The console is great. The software, on the other hand, has been dire - it's been a long time since I've bought so few games for a system.
I don't want PS6 before 2028. Hopefully that will give Sony time to get a decent selection of good first-party games together, as their output this generation has been sorely lacking - too much time spent on remakes, remasters, and supporting the last generation... the major downside of backwards compatibility.
This generation has been pretty dire as far as Sony's first party output is concerned. Actually, not just Sony... all round. There have been some absolute diamonds, but I've bought far fewer games this gen than on PS4, and I feel that trying to keep the old hardware in the mix is a key part of that.
I get why they did it, but backwards compatibility is a bit of a curse in that regard. I know there's the whole 'diminishing returns' aspect in terms of increased power, but I feel we had much bigger leaps without BC, when devs didn't have to cater for the older hardware.
I'd have been happy with Stray if I hadn't bought it when it was released. Don't care for the other 2.
For my tastes, the games have been mostly dire for over a year now. The last one I remember taking was Payday 2 in the hope of playing with some friends, but that never happened.
I'd been stacking subs for a few years when there have been discounts on offer, and I'm subbed until (I think) around September next year, but for the first time since I joined when PS4 released, I don't know if I'll bother renewing... it's a lot to pay for just online play.
It has been for ages. The only game I can recall grabbing in the last 18 months is Payday 3, and I haven't played that past the intro.
And to think they put the price up! They've got to introduce a basic tier for online play only. My sub runs until September next year, because I bought and stacked a few annual subscriptions when they were cheap-ish, but I'm increasingly unsure if I'll renew. Even on Essential, I'm starting to begrudge paying for it now.
Played MGS on PS1 and loved it. Played MGS2 on PS2 and enjoyed it until you weren't playing as Snake (can't even recall the other guy's name), and don't think I ever finished it. Didn't bother with MGS3. Played MGS3 on PS3 and completed it, but think I got bored. Haven't played any since. They're a bit too weird for me, and don't hold my interest enough to sit through the lengthy cutscenes.
Unpopular opinion: Never rated Bungie and was stunned (not in a good way) when Sony bought them, especially at such a ridiculous price.
The original Halo was the reason I bought the original Xbox, but I got bored and never finished it. I also bought Halo 2, with the same result.
I was in the Alpha and Beta for Destiny, but didn't enjoy it and never bought the game, and perhaps obviously, didn't bother with Destiny 2 either.
Then Sony bought them, much to my surprise. The next step was when they scared Naughty Dog off of making The Last Of Us online. Now, I personally love TLOU games, but didn't enjoy the multiplayer and would never have bought TLOU Online, but I know many people were very much looking forward to it, and to have it cancelled because of the opinions of what - for me - are a fairly average studio, kinda rubbed me the wrong way.
So there you have it. As I said, unpopular opinion... probably.
@ElectricWizard As far as I know (or knew when I last played) there are no mods that affect the traffic's actual driving AI and the decisions it makes. I had one that modified traffic density according to the time of day, but no matter how many or how few vehicles there are, they still do stupid things.
The only way to avoid it was a mod that removed all traffic, but that just makes things ridiculous.
Personally, I wouldn't bother - unless they make some huge improvements to the traffic AI first.
I played these for years on PC, hundreds of hours (645 hours on ETS2, 513 hours on ATS), bought every map pack and DLC (excluding a few paint job packs), and even bought a Tobii Eye Tracker 5 specifically for use while playing these games.
But with every map expansion that brought new road layout features, the lacking traffic AI became more and more exposed. I used to find it an awesome game to relax with, but that changed in more recent years. It gets more infuriating the more you play, and my breaking point came in February 2023 with their Valentine's event. The traffic did so many utterly stupid things during the first 10 of the 14 required deliveries that I just plowed through the last 4, smashing through traffic just to get the event finished.
I haven't played either game since.
