@darkswabber It’s a bit of a strange one to be fair, the game came out in 2001 for the PS1 and never came to Europe. I only played it because of emulation and then the 3DS version. It’s never been in the conversation, even after 8 did so well, but perhaps it got a much better reception in Japan given how huge Dragon Quest is there.
It does feel like an odd duck at times. Another game where there’s arguments for both versions but the 3DS version is generally more playable, just too easy and can feel like going through the motions compared to the PS1 version’s challenge. You also have to weigh up the original’s sense of discovery and adventure game influences against the 3DS version’s QoL changes. I’d be up for them having two difficulty modes if they remade it again.
@Jrs1 Even playing with the 60 minute timer in the 4 levels, it’s still bad. The goals are far too easy to do in the time, but then you can’t quickly restart things like combos and harder lines like you could in the original’s goal structure. I really miss the set custom restart setting from OG 4, especially in London with me dropping off the rooftops and having to find my way back up again.
I’m disappointed. I had a blast with THPS3’s campaign, brilliant remake. But 4 is just not working. The goals do not suit the levels at all. Zoo and Kona are shadows of their former selves. Just put a competition in Alcatraz’s competition area! Movie Studio’s not great but I did think Water Park was a good new level. Pinball is terrible, THPS5 levels of bad. Plus Chicago and Carnival aren’t even in the game. I hold out hope that once I reach the Pro Goals then things will improve but this has been a kinda phoned in project, I’m not that impressed by Iron Galaxy. The physics are really dodgy too, you bounce off stupid objects, spine transfer directly into the ground etc. Even just the graphics are mixed, they’re just a tad blurry even in quality mode, and the time of day in San Francisco and Alcatraz actively make them look worse. The fact I’d still agree it’s an 8/10 speaks to the quality of the original games over this remake.
Premium being as crap as it is just looks even worse considering how much RetroAchievements has gone from strength to strength. I’m just going to play PS1 and PS2 games on the PC if it means I can upscale them, use CRT filters and earn achievements.
I’m ok with it being really difficult if there’s checkpoints! The original games do balance it well other than the final boss of 1 sending you allllll the way back.
I’m convinced my PlayStation is prophetic, I got drafted by the Nuggets in 2K17 just before they got good and I got drafted by the Thunder in 2K22 just before they got good. Unfortunately this does not extend to Football Manager, I doubt Celtic are winning 3 Champions Leagues in a row.
Planet Zoo and Tropico 6 are big wins! Risk of Rain 2 is also one of the best roguelikes of all time, the base game anyway. A good month, even if I already own Cyberpunk.
Did they not just open one with the guy from CoD Zombies? I feel like that’s been the story of the last few years, new studios toiling away on games that either get them shut down or never release, while Insomniac pump out banger after banger.
@Brockybrock We really need more games set in the UK in general. Forza Horizon 4 is great but you can only really explore the roads. The Getaway’s virtual London tourism shouldn’t still be the best recreation of a realistic UK city!
@get2sammyb I still just find it very cool that my local station is in the game, due to being on the main Glasgow-Edinburgh line. Just in terms of there being lines across the entire world, it’s mad to see somewhere you’ve been to a million times be meticulously recreated in a game.
I thought Tsushima was decent, if not that vastly removed from an Assassins Creed or something. This to me feels like a very iterative sequel, not that it’s a bad thing as such, just that I don’t really see how much a State of Play will convince anyone one way or another. It’ll probably be ‘bigger and better’, the staple improvements to a game like this.
@SeaDaVie Yep, the LoTR movies made the change that suits that medium, it would have been a bit odd if they were split into distinct parts like The Last Duel or something. But then GoT has characters who narrate sections of the books who barely appeared in the TV show
It’s far too fast to keep up with. I love these games but even if you get the content across every game, the sheer effort to redownload your routes and such to be compatible with each new game is a bore.
One of the best games of all time. God we need more modern imsims, the PS3 generation watered them down to the point that the genre is unrecognisable. But Deathloop was good!!! Everyone play that!!!
@RoomWithaMoose As I’ve said above THPS4 is the 56th best reviewed game of all time. It has always been a very well regarded game and the free roam suits the levels as that’s what they were designed for.
I mean, they’re remaking games that currently sit at #8 and #56 of all time on Metacritic. This being in any way not a slam dunk is an issue of their own creation with the butchering of THPS4. Those originals absolutely hold up but this should effectively make me never want to play the original games, as that’s what a good remake does. I’m very much looking forward to Friday because I will hoover up any THPS game but this still represents reviews that are on average a whole lot worse than the originals.
@Medic_alert I love PES 2021 modded, I’ve been using Fanurex’s overhaul recently and it’s amazing having current squads with the real faces. Celtic Park even has the real goal song, warmup song, chants and everything! The 96/97 season mod is brilliant too, had a Liverpool Master League file with Graham Potter, young Puyol and others in my team.
I liked the imsim elements but the game is probably the worst made game I’ve ever played. It was completely let down by it being a technical disasterclass. There’s a whole bit with snipers in a minefield that I had running at genuinely single digit figures on the PS5, I have a clip saved and it’s shocking. AA games are great but they need to be able to run.
I still haven’t gotten level 100 despite sinking so so many hours into 1+2. I do think the Get There’s should be a trophy though, they’re some of the best designed content in the game and a great challenge.
That’s truly awful, Gran Turismo has already completely abandoned its brand and with no real competition from Forza, they have no incentive to improve. Competition is good for everyone!
It’s just horrible, him and his brother both gone. I get why FIFA and PES remove players after they pass but with him being such a huge fan of FIFA and a hell of a good player, it would be nice for them to commemorate his legacy rather than removing him entirely.
One of those things that I meant to check out at some point just out of morbid curiosity but now never will. Never did get to play Avengers either and I was hyped for years before release.
The difference between this and Cyberpunk is that Cyberpunk had potential and had loads of hype attached to it where people wanted it to be good. Mindseye was doomed from the beginning.
Really good to see how successful Rematch is. None of the F2P aggressive monetisation, just a fun game to play with friends that you buy once and own. That model really isn’t dead then.
Would be fairly funny if season 3 of the show just completely changed things like the way Game of Thrones went. Joel alive and a country music star, with a talking dog.
I love B&B but this is bizarre. Just another cog in the ‘let’s destroy attention spans’ machine, everything has to be hyper in your face nonsense now. Harmony Korine’s a melt but he seems to have hit the nail on the head with Baby Invasion.
@SuntannedDuck2 I got Ghost Recon Shadow Wars with my 3DS back in (I think) 2012 and it’s super underrated. Probably my second favourite tactical RPG on that console behind Fire Emblem Awakening. I have great memories sinking tons of hours trying to get every single star.
I’m so confused about the outrage with this being first person? The series was completely first person until the last couple, and with Breakpoint being a failure it makes sense to go back to their roots. I swear you lot all moan about games going back to the ‘good old days’ but that’s exactly what they’re doing and now it’s an issue.
