Remember when Guitar Hero was one of the biggest video game franchises on the planet? Well, some of the original devs do, and they've regrouped to produce a spiritual successor.
RedOctane Games has announced Stage Tour, a rhythm action game built to be played using musical instrument peripherals.
The studio has many former staff from the old iteration of RedOctane, the team behind the original Guitar Hero games (alongside Harmonix of course) as well as the controllers themselves.
Stage Tour looks to revive this style of rhythm game that has largely been absent since the ill-fated Guitar Hero Live. Fan-maintained projects like Clone Hero, as well as Fortnite's Festival mode, have shown there is still some appetite for the genre, however.
As you can see in the above teaser trailer, the upcoming game will be very familiar to anyone who's played Guitar Hero or Rock Band in the past — a "highway" of coloured notes comes towards the screen, and it's your job to play them in order and with the right timing.
The idea is that you'll do this using controllers that look like instruments — primarily a guitar, but the game also supports roles of bass/groove, drums, and vocals. It seems new peripherals are being produced for the game.
Stage Tour aims to complement this familiar gameplay style with "new features and gamemodes, dozens of bandmates and instruments to fit your unique style, a deep competitive spine, and an extensive roadmap of seasonal content and live events."
It's coming to PC and as-yet-unspecified consoles this fall, with more information about platforms coming later.
What do you think about this project? Are you interested in Stage Tour and a return to the age of plastic guitar controllers? Tell us in the comments section below.

As someone who was working gaming retail when Guitar Hero was at its peak, and as someone who is a music obsessive (far more than videogames), I cannot articulate just how much I hate these things.
Better have a good list of songs
I'd be interested but it all depends on the range of songs and the extent of monetisation.
I used to love guitar hero tbh
@Americansamurai1
Songs always make or break those games.
I have very fond memories of playing RockBand with friends ^___^
Setlist has to be killer for this game to be worth anything. Also praying the peripherals could be compatible with other franchises but maybe that’s too optimistic lol
What is this now... "*6*th time's the charm"?
I mean, good luck to them, my uni days were filled with long afternoons passing the plastic guitar back and forth with my buddies when we should have been studying, but I thought we had enough examples of this genre failing by now.
Do you happen to know whether the existing guitar peripherals will work with this game, @Quintumply? Or do we have to buy the new ones? Thanks...
Oh look, more landfill.
@MichaelNau same lol even going back to the first guitar hero really enjoyed that sondtrack
Some of us never got to live our Guitar Hero main character arc and this is our redemption
Micro transaction central no doubt. But I loved the six million dollar man quotes in the video.
I am a sucker for these. DAMN.
I still have all of the games and couple of guitars. It would be hard to beat the roster on Warriors of Rock and music licenses aren't as cheap as they once were, they might get the hardware down but I can see a lot of paid for DLC tracks. It's half a million to license AC/DC now for a game. They had a whole Rock Track Pack back in 2009. The labels were throwing music at games left right and center, now they want a big pay day. Prices have more than doubled with some labels and so has the system.
I've been following that game for a while now, the trailer footage is months old and was used for test audiences. The Devs confirmed it on their Discord, they are planning better mo-cap. IGN pushed it for Fan Fest 2026, we're seeing a very unpolished version of the game. If anyone thinks it looks dated, that's why.
My kids found the DK drums from the Gamecube, much to my wife's annoyance because of the noice they make. I don't think she'll appreciate me buying these.
C'mon, my PS3/PS4 guitars and drums are still ready. Even DJ Hero turntable...
I would also love Rocksmith, but input lag was so high it was unplayable.
@Fiendish-Beaver I haven't seen any info on this, but I would hope that any controllers that work on modern day systems will work with this. Hopefully they clarify soon.
I missed the whole rhythm period due to playing WoW all the time, then I coundnt get anything for modern platforms or it was too overpriced. Looking forward for this one, specially the drums
Haven't played these games in years. Got kids now and I think they'd love this. Hopefully the setlist is great.
I’m as expert as one can get without ever being able to beat Through the Fire and the Flames.. literally thousands of hours between every game.. my hype for this as a 36yo w 2 teenage kids has been through the roof since the rumors started..
Until I saw this video 😭 Tf are these character models?? The track and buttons look horrid 😭 And that new name is.. well.. something
Guess I’ll have to keep breaking out my 360.. it’s just.. by the time I get it out of the closet, dust it off, plug it up, and get my old usb to work.. I play like 2 songs and suddenly all of my desire to play is gone
Harmonix and Mad Catz were a little too early when they revived Rock Band back in 2015, but if the crazy secondary market prices for old peripherals are anything to go by, people are ready this time. Count me in for this.
@Americansamurai1
I remember having a friend of mine who had a mic stand where we could put the RB mic on and we'd just play at being rock stars lol
My only grief, which isn't really one, was that as we were mixing gamers and non gamers, non gamers usually had the mic and we let them select the track, so I rarely had the chance play all my favorites
This has me hyped , still play RB and GH to this day .... Lets Go !!!!
I kinda miss the days of Guitar Hero, so I'm not opposed to the idea! Let's see how it goes
I've been playing guitar hero again recently and it's still just as good as ever. It's about time it made a proper return as it was a brilliant franchise.
As long as they, or someone, accounts for adapters to use the OG instruments, this will be great.
I know my convention scene still has packed stations for Rock Band and Taiko Drum'n Fun!
I’d like them to come out without needing a console. Just hook right into the tv. Game built into the controllers
I tried clonehero a year or two ago and had my old RB guitar and boy oh boy, my hand was hurting like hell after doing that for like 30 or so mins. I couldn't tell if it was just the awkwardness of the RB guitar (plus every song being on expert--not usually my wheelhouse) or an aging thing lol
Maybe a better fitting peripheral would work better. But that is just one a few check boxes for me before I would consider this.
I expect the 2nd hand marker for the guitar and drum kit to go through the roof now
Spent thousands of hours and £££s on the GH/Rock Band games...'you son of a bitch, I'm in'
I’m excited. Small studio with passion. Chance to bring in new generation of players. I hope the best for this game.
About time. Rhythm action games are flow state heaven, and a great way to appreciate music differently.
Please keep it casual this time. It should be air guitar with a scoring mechanic, not a way to learn guitar.
