@Neither_scene It's not mentioned in this article, but the game already supports ray traced reflections and shadows. It's mentioned in the PSN page as well as Steam page.
@Neither_scene The article mentions clearly that it does run 4K120 even on base PS5. Supporting both 4K120 and 8K60 is super cool, even if only a handful of people actually have 8K screens.
It's all about pacing. I enjoy a good storyline, but I don't want to watch 30 minutes+ cutscenes. Place the cutscenes evenly between gameplay and it's a much more enjoyable experience.
@Lavishturtle Well, at least Dragon Age: The Veilguard wasn't awful. It didn't meet EA's expectations but it didn't flop horribly either. I think there's still some hope for Bioware.
@MajorityThomas The things is, this is art generation. Instead of someone writing this scientific mumbo-jumbo, they made AI do it. Writing is art just as much as making paintings or sprites for a game. Sure, it's not like this is directly part of the story, but even small things contribute to the world building.
I'm sure it would've sold better if it was released on Xbox the same day as PS5. A lot of people have already played the game on PS5 or PC, or seen live streams about it.
Speaking of adapters, I wish Sony would allow 3rd party controllers to work on PS5 games without the official (and supposedly expensive) license. Sure, there are some officially licensed arcade sticks and leverless controllers that work on PS5, but a lot of controllers require an adapter (like the Brook Wingman).
I can understand the comparisons to Game Key Cards on Switch 2, but these kind of releases have existed for ages on Playstation and Xbox. Not most games thankfully, but some.
@ATaco I have a Steam Deck and absolutely love it (got LCD model first and upgraded to OLED model later). But while the cheapest Steam Deck is cheaper than Switch 2, it doesn't include a dock. You will also need a controller if you want to play it docked. Switch 2 offers both the dock and the controller. And a 120hz 1080p screen with VRR support.
I feel like Switch 2's featureset justifies the price. Yes, games are expensive, but the hardware is priced pretty fairly in my opinion.
@UltimateOtaku91 @ATaco It may be one generation behind as a console, but as a handheld device, it's quite powerful. Street Fighter 6 looked much better than what it looks like on Steam Deck for example.
It's also important to note that while in terms of raw power it's about as powerful as PS4, but it also supports a bunch of features that PS4 does not, like hardware accelerated ray-tracing and DLSS (although we'll have to see how often they will be used). It also has 12GB of RAM which is more than PS4 (or Series S).
@Dragoon1994 There will be games that are completely on the card on Switch 2, just like there are PS5 games that only have few kilobytes on disc and download the rest. It's pretty much the same situation on both machines, although it remains to be seen how many games on Switch 2 will be Game Key cards and how many will have the full game.
There's so much misinformation about this on the internet, it's ridiculous.
@graymamba This doesn't seem to be game as a service/live service game. Multiplayer yes, but not live service. We don't even know for sure if it can be played single player or not.
Those Game Key carts are basically an evolution (and improvement) over the "code in the box" releases that came with a download code in the box. Now you can lend the carts to your friends and even resell it later (or at least that's what I understood).
The upgrades on the other hand seem pretty fair to me. I think those two Zelda upgrades are 10€, and not only offer substantial graphical improvements but new features as well.
One area where PS5 shines is Astro's Playroom. Great freebie that comes with the console. Nintendo doesn't have anything like that (although they do offer "free" games with the online subscription).
@LifeGirl To be honest, it's not that convoluted, it just demands a lot from the player and pretty much requires you to play all of the games in order to understand the story properly.
I guess it's not a huge surprise. A lot of people have played these games already on Xbox or PC years ago. It's a shame to see Pentiment selling poorly (if these numbers are to be believed), as that's one of the more interesting releases here.
Well, at least Sea of Thieves has sold well. Deservedly so, as it's a super cool game with continuing support.
@NorrinRadd I'm the exact opposite then. The parts taking place in modern day take me out of the experience. I just wish they would get rid of those parts completely.
I think it's important to remember that individual changes don't paint the whole picture. As an example, they may have added chip damage to throws, but maybe they also made them easier to break or nerfed the damage made by throws?
To be clear, I have no idea if that's what happened here, but you should always consider the bigger picture and all of the changes made to the game. Both with major changes and also when certain characters/moves are buffed/nerfed.
