Re: Soapbox: The Witcher 3's Post-Netflix Resurgence Proves There's Untapped Cross-Media Potential in Games

Grindagger

I wouldn't get ahead of yourself here.

Sure, the Witcher was great on Netflix, amazing even. But that does not mean that others that would try to follow would be a resounding success.

In the movie franchise, it's been shown clearly on nearly every occasion that games>movies just does not work in a medium, and the reason is that people that make movies try to appeal to the masses rather than the actual people who like the content. What this tends to do is alienate the actual fans, and the film often itself isn't strong enough to stand up enough on it's own two feet to be quality content, so it ends up falling flat.

What made Witcher so unique is it didn't give a f*** about the general populace and almost completely pandered to the fans, which clearly worked. Maybe others will follow suit, but I'm not too hopeful at this present moment.

Re: Game of the Year: Push Square Readers' Top 10 PS4 Games of 2019

Grindagger

Never rated Days Gone, just found it drab and uninspiring. I get that people enjoyed it though. I think it appeals to a wide demographic of players and also the casual market. And zombies are always a guaranteed hit. The game was stable in terms of bugs and playability, so there's that.

I dunno, I guess overall I'm really just a whole lot of indifferent and "meh" about the game.

Re: Game of the Year: #3 - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Grindagger

@Powerpellet "A superhard game with lots of memorization that plays like a fighting game of Simon?"

That is what you wrote. No quoting in your statement. You then went on to comment on the reason why that wouldn't appeal to you. So, whilst at best you may not have said it, as it was a question, you were acknowledging that sentiment with your following reply.

Re: PS5 Specs Leak Sends the Web into a Frenzy

Grindagger

@carlos82 The thing is I don't necessarily disagree with all that you said.

I'm not saying Power is better than games, i simply said that power is still important, and it is....and here's why.

You've quoted historical differences in sales of consoles, whilst these may have proven to have been the case, I think today we're in a much more technologically savvy based consumer base.

Graphics, hi-fidelity, and resolution are all sought after components of what makes a modern gaming experience enhanced. With the explosion of 4k TVs, and talk of support of 8k in the near future, there is a clear, and growing demand for more powerful tech to satisfy customer demand.

To clarify further, I'm not saying it's the most important factor. Of course games, and gameplay are of paramount importance. But a lack of power ultimately only limits the content that device is going to be able to support.

Nintendo is really in it's own race, by itself, whilst it's competitive, it mostly rides off it's own coat tails in terms of the content it's putting out. A lot of them are Nintendo exclusives, or made by Nintendo themselves, with a smattering of much more limited versions of the Xbox/PS4/PC game releases.

If it were just a bit more powerful it would be able to handle a lot of current graphical quality games to hit the market, but it has sacrificed that for portability. It's really, in essence it's own market.

To summarize, my perspective is that games are the most important factor in anything, yes, but power is still relevant and a deciding factor for a lot of people these days. Particularly in these days.

Re: PS5 Specs Leak Sends the Web into a Frenzy

Grindagger

@dskatter The problem with that is, that the switch cannot port a vast majority of modern game releases, because it just does not have the power to support those games.

So, whilst people on here are screaming "Games > Power" in some sort of tribal chant, it doesn't detract from the fact that power is absolutely important. It defines technological progress, frame stabiity, resolution compability, and console longevity.

To say it's unimportant, is about as ignorant a statement someone can make. Now to say it "shouldn't" matter is subjective, but that's another discussion.

Re: PS5 Specs Leak Sends the Web into a Frenzy

Grindagger

@RBMango Speak for yourself. Console power is an important prospect for a lot of consumers. Not that it's going to be a deciding factor on which console to purchase, but it's a good indicator of it's capabilities in terms of graphical prowess, and frame stability.

Re: Game of the Year: #3 - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Grindagger

@Powerpellet With due respect this is an extremely shallow perspective of a game with far more depth that you're letting on.

I'm guessing here, but from what you've said your opinion sounds like it comes from someone who has never actually played the game, because, if you had played it you'd realize how silly your comments sound from someone who has played and completed the game in it's entirity. The nuanced styles that players need to adapt to every enemy is measurable, and requires planning and a certain degree of forethought.

Anyway you cut it, it's far more complex a game than playing "Simon". But since you won't play it due to your biased and uninformed view, I guess you'll never know it, which is a great shame.

