@Crimson_Ridley Not sure that's the problem most people had.
The issue wasn't with the volume, it was the quality of the titles being showcased. Firstly PSVR only targets a select amount of their customer base, for a lot of people it's of little to no consequence.
Secondly, whilst Sony may have been transparent about the fact that the showcase was mainly going to be PS4 games, that doesn't suddenly alleviate them of people being critical of whats being put on show.
Sony did a fantastic PS5 reveal, which I think the vast majority of Sony fans felt was a respectable showcase, and got people hyped about what's to come.
This state of play just did not hit the mark for a lot of people, and it's ok (and furthermore, reasonable) for us to voice our greivances on why we thought it didn't reach a reasonable level of expectation.
@Bejito81 Yeah, but I think you misunderstood what @ShogunRok was saying.
He was saying the format, as in the way the State Of Play is laid out, as far as process, design and formatting goes, not the actual content.
Since the actual content is highly subjective on whether it was good or not, all you can do is go on the numbers, and with that I agree with you on it, the presentation clearly didn't hit all the right notes for the vast majority of people here.
@Bejito81 To be fair, he said the format was "solid", and it is imho.
What wasn't "solid" was the actual presentation itself.
Just looking at the response at least 28% of people here thought it was lacklustre, and a further 40% thought if was just passable. So at the very best that 68% of the viewers here who didn't exactly have their socks blown off, and only 32% who thought it was actually good, or better.
Still got a ways to go to knock it's predecessor off the chart, but then it's had 23 years to gather over 13 millions sales.
5 mill in a few short months is a real achievement, and I'm glad it's happened as it will drive Square Enix forward in completing the unreleased episodes. What we don't want is a Shenmue situation.
@LiamCroft Wonder if that means we'll see some Demon Souls gameplay? Could be interesting State Of Play if we get some solid gameplay showcases for PS5 material.
Dynasty Warriors 4352, now with every single historical figure in the history of asian culture, and the same old levels rehashed, but now in 120 frames, and with customizable neckties and socks, and new voice acting including excellent new exciting phrases like "OWWW" and "UGGH" to enhance your gaming experience.
@S1ayeR74 I get that, I do. I mean, I'm really intrigued as well. But i'm equally gassed the PS5 is coming out soon.
I understand peoples anticipation, it's the borderline obsession I don't get, and next level entitlement of "I want, I want" approach, as opposed to curious questioning, or enthusiastic rallying. To each their own I guess.
@naruball PS+ will never be free, because (a) As you said it's a goldmine, (b) It's the main source of funds for multiplayer functionality and server maintanence, and (c) It pays for part of the budgeting costs for Sony to make deals with 3rd party companies to allow us to have free games each month.
@nessisonett Makes 100% sense for customers, but 0% sense for business.
Whilst we are all here for the sake of entertainment, and rightfully that is our priority, we need to remember that Sony, MS, Nintendo etc are big conglomerate businesses, that literally rely on exclusivity to edge them out again competition. Exclusives make total sense from a business perspective, and for that reason it needs to be respected.
@Samqvist It's lost revenue. I mean, I don't know if you could say it would damage them financially, but it's still a measurable loss of profit due to people using the credit instead of their own funds.
@tomassi Let's revisit this conversation in 20 years.
I'm not saying they're going anyway anytime soon, but everything can be beaten by something else, otherwise we've doomed the internet, and indeed our ability to seek out new experience to rusting away in perpetuity.
Innovation breeds new experiences. Something one day will come along and trump it's predecessor through a new way of experiencing whatever it was that was being provided. It's only a matter of time.
Literally the only things on the internet which I feel are almost completely detached from this course are probably Google's search engine, and YouTube (at least until there is a new way of experiencing media that takes precedence over the current status quo).
@Matroska Again, you're comparing Facebook in the peak of the digital social media age against a social media platform that was still a developing platform.
Myspace didn't command the numbers facebook did, but much like currency and inflation, at the time (2007) MySpace was a big deal, it was the pinnacle of personal social media before emerging tech like FB and Twitter took over.
@Abeedo Ok, fair enough, bad example. But there isn't really anything that comes along thats been able to provide a better experience at what its trying to do than minecraft, so it makes sense that it's still the best at what it does.
