Re: EA Suggests Its PS4 Games Can Be Upgraded to PS5 for Free

Grindagger

This is gold.

EA can see this as an opportunity to turn around their absolutely terrible image. Currently the worse in the industry, and voted worst company for several years in a row.

This is smart PR marketing, if they were to follow through.

In regards to this, it was a question I had from the very beginning. I believe if you own the game on PS4 you should get the enhanced version for PS5 for free, unless it's completely remade (as in from the ground up).

Re: Soapbox: Sony Needs to Share a PS5 Roadmap

Grindagger

Why is setting out the stall early a benefit. It didn't benefit Xbox in the previous generation, I fail to see how it will benefit them now.

Both approachs have equal pros and cons. Xbox came forward in the last gen with "only online" for the Xbox One, and got slated to hell. Along came PS4 and stole the show with "We're keeping gaming as per normal, no locked material", and boom, Xbox never recovered for a whole generation, certainly primarily due to that major blunder they took with them coming out of the gate early.

So, I fail to correlate how that means that Xbox are suddenly going to steal the show. If history has taught us anything, it's sometimes better to wait, and see what the other cards are, and then react as soon as possible when the hype is intense, and come out with a buster move that will steal all the attention, I fully imagine that is exactly what Sony are intending to do.

Re: DOOM Developer Ditches Composer Amid Public Spat

Grindagger

Personal attacks on anyone over the fact you're upset about the quality of a product is wholly unacceptable.

Having said that, I still understand why people would be upset at the negligence given to a titles OST, especially if you're an audiophile, or an avid listener of video game music.

If the tracks on FFVII remake had been heavily compressed and made to sound like dog turd I would probably have been upset as well, and voiced my opinion on it to square enix.

There is one thing voicing your disdain and upset about a substandard effort being made by a company, and pointing it out so that the company is aware they need to do better, and threatening employees of the company in a witch hunt manner, which is absolutely despicable. Some people just can't control their anger.

Re: PS Plus Members Launch Petition Against 'Dumbfounding' May 2020 PS4 Games

Grindagger

@RALPHY88 I don't necessarily disagree with you, but there are definitely costs involved with providing online services to nearly 40 million subscribers.

I'm not saying they don't profiteer hugely off the back of it, but it's a service nonetheless.

Anyway, my point isn't whether sony do or don't make money from it, it's that the service is primarily provided to serve online capabilities for the user, that's it's primary objective. The monthly games are literally a secondary ancillary benefit, aimed to keep you subscribed to the service who might be waining on using online.

People like ol' Johnny here who are supposedly trying to utilize the service here as a free games mechanic still would come out massively on top, since paying £50 a year, when you're getting an average of at least 2 games a month supersedes the cost by an absolute mile, even if you only got 2 triple A titles a year, nevermind 3,4 or even 5 + the myriad of indie titles you get along with it.

There's literally no value lost here, except for entitled morons who think they're getting a hard deal.

Re: Talking Point: Could PS5's Price Be a Problem Against Xbox's Rumoured Lockhart?

Grindagger

@crimsontadpoles Yes, and No...

Whilst it's great in premise, depends on developer support, and how this is handled code side. If it's something the developers have to spendtime tinkering with, could end up a complete mess.

PS4 Pro games are largely designed with the pro in mind, and often the PS4 varieties of the game are left with a hugely disadvantaged and limited version, due to poor scaling, and translations.

Will have to wait and see what Microsoft have up their sleeve, could be some ingenuius process they've created for the differential between the two systems.

Equally though, since both console generations are to be supported for the forseeable future, makes this purchase fairly arbitrary unless you're after specifically front end UI adjustments and a flashy new piece of hardware, which to be honest wouldn't be the demographic you'd be after.

Re: PS Plus Members Launch Petition Against 'Dumbfounding' May 2020 PS4 Games

Grindagger

@Lawlking This comment is asinine.

I mean, come on, you're comparing historical injustices with PS plus game selections. Talk about absurd comparisons.

It's one thing to have an opinion, I.E "I'm not a fan of this months selections, would be cool if Sony could maybe make X adjustment to make PS Plus more exciting for it's customer base" and "WAAAAAH WAAAAAH I WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT, I DEMAND SOMETHING DIFFERENT, RIGHT NOW!"

There's nothing pretentious about pointing out people entitlement issues. It's the tone thats taken, not the opinion that something is good or bad.

If you're having to make a petition an sign it just because you feel that the games that were selected for the month, that are FREE, weren't up to your personal level of standard, then might be worth reconsidering your life priorities. Seriously.

PS Plus is, and always will be primarily a payment for using online services, and to pay towards upkeep of that, and of course for sony to make a percentage profit on mark up.

16,000 signatures says all you need to know, when there are nearly 40 million subscribers. And that's that most people aren't whiny crybabies.

