In today's "special announcement" video, Team Cherry confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong will finally release on 4th September 2025. That means the game is now exactly two weeks away, and you can catch a new trailer above. There'll be both PS5 and PS4 versions available.
"As the lethal hunter Hornet, explore an ancient kingdom of insects haunted by silk and song," is the setup for the follow-up." Captured and brought to this unfamiliar land, you must battle foes and solve mysteries as you ascend on a deadly pilgrimage to the kingdom’s peak."

In a development deep dive article with Bloomberg, developer Team Cherry speaks to why it's taken so long for the sequel to come out: "It was never stuck or anything. It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time. There wasn’t any big, controversial moment behind it. We’re very fortunate that we have a development method that is so enjoyable."

September 4. Year 9999.
Ahh comes out the day after I get married. No honeymoon needed.
They actually didn't put the year 2025. Just September 4th.
It could be next year, who knows.
It cant possibly live up to the hype.
Feel bad for the devs.
Happy Aprils Fools everyone
Damn man finally. Cannot wait to see what they’ve been doing all these years.
Wow, wasn’t expecting it so soon.
Can we finally stop talking about this game now?
Not to hate on the game, but I really never understood the hype it gets, just looks like a compotent 2D platformer.
I remember the days when people were being impatient with Elden Ring's release date and thought that this would release first 🤣 Those were some wild times...
@NovemberEmber Congrats man! We just planned our wedding for the 4th of September next year! Probably still playing Silksong by then
@get2sammyb not until the PushSquare, NintendoLife and PureXbox reviews are out!
We also need our obligatory “game was mid” hot take cycle to start in 2 months.
Super excited for the game to finally release. It's been 84 1/2 years.
Edit: The Bloomberg article is a really fun read.
@get2sammyb No because this will probably be nominated for GOTY, indie game of the year and DLC of the year and then be at the Game Awards and Jeff will speak about it again.. so buckle up 🤣
@Haruki_NLI jeez. Bet you’re a right laugh at a party. Well done devs.
That release date is going to stir up a hornet's nest.
@Balie3000 No joke. This is the game that could end the “Clair Obscur is GotY” wave if it delivers. Given the current release schedule, this and Yotei are basically the only games that realistically might disrupt the current mainstream narrative on GotY, and I see Silksong having more success in doing that due to it being indie.
I say that knowing my GotY won’t be either of them and wishing that Mina the Hollower also had that level of hype, but knowing full well these two games aren’t competing with Silksong on the whole of the industry.
@somnambulance I wouldn't be mad if Silksong beat E33 to game of the year tbh.
Every time I replay the first one I remember just how good it is. This doesn’t even have to do that much to be in the conversation of all-timers, literally just be more of the same with gameplay tweaks.
@Oram77 I mean, you could try actually playing it.
It’s one of my favourite games of all time. The artwork and music are sublime, and I loved the sense of exploration in the game. The combat felt really tight to me with some excellent bosses and the platforming also felt great.
Can’t wait to finally play this!
@Haruki_NLI I would normally agree, but this trailer looks fantastic. I have a feeling they will pull it off.
@somnambulance Don't forget about KC II and DS 2; they have pretty darn good shots i'd say!
I'm not part of the hype train for this merely because I just couldn't find that much enjoyment out of the first one. I like Metroidvanias but that one left me puzzled and a little cold. Hopefully this one has easier navigation.
@darylb24 I’d be happy about it. In my opinion, Death Stranding 2 and Donkey Kong Bananza beat it pretty easily for me, but I get that the community at large doesn’t feel that way. Silksong’s a big deal though.
Don’t get me wrong, the first game was a good, but I think it might be one of the most overrated games I’ve ever played. I enjoyed it, but everyone acts like it’s this masterpiece of a Metroidvania, I’d take the Ori games over this any day.
My Prediction:
93 on Metacritic and Push Square comment section will be filled with comments about how overrated it is by the 8 people in the world that didn’t like it.
I have not studied marketing but if they have the release date finalized why they did not announce it in the gamescom show, where more people were watching?
Anyway, looking forward to it,
@Thrillho I played it, nice art style, phenomenal soundtrack, ho-hum gameplay.
I also don't understand the hype for it.
Much sooner than I expected. Rogue PoP, this, Cronos.
I am already playing 2-3 games too. Aaaaah!!!
@Odium
PoP and FIST were better too.
But does the PS5 version support 120fps? They've said that the Switch 2 version will, but that's not a guarantee that the PS5 version will. It certainly should, but I'd love to know for sure.
@get2sammyb No, the talking will really start when we actually get to play the game and discuss all of the gameplay and lore.
The first one was one of my ps4 faves. This will be brilliant
@NovemberEmber Get that pre-order in and you might get it a day early. You could have the PS Portal on the go while you're walking down the aisle
short video trailer kinda of anticlimatic..then the release date sept 04..