There are plenty of world builders, but nothing that can appeal to the widest demographic that minecraft does.
These games all share one thing in common, mass appeal. I still say though, eventually these games will wane, as new technology takes hold and better games become available.
Even World Of Warcraft has eventually sustained heavy losses due to it's tech being so behind the times. And you have people who have invested over a decade in their characters, and yet the numbers continue to dwindle.
@tomassi You can't compare Facebook at it's peak to Myspace at it's peak, when social media was still in it's infancy stage.
Myspace at the time was the leading social media platform generating in excess of 70 million unique visits a month before the rise of Facebook (that was insanely huge at the time, circa 2007 ish).
When Facebook came out it was the underdog, it had to work to move the userbase that was entrenched in myspace culture at the time of it's arrival. The reason it worked, was because it had an amazing amount of financial investment, as well as innovation to shoot it into the stratasphere.
In much the same manner, Fortnite may be the current leader, but that doesn't mean it will be forever. Minecraft came before it, it's only a matter of time before the next big game takes it's place.
In regards to PUBG, that game didn't have the same mass appeal that Fortnite did, which was aimed at the young and old market alike and because of that it was able to hit such a wide demographic.
Once Battle Royales have been done to death, something else will come along in due course to replace it.
@Samqvist The way you said that makes me think you don't have that good a grasp on business.
Just because it's not physical money, doesn't mean it doesn't have an effect on their net revenue as an expense, that money that is given to people is used instead of their actual funds, in turn this would be money Sony will directly lose out on by giving this free credit, it therefore will be listed as an expense before calculating their net revenue.
I haven't had a chance to read all the comments on this article. But let me just say if you're one of the people complaining and crying about not receiving a £10/$10/€10 you really need to reevaluate your life priorities.
Just because Facebook is the current best, doesn't mean something better won't come around and take it's place. Facebook took over because it was revolutionary, with the wall, and other similar cutting edge social media technology that separated it from the current leader, which at the time was myspace.
However, in this particular instance, this game has little innovation, and certainly not enough to steal the crown from Fortnite.
@nessisonett I think you might be one of the few with that viewpoint. I think a lot of people felt that Xbox completely missed the boat with their showcase, and being someone that never likes to follow the masses for the sake of it, I still happen to agree with that statement.
As per usual the problem Microsoft often makes is that they don't know their demographics wants and needs and therefore are way off base.
Sony, for the most part are hugely in touch with the gaming community, and it shows. When their hardware is outperforming Xbox by nearly 3 consoles sold to 1, I'm amazed that Microsoft haven't taken huge steps to rectify their approach. I still feel like their plodding along, hoping that their statistics of the new console will do the talking for them. Unfortunately for them, I don't think it will.
I think they're going too heavy on this too early. Whilst The Witcher was hugely successful, it was due significantly to the popularity of the game series, and the lofty protagonist Geralt Of Rivia.
Creating a new series so early on after just one season to introduce the Netflix viewing public, to then announce a spin off series set 1200 years before the series most beloved period seems a huge gamble. Not sure it will be watched by as many as they may hope.
Quite a few obscure games. Not sure this quiz is really representative of a PS2 player. Considering the library of PS2 is vast, would be better to at least do mostly midtier games, not ones that literally hardly anyone played.
This is disgusting behaviour. Whether you think there is a political narrative in the game, or not. Personal death threats because of someones work is unacceptable, and furthermore completely undermines any point you may have had in making, by acting like a complete and utter p****k.
8/20. That's exceptional, since I haven't played it since it's initial launch over 20 years ago. Pretty decent memory. I'm amazed I remembered the ingredients for the Lionheart. Was in the back of my mind somewhere in a dusty filing cabinet.
@doctommaso To each their own. I have friends who swear by Indies. I see the appeal, it's just not appealing to me most of the time.
Indies tend to be a particular mechanic or narrative repeated through an entire experience, and probably on a budgeted production value.
As an example of something that did it right for me, was overcooked, but only because I had a bunch of friends to play it with, and it was daft, straight up fun. 90% of indies I play are tired, boring, or just the same stuff regurgitated in a different skin. But I digress, I just find AAA titles to be more appealing, and deeper experiences overall.
@doctommaso You may not be wrong. But I'm not a fan of what is basically the digital version of bargain bin hunting.
