Rumour: PS Portal OLED Version Coming This Year

Yes I think with the rumoured delayed to the PS6 and thus the handheld, the OLED upgrade makes a lot of sense

Definitely makes the portal more appealing! Still wondering should I just hold out for the portable Playstation next year or the year after though

i´ll stick with my og Portal, its amazing even without OLED

Personally think these kinda upgrades are pointless....I don't notice any real difference(cue somebody telling me I must be blind)

Not supporting Bluetooth earbuds is a deal-breaker for me.

@StylesT You may not but others will, heck I have friends who can't tell the difference between 30 and 60FPS...

Bought a portal this week and I honestly dont feel it needs an OLED. Its a great bit of kit and the remote play works great, better than any other options and I've tried them all. The cloud streaming is the cherry on top.

A better internet connection would tempt me to pick one up. But living in Oz, I’m on koala speed.

The colors on the PS Portal look great as is even without an OLED. On the other hand it would benefit greatly with at least being able to run a set of PS4 games natively (effectively being a digital only PS Vita). Now that would be a mid-gen upgrade I would be willing to pay for.

I‘m also happy with the LCD. And local play would be fantastic. But as long as there is no local play of PS1, PS2 and PSP games, I highly doubt that we will see any other platforms than that.

For local play of PS1, PS2 and PSP games, I would even subscribe for PS Plus Premium!

OLED screen would really make the graphics 'pop' but I think the current LCD screen is really very good, so no reason for me to upgrade but great for new users.

Would be good if they opened it up for using any bluetooth headset rather then just the special Sony ones though,.
Other slightly dodgy request would be a nice hack or mod to allow streaming from any device, not just PS5 but I guess that's wish too far.

Finally, this is of course a big winner for SONY and has probably influenced the decision to include a rumoured PS6 handheld as part of the new SKU. The OLED product is also part of the conditioning of the current PS5 community to be readily acceptable to 'upgrade' to the PS6 version when it arrives.

The screen is not enough. The compression of the stream tends to crush the blacks in my experience, causing a loss of detail in dark scenes that wasn't helped by the poor screen.

In addition to the OLED it needs a higher bitrate. If not possible with console to Portal streaming, at least the web streaming should be improved.

@Oram77 Me and the wife got a Switch 2 last year and every time we play Mario Kart I am basically screaming at her “Look at the 60fps! Look how much better it is than Switch 1!!! Appreciate the smoooothness dammit!”…..she claims to notice absolutely no difference and could not care less. Same thing when we switched from SD to HD tvs years ago. She thinks I’m a crazy idiot.

The low bitrate is really one of the worst downsides, together with the time delay between sound and vision. The fact that PS5 Pro didn’t bring a better PS Portal support was very disappointing to me, otherwise I would’ve bought one.

@Czar_Khastik that would cost atleast 2-3x more expensive. You sure you would buy it?

If the improvement is only in OLED, it doesn't make sense to me.

If it has better remote play technology to improve streaming, technology to improve input lag, Bluetooth... if it has that, maybe it makes sense.

Just the screen, I don't think it makes sense.

This might be tempting, although like others have said, the current LCD looks quite good. It will have to depend on the price of this new model. I doubt I’ll upgrade, but if the price is right, maybe I’ll flip my current Portal for the new one.

On a separate but related note, over the last two weeks I’ve had a couple times when I had to wait in a queue for Cloud streaming to start. One time the wait was really quick, basically a few extra seconds, and the other time it was looking to be longer so I just aborted and went to play directly on console. I’m guessing this is due to increasing popularity of the cloud streaming services and server demand. So far it hasn’t spoiled my positive opinion of the service, but I hope that it doesn’t become more common.

I really just want a stand-alone hand held game system from Sony again that’s capable of playing ps5 and 4 games natively.

An OLED panel is nice but if it still has the same input latency as the current model than its still not something I'm interested in. I like the idea of the device and would buy one of it didn't have that issue

The only thing holding me back from buying a Portal is that you need internet to use it.

Just get a Gamesir Galileo G8 and use it with a phone already with OLED, save yourself the money.

Let me know when a PS Portal "Better streaming stability" version hits the market...

I adore my portal and think the LCD screen is of very high quality. The best thing about the machine is the ergonomics. Very comfortable to play on. I would be tempted by the oled upgrade is priced appropriately....

I think the screen is absolutely great as it is. I bought a Portal in December and an OLED upgrade doesn't sound too exciting to me.

I personally feel like it's a waste of an OLED panel to put it in a remote play device. I just don't find the concept appealing due to additional latency, artefacts caused by low bitrate etc. Yes, I've tried it multiple times, and yes, I do notice the latency and downgraded visuals.

That said, I'm glad some people are enjoying theirs. While it's easy to recommend a handheld PC or a Switch 2, those are also more expensive and can't run all the games as well. So I can see the benefits even if I'd never want to get one myself.

For me the screen is already pretty good. But still nice for people who havent bought one to have the option.

What i would like to see the is the ability to stream games 1:1 off the console without lag like the Wii U gamepad was able to, but seeing as im no expert in these kinds of things, i’m probably asking for something impossible

@get2sammyb Should have had OLED to begin with. With HDR being integral part of modern media consumption , a standard edge lit IPS is now barely baseline. Perhaps costs held them back, or they wanted to set 'anchor' price among customers with first iteration since it was practically a new category. Seeing people are more than willing to pay for such a device, there are a lot of bells and whistles which can now be added. Although I wonder if they will first launch 400nits units and then bump up peak brightness in another iteration later. Note: I do not own a Portal.

In a instance. I would deffo pick up. Be great if it has a 1440p screen too