Re: Game of the Year: #3 - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Grindagger

One of my favourite games of all time.

I understand it's not everyones cup of tea. But my tempered patience, and thirst for strategic development makes this game extremely appealing to me.

I platinumed this, and still continued playing after completing everything. This is extremely rare for me. The combat was thrilling, deft, compelling and just plain badass to watch when going through the motions. Blocking a 10 chain hit from a boss and then counterattacking with a big hit was so awesome an experience to play.

I would still recommend for those that gave this a wide berth to give it a shot. Try to exercise patience, and you'll likely find your inner ninja to tackle this extraordinary game.

100% GOTY from me.

Re: Talking Point: What Free January 2020 PS Plus Games Are You Dreaming Of?

Grindagger

@Arnna Yeah, i'm with you on that one. Having a 600mbps line, and getting download speeds of 10mbps is a bit of a joke.

UI infrastructure has always been something that's lacking on the Playstation side. It's probably the only thing that I think Sony truly fall short in. Hopefully Mark Cerny has made serious strides in ensuring the PS5 UI is actually decent this time round, and in turn upgraded their servers to be able to service a more palletable download speed since we're no longer using dial up modems....

Re: Talking Point: What Free January 2020 PS Plus Games Are You Dreaming Of?

Grindagger

@Deanvon01 Expecting a game in the top 10 every month. So, an average cost of £40-50 a month, every month. Does that seem reasonable when you're paying less than that for 12 months PSN Plus, at the cost of 1 premium title?

Not exactly reasonable that.

What would be more reasonable would be selective options for the customer. I.E Select to get 1 free game a year (premium) or 6 medium level games, or 12 mixed etc etc.

Re: Sekiro Wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019

Grindagger

It's an excellent choice, and to be honest the most innovative release of all the entrants. Yes, outer worlds is good, but it's basically Fallout, with a lot of the same tried and true formulas. That's not to say it wasn't a good game, but to get game of the year, you need to innovate and to make something that isn't out there anywhere else. Sekiro delivered. Whether you got on with it or not, is really not the point. The game stepped out of the zone, and went it's on path for style, and gameplay, and for those that did get on with it (i'll admit I was one of those people) it truly was a fantastic masterpiece if you have the patience, and the time to give to it.

Re: Xbox Series X Has a Share Button, Hellblade Sequel

Grindagger

Haha. This is like literally the worse thing microsoft could of announced with their new console.

"Hey guys, on our next gen console, we have a share button just like the PS4....which, well, is from the previous gen, but... we're catching up, y'know?"

Re: Death Stranding User Score Spikes as Metacritic Removes Over 6000 Negative Ratings

Grindagger

@BarefootBowser I'd still argue this games user score was heavily skewed by bandwagoners, more so than other exclusives, mainly due to the hype surrounding it.

Edit: I'm sure metacritic didn't just remove peoples scores without thought. In fact, looking on there, there are still a lot of negative scores, but with the low scores have come constructive criticism of how they came to the conclusion. I'm guessing the negative scores that were removed from metacritic were primarily from either just anger filled rants, or people bashing arbitrary points that weren't ancillary to the game itself.

Re: Death Stranding User Score Spikes as Metacritic Removes Over 6000 Negative Ratings

Grindagger

@BarefootBowser I get that. I really do. I'm not suggesting to silence peoples opinions.

But also, with due respect a lot of the heat the game is getting is from people jumping on the bandwagon (especially people who haven't even played the game).

Look, i'm not saying it's the best game ever released. I enjoyed it personally, and I also agree that there is a level of nicheness to this title, as it is not mainstream. But I still believe it is a good game in it's own right, with a lot of flaws.

What it tried to set out to do fell short, but in other areas it managed something revolutionary, which is make a game about delivering sh*t actually engaging, that in itself is a momumentally difficult task that almost no studio could pull off. Kojima may not have nailed it, but he did a damn good job of making it at least a reasonably enjoyable game.

Moving back to the subject in hand. I believe a large portion of the hate this game received is from people that haven't even given it the chance because the premise sounds boring.

Re: Death Stranding User Score Spikes as Metacritic Removes Over 6000 Negative Ratings

Grindagger

This game is extremely divisive.

