Very disappointing if true. I've played Playstation games since PS1 generation, but these days I'd rather not have multiple boxes in front of my TV. Was kind of hoping that I could skip PS6 completely, and save both money and space.
Arcade versions are generally the best versions anyway, so not a big deal. I've been playing some Batsugun and Truxton lately, so I may continue my Toaplan streak with one of these.
To be fair, I don't think the new music is bad. But yes, it's unfortunate that they had to remake some of the tracks.
History section in the 30th Anniversary Edition had a video where the new composer (who also composed Origins and Legends) mentioned that they had to replace some tracks. Didn't go into more detail unfortunately, but it's pretty clear that they didn't replace the soundtrack without a good reason. But I hope they can figure it out eventually and patch the old soundtrack back in.
@Ristar24 Hamster's emulator (on Switch 2 at least) seems so much better than what Sony managed. Especially since Sony didn't even allow you to run the games with the original resolution, and their CRT filters are awful and don't even look like CRT. Sony's emulator also had frame pacing issues while Hamster's does not.
Well, it looks better than Steel Frontiers, but I probably won't be trying it out either way. I thought the main Horizon games were just ok, so I'm not really super invested in the universe. I also don't like live service games, so...
I personally feel like it's a waste of an OLED panel to put it in a remote play device. I just don't find the concept appealing due to additional latency, artefacts caused by low bitrate etc. Yes, I've tried it multiple times, and yes, I do notice the latency and downgraded visuals.
That said, I'm glad some people are enjoying theirs. While it's easy to recommend a handheld PC or a Switch 2, those are also more expensive and can't run all the games as well. So I can see the benefits even if I'd never want to get one myself.
@Northern_munkey Embargo date for reviews just means that the review can't be released before a certain date. The reviewers can still play those games before that. But it's true that sometimes review codes are sent quite late.
@Northern_munkey Reviewers usually get the game weeks (or at the very least days) before the release date, so that they can release the review as close to launch as possible.
If it's from a PC version, it's kind of important to know what settings they were using. Like, if they were playing on Steam Deck and had to use the lowest settings possible, then surely that would affect lighting as well. Although even then, I'd much rather play the original.
Good thing I bought a new PC (with decent amount of RAM) earlier this year. Would've been quite expensive these days.
Anyway, it doesn't matter if PS6 will be delayed by a year or two, the prices will increase because of AI no matter what. We'll be getting less hardware with worse software for the same money. Good times, huh?
I have to disagree, at least to some degree. I can understand why people like the idea of exclusives. When you've spent a lot of money getting a console, you want exclusives to justify getting that particular box. However, I personally appreciate having the option to get a game on whatever device I want. I don't expect Sony's games to appear on Xbox or Nintendo, but I sure hope they keep releasing their games on PC.
I used to be a big fan of Professor Layton games and was looking forward to the New World of Steam. But if they use generative AI on it, I will not be buying it. It's a shame, but I have enough backbone to not support the kind of actions that I believe are going to harm the video game industry.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear that some developers like Sandfall take the constructive criticism seriously. Let's hope that they keep their promise and will not use gen-AI in the future.
@1970sGamer @Nnfyrbsnss You know, it's funny. While there definitely are people who feel strongly against AI (myself included), there are also plenty of people who paint those people as the bad guy and call them terms like "rabid anti-AI crusaders" or "anti-AI luddites". I don't want gen-AI used in video games (or other creative industries) but I also want to have a constructive conversation about it. You should try to do the same.
@DartLOD I don't think it justifies crunching in video game industry if there are people who do it in other industries. Instead it shows that the people who work in farming etc are overworked and someone should really work towards stopping that from happening.
To be clear, paid overtime is completely fine. Forcing someone to do it is not.
@StrickenBiged Either way, I'm not sure if I agree with the decision. It doesn't have "Horizon" in the name and the main character looks completely different etc. The robot animals look like... robot animals and I'm not even sure if that's something one should be able to take ownership of.
As for the Palworld situation, while Nintendo claims it's about gameplay patents only, I'm pretty sure that in reality it was caused by the character designs until Nintendo realised they didn't have a strong case there. But that's just conjecture. Either way, I see similarities between these two cases.