They keep faffing around changing things that don't really matter, and editing parts of the map that most people will see maybe 4 times in a year... and every time the traffic AI is mentioned - the one thing that affects every single journey - there's nothing; they completely ignore any points raised, time and time again, no matter how polite and respectful people are.
I don't know if it's because the game engine is so old that it can't be modified with better AI, or if they just don't have anyone capable of coding better AI; if they were to reply and acknowledge either of those things, or offer any sort of reasoning or explanation, I might say "fair enough", but their continued absolute refusal to discuss it in any way, stinks.
They've claimed for years to have the best community of players, and they may be right... but I think the community gives them way too much leeway. There are many who will defend them no matter what, and that definitely seems to have led to them resting on their laurels.
I've been a subscriber since PS4 launched. As a service, it's not something I was ever particularly interested in - I only subscribed to keep cloud backups and online play. I've no interest in moving to the higher tiers because I'm not interested in the retro games or rentals.
Admittedly there have been a few corkers, but I've taken so few of the 'free' games over the years that they add little value to the service. The last few years, the games have been mostly dire, for my tastes.
I'm currently subbed until September next year because I stacked several annual subs received as gifts, and when that expires I don't know what I'll do. It may well depend on whether I can find any good discounts between now and then. What I'd really like is a 'basic' subscription level that gives me online play, save backups, and nothing else for, say, £20 a year. I'm sure Sony won't ever offer such a thing for fear of lots of users dropping to that level, but who knows... maybe it would actually bring more in board.
Won't make much difference to me. I always forgot to do the various 'check-ins' because it wasn't on the console and I rarely use the app, plus I didn't earn much as I rarely buy from the store as physical media is consistently cheaper.
I think over is entire existence, I've earned enough to get £10 of store credit. 🤷🏻♂️
Wasn't one for me, so I didn't even bother watching. Enjoyed the first game, got bored with the second and didn't finish it, didn't bother with the third, and have no interest in the fourth.
Still feeling like this gen has mostly been a waste of time, at least for me, with very few games of interest and the continued dearth of first-party stuff. I wouldn't sell my PS5 now, but had I known a few years ago what I know now, I wouldn't have bothered getting one, and the Pro continues to seem like the ultimate exercise in gaming urine extraction.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... for me, this game was the best experience I had on PS4.
I experienced very few issues on my PS4 Pro, and loved every minute.
Of course, I didn't play every game available, and I played many games that were technically better - but as a complete package and over-all experience, nothing topped this.
The first few hours did have me wondering if I'd made a mistake, with the slow pace and limitations on the bike and weapons, but once things open up... fantastic.
I seem to recall that even PlayStation owners have had to create accounts for other territories in order to get some games or content. I have a few UK friends who created US accounts during the PS3 era for exactly that reason.
Yes, it's a bit silly on Sony's part, but is it really that big of a deal? You only need to do it once.
I've had to create several accounts that I didn't particularly want in order to play some games on both PlayStation and PC, the most recent being PayDay 3, which required me to create an account with Starbreeze before I could even get past the title screen.
Just take 5 minutes and create the account. 🤷🏻♂️
And just for the record, I'm sick of both PlayStation and PC gamers at the moment, despite gaming on both platforms myself. Elements of both sides exude arrogance, snobbery, elitism, and some of the worst fanboy traits; there's barely a week that goes by without one or the other petulantly whining about something that is ultimately insignificant, and sometimes I'm embarrassed to think that I'm associated with either.
I loved it, and would have bought a sequel, no question.
It was short, but thoroughly enjoyable, and it looked - and still looks - stunning. I remember taking my time with it and taking (I think) about 8 to 10 hours to complete it; I think I needed to replay parts for a few missed trophies. I remember fighting through the airship, and a few fairly intense firefights on the ground.
I sold it on eBay after about a week, and got back basically what I'd paid for it, which was nice. Then a few years later, I re-bought it digitally in a PSN sale when it was really cheap, so that I could play it again.
