your Thoughts on The Witcher 3?

wildcat_kickz

@doctommaso Totally understand the opinion. For me, the lack of tightness isn't a hindrance. Again, it's kind of tied to the role play. Geralt needs to wind up for his attacks to generate force, so it won't be as immediate as other games. In a weird way, it's sort of like KC:D. I just love how you circle around enemies and pick them off one by one. Reading the enemy and prepping for fights can really make a difference and make each encounter so much more rewarding.

Re: Poll: 10 Years Later, What Are Your Thoughts on The Witcher 3?

wildcat_kickz

For the people saying the combat sucks, I would really encourage you to slow down and be more deliberate. You shouldn't just spam light and strong attack. The game demands a little roll play. Don't let yourself get surrounded, learn when to dodge and when to roll, when to cast a trap sign or parry, and understand that you have to commit to attacks. Yes, the animations have a lot of flourish and take time, but that's kinda the point. Geralt is supposed to look like he's almost dancing when he fights.

Maybe I'm weird, but when I'm really in the "roleplay" mood, there's really nothing like Witcher 3 and combat really shines when you commit to the bit.

Re: Beloved Ex-PlayStation Boss Believes $70, $80 Games Are a Steal

wildcat_kickz

I don't know if I like the premise of this entire argument. I mean, we now exist in the era of really variable pricing from game to game. Some games cost $10, some $50, some $80. This harkens back to the 80s and 90s, when cartridge games could get up to $100 (over $200 today).

Each game must be valued independently. If you think the bang is worth the buck, then it's appropriately priced.

Free to Play games should not be factored into this argument. F2P games make all their money on MTXs. They're not "free." Their marketing just makes you think they are. Before you know it, you've spent $100 on a F2P game...

Re: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Bombed So Hard, Warner Bros' Games Revenue Still Hasn't Recovered

wildcat_kickz

I personally never understood the appeal of Suicide Squad.

The IP itself just doesn't have that je ne sais quoi. On top of that, set the game in Metropolis, which has no character beyond being, ya know, a metropolis and switching out stealth/action gameplay for a bland 3rd person shooter and you have a disaster in the making.

Just another example of talented developers being led by incompetent management that doesn't understand the market they're in.

Re: Intergalactic PS5 Star 'Bootcamp-ing' with Neil Druckmann to Ignore the Haters

wildcat_kickz

@djlard I'd like to politely push back a couple things here. I don't think there's controversy marketing. I think there's controversy and news sites, like this one, are reporting on it. It's not like there are ad campaigns out pushing a controversial narrative.

I can also respect that you want to see a reflection of yourself in the main character, but if there isn't, it doesn't mean that the protagonists are badly designed. I actually think Jordan looks pretty badass! As a white guy, I certainly don't see myself in her, at least on the surface, but I definitely am interested in seeing where her story goes.

Re: Xbox Is Stepping Up Its Backwards Compatibility Efforts Again, to the Envy of PS5 Fans

wildcat_kickz

This is such a no-brainer that it's incredibly frustrating we've heard nothing about PS3 backwards compatibility.

If the process is on a game-by-game basis, why not just roll them out slowly? We don't need a giant dump of PS3 games, but even just having an official comment that they're working on it would be reassuring.

At this rate, we'll see Xbox 360 games compatible with PS5 before we see PS3 games...

Re: Poll: Are You Hyped for GTA 6 After Trailer 2?

wildcat_kickz

I'm sure the game is going to be amazing, but, as an American, an open world set in modern day America is not super appealing to me. Red Dead 2 is in my top 3 games of all time, so I have every faith in the world that Rockstar will deliver, but I just can't get really hyped. I have no doubt I'll play GTA VI eventually, but not 100% sure it will be at launch.

Re: Days Gone Remastered PS5 Amplifies the Horror Compared to Its PS4 Predecessor

wildcat_kickz

@MrPeanutbutterz @dschons I hoped my comment was pretty clear that this was just my opinion, but I will push back a little on the notion that screen size has no bearing. If I understand screen resolutions correctly, a 29" 4K screen has smaller pixels than a 65" 4K screen, so a resolution difference should be a little more obvious with a larger panel. Though how far you're sitting away from the screen has a direct impact. But, if you have a 65" panel and you're using it as a computer monitor, I might suggest therapy.

I think the point I was trying to make is that 1440p is perfectly acceptable in just about every use case and an overhauled lighting system would have a much larger impact on your gaming experience than a slight resolution bump. Reasonable minds can differ, but I was just trying to push back on the notion that moving to 1440p over 4K checkerboard was some kind of calamitous event.

Digital Foundry's videos are really fun to watch on an academic level, but I kind of think they have negatively impacted the discourse around game states. It's caused a lot of gamers to be unreasonably nitpicky with regard to hick-ups in games. When Digital Foundry needs to do a 3x zoom to show what they're talking about, I don't think what they're describing is all that important.

Re: Days Gone Remastered PS5 Amplifies the Horror Compared to Its PS4 Predecessor

wildcat_kickz

The difference between 1440p and 4K is pretty negligible, in my opinion. That difference is even sillier when comparing 1800p to 4K. I'd much rather have improved lighting over higher resolution. And to be clear, I have a 65" 4K OLED, so if I can't really tell the difference, then people with smaller screens really don't have anything to worry about.

If this was the only compromise they had to make, then they made the right call.

Re: Xbox Now Selling PS5 Games for $80, Joins Switch 2 in Price Increase

wildcat_kickz

@naruball Sure, in theory there are limits to how much a monopolist company could push the bounds, but what I'm saying is they would have more latitude to push further because there isn't a point of comparison or competition. This is why monopolies are so bad. If you normalize that games cost $150 dollars and there isn't another company to provide a cheaper alternative, people who can afford it, by and large, would eventually relent and people who would previously consider it too expensive, over time, might be too frustrated on missing out and would just save more to participate.

The argument you're making is predicated on a pre-established notion of worth, but if only one company sets the rules, that perspective slowly shifts.

There's never going to be a unilateral video games industry, so this is all hypothetical.

Think of it this way: if you live in a town with only one restaurant and it's Valentine's Day, that restaurant could charge way more than they otherwise would have, if people had other options. Sure, plenty of people would just say "screw it" and find something else to do, but I bet you that that restaurant would be packed each and every Valentine's Day, regardless of how much they charge.

Re: Xbox Now Selling PS5 Games for $80, Joins Switch 2 in Price Increase

wildcat_kickz

@rjejr I was trying to imply that the principle of antitrust laws are there. I'm not saying they're being used effectively.

Without getting too political (a stupid preface, I realize), I don't think we live in a "post capitalistic" society, just a wildly corrupt one, at least at the moment. There's still time to fix it (just not realistically in the next few years). To me, a well regulated capitalist market is still the best option we have. We just need much better people at the wheel.

Re: Xbox Now Selling PS5 Games for $80, Joins Switch 2 in Price Increase

wildcat_kickz

@lazarus11 I'm speaking purely from an American standpoint. I know they've raised prices elsewhere very recently. I might be wrong, but I think they raised the price slightly when the Slim versions came out, but I think another round is inevitable in the US at this point, including the Pro. I wouldn't be surprised if a Pro costs $800 by the end of the year.

@Kidfunkadelic83 Yeah, I'd like to think that people would boycott practices like that, but when you have literally no options, strong wills kinda go out the window. It's why consumer protection and antitrust laws exist, as flawed as the implementation of those laws may be.
