Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 366

Paranoimia

Been hooked on DayZ with a couple of mates since Christmas.

It's a terrible game, but it's a brilliant game. We rented our own server a couple of weeks ago, and it's taken on a whole new life now that we can make some progress without getting killed by some random every few hours. We did fear that removing that element may make it less of a challenge, but it hasn't really... we've each died several times, but are having some real fun exploring and learning the different elements the game offers... stuff we never survived long enough to try on public servers.

It's real rough diamond... great fun, but could still be improved in so many ways.

Re: PS Store Discontinues Movie, TV Rentals and Purchases in August

Paranoimia

Well, I guess they won't be taking up my idea of adding a couple of free movie rentals to PS Plus for those who don't want the games!

I think I used this service something like 3 times on PS3 - only rentals which were dirt cheap, I never bought anything... and I'v never used it at all on PS4.

Given a choice, I still don't buy digital for this exact reason - okay, you can still access stuff you've bought after it shuts down, but how long will that go on for? At least with a disc, I don't need to rely on them keeping the service running, or on having an internet connection.

I do have digital movies, but only those which came via UltraViolet and a code included with a disc. When UltraViolet shut down, at least they gave you codes to get your movies on Google Play.

Re: Tom Holland Doesn't Sound Particularly Happy with His Portrayal of Uncharted's Nathan Drake

Paranoimia

I still think this would have been better if they'd gone with the voice actors from the game playing their respective roles. Voices and mannerisms would be spot-on, and with a bit of makeup, they could look the part too.

Of course, Hollyweird being what it is, they were always bound to insist on A-listers, and change beloved characters for "artistic reasons".

I've said this in previous comments, but as a fan of the games, I'd have preferred them to stay more true to the source and make a rollicking good B-movie with the game's "unknown" cast (not being cruel, just speaking in relative terms) and fun approach, rather than go for the big names and what seems to be a more gritty and serious setup.

I'm not saying it won't be an enjoyable movie, but I have a feeling it's going to be quite a wrench for fans of the games.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy with Your PS Plus Games for March 2021?

Paranoimia

Not interested in any of them, personally.

I've been playing online more recently with the lockdown, and with a couple of mates I've been bouncing between BF4, Division 1 & 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Breakpoint, and more recently DayZ.

With that in mind, I might pick up Remnant if the other guys are interested as it's 3-player co-op... otherwise, there's nothing there for me.

Re: Soapbox: The Real Problem with Sony's State of Play Livestreams

Paranoimia

I think there's one very simple, very glaring problem with all the State of Play's at the moment... and that is that they just don't have anything of significant weight to show.

We're in a bit of an odd situation - well, at least I personally feel we are - which is kind of like "the eye of the storm". We had a great 'end' to the PS4 generation (I put end in quotes because it's clearly got a lot of life in it), but that came about because - whether by coincidence or by design - all of the major PlayStation studios finished their projects at around the same time, that being in the last couple of years.

Now we're in a lull, where the new console is largely relying on indies and some very average third party titles to tide us over until the next wave of first-party gems, most of which are probably still at least a year away, if not longer.

I cancelled my PS5 pre-order just prior to release, partly because I was told I wouldn't get one for release day, but also partly because there just wasn't anything for it that I felt I absolutely had to play. Now we're three months on, and that's still the case... there's nothing I feel I need to buy a PS5 for. I didn't bother watching this State of Play (the first one I've intentionally not watched), and reading about it after the event, I don't feel as if I missed anything. That's a feeling I've not had with any previous Sony system.

Sure, I could buy the console (if I could find one) to play my PS4 games on, but for me that's just not worth it, no matter how it may improve them. I don't buy new systems to play old games, and my Pro will play them just fine for now.

I didn't bother getting a Pro until Horizon Zero Dawn was released, and it's currently looking like Horizon 2 will be the catalyst for me buying a PS5... whenever that may be. Unless something else is released sooner which I find equally compelling.

So yes... a kind of 'eye of the storm' situation... we had a blast, now we're just sitting around, patiently waiting for the next one.

Re: Reaction: Japan Studio's Disbandment Is Disappointing, But Not Surprising

Paranoimia

Can't say it really bothers me one way or the other, as apart from Everybody's Golf, I've never bought anything they've put out. Never really been into the often bizarre Japanese-style games.

That said, if a Japanese division can't make games the Japanese gamers seem to want to buy, and hasn't in almost 10 years, they basically made the decision easy for Sony.

Yes, of course I feel for those who may lose their jobs if they're not integrated elsewhere, but from a purely business point of view, it makes perfect sense.

Re: Sony Confirms Next Generation PlayStation VR Is in the Works for PS5

Paranoimia

@GKO900 I'm with you. Last I checked, less than 5% of PS4 owners had bothered with PSVR, and it had sold less then Vita over a comparable period... yet they dumped Vita and persist with this.

I've tried PSVR, and I enjoyed my time with it, but I wouldn't buy one... I don't want to play games for hours with something hanging off my face, and while it's immersive with suitable games, I also feel it's restrictive in the type of gameplay it allows; it's ideal for a handful of genres, and just a gimmick for others.

Re: Days Gone Is Coming to PC

Paranoimia

On the one hand, I'm fine with it, as (a) more people get to play some awesome games, and (b) it means more money to the Sony devs for even more great games.

On the other hand, it makes me a little concerned for the future of PlayStation systems, and I think they need to be careful about the delay between a PlayStation release and PC release.

As someone with a decent PC, I already consider the Xbox to be irrelevant (note: just in my own personal view) because any game released on it is available on PC at the same time, so I personally have no need or interest in buying Xbox hardware. Presumably there are many others who feel the same.

