Remember when Guitar Hero was one of the biggest video game franchises on the planet? Well, some of the original devs do, and they've regrouped to produce a spiritual successor.
RedOctane Games has announced Stage Tour, a rhythm action game built to be played using musical instrument peripherals.
The studio has many former staff from the old iteration of RedOctane, the team behind the original Guitar Hero games (alongside Harmonix of course) as well as the controllers themselves.
Stage Tour looks to revive this style of rhythm game that has largely been absent since the ill-fated Guitar Hero Live. Fan-maintained projects like Clone Hero, as well as Fortnite's Festival mode, have shown there is still some appetite for the genre, however.
As you can see in the above teaser trailer, the upcoming game will be very familiar to anyone who's played Guitar Hero or Rock Band in the past — a "highway" of coloured notes comes towards the screen, and it's your job to play them in order and with the right timing.
The idea is that you'll do this using controllers that look like instruments — primarily a guitar, but the game also supports roles of bass/groove, drums, and vocals. It seems new peripherals are being produced for the game.
Stage Tour aims to complement this familiar gameplay style with "new features and gamemodes, dozens of bandmates and instruments to fit your unique style, a deep competitive spine, and an extensive roadmap of seasonal content and live events."
It's coming to PC and as-yet-unspecified consoles this fall, with more information about platforms coming later.
What do you think about this project? Are you interested in Stage Tour and a return to the age of plastic guitar controllers? Tell us in the comments section below.

As someone who was working gaming retail when Guitar Hero was at its peak, and as someone who is a music obsessive (far more than videogames), I cannot articulate just how much I hate these things.
Better have a good list of songs
I'd be interested but it all depends on the range of songs and the extent of monetisation.
I used to love guitar hero tbh
@Americansamurai1
Songs always make or break those games.
I have very fond memories of playing RockBand with friends ^___^
Setlist has to be killer for this game to be worth anything. Also praying the peripherals could be compatible with other franchises but maybe that’s too optimistic lol
What is this now... "*6*th time's the charm"?
I mean, good luck to them, my uni days were filled with long afternoons passing the plastic guitar back and forth with my buddies when we should have been studying, but I thought we had enough examples of this genre failing by now.
Do you happen to know whether the existing guitar peripherals will work with this game, @Quintumply? Or do we have to buy the new ones? Thanks...
Oh look, more landfill.
@MichaelNau same lol even going back to the first guitar hero really enjoyed that sondtrack
Some of us never got to live our Guitar Hero main character arc and this is our redemption
Micro transaction central no doubt. But I loved the six million dollar man quotes in the video.
I am a sucker for these. DAMN.
I still have all of the games and couple of guitars. It would be hard to beat the roster on Warriors of Rock and music licenses aren't as cheap as they once were, they might get the hardware down but I can see a lot of paid for DLC tracks. It's half a million to license AC/DC now for a game. They had a whole Rock Track Pack back in 2009. The labels were throwing music at games left right and center, now they want a big pay day. Prices have more than doubled with some labels and so has the system.
I've been following that game for a while now, the trailer footage is months old and was used for test audiences. The Devs confirmed it on their Discord, they are planning better mo-cap. IGN pushed it for Fan Fest 2026, we're seeing a very unpolished version of the game. If anyone thinks it looks dated, that's why.
My kids found the DK drums from the Gamecube, much to my wife's annoyance because of the noice they make. I don't think she'll appreciate me buying these.