Spending hours looking at, and reviewing a bunch of indy games that likely 9 out of 10 will not be appealing to me, would almost certainly make me feel like I could be doing more constructive things with my time.
With the exception of a staunch few (Overcooked I'm looking at you), I have never been a fan of many indy games, never tend to scratch much of an itch, and the production value tends to rarely appeal to me, unless the game mechanics are outstanding.
4/15 - Haven't played a multitude of those games, most of them not my bag.
However, something else I realized from this, is how horribly generic some of the flavour text is for the descriptions. I mean, some of them are so generic they could of been any of the games listed (even if you were to have been someone who had played the game).
@Lumic I assuming you're referring to metacritic? Most of it is just upset people who haven't played the game, ive seen some genuine reviews amongst the straight up hate, but they represent the tiniest sliver of the public, so in the bigger picture aren't that representative.
@Lumic Sarcasm aside. It's simple, critics are are not representatives on a games legacy, the public are. Because those are the consumers, and the games are made for the consumers not the critics. Also critics can be bought and therefore write disingenuous reviews, especially when it involves titles that can generate a lot of cash. Due to the limited amount of certified critics this can end up with a heavily skewed score. The general public when equalled out over the masses provides a more definitive and accurate account of the games actual critical acclaim.
@Lumic I consider collective views to be a more accurate representation. Suffice to say I discount metacritic as it is filled with trolls and idiots who haven't even played the game. However, having said that, I assure you whilst the game has been well received by critics, it has not been across the board agreement with the general public as a whole. Also, I never said it's a bad game, but it's also not universally accepted as being an uncriticizable masterpiece. Protecting your dream game with fanboy blinders on doesnt do yourself any justice. Try to appreciate perspectives outside of your own, I appreciate some people want this to be god tier because they love the genre and style so much, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
@dark_knightmare2 The people are what truly matters. Critics only represent a very small portion of people who have played the game and their opinions are not infallible or without fault. Not to mention the horrendous amount of inside corruption that is involved with the insidious side or review payoffs, but that's another matter. Bottom line, if critics are all you base anything off, you're not much of a critical thinker, or able to come to your own conclusions. Believe me, there are a lot of people who dont consider this a critical hit. The very fact that there is a discourse between two sides in this comment section is testament to that fact.
I'm still going to stand defiantly in the face of gushing praise and say this game for me was just good, and most of that was propped up by the graphics and gameplay.
To me, it's just another zombie horror apocalypse that has better narratives than the others.
I respect peoples opinions to the contrary, i'm just not part of the gang for this, and will say that honestly, it was just "good".
Also, for people who try to make their opinion a matter of fact by stating sales, please note that sales can be a measurement of success, but not necessarily viewed as critically great by the masses. Movies like "Transformers" have grossed as some of the biggest box office hits of all time, but have been critically panned. There's controversy over whether this is a critical hit or not, a lot of people don't agree it to be so.
Not to take this comment out of context, I still think it's a 7.5-8, that's pretty damn good still. I just don't think it's as good as the people literally putting it as some sort of god tier material, a flawless masterpiece that cannot be criticized, or disagreed with. Cause it just ain't so.
This was one of the things I was genuinely concerned about when I watched the gameplay reveal.
No limbs were being severed, even with clear attacks that would of taken them clean off. I'm assumed they turned it off for the reveal in order to keep it somewhat family friendly, or if there is an option to play without it.
I however, want the full samurai experience, bring it on.

Pretty uninspired, and left feeling generally deflated by the state of play.

They're getting better, but no where near the level of Steam in terms of value. Steam have triple A titles for absurd prices, literally a few quid.

@Rob_230 With the intent of not coming across as too cynical, I'm going to assume this is not a heavy dose of sarcasm, and say thanks.
Re: The Last of Us 2 Is the Fastest Selling PS4 Exclusive Ever, Over 4 Million Sold in Three Days
Re: Overcooked 2's Next Free DLC, Sun's Out Buns Out, Is Ready to Eat on PS4 Next Month
Still one of the greatest co-operative games made, and the only one where i've played all the dlc with my best mate.
Re: Ghost of Tsushima Age Rating Details Decapitation, Dismemberment, and a Man's Buttocks