That's not really an issue for me, as while I did own an original Xbox and (eventually) a 360, I've never really been a Microsoft fan; in fact, I have quite a strong dislike of them as a company, going back to before Xbox was even a thing. But I have been a fan of PlayStation (and Sony) since the PS1, and I'm not keen on them removing reasons to buy their own hardware as I feel Microsoft has done.

At the end of the day though, I'll be playing their games anyway, and playing them pretty much exclusively consoles, so... I guess it changes nothing, really! Well, that was a waste of typing, wasn't it? 😄

Re: This Is Why PS5 Controllers Drift

Paranoimia

So, it's one of those things that is fairly natural, and just happens. Wear and tear.

If she were an actual person, I'm sure the legal teams behind these class action lawsuits would sue Mother Nature for the leaves falling from trees every autumn. "I don't care if you'll replace them in time, these trees were clearly not built to last!"

Re: PS5 DualSense Drifting Triggers Class Action Lawsuit

Paranoimia

Sh*tty, scumbag lawyers looking for any chance to make a few bucks.

As with any tech, a certain volume has some issues. Not everything requires a fecking lawsuit. The console's been out 3 months... if you've got an issue, it's still covered by warranty.

Once upon a time, I'd have said "only in America", but we all know this kind of crap has spread almost global now.

Re: Feature: Could PlayStation Do More to Promote Green Packaging?

Paranoimia

I buy physical whenever possible, and if I'm keeping games, I want the cases to last, so I'll always prefer plastic to cardboard, as they get damaged too easily.

"Single use plastic" isn't necessarily automatically a bad thing. Sure, if it's a straw, bottle, cup, maybe so... but if it's a container for something you're keeping for a lifetime, and it's recyclable, that's different.

The biggest part of plastic pollution is people... those who just carelessly discard it by dropping it in the street, where it gets blown around and ends up in streams, rivers, and oceans. If it's properly disposed of and recycled, I don't see it as that much of an issue. But the whole aspect of littering is a personal hatred of mine; to me, an anti-littering message should be drilled into kids from an early age, in much the same way as anti-racism and the like.

Re: Controversially Cancelled Shooter Six Days in Fallujah Returns This Year

Paranoimia

Well, neither Destiny or Halo are selling points for me, but I'm always in favour of an FPS in a current war setting. If it's decent, I'm in.

Sounds like it might have a decent single-player campaign with some decent stories. Or at least it should, given the stated aim of telling it through the eyes of those who were there. Who knows, perhaps there might even be a tactical element to any multi-player, making a welcome change and setting it apart from the usual "run around like a headless chicken" approach of practically every other military FPS.

Re: PS5 Scalpers Reportedly Don't Like All the Bad Press They Get

Paranoimia

They stopped the f*ckers doing it with concert tickets, so do the same with these items too.

I don't mind the odd person buying, say, a couple, keeping one, and selling the other for a modest profit. But buying thousands of items you don't want yourself, for the sole purpose of milking money off those who genuinely want it... that stinks. It creates a shortage which wouldn't necessarily exist otherwise... same as with those who were panic-buying hand sanitiser and bogroll when we had the first COVID lockdown.

It would help if we did away with "RRP" or "SRP" ('recommended' or 'suggested') and fixing it at "RP" - retail price - where the manufacturer states the price, and it's illegal to sell above it.

Re: God of War PS5 Patch Posts Staggering Results in Comparison Test

Paranoimia

Very little difference between PS4 Pro and PS5 judging by that video, other than frame rate of course... though I'm still of the opinion that in games like this, frame rate is irrelevant as long as it's smooth and reliable.

As for the game... I found it merely decent. Still deciding whether I want to go back and bother with the Platinum.

Re: PS5 Console Customisation Has Been Taken to the Next Level

Paranoimia

That was supremely irritating. I just skipped to the end to see the artwork, and... that wasn't really worth it.

Does raise two questions, though...

Where and how did he get all those PS5's? Is one of/does he know the scalpers who have been grabbing all the stock?

They may have been answered in the video, but as I've already said, I skipped almost the entire thing.

Also: "celebrities such as Charli D'Amelio, Addison Rae, and Mr Beast"

Who, who, and who?

Re: PS Now Competitor Google Stadia Ceases Internal Game Development

Paranoimia

OnLive Mk. II

And those people who have bought games on it will lose everything. I'm sure they'll be disappointed... both of them. 😜

This approach is the very worst of gaming solutions. I still believe physical is best, but even if you buy digital on PSN/Live, you still have the game to play. Buying a full-price game on a streaming service with no ability to download and keep? Truly bizarre.

While I do use Netflix and Prime, this is why I also still buy movies I really like on disc rather than through PSN, Prime, or Google Movies... the companies can, in theory, wipe out your access to your entire collection at the press of a button.

Re: Poll: Do You Have a PS5?

Paranoimia

Nope. Had one pre-ordered, but wasn't guaranteed one for launch day and was informed shortly before launch that I wouldn't be getting one. I actually cancelled the pre-order some time between the US and UK launch, as there's nothing on it yet that I want to play.

For me personally, it was a disappointing launch line-up, and whatever improvements it may offer, I'm not going to buy one just to play my PS4 games when my Pro plays them perfectly well. Don't get me wrong, I'd play them on it if I had one and some PS5 games I wanted to play, but I'm not going to get one (even if I could) just to play them.

I'll pick one up at some point. I was thinking maybe around March, but it may be later than that. I've got a PS4 backlog and a PC to keep me occupied until then.