I loved the first game, was disappointed by the second, and didn't bother with the third. So I probably wouldn't have bothered with the fourth either. 🤷🏻♂️
The problem is, this is "our" fault. They keep churning these out, and the platform holders keep allowing it, because it's profitable. It's profitable because people keep buying this crap for easy trophies.
It's quite sad, I think, that people are so addicted to collecting trophies that they will quite literally buy any old crap to bump their numbers.
@Toot1st Yes, I buy all my movies on Blu-ray, and all my music on CD. Though music isn't so much of a problem, as you can easily burn a CD from digital purchases.
For movies and games, though... physical whenever possible, unless something is dirt cheap in a sale. The way things are going with digital generally, with games being delisted and movies and TV shows disappearing from catalogues over rights issues etc., there's no way I'd willingly switch to all digital. Sales discounts aside, physical is also cheaper for new games.
People will regret it if and when digital is the only option, whether it's pricing or random removal of 'purchased' or 'licenced' items. I might be persuaded if the law was changed to offer consumers some protection against this stuff. I mean, you pay for your licence in good faith; if Sony or anyone else then lose rights to something, that's not your fault, and they shouldn't be able to remove it from your library unless they give you a full refund... in my opinion.
Platinums only for me. Though it has to be said, it could really use some thought from developers as to exactly when the trophies are triggered and what is on the screen, especially with regard to the screenshot it saves. Quite often I've had a screenshot of just a black screen with the trophy notification, because it was going into a cut scene or similar, and that pretty much renders it useless.
Of course it's only my personal opinion/tastes, but there's been a dearth of games worth buying for a few years now. I've mostly been replaying older favourites, and some of the backlog of freebies I got with Plus.
My most played game of this year is BF2042, and in recent weeks I've been replaying Breakpoint, The Division 2, and Day Z in co-op with some friends. As well as some solo Deep Rock Galactic... that really is an endlessly replayable game.
Sony has really dropped the ball on PS5 with their first-party output, and the third-party stuff just isn't picking up the slack. As I said, purely in my personal opinion.
I'll always have a PlayStation, but loading times aside, PS5 for me so far has been mostly a waste of money in terms of "I need one to play the latest games".
I'm all for free speech, but it's times like this I really wish we could Thanos-snap social media out of existence.
I remember when I first joined Twitter and it was quite a nice, friendly place to be. These days, and for years now (and well before Elon, it must be said) it's just a cesspit of the permanently outraged. Pronouns, elections/politics, games, movies, music... there's always some bubble - from any and all political sides - that's outraged about something and completely closed off to any contradictory thought. It's really f'kin tiresome now.
I'm a huge ND fan, loving everything since Jak & Daxter, but I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed if I'm honest, just due to the lack of anything meaningful in the trailer.
Yeah, it looks gorgeous, but you expect that from them. Still, it was basically just a cinematic cut scene, which didn't show us any of the gameplay, and I thought they (Sony, and the industry in general) were trying to move away from that? I'm sure I read somewhere that they were looking to announce games closer to release, and with some actual gameplay rather than just cinematics. 🤔🤷🏻♂️
I don't have any real issues with the product placement in general, but it did seem a bit 'in your face' and unnatural. Though I guess with everyone complaining about the cost of making triple-A games, this kind of thing is going to increase from this point on; they no doubt got a healthy contribution for featuring those brands so prominently.
As for the gameplay, I'm hoping it's not just a mêlée/hack-n-slash. I have no problem with that style (I loved Ghost of Tsushima), but the setting would seem to warrant firearms as well. The blog post says that it has the deepest gameplay in ND history, so hopefully there'll be a mix of weapon styles... dare I say combining blasters with the funky lightsabres.
We'll see, I guess. It's Naughty Dog, so of course I'm hopeful, but I suspect they'll 'go dark' now and it'll be another year or two before we see or hear anything more.
