Update: It's been confirmed that The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal has been cast as Joel in The Last of Us. You can read more about that through here.
Original Story: British actress Bella Ramsey has been cast as Ellie in HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of The Last of Us. The 17-year-old, originally from Nottingham, is perhaps most famous for her role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, although she’s also played Mildred Hubble in fantasy series The Worst Witch.
There were rumours earlier today that True Detective star Mahershala Ali had been recruited to play Joel, but The Hollywood Reporter says this isn’t true. However, according to the website he was being considered at one point, although “a deal never came to fruition”. It’s unclear whether Joel’s role has been cast behind-the-scenes, or if work is still ongoing on that front.
Either way, Ramsey is locked in now, with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin executive producing and writing alongside series creator Neil Druckmann. How do you feel about the casting choice? Ramsey’s already won a BAFTA for her work on The Worst Witch, and is considered a bit of a rising star.

I mean, she's 17 so I'm a bit confused. Other than that I don't know her from anything so hard to say. And honestly I haven't been much of fan of this tv series thing from the beginning so idk, it's whatever.
I dunno I don't think she's the right person for ellie
Giant slayer. Also scene stealer, stole every scene she was in. No complaints from me. Bring it on.
Should have been Don Cheadle. Leftist woke communist choice choosing a teenage girl, I’m going to write an extremely strong worded Twitter post.
She looks young enough to play ellie yet she's old enough to be performing some death moves so, it makes sense
I’m sure she’s lovely but I’m not seeing ‘Ellie’ if I’m being honest.
I’ve only seen her play the role of Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones so maybe that’s the issue?
She doesn't look much like Ellie, but she ruled on GoT, so I won't complain.
You're never going to find a perfect 1:1 lookalike. I think more important is how she plays the role.
@get2sammyb Well considering they looked at Mahershala Ali I don't think the casting director is too bothered at looking for people that look similar to the actual characters to begin with.
She was solid in GoT, always liked her character
@get2sammyb unless they cast and de-age elliott page that is.
I actually really do a likeness there, but that doesn't totally make or break a casting. She's a very talented actor and that is what is most important. Can't wait to see who they pick for Joel.
really wish they'd do something else and just use the world as a template, never mind
She can do a good job. Anyone judging before hand is just hating for the sake of it...
Also I thought the Ali rumours were jokes lol they were like 'if ellie is so different, joel will be a different skin color' kind of joke
I don't really see her as Ellie, my interest kinda deflated a bit.
Wouldn’t it have just been simpler to go back in time, kidnap a younger Ellen Page, and bring her to this time?
Hulk told us that wouldn’t screw up our own timeline so I don’t see the issue.
This is why games should not be turned into movies and TV shows.
Before anyone asks, I do not hate the idea of a game turned into movie or a TV show.
I always thought the girl from juno ellen/elliot page looked like Ellie.
If she was a lot younger, Hailee Steinfeld would have killed it as Ellie. Her performance in the True Grit remake convinced me of that.
I think she's a good choice, though I'm more concerned with who will play Joel, apparently Mahershala Ali was offered the role... great actor, nothing against the guy, but Joel is... well y'know... honestly I don't even want to bring it up and risk offending anyone.
@AFCC I can’t imagine a bunch of white people tracking down and beating a black guy to death would go down very well in the current climate... but Joel deserved it, right? 🤔
Seriously? Dont get me wrong but will a desaster this series. So many actress and this? Sorry my opinion but the last of us serie need uegent a new director and a true fan. Go f... Yours... Director!
@Chris0160 Even disregarding him coming out as trans, Elliot is also way too old for the role now. He probably would've worked back in the mid 2000s around that age when he was playing Kitty Pryde in the Fox X-Men films
@nessisonett
If I can remember, and nothing decent is currently on Netflix, I'll stop everything and clap at my phone in support of you and your hashtag every night at eight.
I'm pretty sure Ellie is supposed to be 14 by the way. That's like Millie Bobby Brown in S2 of Stranger Things for reference.
Considering this actress will probably be closer to 18 by the time filming starts, I think this is an odd choice. That said, it helps that I haven't seen anything she's been in previously, so I don't associate her with any other roles, which is sometimes a good thing.
Hmm shes a great little actress and I suppose that's what important ,no no forget it im sure she will be great ,I thought Henry cavill was a bad choice for geralt so what do I know.....nothing it seems.
@zupertramp Actually they should get Ashley Johnson to do it since she voiced her and is an actress after all.