Would've been cool to see the PS2/PSP games on PS store, but oh well. I don't personally care if games are released to celebrate anniversary, so I would be more than happy if they get released some random week in the future.
@Tulipanzo I dislike frame generation in games as well, but the tech is not exactly the same as frame interpolation/motion smoothing you'll find on most TVs. Yes, both form an interpolated image between two images, but the frame-gen on PC uses motion vectors to improve the result.
The problem is, while it will be better than the motion smoothing on your TV, it will still have added latency and visual artifacts. It should never be used with less than 60fps base framerate.
She has some great points. That tech demo obviously wasn't very polished and sounded nothing like Aloy. But it's not that far off, and the fact that they're experimenting with it should be a massive red flag. I hope the actors get some sort of protection from AI through the strikes.
@Americansamurai1 I think it finds a good balance between arcadey and realistic. Realistic enough to be believable, but arcadey enough to be actually fun to play.
If it's more affordable than a PC with similar specs but can still run games from Steam/Windows store etc, while also having a TV friendly user interface... it actually sounds pretty darn good. We'll see if any of that is true, though.
@Flaming_Kaiser It's true that PC is a very expensive initial purchase, but as long as you get a decent build, it's enough to upgrade parts of it in the future. For example, you can get a new GPU that is as powerful as PS5 Pro but around half the price.
As for games being "rentals"... Well, so are all digital games on Playstation store. Technically even physical PS5 games only give you a license to play the game, not actual ownership of it. Yes, you will have the disc, but quite often the game requires additional downloads or online authentication to work anyway. There are also PC marketplaces that sell DRM free games (like GOG).
@Glorioso It affects preservation if you can't play the game when Microsoft closes their current account system. It may be years off, but it's not unusual for companies to close/replace their digital infrastructure.
I have Microsoft account and have played this game, but I wish the account was completely optional, just like I wish PSN was completely optional on PC. Not a big deal though, I'm not 100% sure if I'll be getting the PS5 version anyway. Maybe on sale.
@rusty82 It's pretty much always the case that the 1/10 option gets more votes than 2/10, 3/10 etc that should logically get more votes as they are far more realistic (although still super low for this game). I think 1/10 should be for games that are completely broken or not games at all (like those somewhat recent AI storybook titles).
Anyway, 8.5/10 for me, but I rounded it up to 9/10 on the poll.
@Dragoon1994 Yeah. To be fair, with Monster Hunter the real game generally begins with the high rank when the story has ended. The hunts themselves are just as fun as before, so if you can manage to survive through the story quests and their handholding, things are going to get a lot better.
8.5/10. It's a darn good game. But 1.5 points is taken from the technical difficulties and also because the story quests often take control away from the player. But still, it's a very good game.
@Hapless I'm pretty sure Spider-Man 2 sold kind of disappointingly initially because it had some performance issues. The sales did improve later, though.
But yeah, I agree overall. This is not only a PC problem either. Console gamers should also vote with their wallets if a game releases with major technical issues.
@Hapless Monster Hunter sells because it's a beloved game series that has proven itself time and again. As a new IP, Rise of the Ronin doesn't have that benefit. In general, if PC game has major technical difficulties, it will reflect in sales.
It's interesting that they launched FSR4 (which absolutely crushes PSSR) only half a year after the release of PS5 Pro. Only on their new GPUs, though.
This is such a bad idea. If you could keep the device after paying the total amount equivalent to retail price (or slightly more), it would be fine. But as it is, it just doesn't make sense.
It's not super difficult, but I'm still playing through the main story (how on earth are some people already over HR100?). It's not mind numbingly easy either, so I'm overall pretty okay with the difficulty.
I actually wouldn't mind it. I prefer the more arcadey structure of THPS 1-3, but I think THPS 4 has some of my favourite levels. Although they probably should increase the time limit to 3 or 4 minutes instead of 2, some of those maps are pretty big.
@Frmknst I mean, I guess you could say that it's somewhat mainstream as Monster Hunter is absolutely massive in Japan. Up there with Dragon Quest etc.
But it's popular for a reason. Monster Hunter has such a great gameplay loop and the combat is pretty excellent. Wilds has some technical issues, but it's a lot of fun nonetheless.