Re: PS Plus Members Launch Petition Against 'Dumbfounding' May 2020 PS4 Games

Grindagger

@ZenMex Nice attempt, but your arguments just aren't stacking up.

Yes, Sony is worth multi millions, it also has rich stakeholders who paid to have huge percentages of the business. You might not like it, but this is capitalism 101. I'm not saying that corporate greed isn't a thing, but unfortunately that's one of the prices we pay for the freedom of a capitalist nation. Got to roll with the punches.

Businesses are going to make money, that's what they're there for, bottom line.

In regards to making the games better, they have to ebb and flow that stuff, we've had some absolute bangers released in parts of the year. Realistically, this just can't be maintained, month in, month out, it's just not sustainable. Now, i get that when you remove the context, and just think of it in a "well I don't like it" way, then sure, but if you think about it, it's the only way to make free game give aways sustainable throughout the year, without cutting deeply into profit margins. Most of these releases will be based on sales figures of whats doing well, and what can be released en mass for free, and in the process mostly kill the revenue stream.

Lastly, and probably your best (but ultimately flawed point). Why was it free at the start of PS3. The answer to this is two fold. Early in the PS3's life cycle they were fighting hard to try and beat the Xbox 360 who at the time were charging for their live service. In order to build the PS3 customer base which at the time was flagging due to the poorly hardcoded piece of hardware that the PS3 was, they decided as a business decision to make it free in order to get people to jump ship.

As PS3 gathered steam, and it was clear that live services required more resource to maintain, equally Sony were aware that Xbox were charging for their live service so Sony switched it's process to inline with the rest of the market.

For your information PS Plus was around for ages during PS3 era, it was only made mandatory when they realized not enough people were upgrading to PS+ and the costs were likely to much to shoulder without making it mandatory.

If you want the full explanation, a translation of a Famitsu interview can be found here, where studio boss (at the time) Shuhei Yoshida explains why PS Plus was made mandatory: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-explains-why-ps-plus-is-required-for-ps4-online-play/1100-6410806/

Re: PS Plus Members Launch Petition Against 'Dumbfounding' May 2020 PS4 Games

Grindagger

@ZenMex With all due respect, you don't take into account a lot of the costs involved with online gaming. There are servers that need to be upkept across multiple games. You may be blithely unaware of this, which is quite normal, because you don't work on network adminstration, but believe me these costs exist, and they're not cheap.

Of course, secondly, this is a business, and a business is here to make profit. So when you take both of these into account, you have to appreciate, and respect that the money you pay to Sony is primarily to support online play, and ensure servers are continued to be maintained, network connectivity is constantly being reviewed and adjusted to account to fluctuating numbers, as well as Sony making a healthy profit off the services they supply to consumers.

This pandemic being a good example, Sony would of had to make various adjustments to their infrastructure, just so you can continue to consume your online gaming, which you think should be something you have for free.

Try to keep this in mind, BEFORE you start your whining and complaining.

Re: PS Plus Members Launch Petition Against 'Dumbfounding' May 2020 PS4 Games

Grindagger

@Johnny89 You're clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed if you can't even understand that the money you pay for PS Plus is for being able to play online.

The games offered each month are a free incentive to keep you subbed. Don't like it? You can unsubscribe, but then you'd be losing what you presumably subscribed to in the first place, which is playing online, you know....the important bit.

Re: There Are Only Five PS4 Games Available to Pre-Order from the PS Store

Grindagger

FYI, i can't see how you think this is the generation winding down? It's more to do with the uncertainty of release dates due to the coronavirus, I would of thought that was obvious?

It's even been stated from numerous sources that PS4 will be supported for significant time to come, with a lot of the next gen titles being release for both platforms.

Re: A Whopping 10,000 PlayStation Games Now Support Trophies

Grindagger

@Saro I actually believe the US implemented a system similar to what you stated. It was never rolled out to Europe, and I'm not sure it's still active in the US now.

Anyway, to answer your question, some people (well, at least speaking for myself) enjoy chasing trophies as a way to enhance the game, and to experience the most challenging aspects of the game.

Some games fall short of the mark when making platinums and they end up being cumbersome, time wasters. Personally, I tend to avoid those games, and rarely bother finishing them for the platinum. But if the trophies involve being games at harder difficulties, I enjoy earning those trophies as a way to enhance my gaming experience, and to do content I might not have normally pushed myself to do.

Re: A Whopping 10,000 PlayStation Games Now Support Trophies

Grindagger

5 year old account, 34 platinums to my name, and just north of 3,000 trophies. Level 19. I'd be higher if I hadn't been a PC gamer for most of my teens and 20's.

Platinums I'm proud of: Sekiro (Enough said) / UFC 2 (That training trophy i remember being a major pain) and probably Monster Hunter World for the sheer determination to get all those gold trophys for the big and small sizes.