Yeah... I still ain't paying £800 for it (I'd need the disc drive). Yes, I'm the so-called "enthusiast" gamer it's supposedly aimed at, yes I can afford it - I just don't see the value. People can try to justify it all they like, I just see it as a major urine extraction. It's the sort of price where, if I wanted an upgrade, I'd rather add £200 and upgrade my gaming PC. And (you'll have to trust me here) coming from me, that's really saying something.
Shame they couldn't get someone to impersonate his voice. In the absence of such a person, I'd have sought the family's permission to build an AI model of his voice and tried that. His voice was so distinctive, it's just not going to seem the same with another voice coming out of that character.
Loved it, and although I somehow managed to miss a few of the DLC packs before they were taken offline, I did manage to get both Platinum trophies, for the base game and the Bikes add-on.
Still won't bother. I loved the game and played it through twice, including the hardest setting. But I just don't have the time or willpower to go through it all again.
Maybe somewhere waaaaayyy down the line if I ever get inspired enough to do it again, but for now... nope.
Biggest joke for me was Ybarra (I think?) saying that it would effectively only cost enthusiasts $350 because of the value they'd get trading in their base PS5, and then seemingly assuming that you'd get somewhere near the original cost on a trade-in.
Currys would give me £170. Music Magpie £270. Nobody will give you anywhere near the original RRP.
I've bought every system since PS1, but I'll be skipping this. I don't feel it's at all necessary anyway, and many of my games are on disc. Plus, PS4 Pro made PS5 feel quite average, loading speed aside.
I'll wait for PS6, but if nothing else, this PS5 Pro has me very concerned about the price of the true next gen hardware.
Perhaps they shouldn't have listened to Bungie and instead gone ahead with TLOU Factions as their first major "live service" title. It's ideally suited, and at least there's a lot of fan interest/demand for it... a ready-made audience of (probably) at least a million.
They also need to realise that not every single player game they make needs to be a AAA cinematic blockbuster. They could get smaller studios to make cheaper alternative games tied to their bigger franchises... for example, what about a Broken Sword style adventure featuring Nathan Drake's daughter Cassie, sold for £20?
They have a captive audience for some of their bigger franchises who will buy almost anything. Use that. Stop trying to force yourself into an already saturated market where you have no experience. If you are going to try that, use an existing franchise that people are already interested in... perhaps Concord would have fared better if, for example, it had been a game set in the Killzone universe.
Never had a problem with 30fps on anything. Would rather have a steady 30 than have it jumping between 40 and 60. Consistency is the main thing for me, especially if any part of the gameplay relies on timing, which is the case in most games.
As I've mentioned in a previous comment elsewhere, I'd even argue that any competitive game should be locked at a frame rate that's easily achievable, to keep things skill-based and prevent one player gaining an advantage over others simply because they can afford better hardware. 🤷🏻♂️
Doesn't bother me. I signed up but never expected to get much out of it as I don't buy games digitally if I can avoid it, so never earn many points anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm level 3 with 2051 points, and I had to look that up to tell you... that's how disinterested I am in the whole thing.
@Cambrius They're not charging you to use your internet connection, they're charging you to use their servers, which incur costs for maintenance and occasional replacement or upgrades.
Nope. I'd struggle to justify it if they were giving it away. It's a fun gimmick for a little while, but it's use in gaming is too niche and too limited. And unless you have aircon, who wants to sit with that on their head in this weather? 🤷🏻♂️
I want to get back into this as I loved the exploration and discovery side, even the space flight.
The downer for me is the insane resource collection required to build the various components needed to move between planets. I haven't played for years now, but as I recall you needed maybe 3 components to fuel the jump engines, and each of those needed several other components, and each of those needed several other components, and so on. I just started to find it too tedious after the first half dozen jumps and gave up.
I think they added a mode that simplified things, but I seem to recall it made other stuff easier as well, which I wasn't keen on... I just wanted the travel to be streamlined.
Still waiting on those Sony first-party games myself.
