@DrJoeystein excellent write up, I'm glad to see a lot of people giving this game its due. I loved the game, but I was a bit worried that most people wouldn't, that the world might have moved on and I was just stuck in the past. I'm so glad this isn't the case, and I hope that means we get a lot more shooters like this. Now then, for a true sequel to Duke Nukem 3D
I've said it before and I'll say it again, platinumed this over the weekend and it's hands down the most fun I've had in a long while. The multiplayer might be lacking a bit, but the campaign is a pure gem, shooters like this do not exist anymore, period. And I'm already seeing some incredible stuff on SnapMap, less than a week from release. A truly special game.
I'm about halfway through and I'm loving every minute. Even though I was disappointed with the MP alphas/betas, the campaign is something special. And apart from the great gameplay, the biggest surprise for me is that the level design emphasises exploration, something that all shooters have abandoned. Even the good shooters, even the great ones, rely on point a to point b progression. FPS games started with maze-like levels, that required exploration to find keys, secret rooms, and backtrack a lot until you move on to the next level. Doom brings that all back, and that makes me extremely happy. The levels I've seen so far are getting better and better.
And you should really keep an eye on SnapMap. The degree you can customise anything, from designing a level, all the way to behaviour and logic settings for enemies, game types etc is mind blowing. This is the Mario Maker of FPS games imo, and if it catches on, we'll see some incredible stuff. Worth noting is that SnapMap was the last thing John Carmack was working on before he left id, and that man's a genius.
I still think the standard MP is not that great, but SnapMap could actually fix that, people might end up creating a better MP anyway.
@get2sammyb Just curious, why did the supernatural stuff feel out of place for you? Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider and a lot of games/films of that ilk have a supernatural element to them.
Personally, I missed it as well, I would have loved undead pirates, but then again, the game was incredible regardless, so by the end I didn't care that much.
I've seen this argument a lot though, and that's perfectly fine obviously, but it always seemed a bit weird that people don't mind supernatural elements in Indy, which clearly inspired Uncharted, but complain about it in these games.
@Neurotic_Biotic Sorry, that was the PSN price I was talking about. 42 is a bit more reasonable I guess, but I still feel like we should have the option to buy the base game. It kinda feels like releasing only a collector's /premium edition of the game, and the base game being exclusive to a platform.
@AyanamiReign @Boerewors it doesn't have to be free to play. PC players can buy a $40 version, and we can only get the $60 one, with the only extra thing being a bunch of skins, which I don't really care about. Here in the UK it's even more ludicrous, £30 for the base edition on PC, £45 for the Origins edition on PC, £55 for the Origins edition on PS4. It's almost twice the price.
That's my problem, this is a £30/$40 game, and we don't even have the option to buy it at that, with no explanation why. I wish more people would point that out, it's really unfair to console players.
I was living in a different country, studying for a degree that I was slowly losing interest in and never finished. In these 10 years, I moved across Europe, got into a new course, and graduated, spent a few years in a horrible customer service job, and for the past two years I've been working in my field in an amazing environment alongside people I never dreamed I'd ever meet.
Most importantly, I met a lovely young lady, who almost exactly a year ago, became my wife.
My personal issue with an episodic release, is that by the time the next episode rolls out, I've moved on to the next thing. Just the thought of trying to remember what the story was, who is everyone and re-acclimatising myself with the control scheme, puts me off diving back in. The controls are not much of an issue with telltale style games, but with something like hitman, assassin's creed, or anything with slightly deeper systems, I just don't know if I'd bother. And that is the main reason I haven't gotten the new Hitman, even though I thought the beta was really good.
I get that not everyone is like me though, and if companies want to release games like that, I'm all for it, it doesn't affect me in the least. Most of the time though, I will wait for the full game to be released.
That's perfect if that's true, we get a change of setting and we get to keep Kratos, can't imagine GoW without him personally, and can't get enough of his angry shouting.
As to how it makes sense, it seems pretty straightforward to me. He killed all the olympians, now he's gonna kill all the Norse ones. Simples
EDIT: Also, I'm totally digging the beard if that's the new look
-Hey, you know what will be fun? -What? -If we make them attack with circle, and dodge with square! -Lolz!
Seriously though, decent enough demo, although controls feel a bit stiff, combat doesn't flow great and frame rate is a bit of a dump fest. Very intrigued with the world/setting, just hope it will get a good level of polish before final release.
@Gamer83 Different developers. North does gta, San Diego does red dead. There is some overlap, but both titles should be in development at the same time.
They need almost 2 months for manufacturing? How many copies are they making? Fallout 4 went gold 2 or 3 weeks before it hit shelves, and that was a huge release. Just seems a bit weird.
I am racing through Shinovi atm, trying to finish it before this arrives, and I underestimated how long it is! I'm at 30 odd hours and I've only just started the last "school" storyline. Really impressed though, I wanted to check it out with all the controversy etc and I'm totally addicted to the gameplay loop.
Eh, last gen I would have cared more, but I know literally no one that owns an Xbox One. As in, real life friends, everyone I'm aware of has gone for a PS4 this time round.
Heads up all, they keep coming in and out, if you're still interested, keep refreshing and trying to add to basket, I got one about five minutes ago. I imagine it's people adding to basket and not going through with it.
Hey all, can someone that used amazon confirm whether they charge you now or on dispatch? I know it's usually dispatch, but the option on their website is "buy now" instead of "pre-order", which makes me a bit suspicious.