Re: PS5 Game Reveals Imminent As OPM Teases Blowout

Grindagger

@Grimwood Don't agree with your views at all that next gen won't look a lot better.

Firstly, this is hugely subjective. My girlfriend at the time when I first got PS4 noted something along the lines of "It looks exactly the same as the PS3 in terms of looks".

It's clearly not.

My point is that, there will be various graphical updates, in terms of better handling of POV when screen turning, anti aliasing, reduction of distance fog to give much more spectacular views for open world games, less screen tearing, high FPS 4k gaming, potential for 8k gaming, graphical fidelity, detailed foliage, detailed facial expressions and motion graphics. More complex physics.

The list is endless. The questions here is more likely, does this interest you? Based on your response, probably not, but you'd be ignorant to think this applies to everyone else.

And also, I can guarantee you we will get stuff better than TLOU2 and Ghost Of Tsushima. If i had a dollar for every person who said "This has to be the pinnacle of gaming graphics", only for another game to come along and one up the last game. Horizon Zero Dawn was that pinnacle on console, until the likes of Ghost Of Tsushima, TLOU2 and Cyperpunk 2020 came along. There is always something better on the horizon that keeps breaking records.

Re: SnowRunner - Glacial Haulage Sim Is Snow Joke

Grindagger

Mudrunner is great if you like physics, and working out how to traverse tricky landscape in an efficient manner.

If you have a friend to play with the enjoyment factor becomes a lot better as you work together to tackle deep rivers, steep terrain and all the while maintain balance of your haul without it becoming overturned. Using pulleys and a basic grasp of physics makes overcoming some of these hardships quite rewarding.

But like some people have said, it's definitely an acquired taste, and if you're the sort that wants instant action I'd stay away.

Re: Sony Battling The Last of Us 2 Spoiler Videos As Major Plot Points Leak Online

Grindagger

What I find particularly piquant about the whole treatment of employees and postponements argument is that you can't have your cake and eat it.

So many people are upset about games being postponed, if there wasn't crunch periods where people are worked insane hours (and I've done them, they're soul crushing) then triple A titles would never hit release dates, or would take a hell of a lot longer to develop.

Due to the complexities of video games, putting the jigsaw puzzle pieces together when you have potentially tens of milllions of lines of code involes a tremendous amount of collaboration, communication and dedication, and sadly, pressure in order for games to hit their targeted dates.

Either be an advocate for people to be treated well, and accept that game delays will take place, and also take a lot longer to be completed. Or don't get involved in the conversation, because you can't have it both ways.

Re: Sony Battling The Last of Us 2 Spoiler Videos As Major Plot Points Leak Online

Grindagger

@Rob_230 Having worked in the industry for 8 years believe me when I say whoever leaked this almost certainly took all preventative measures to protect their identity.

Every company has different terms for their NDAs so, it's not always clear. For some it's simply dismissal without pay. For others it's a court case with substantial damages by way of fines, or even community service and potential prison time.

Either way, it's unlikely they'll find who it is. I'm sure they'll have an idea, but they'll find no proof if this was a preconceived notion by the individual in question.

Re: Sony Battling The Last of Us 2 Spoiler Videos As Major Plot Points Leak Online

Grindagger

@Jomac3db What's with the entitlement?

You talk as though people are somehow entitled to someone elses hard work? I get that people are disappointed with this being delayed, but these big companies are run by stakeholders, and those people hold all the cards.

This won't make the game come forward, because the decision isn't made by the actual people making the game, it's made by the bigwig stakeholders who decide whats financially the best route to take to maximize profits.

So, people aren't getting back at anyone, because it's still going to sell a ton of units when it's released. All this does is hurt the fanbase.

Re: Sony Battling The Last of Us 2 Spoiler Videos As Major Plot Points Leak Online

Grindagger

@Rob_230 Yes, they are idiots, but also it's a known fact that the population of the world is not made up of people who are angels.

Employ a level of caution when reading any articles involving/or is likely to involve spoilers and you won't run into them.

Push Square are doing what they should do which is report on it, but unfortunately it has the double sided effect that ultimately it's likely a few people will take this opportunity to use this article to spoil the game for those who are most interested in this game.

In summary, if you want to play it safe. Read the article and click away. Reading any comments is almost certainly a risk.

Re: Sony Battling The Last of Us 2 Spoiler Videos As Major Plot Points Leak Online

Grindagger

I mean, i feel bad that years of work from the development team has been leaked.

But there's always a certain amount of pretentious overexageration about the impact of this. It's really a quite simple fact of "don't watch the spoilers" if it's not what you want. Equally, don't go looking around for them, and almost certainly you won't find them. Nothing that a little bit of common sense doesn't fix.

Re: PS5 Heatsink Patent Has the Web Hyped About Sony's Next-Gen Cooling Solution

Grindagger

@FullbringIchigo Not sure if you're referencing the PS4 Pro or not. But I have a Pro, have done since it came out.