She was fantastic in Game of Thrones, not who i would imagine as Ellie but acting wise she's great so yeah i'm fine with this.
@Tasuki Ashley Johnson’s 37 years old. That would be an... interesting watch seeing her attempt to look 14.
Apparently Pedro Pascal has been cast as Joel. With this news and Gina Carano finally being off Mando, to quote Ice Cube, today was a good day.
@Tasuki That's not how it works lmao
Ashley is in her late 30s. She's every bit as capable of being believable as a 14 year old girl as Andrew Garfield was as Peter Parker in high school
@TheFrenchiestFry @nessisonett They can do some pretty impressive stuff with CGi nowadays.
@fR_eeBritney Eilie Tracked Down And Beat Nora to death So They Pretty Much Already did It.
So any word if the show will be a 1:1 retelling or the director has some freedom to change some stuff? I hope it doesn't follow the games too closely otherwise it will be a giant waste of time for me at least.
@nessisonett is the Pedro Pascal thing for real? I've only see him play a mean puerto rican, a genie/plankton, and a guy with a helmet on so my opinion of him is not super high but idk maybe they saw something I haven't when he read for the part.
Edit: okay, it's real. Wow, again I didn't have high hopes for the show but this, imo, is super disappointing as I just don't see the appeal with this guy.
@zupertramp he was good in Narcos.
I think he’s been in quite a few tv shows over the years.
I know he starred in an episode of Buffy when he was super young. He gets eaten by vampires.
I always thought he would make a good Drake (Uncharted).
Hmm, after the rumours, i thought Kaitlyn Dever looked perfect for the role, but i guess shes too old for the story that they are telling here.
Good luck to Bella. I cant say i was a massive fan of her character in GoT, but im sure she will do a great job
I can imagine it's hard to find a person who's willing to cut off her own finger for season 2. Good for her getting the role.
@get2sammyb well there was ellen paige
A few years ago, Kaitlyn Dever would have made a great younger Ellie.
Depending on the setting of the series, she might still have been able to portray a slightly older TLOU2 Ellie.
Miley Cyrus or Betty White
@fR_eeBritney despite loving Joel, he kinda did lol
She was excellent in Game of Thrones.
If she will act as great as Ellie in the first game then i dont really care if she looks the exactly the same.
If they bring in Timmy Mallet as a clicker, all is forgiven.
@Deanster101 This is the top casting choice of the decade.
This actor was also recently in His Dark Materials Season 2 and i have seen her in The Worst Witch (my daughter watches it, honest) and haven't been that impressed. Particularly with the need for a good american accent. However, I'll wait to see the finished product before I actually have a strong opinion.
She was great in hilda so we'll have to see how well she plays the role of ellie
She showed in His Dark Materials that she's got it all. Excellent choice.
From all the pool of girls they must have had to choose from I think this is a poor choice. Nothing personal to the actress. Maybe there are better photos that look more Ellie-like...
I'm good w/ the Ellie casting but Pedro Pascal is just going to make me think of that awful character he played in Wonder Woman 84. Though he dos have range, and the scenes will always be so dark people will be like "Can we at least turn the lighting up to Titans" that is probably doesn't matter who plays Joel, focus will all be on Ellie anyway.
Bigger more important question - If Pascal is playing Joel what does that do to future Mandalorian seasons? Though I suppose all of these short 8-10 episode seasons means an actor can do 3 or 4 different shows a year easily. 🤷♂️
A leftfield choice and doesn't immediately scream 'Ellie' but I'll keep an open mind. She looks more like a young Abby than Ellie.
😉
Pedro Pascal is a great choice for Joel though, maybe a Narcos reunion is on the cards and Boyd Holbrook could be cast as Tommy.
Watch all the little boys throw tantrums and flood Naughty Dog with death threats...
@get2sammyb.... I don't think it's the looks people are referring too, it's more of a feel.
She doesn't feel like Elie, in the sense that she has played serious gritty roles where she has been forced to take on a role of an adult hence Robbing her of her childhood Ala the Lady Mommon5 role in GOT of Thrones as she's was Lady at a young age hence she needed to grow up quickly.
Elie is a naive, inquisitive, annoying, bubbly, free spirited, loving, caring young girl who has grown up in a hash world. She adds color and brightness to the grim world.
But Niel is part of casting so he would be better placed to see the actors and see who can fit Ellie's characters, maybe it's just gamers 's bias but from first look she does not have that Elie feel but we shall see as she is a brilliant actor.