@KratosMD Yeah, I hope so anyway! Theoretically you could simulate a cinema sized screen, and couple that with some good headphones, that does sound incredible. Let's hope that's what it will end up being.
I'm most likely in. I'd like to try it first somewhere, and see what games will be out at launch (50 in the first few months btw!), but at that pricepoint I won't need much convincing
Hori is great, if you've never had a stick and want to have a shot, check out the Hori mini fightstick 4. It gets a lot of flak from pros cause it's missing the highest quality parts and it's not moddable, but it feels really good, especially if you're a beginner, and it's in the £30-40 price range. That teensy team probably hasn't slept in years making this game, considering the scope and difficulties they've ran into, like that flood. If it's as good as the hype suggest, then more power to them, they've got my money.
Personally, I still have no issue with the games on offer, considering the price of PS+. Can't really complain for £40 for 72 games, it's the way I see it anyway.
However, it is weird to me how they haven't given any of the perceived triple a games in a long while (on ps4), even just for appeasing the masses. It baffles me how sometimes Sony seems to be really close to their audience, and then in this case, it feels like they've never been on the internet in two years. It used to be that you got xbox live because you had to (online multiplayer) and ps+ because you wanted to (free games), but that is changing for a lot of people and Sony doesn't seem to care really. Sure, you still need xbox live to play online, but they've gone from not giving anything else, to some bad/old games, to some pretty damn meaty games. They've got Sherlock Holmes, Lords of the Fallen and Borderlands this month. Just, are they not seeing that that makes them look worse? (EDIT: I mean Sony in this last sentence)
Maybe they're planning to put Knack on plus and they're like, "what mediocre game is the community gonna be buggering us about after that? We better have a sequel ready!".
@get2sammyb wow, what's even more surprising is even last year's cod sold more than Batman! Seems crazy to me, Batman was everywhere around that time of year.
I wouldn't describe 2019 as early, that's the most expected timeframe. Most generations have been shorter than that, and only a few have been just a bit over that. PS3 in Europe was just over six years, and that's considered a long gen. I could even see it at 2018 to be honest.
I don't know man, and I can't say until I try it. Before the vita came out, Sony hired spaces in many major cities across the UK and let you just walk in and have a shot at it. They really need to do the same with PSVR, even more so than the vita since it's something you need to experience. If it's something that blows my mind away, and there's good support for it, then yeah, I would even consider buying it at £400-500. But not until I get hands on with it. £300-350 should be the sweet spot though.
@get2sammyb got it on the sale and been playing most of the day. Definitely worth it for me, although it's not that scary. Creepy atmosphere, but not if you're looking for jump scares. The story is very interesting though, deals with similar themes as The Talos Principle, albeit in a more grounded way.
Unless this is a Fallout type showing (here's the first gameplay, it's out in four months) I'm still worried whether it's gonna make 2016. If it is though, this is gonna be another crazy year, combined with Horizon, FFXV, Mirror's edge etc. 2015 pt2
Palmer Luckey had said this was going to be premium priced, but I'm not sure what to think about this. On one hand, ok, yes that's a lot of money. But my knowledge is very limited regarding how much the tech costs that's in there, R&D costs, and frankly, the quality tradeoff you could have with a 100-200 bucks cheaper version. We're gonna have to wait and see, PSVR is almost certainly going to be cheaper, but there is a chance that it might not be good enough because of that.
Also, let's not forget business applications for this, unlike PSVR, this isn't strictly a gaming device, and while $600/£500 might seem like a lot for a consumer, it's not as much for a big company/professional (say, architects or mechanics, which VR could be extremely useful in visualising their work). So I can't tell if that tag will ruin the sales potential for it, it's still an unknown field.
Personally, I definitely don't own any pc that could handle the Rift at this stage, and even if I did, I'd want to wait or try it somewhere before commiting that amount of cash.
What amazes me is that they're choosing to skip a year, the one year the film is coming out. You'd think that's the one year they'd definitely want some assassin's creed game out. But oh well, I'm actually really looking forward to watch dogs 2, it could be the AC2 of that series, meaning the first did all the groundwork and the second one will just perfect most rough aspects of it.
@mrobinson91 I'm with you, it's the perfect example of "jack of all trades, master of none". I've put about 30 hours in, and as much as I want to finish it, I need to park it for a while. I spent 2 hours today, 2 bloody hours, scrounging for oil, or spring or some other stuff. It wasn't even optional, I don't care much for all the building side of it, but you had to do it to progress a minutemen mission. Got really annoyed and put it aside.
It's a good game, but the craftsmanship that has gone into games like metal gear, or bloodborne, or the witcher, is nowhere to be seen here. Everything feels half-baked, even if there is a million different stuff about.
Aren't we confusing best developer with best publisher though? For me, best developer would be the company that released a game that performed great from the get go. The Witcher is a great game, and it's good that CDPR patched the game quickly multiple times, and that's certainly to their credit. I do feel though that Kojima Productions did a far superior job of not needing to patch the game as much, cause it was simply running almost perfectly, at 60FPS, open world etc. (Yes, there was that mission 29 thing, but not much else really). The Witcher still can't sustain a stable frame rate after a ton of patches.
Yes, you can argue dlc policies, microtransactions and season passes, but to me that's decisions on the publisher side, no need for the developer to take the hit. I repeat, I really liked the Witcher, and CDPR are a great company, but strictly as a developer, Kojima Productions takes the crown for me.

Re: Feature: Why The Witcher 3's CD Projekt Red Is the Best Developer of 2015
Aren't we confusing best developer with best publisher though?