@Odium I think Ori games are visually stunning, but they're quite average as metroidvanias. They're quite linear and the combat in the first game was quite boring. Now, they did improve a lot for the sequel... by borrowing ideas from Hollow Knight. 😄
Anyway, there are plenty of great indie metroidvanias out there (Guacamelee, Axiom Verge, Gato Roboto etc) and of course Metroid games themselves are amazing as well. But I think Hollow Knight deserves all the praise it gets.
@get2sammyb Only if we can finally stop talking about Bloodborne.
@KoopaTheGamer agreed with you 100% (I'm talking about your last comment)
Hell is us, cronos AND silksong? Damn september is loaded. LOADED.
I’ve just started a playthrough of Hollow Knight on ps5 (having already done so on switch). Need to wrap that up for September 4th as a day one purchase
@MARl0 30fps on the pro. 15-25fps on base.
@Haruki_NLI If the game is as good or better than Hollow Knight then fans will be satisfied. There's no more hype than that. Plenty achievable. The devs have already proven themselves highly competent at creating tight platforming, challenging and creative boss designs, and rewarding metroidvania exploration. Nobody is expecting anything else.
@kcarnes9051 The movement looks fantastic and tbat to me is the most important fundamental. I just wish I didn't just start Pirate Yakuza and just bought the new Donkey Kong game. Haven't even taken my switch 2 out of the box yet. Those two were supposed to hold me over til Ghost of Yotei.
@Oram77 Claiming to not understand the hype around a game when you haven't played it is head-scratching.
"Not to hate on the game". Proceeds to hate on the game by devaluing it by calling it "just a competent platformer." Again, without having even played it. Lol.
@mvhess The new DK game is a definite romp. Pure fun. Highly recommend!
@JB_Whiting I loved the first one. It’s one of my favorite games I’ve played, second only to Metroid and Castlevania in the genre for me.
Death Stranding 2 is my GotY. There’s nothing that could beat it for me. If Silksong lives up to expectation though, it’s certainly going to be a top 5 title this year for me. I don’t expect DS2 to have a chance for the mainstream award though. The nomination is enough for Kojima, I expect.
With regards to KCD2, I didn’t like the game. I liked CO more, personally, but I’d be more supportive of KCD2 winning, as I do think it’s an objectively better game. KCD2’s GotY wave sort of died when CO released though, it feels like. Reminds me of when Tears of the Kingdom felt like the obvious choice until Baldur’s Gate 3 came out and the internet rallied towards it… though that may also happen to CO when Silksong releases. Not to hate on CO, but Silksong winning would be much cooler to see. After all, CO’s team is full of industry vets from big studios, and Silksong’s team is just three highly talented guys. Would be incredible to see such a small team get such a big award. That’d be a bigger victory for the indie community, I feel.
I avoided the original for ages because I was burned out on Metroidvanias. I gave it a go on Game Pass and fell in love and then bought it.
I'll do the same with Silksong and hopefully it draws me in like the first one did.
Does this mean that Silksong fans will finally stop being the most annoying people on the Internet?
@kcarnes9051 I literally said the game was competent (which means good fyi), have you played Silksong? do you know it will be good?
@KoopaTheGamer I’ll agree that Hollow Knight’s combat beats out Ori’s, but I don’t think it competes in its platforming. I also enjoyed the story, world, and style of Ori more.
There certainly are games that did it better and games that did it far worse than either series. Don’t get me wrong, I think Silksong will be a good, even great, game, I just don’t have the love for the first one others do.
Huh. It's actually coming out. Mazel tov.
@Oram77 No, you said, "JUST competent" after saying you didn't understand the hype. The implication you're very clearly making is not that the game is good but rather that the game is nothing special. It's JUST competent. Again, you haven't played the game. If you'd played the first so as to understand the context and reasons stated by other games as to why they're hyped then you would know. But that doesn't seem to be the case. These are bizarre statements to make from someone who has not played the game. And you are very much hating by devaluing it before even playing it.
I have not played Silksong. And I have not stated and I do not hold an opinion on it because I have not played it. Why you're asking me this is equally bizarre.
I do understand the excitement around the game because I played the first and understand why a large contingent of gamers are excited. It's not hard to understand if you know the reasons why other gamers are excited.
About time.word up son
@Oram77 I got an email with your previous comment but don't see it here, so maybe you deleted, and sorry to beat a dead horse, but to be clear I'm not defending the quality of the game. I'm defending it from an uneducated opinion. You can have an opinion, but that doesn't make it as valid as an educated one, and that does not shield your uneducated opinion from outside criticism when you post to a public platform.
I said I don't hold an opinion on this game. Me defending it against an unfair, uneducated opinion is not contradictory. These are two different things.
To repeat, defending something against an uneducated criticism is not the same as holding an opinion about that thing.
Furthermore, all it takes to understand the hype is to have empathy and to listen to other people as to why they're excited. Just because you're personally not excited for the game does not preclude you from empathetically understanding the reason why others are hyped.