At this stage I wouldn't be surprised if they're holding them back to push alongside the unnecessary PS5 Pro with "improvements" to get people to buy it.
@sanderson72 Similar here. My Pro had a 1TB internal drive and an 8TB external. That 8TB is now on my PS5 holding all my PS4 titles, along with an internal 2TB nvme drive.
I've found that with a few exceptions, the PS5 games themselves have been largely underwhelming - certainly nothing to make feel that a PS5 Pro is warranted.
Skip it, it's not needed. As I found when moving from the PS4 Pro to the PS5, a Pro model greatly dilutes the impact of the true next generation system. The biggest plus I've had from the PS5 is the drive and loading speed... the rest is just 'meh', and no great leap over the PS4 Pro.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say that in terms of moving from one PlayStation to another, PS5 has been the most disappointed I've been... I was more impressed when I moved from base PS4 to Pro than from PS4 Pro to PS5.
About time they knocked this fad on the head. It's been tried before and failed to gain a foothold, just like 3D.
Given that the original sold worse than Vita during the same timeframe after launch, I was surprised they even bothered with a second.
I tried the original and I did like it, but it's just too niche and I knew I would never use one enough to justify the cost. Most people, I believe, just don't want to sit there for hours with something that size hanging off their head when they're trying to relax and enjoy themselves, no matter how immersive it may be. My trial of the original was at a friend's, and as far as I know it's been back in it's box and gathering dust since about a month after launch.
The biggest issue is that it's only truly suitable for a handful of genres and just doesn't work with the rest unless they are specifically designed for it, and then you alienate 95% of your potential audience, which is no doubt why Team Asobi ignored it for the upcoming AstroBot game.

Yes, I'd definitely have appreciated a sequel.
Re: PlayStation Fans Could've Had Another Resistance Game, But Sony Said No
I loved the first game, was disappointed by the second, and didn't bother with the third. So I probably wouldn't have bothered with the fourth either. 🤷🏻♂️
Re: Report Investigates Why PS5's Store Is Still Drowning in 'Eslop'
The problem is, this is "our" fault. They keep churning these out, and the platform holders keep allowing it, because it's profitable. It's profitable because people keep buying this crap for easy trophies.
It's quite sad, I think, that people are so addicted to collecting trophies that they will quite literally buy any old crap to bump their numbers.
Re: The State of the UK's Physical Games Market Might Explain PS5 Pro's Lack of Disc Drive
Re: Talking Point: PS5 Saves Video Clips When You Earn Trophies - Do You Leave That Feature On?
Platinums only for me. Though it has to be said, it could really use some thought from developers as to exactly when the trophies are triggered and what is on the screen, especially with regard to the screenshot it saves. Quite often I've had a screenshot of just a black screen with the trophy notification, because it was going into a cut scene or similar, and that pretty much renders it useless.
Re: Poll: What Are Your Most Anticipated PS5 Games of 2025?
Ghost of Yotei, and that's about it for me.
Re: Naughty Dog Turns Off Intergalactic PS5 Trailer's Comments As Discourse Turns Nasty
Re: Intergalactic PS5 Is Naughty Dog's Wildest, Most Creative Story Yet
Re: PS5 Pro Has a Remarkable Impact on Unpatched Games
Re: Horizon's Sylens Will Be Recast Following the Passing of Lance Reddick
Shame they couldn't get someone to impersonate his voice. In the absence of such a person, I'd have sought the family's permission to build an AI model of his voice and tried that. His voice was so distinctive, it's just not going to seem the same with another voice coming out of that character.
Re: Classic PS4 Racer DriveClub Is Now a Decade Old
Loved it, and although I somehow managed to miss a few of the DLC packs before they were taken offline, I did manage to get both Platinum trophies, for the base game and the Bikes add-on.
Re: Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 Wins Over PlayStation Fans
Still won't bother. I loved the game and played it through twice, including the hardest setting. But I just don't have the time or willpower to go through it all again.
