Sandfall Interactive has revealed plans to turn Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 into a franchise, following the success of the first game.
In a new interview with MrMattyPlays on YouTube (via TheGamer), creative director Guillaume Broche said Clair Obscur will be the franchise name, while Expedition 33 is just the first story it has to tell in the series.
"Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise," Broche said in full.
Having sold over 3.3 million copies in its first 33 days on the market, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has become a breakout hit and is touted as one of the frontrunners for Game of the Year 2025. Since that sales update, purchasing trends have actually increased to an "unusual" degree, according to Newzoo. While it's probably not going to be a direct sequel, those who have bought and loved the RPG will surely be happy to know there's more to come from Sandfall Interactive.

There’s a right way to do this and a wrong way. I sincerely hope they do it the right way.
With the way the lore is setup they could really kind of go all sorts of different routes with it. Regardless the moment we see their Sandfall logo pop up in a game showcase...talk about a mic drop moment.
It'll be interesting to see how this develops. More of the world, characters and gameplay is welcome. However, they won't be able to use the twist again which gave the world and the story so much intrigue.
Excited to see what they can do though. I absolutely loved the game.
I have very mixed feelings about this, despite my newfound appreciation for Sandfall. As much as I love Expedition 33, I think it was one of those "right people doing the right thing at the right time" projects, and they will forever live in the shadow of it. I don't want them to franchise Clair Obscur if we're going to get multiple attempts at recapturing the inspiration and passion behind E33 instead of going for something completely different each time. The worst-case scenario is another game set in E33's world and lore, because it runs the risk of diluting what made it special.
@MidnightDragonDX Well that's a statement wide open for interpretation haha.

My thoughts exactly — one of the things I enjoyed most about CU:E33 was that it was an original, standalone experience — when you start ladling extra narrative and lore onto something you run the risk of crushing it under its own weight. I really hope they don't oversaturate it, and it becomes something like Assassins Creed where they churn a new one out every year.
@wildcat_kickz The right way is the best way.
Clair Obscur: Black Ops 7
If this is implying sequels instead of prequels, does that mean we’ll never get to see Expeditions 1-32?
@Andee This is the way.
I think they will explore the war/battle against the Writers that Clea mentions she is fighting while the rest of the family is off grieving in the painting. Would be connected but give them the foundation to try entirely different things with whatever power a Writer holds.
I don't mean it has to take place at the same time the rest of the family is in the painting though. I may be wrong, but I inferred that Verso was killed by a fire that the Writers started, so a lot of overlap can be had with the Dessendre family. Just my thoughts and hopes.
They need to game about "The writers" that's all I'm going to say, if you know you know.
I hope that future games aren’t set in the same “world” per say as it’s story has been told and I don’t feel like there’s any point in retreading the same ground with the other past expeditions. I also would prefer if it was set in the same universe with various connections to E33, like what Nier Replicant is to Automata or what the Persona games do, rather than a direct sequel that requires new players to catch up. But whatever they do I trust that they will make another masterpiece.
Pretty obvious after the success of expedition 33 there would be more in the franchise hopefully a souls like expedition game!
Obvious after the announcement of a movie so soon after release lol. I wish they had fleshed out the story of this 1st game way better. But I'll take sequels expanding the overarching world and lore I guess
I’m not 100% sure what to think of this, but am patient to give the devs time to cook something new up. E33 was lightning in a freaking bottle. It will be hard to follow it up, but maybe they pull it off again. Would prob take a fair amount of time either way. A game as amazing as E33 (in all regards) doesn’t just plop itself out.
Good, all they need to do is keep the combat the same, that's all they need to do to win HUGE
I want to know about the writers and it's clear there were other paintings in that room that have new worlds to explore. Plus that war between writers and painters
LET. THEM. COOOOOOOK.
Good news, but where's my Esquie plush?
Cool. Looking forward to Expedition 34!
I imagine with this being a game focused on the painters, what would make a lot of sense is a game focused on writers. The cat's out of the bag on the major twist, so the story would have a different feel to it, but I trust this studio.
I think they should take a bit more inspiration from Final Fantasy and make each a one a unique story and characters with elements that carry over.
Just give us the Expedition 60 game we all want. SMASH!
Considering that they basically didn’t cover the main reason that the game occurs, I’d certainly hope there’s another game. I mean, there’s basically no information or interaction on the game’s true antagonists.
Will be interesting if they follow the characters of E33 giving how it ends in both endings.
Painters vs Writers please! Maybe even get to play as some characters from each side!
@JuiceboxMeister this is exactly what I want!
They'd do well to look at how From Software and even Square approached the souls and final fantasy progression.
Keep the core mechanics with some gradual development whilst introducing new stories and characters. If they keep going back to the same world and lore it'll become stale before the sequel even comes out.
But why? Why does everything need to be a complete franchise these days. This game has a perfect wrapped up story, sure they can continue the story or make prequels, but why not create a new story with new characters in a new world.
There is a reason why Final fantasy, for example, was a succes in the past. Every game was different and new.
@B0udoir Hell no, no prequels it's not like either ending of the first game didn't leave a Hell of a scope for a direct follow up. The shadowy group mentioned near the ending that popped up out of nowhere with little explanation for one needs covering.
The first is a masterpiece.i hope they can keep the quality in gameplay storytelling and atmosphere
@Korgon
I do want to know more about the writers/painters war.
Gives me some Unwritten vibes ^^
I want to see a game, or at least a DLC, about Chadpedition 60.
I don't know why you say "it probably won't be a direct sequel." Why wouldn't it be? Did you finish the game? There is a HUGE part of the universe they didn't explore at all, and an entire "faction" we didn't even get a glimpse at (who were responsible for one of the central events in the story).
I wouldn't be surprised if the story picked up just a few months after the end of the last game. That would be my preferred direction, but I'm sure they will give us something cool whatever they decide.