I don't want to defend Tencent, but it's kind of baffling since it didn't even look that much like Horizon gameplaywise. Combat was closer to Monster Hunter (funnily enough, so is the combat in Horizon Steel Frontiers that was announced much later) but it also had some crafting elements (not just consumables but structures, it seems). Sure, both are open world games with robot animals/dinosaur, but there have been robot animals and dinosaur in media forever.
It didn't seem like my type of game so I don't really mind, but it sets a dangerous precedent. Smaller studios may not want to make games in certain genres if they have to fear big publishers. It's the exact same situation as with Pokémon and Palworld, really.
It starts of pretty strong but gets kind of boring by the end. I also dislike the inventory system since you constantly run out of space and have to sell/drop your gear.
It's a tricky one. On the other hand, indies should be independent (it's in the name) so they should fund and publish their games themselves. But then that would make all of the Devolver Digital games etc not indies while generally people consider them to be indies.
Anyway, Expedition 33 definitely is not indie, no matter what definition you use.
@Uromastryx I agree about the last point you made, the best way to make them see their mistakes is through lost sales. If they use generative AI, I won't be buying it.
That said, it sure helps that internet has made it quite clear that this is not what a lot of people want. You'd have to be living under a rock to not hear all of the complaints.
@LeeBB_Art No, but instead I'm grown up enough and don't need to put the F word into every sentence that I make. But anyway, the response was fairly aggressive in other ways as well.
Good thing that they clarified it, but the original article certainly painted a different picture. That said, I don't really think it's necessary to use gen-AI even for inspiration for concept art.
I also don't appreciate the aggressive response from Swen, as the concern was completely valid and justified based on the article. Jason Schreier definitely should've worded the article better though.
The article also mentions that they're using generative AI for concept art, to explore ideas (whatever that means) as well as placeholder text etc. Extremely disappointing, I don't want to support them anymore unless they change their stance about it.
Considering that they decided to change the whole design, I think it's fair to say that Microsoft did the right call when dropping the funding for it. If it was on track to become something great, they wouldn't've changed the whole design. But who knows, maybe it was for the best and this will be worth playing now.
@SeaDaVie PCs use as much power as they have been configured to use. But you can limit the power usage if you want to.
Anyway, that's really not the point I was making. I know perfectly well that architecture affects power usage. I'm just saying that I don't think you can realistically expect PS5 power saving mode level of performance with only a quarter of power usage in the next generation without sacrificing other settings. I think something like 50% of power usage is realistic though. And of course, with setting changes it's certainly possible to get PS5 games running on a handheld (as shown by Steam Deck, although with variable results).
@LogicStrikesAgain Yeah, the lower resolution would help (assuming that the games using power saving mode hit reasonable numbers so that there is room to lower it). I don't think a new architecture on its own would get you to a quarter of the current power consumption.
@LogicStrikesAgain Realistically, it would need to run at around 25W for it to be a practical and comfortable handheld to use. Kind of hard to imagine them going from 100W to 25W in one generation.
@Chip-Douglas You can call me ignorant and short sighted but I personally feel like you are the one who is wrong. I think it's important to realise the threat posed by AI in the future. Not only because of crappy AI art that could make artists lose their jobs, that's not the real threat. Instead I'm mostly worried about misinformation and scams. We're already seeing it and it will only get worse.
Now, I don't want to argue about it, so let's just agree to disagree.
@Chip-Douglas On the other hand, AI is unpredictable and makes lots of mistakes. It's already being used in healthcare with mixed results. It may get better as time goes, but as models get more complex, the less anyone actually knows how they work internally. If even professionals of the field don't understand how something works, then it's kind of hard to trust it with your life. Instead of looking for cancer in the data it's being fed, it may be looking for something completely different and no one would know. Besides, as it stands right now, it does make mistakes. How many lifes should be ruined before we reach this utopia that you are talking about?
@Boxmonkey Thankfully I have plenty of time to waste. If there's one fight that I believe is worthwhile, it's against the use of AI in creative industries.

Will it change anything? Maybe not, but at least you did your part instead of just giving up without trying.
@LogicStrikesAgain Thanks, but no thanks. Sure, their own launcher/store would benefit them in terms of revenue, but consumers would suffer.