I loved it, continued playing even after the story was finished. But most peoples gripe appears to be with just running around delivering things.

I get that this is definitely not for everyone, but the point is this doesn't make it a bad game per se, it just means it's not the right game for the person in question.

The problem with metacritic is peoples opinion of the game is from a subjective point of view, not an objective one. So they mark it down because it's not to their taste, as opposed to giving it the score it deserves for the game it is trying to be.

Re: Bluepoint's Mysterious PS5 Game Will Become Studio's Proudest Achievement

Grindagger

It's more or less confirmed as demon soul remaster.

There was a Playstation live event that took place a few months ago, and one of the live sony guys dropped a hint regarding the PS5 line up, and was something like "I can't mention what it is, but lets just say the soul still burns brightly with that one..."

I mean, that's pretty damn obvious.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy With Your PlayStation Plus Games for December 2019?

Grindagger

@VigorBird This was my thoughts exactly. Seems the commmunity here is more whiny than I thought. Especially from Sony fans, I thought this kind of bratty behaviour was below most of the community. Look, you can't have AAA blockbuster games every damn month, it's not realistic, or feasible for Sony to be doing this, and Titanfall (although quite old now) is still a fantastic game to get for free.

I appreciate some people may have already bought it, and I do feel that Playstation need to figure out a way for PS plus players who are not getting their monthly games for free because they already purchased them some sort of discount, or token instead so that the free game bonuses are completely wasted on them. Asides from that, anyone complaining is acting like a spoiled bratty child.

Re: PlayStation Store Hits New Low as PSN Avatar Sells for $99

Grindagger

@LowTech It's not a scam per se. But it is an attempt at trying to dupe people out of their money, by attempting to make the avatar a prestigious item.

If the item is 100 dollars, this will stop most sane people from purchasing it, or at least stop people who don't have more money than sense.

This is exclusively aimed at people who want to use the avatar as a status symbol on their account. A worthless billboard of pompous bragging rights (that ultimately noone but themselves will care about), and the creator of the avatar will likely be laughing all the way to the bank off the back of these chumps.

I mean, can't fault them for that, making a few bucks off the back of rich, spoiled individuals who are so insecure about themselves that they feel inclined to purchase an overpriced avatar just to make a statement to others about how wealthy they are, in a way it's ingenius, but ultimately to most intelligent people, completely and totally dumb.

Re: PS4 Is Now the Second Best Selling Home Console Ever

Grindagger

@Knuckles-Fajita To be fair it's not a good comparison. Handheld units are decidedly cheaper and therefore far far more accessible.

So they've rightly been separated. Ok, it's not sold as many, but if you were to chalk it up in value, rather than volume then it would destroy those consoles. And ultimately, success in regards to business is measured on the profit margin.

Re: Hands On: Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Live Up to RPG's Legendary Legacy

Grindagger

@Porco Check this article:

https://www.cnet.com/news/final-fantasy-7-remake-release-date-the-turks-and-everything-else-we-know/

"In another significant structural change from the original, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is to be segmented in at least two instalments. In 2015, producer Yoshinori Kitase said the game would be broken into "multiple" instalments, each of which will be the size of Final Fantasy 13. It appears those parts might be even bigger than that: Part one, releasing March 2, 2020, will span two Blu-ray discs, Kitase said at E3."

Kitase said at E3 that each game will be a full length Final Fantasy game. So, yeah...

Re: Feature: All PS2 Classics That Must Come to PS4

Grindagger

I know that we all have opinions on what exactly are "classic" games on the PS2, but a lot of these selections are purely subjective, and not based on popularity of what could objectively be called "classics".

I'm not saying that all the games listed there are under that bracket, but theres definitely a few games that I had never even seen, or heard of before (and PS2 was my jam, back when I had time to review and look into pretty much all and every game release back then).

Once again, I appreciate opinions are opinions, but as far as journalistic integrity goes, would be nice if you're going to label and use the word "classic" that we actually include classics, as in games that were hits and well received across the entire community, rather than a niche release.

Re: Talking Point: What if the PS5 Could Play Games from Every PlayStation Console?

Grindagger

More people want PS3 backwards compatibility than PS4?? WHUUUUT?

That completely took me by surprise. I have probably... No, I have definitely invested thousands of pounds on my digital PS4 collection. There is no way I'd choose PS3 compatibility, over PS4 compatibility.