@kcarnes9051 Yes I did delete my comment because I didn't want to argue about a game I don't really care for, don't get it twisted I'm happy for those who are excited for it, I just didn't understand the hype levels, no harm no foul.
@Simu001 and Silent Hill f 😵💫 and Daemon X Machina 🫥
@NovemberEmber you are getting married on my birthday. Good omen 😄

I can understand why people who haven’t played it might not get why Hollow Knight is so beloved by so many, from the outside it seems so simple. It’s perhaps hard to articulate, but I’ll try.
Firstly the gameplay is excellent, tight controls that seem simple and are easy to pick up, but have a depth that means you can keep replaying to achieve mastery. It’s just fun to play. Then there’s the level design which is stunning and wonderful to get lost in, screenshots don’t do it justice. It’s true you can start to feel a little overwhelmed at times (this is where many fall off) until, like Dark Souls, you suddenly loop around and reappear in place you know and this maze like world starts to feel so interconnected. It’s a wonderful feeling piecing it all together and finally finding the next bench to save at.
Then there’s the character building, world building and lore. Hallownest - the place where the first game takes place - has a history, as do all the characters, it’s a little obfuscated and drip fed through small entries here and there… but it all feels so tangible, cohesive and real. I almost feel like I’ve lived there, like it’s an actual place.
I could go on about the music, the art design, the animation, the boss fights, and more but I don’t want this to turn into a sycophantic dissertation. Suffice to say its excels in almost all areas and is also greater the sum of its parts. Why is that? Simple… passion. The passion of the devs shines through - it’s a tiny team which helps it have one cohesive vision - and similar to Expedition 33 you FEEL the devs love of their craft, it oozes out of every pixel and frame.
Of course it’s not a game for everyone, no game is, but it is a game that gives back what you put in. The more you absorb yourself into its world, its characters, its gameplay, the more you get back. There real depth to it, and it keeps on giving. I’ve played it 6+ times and still find new things. In my view it’s an absolute masterpiece. I hope you give it a chance one day, but if not there’s plenty else to play, we all like different things after all. Happy gaming dude.
@darylb24 @somnambulance Expedition 33 is by far my GOTY so far, but as I said at the time I hope it isn’t my GOTY or it has stiff competition, because that would mean I’ve played another game as good, or better, this year which would be a treat. Ultimately we just want great games. Enjoy Silksong.
@get2sammyb You do not know how this works, huh?
sweet completely forgot this was coming to gamepass
@somnambulance Yeah I didn't really enjoy E33 that much compared to other games. The story mode was very poorly balanced at launch too.
@somnambulance Oh wow, THREE people made this? I had no idea; no wonder it took all these years. Mad respect!
@darylb24 I thought Clair Obscur was a good game, but nowhere near as good as the internet has made it sound. In my opinion, I do believe the game received a decent amount of grace for being $50, just as I feel reviews were harsher for Mario Kart World because it was $80.
And I’ll agree. The latter portion of the game especially had balance issues.
@JB_Whiting I’m sure they outsourced some help with it, but yeah Team Cherry’s employee roster is a three person team. It’s really incredible they made Hollow Knight mostly by themselves. Also, Kickstarter backers from Hollow Knight are getting Silksong codes for free since it was promised that the backers would get the Hollow Knight DLC included with their backing… only the DLC turned into a full game. Honestly, I can’t think of a more positive story in the industry than if Silksong has a victory lap.
@Oram77 If I may, why I liked it: extremely precise controls, high-response gameplay, tough but fair bosses that demand focus, gorgeous environments and visuals, an excellent creepy atmospheric soundtrack, excellent platforming, great map design with lots to discover and explore, and overall a very satisfying gameplay loop.. it scores exceptionally high across all categories.
Really looking forward to this, and it's frankly a bit overwhelming to think it's an even bigger game than the first one. I have way over 100 hours in the original and still haven't finished all the end game content.
Obviously the first one isn't for everyone - it's legitimately one of the hardest games I've played, with a much higher difficulty ceiling than any of the Fromsoft games - but it's also an example of what you can achieve with an obsessively fine tuned game. Art design, level design, music, insanely tight controls, insanely tuned combat, interlocking systems, minimal grinding, the incredible sense of discovery as you explore the map, and a fantastic story to boot. And then all the late-game / DLC extras push it so much further (the Colosseum, the Hall of Gods, all the pantheons, dream variants of bosses, the flower quest, Path of Pain, all of it). I eventually hit a wall in the late game content where I just wasn't good enough to beat some of the harder bosses or get through all the platforming challenges, but it's amazing how much they stuffed into this game to cater to the diehard fans. I don't know if it's my single favorite game, but it is easily one of the best and most thoughtfully designed games of all time.
@ear_wig oooohhh god forgot about these two and thensyberia remaster too. They really want to break my wallet it seems.
