Re: Horizon Rip Off Removed from Steam as Sony, Tencent's Fierce Legal Battle Suddenly Concludes

KoopaTheGamer

@StrickenBiged Either way, I'm not sure if I agree with the decision. It doesn't have "Horizon" in the name and the main character looks completely different etc. The robot animals look like... robot animals and I'm not even sure if that's something one should be able to take ownership of.

As for the Palworld situation, while Nintendo claims it's about gameplay patents only, I'm pretty sure that in reality it was caused by the character designs until Nintendo realised they didn't have a strong case there. But that's just conjecture. Either way, I see similarities between these two cases.

Re: Horizon Rip Off Removed from Steam as Sony, Tencent's Fierce Legal Battle Suddenly Concludes

KoopaTheGamer

I don't want to defend Tencent, but it's kind of baffling since it didn't even look that much like Horizon gameplaywise. Combat was closer to Monster Hunter (funnily enough, so is the combat in Horizon Steel Frontiers that was announced much later) but it also had some crafting elements (not just consumables but structures, it seems). Sure, both are open world games with robot animals/dinosaur, but there have been robot animals and dinosaur in media forever.

It didn't seem like my type of game so I don't really mind, but it sets a dangerous precedent. Smaller studios may not want to make games in certain genres if they have to fear big publishers. It's the exact same situation as with Pokémon and Palworld, really.

Re: Divinity Dev's Comments on Generative AI Trigger a Total Social Media Sh*tstorm

KoopaTheGamer

Good thing that they clarified it, but the original article certainly painted a different picture. That said, I don't really think it's necessary to use gen-AI even for inspiration for concept art.

I also don't appreciate the aggressive response from Swen, as the concern was completely valid and justified based on the article. Jason Schreier definitely should've worded the article better though.

Re: Sony Allegedly Encouraging Devs to Use PS5's New Low Power Mode, Prompting Fresh PS6 Handheld Speculation

KoopaTheGamer

@SeaDaVie PCs use as much power as they have been configured to use. But you can limit the power usage if you want to.

Anyway, that's really not the point I was making. I know perfectly well that architecture affects power usage. I'm just saying that I don't think you can realistically expect PS5 power saving mode level of performance with only a quarter of power usage in the next generation without sacrificing other settings. I think something like 50% of power usage is realistic though. And of course, with setting changes it's certainly possible to get PS5 games running on a handheld (as shown by Steam Deck, although with variable results).

Re: AI Accusations Have Killed a PS5, PS4 Game Just Two Days After Announcement

KoopaTheGamer

@Chip-Douglas You can call me ignorant and short sighted but I personally feel like you are the one who is wrong. I think it's important to realise the threat posed by AI in the future. Not only because of crappy AI art that could make artists lose their jobs, that's not the real threat. Instead I'm mostly worried about misinformation and scams. We're already seeing it and it will only get worse.

Now, I don't want to argue about it, so let's just agree to disagree.

Re: AI Accusations Have Killed a PS5, PS4 Game Just Two Days After Announcement

KoopaTheGamer

@Chip-Douglas On the other hand, AI is unpredictable and makes lots of mistakes. It's already being used in healthcare with mixed results. It may get better as time goes, but as models get more complex, the less anyone actually knows how they work internally. If even professionals of the field don't understand how something works, then it's kind of hard to trust it with your life. Instead of looking for cancer in the data it's being fed, it may be looking for something completely different and no one would know. Besides, as it stands right now, it does make mistakes. How many lifes should be ruined before we reach this utopia that you are talking about?

Re: Sony Estimated to Have Made $1.5 Billion from Steam, But the Novelty Is Wearing Off

KoopaTheGamer

@LogicStrikesAgain Thanks, but no thanks. Sure, their own launcher/store would benefit them in terms of revenue, but consumers would suffer. I'd rather see them being consumer friendly and release their games on Steam, Epic and possibly other stores as well. Let people choose where they want to get their games from.

Edit: To be clear, I wouldn't mind it as an option. Just release the games on Steam as well.

Re: Suddenly the PS5 Pro Doesn't Look That Expensive Anymore

KoopaTheGamer

Yes, the prices have gone up substantially, but this feels like a cherry picked example. You can find 64GB of DDR5 for less than 250€ if you're not going for cutting edge speeds. You can even get the same amount of very fast 6400Mhz DDR5 for less than 400€. Meanwhile, PS5 Pro is well over 800€ without the disc drive.

Re: Valve's Steam Machine May Not Be As Affordable As a PS5

KoopaTheGamer

@11001100110zero Since this is a PC, I'd imagine you can install Windows to it just fine. It's possible on Steam Deck so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible on Steam Machine. That would greatly improve game compatibility, although I personally wouldn't do that (since Windows is in many ways worse than Steam OS).

Re: Valve's Steam Machine May Not Be As Affordable As a PS5

KoopaTheGamer

I think it's important to remember that this thing is a PC and should be compared to other PCs with similar specs. Yes, it's likely going to be more expensive than a console, but it can also do quite a bit more. Simple things like using a browser or some text editing, or more complex things like editing videos or 3D modelling. But obviously this is designed with gaming in mind. I think the game selection made for PC is pretty appealing. Not only new games, but pretty much anything made in the last 3-4 decades or so, as long as you can find it on Steam, GOG, Epic or wherever you want.

Re: Valve's Steam Machine May Not Be As Affordable As a PS5

KoopaTheGamer

@Flaming_Kaiser Yes, with physical versions you own the physical disc but you only have the license to use the software.

Besides, the game may or may not work in the future when the servers are down, as you can't play games that require online connection or that require updates or that have only a portion of the game on disc. But that's a whole different conversation.

Re: Hands On: PS Portal Is a Whole New Device with Cloud Streaming Update

KoopaTheGamer

@RadioHedgeFund It depends on much more than just your broadband. It also depends on how far the servers are from you, how well optimized their network code is, what device you are playing on etc. Not to mention your router, especially with wireless devices like Portal. But even with ideal conditions, there will be additional latency.

Re: New EA Partnership Will 'Reimagine How Games Are Made' with AI

KoopaTheGamer

@JustMyOpinion Yes, it will get more common, but that doesn't mean that you need to like it. In my opinion the negative effects far outweight the positives, so I don't want to see generative AI used in game industry (AI upscaling like DLSS or PSSR are fine though, as they're not generating new assets, and are instead doing something that a human couldn't do to begin with).

I'll be voting with my wallet.