Maybe somewhere waaaaayyy down the line if I ever get inspired enough to do it again, but for now... nope.
Re: PS5 Pro Reveal Is Already Sony's Most Disliked Console Announcement
Biggest joke for me was Ybarra (I think?) saying that it would effectively only cost enthusiasts $350 because of the value they'd get trading in their base PS5, and then seemingly assuming that you'd get somewhere near the original cost on a trade-in.
Currys would give me £170. Music Magpie £270. Nobody will give you anywhere near the original RRP.
Re: PS5 Pro Can Run PS4 Games Better Via Improved Backwards Compatibility
Meh. Sorry, they can stick this one.
Re: Reaction: PlayStation Needs to Take a Long, Hard Look at Itself
A classic example of "stick to what you know".
Re: People Are Already Freaking Out Over Monster Hunter Wilds' PS5 Frame Rate
Never had a problem with 30fps on anything. Would rather have a steady 30 than have it jumping between 40 and 60. Consistency is the main thing for me, especially if any part of the gameplay relies on timing, which is the case in most games.
As I've mentioned in a previous comment elsewhere, I'd even argue that any competitive game should be locked at a frame rate that's easily achievable, to keep things skill-based and prevent one player gaining an advantage over others simply because they can afford better hardware. 🤷🏻♂️
Re: Sony to Short-Change PS Stars Members with PS Plus Renewals Starting Next Year
Doesn't bother me. I signed up but never expected to get much out of it as I don't buy games digitally if I can avoid it, so never earn many points anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
I'm level 3 with 2051 points, and I had to look that up to tell you... that's how disinterested I am in the whole thing.
Re: Black Myth: Wukong Builds the Hype with Stunning Final Trailer
Visually stunning, but there's a feeling of "meh" about the gameplay that i just can't shake. 🤷🏻♂️
Re: PS Plus Essential Has 3 More PS5, PS4 Games to Download Now
@Cambrius They're not charging you to use your internet connection, they're charging you to use their servers, which incur costs for maintenance and occasional replacement or upgrades.
Re: PS Plus Essential Has 3 More PS5, PS4 Games to Download Now
They really need to introduce a basic level that just gives you the ability for online play. £10 a year for online play and nothing else.
Re: Bungie Accused of Overselling Itself to Sony, Promising Success It Couldn't Deliver
I said that when they bought them, but then I never have enjoyed anything Bungie have made. 🤷🏻♂️
Re: Talking Point: Is It Finally the Right Time to Buy PSVR2?
Nope. I'd struggle to justify it if they were giving it away. It's a fun gimmick for a little while, but it's use in gaming is too niche and too limited. And unless you have aircon, who wants to sit with that on their head in this weather? 🤷🏻♂️
Re: Poll: Is the Astro Bot PS5 Controller the Best DualSense Yet?
No option for "I really don't care about controller colours"? (Or console for that matter.)
Re: No Man's Sky: Worlds Part I Revamps the Universe in Biggest Update of 2024
I want to get back into this as I loved the exploration and discovery side, even the space flight.
Re: PS5 Simply Can't Match the Pace of 2023 in Europe
Still waiting on those Sony first-party games myself.
At this stage I wouldn't be surprised if they're holding them back to push alongside the unnecessary PS5 Pro with "improvements" to get people to buy it.
Re: Doubt Cast Over PS5 Pro Actually Releasing This Year
@sanderson72 Similar here.
Re: Doubt Cast Over PS5 Pro Actually Releasing This Year
Skip it, it's not needed.
Re: PS Stars Is Back Online in Europe, Asia, Australia So Far
No joy for me in the UK... not that I really use it anyway. 🤷🏻♂️
Re: PS Stars 'Returning Soon' in Regional Rollout
@JohntheRaptor Don't they always?
Re: Sony Is Allegedly Pulling PSVR2 Funding, Report Claims
