An executive within Sony has admitted the company's expansion into the live service sector with recent PS5, PC titles is "not entirely going smoothly".
During the firm's latest financial earnings call, Sony CFO Lin Tao commented on PlayStation's latest efforts in the sector, saying the cancellation of Concord after release and the delay-hit Marathon have generated "somewhat negative news".
Tao explained PlayStation's "transformation" towards the live service sector is not "entirely going smoothly, but from a longer-term perspective, if you look at the changes over five years, you see that there has definitely been change". She then points to how, in the last five years, Helldivers 2, MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 7, and Destiny 2 have all started to contribute "to sales and profit in a stable manner".
In a separate presentation slide, Sony revealed its live service revenue is "steadily growing", and during Q1 of the 2025 fiscal year, its titles contributed more than 40% of first-party revenue. Despite these revenue advancements, the Sony executives still believe its live service efforts aren't going smoothly.
Tao then continued: "Of course, we recognise that there are still issues – many issues – so we should learn lessons from mistakes and make sure that we introduce live service content, where there's less waste and it's more smooth."
Tao's full comment reads:
"For Q1, the live-service ratio was about 40%. For the full year, it’s a little less — probably between 20 to 30%. In terms of the transformation, it’s not entirely going smoothly, but from a longer-term perspective, if you look at the changes over five years, you see that there has definitely been change. Of course, we recognize that there are still issues – many issues – so we should learn lessons from mistakes and make sure that we introduce live service content, where there’s less waste and it’s more smooth."
Concord and Marathon both appear to be fuelling this perspective, as the former was taken offline permanently shortly after release while the latter has been hit with accusations of plagiarised art. As a result of the issues at Bungie, the developer is being integrated into PS Studios, and Sony will be taking more control. Previously, the studio was allowed a lot more freedom in its day-to-day operations.