In total seriousness, in this day and age where you're competing against the likes of Steam who will hold any game you buy, and any period, indefinitely, Sony more or less had to capitulate to backwards compatibility if they were serious about retaining customer base.

I'm not saying I wouldn't buy a PS5 if it didn't have PS4 compatibility, but it would seriously leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, that I would have to keep my old PS4 around just to play my legacy games.

It makes the most sense what they've done, from a business perspective, and to keep dedicated Sony fans happy.

Re: Death Stranding's File Size Will Eat Up a Fair Amount of Room on Your PS4

Grindagger

@Nightcrawler71 I'm from the UK, so not sure where you are. But a 2TB external hard drive you can get for around £50, which is the price of a video game these days.

If you can afford to get that many games, you're struggling with the space, you can afford a poxy £50 to get a hard drive expansion.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-PlayStation-STEA2000400/dp/B00TKFEE5S/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=2tb+external+hard+drive&qid=1571120858&sr=8-3

If you're after an internal 2TB hybrid, if you shop around you can still find one for around £60-£75. If you're looking to be even more frugal you can purchase a second hand repurposed one for a lot less.

Re: Death Stranding's File Size Will Eat Up a Fair Amount of Room on Your PS4

Grindagger

A little overdramatic.

I wouldn't say hard drive real estate is a premium today, particularly so if you're clued up on your PS4 and how you can increase capacity.

Personally, i have a 2TB SSD installed in my PS4, and I'm rarely in a position where I need to delete games I'm still playing, or invested in. Furthermore, I'd say I have games still on my harddrive that I don't really play, but are there just in case I fancy coming back to it.

I'd say that's a rather decent position to be in.

Now, to let me elaborate, before everyon kicks in with "I don't have that kind of money to invest in an SSD". You can pick up a regular 2TB hybrid for very little. And if space on your PS4 is becoming that much of an issue for you, then this kind of investment is a must.

On the other hand, if it doesn't bother you having to delete games on what feels like a constant conveyer belt cycle, then power to you as well.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on the PS5?

Grindagger

@tomassi I don't necessarily disagree with you. I mean they don't want to alienate customers, but I think we should also consider the fact that this new gen of consoles will most likely be a slow burner when it comes to transition.

As consoles get better and better, and the need for upgrades becomes less of a necessity, and more of luxury, I think it's likely there will be a slower transition over to the next generation. This will likely result in a longer shelf life overall for the PS4, giving Sony the time to really ramp up sales with entry level price, with a look to adjust this, as more people look to invest into next gen.

I guess we'll have to see. I did just read an article saying that Sony don't intend for the next gen release to be overly expensive, so you never know, it might be much more reasonable that it would first appear, although how they're saving on costs with so many high quality additions is quite a conundrum.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on the PS5?

Grindagger

@tomassi I'd be hugely surprised if it's under 600. Like hugely. Based on the fact it's going to have an SSD (Presumably at least 1TB) that's an enormous overhead cost just for that alone.

Unless they skrimp on the hardware, which wouldn't be a good idea. It's been made known that the "PS5" will be more akin to a PC and will be a lot more bells and whistles than previous, more bare bones approach has been with home consoles.

Personally, providing everything in the package is solid, an investment north of 600 buck/pounds/euros etc would be worth it for potentially up to 10 years life time worth of play.

Besides, you can get it on higher purchase/installments if you're hard up on the cash front, at least in the interim.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on the PS5?

Grindagger

Serious talk. This setup sounds very very promising, but it's early days yet, and I need to see what kind of infrastructure will be build it terms of the front end UI. They said it will be integrated somewhat with the PS4 environment, I hope that means with tweaks and adjustments that are glaringly bad with the PS4 front end at the moment.

In honesty, the PS4 front end is literally one of the only really bad things holding the console back, the shop is a real mess.

Outside of that, 8K support would be nice (although I'll have to buy a new damn TV).

How will we access our PS4 library, and how with multiplayer integration work with this. Will games released on PS4, need to be rebought on PS5 to access graphic updates if developers decide to implement them.

We need to discern these kind of questions before getting insanely hyped. However, having said that, I am pumped for the PS5, and so far, from whats been said, Sony are on track for again completely smashing the competition.