And the fan on that is ridiculous. When playing intensive graphical games like God Or War, or Horizon it literally sounds like the console may take off and fly away!

My Slim (which i have at my girlfriends house) however is another story, it rarely makes much noise. Or maybe it's i'm so used to my PS4 Pro that I don't notice it as much.

Seriously, i can't overestimate just how loud the pro is, I have to turn the TV volume up to a reasonably high level to a drone out the fan going ham.

Re: Battlefield V Wraps Up Post-Launch Support This Summer

Grindagger

Any developer that tells their consumer base "Either buy it, or don't. I'm fine with either" doesn't altogether have the companies financial interests at heart.

Whilst it might not of been a complete disaster sales wise, it was significantly lower than was expected, when compared against Battlefield I and the growth calculation that the big wigs would of initially projected.

Moral of the story: If you're a developer it's normally not a good idea to get caught in the middle of two sides warring over their opinions on a controversial point. Whatever your stance on the subject is, business is still business, and this is a good example of how to destroy your own company if you want to be a moral arbiter. You can't have it both ways.

Re: Poll: Do You Like the Final Fantasy VII Remake Ending?

Grindagger

This is a great example of some people not accepting change.

It's ok for things to change, you will always have the original. Peoples desperation to want to hold onto their nostalgia so strongly they gatekeep it as if the game, and its premise belongs to them, and them alone.

I'm excited about experiencing a different story for Cloud and Co. This infatuation with wanting to replay the game with the exact same story is baffling. We already know whats going to happen, now, with the remake there is a air of uncertainty, and it's got most people buzzing, because it generates excitement.

Re: Soapbox: I Want Better Levels on PS5, Not Bigger Worlds

Grindagger

For me this is highly contextualized.

Some games would definitely have done better with good level design, whilst other games require a bigger world.

No one right now is saying "No" to a bigger Elder Scrolls World, or "No" to a biggest GTA world, or any upcoming MMORPG. In this instances, those games literally rely on world size being one of the defining factors of the overarching experience.

It's the inbetween games that don't know if they're world based, or level based where they get a bit convoluted.

A good example would be breakpoint, which is a spiralling story based game, loads of narrative, and a huge world where most of the missions in my opinion are reasonably boring.

Re: Trials of Mana - The Delightful Return of a Classic Action RPG

Grindagger

I'm so on the fence about buying this.

On one hand i'm looking for a decent JRPG to get my teeth into, I find often most of them are lacklustre or very limiting in regards to storytelling.

I like the old school games, so this is appealing, but I'm not so sure I'm keen on the limited repeat formula, doesn't sound very engaging. More, rinse and repeat until the game is finished.

Its one of those games I suppose I won't really know unless i buy it, but £45 is quite steep for a game that could really go either way. I didn't mind secret of mana, even though I didn't own a SNES when I was a kid (megadrive/genesis SEGA kid) a lot of my friends say it was one of the best JRPGs on the system.

To me, it was just ok.... Kind of like a limiting "Zelda: A Link To The Past" ....

Re: UK Sales Charts: Call of Duty Kicks Final Fantasy VII Remake Off the Podium

Grindagger

@naruball Financially, couldn't agree with you more. All it really shows though, is that the gaming market is overblown when it comes to actual popularity.

Like I said, people buy these games, but rarely play them. I know some of my colleagues at work being excellent examples. They all talk about it when the latest COD or FIFA comes out, they're super excited, they they rush out and grab it when it's launched, along with a console if necessary, play it for 10 days, then their console gathers dust for a whole year, till th next version is released.

Whilst i respect this is what moves units, and keeps the company financially stable, it doesn't do much for the actual gaming community as a whole.

Re: UK Sales Charts: Call of Duty Kicks Final Fantasy VII Remake Off the Podium

Grindagger

This never ceases to depress me.

It's upsetting that some quality titles don't stand up against the same old Call Of Duty and FIFA games.

Those titles pretty much represent everything I avoid in gaming. I get that football is popular in the UK, and that also COD is the go to version of a shooter game, but it's also representative of the large proportion of people who don't really game, or typically have a PS4 with either one of these games (or both installed) and literally nothing else.

It doesn't represent gaming at all, just because it's appeals to the biggest demographic, as I would never consider probably at least 70-80% of these players gamers (I'm likely sure they wouldn't either)

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake Moves 3.5 Million Copies in Three Days, Is One of PS4's Fastest Selling Exclusives

Grindagger

Good on them, also I'm glad it's well received because it guarantees this games completion in regards to the episodic outlay.

The one concern I had was that this wouldn't be seen through, or that we'd be waiting years between episodes. Here's hoping the financial success of this title spurs the company forward, and with gusto to complete the future installments.
