It's about time that we got some semi-decent Final Fantasy XV info, so we're glad that the official forums have thrown out some fresh details. As it turns out, the upcoming role-playing game won't have difficulty settings. Instead, the title's battle system will feature different gameplay modes that you can switch between depending on your preference.
"By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style," a statement from lead game designer Takizawa Masashi reads. Apparently, these modes have been incorporated based on feedback from those who played Episode Duscae.
Square Enix promises that more information is on its way as we get closer to the game's release date announcement, so we'll no doubt be seeing and hearing more of Noctis and the gang in the coming weeks. Do these battle modes sound like a good idea to you? Swap to your favourite weapon type in the comments section below.

I haven't been paying attention to the battle system, assuming it would just be the now standard FFXIII real time action engine. Can somebody please fill me in?
It does worry me when they say 2 modes though, unless it's just like the older FF games where there was a choice between real time and turn based, though I don't recall the actual names. If it's too big of a difference I'd worry that they would both be broken.
@rjejr The demo was more like The Witcher or something in terms of combat, or perhaps Kingdom Hearts? Still I am keeping the faith with this game, the directors seem to be taking criticism on board so I reckon it's in safe enough hands.
@rjejr
I can see this being one of those "trying to please everyone but failing miserably to cater to anyone" if handled wrong.
I dont care about this one but I know you do so I hope they nail it. I am currently playing thru VI now. Gotta grind a lot more I see.
I'm curious as to what thy mean by that statement. I hope we find out more really soon.
If it's anything like dragon age inquisition, then that's great.
@DrClayman spamming the attack button and a useless tactical camera? yay!
@sinalefa I played and still own the first 6 on disc but not sure if I made it thru more than 1 of them, always got stuck someplace, sometimes near the beginning, sometimes near the end. And one at the wall, which was apparently famous for being difficult.
I will play this one, and i hope that it will be good. It just has to be better than X-2 and XIII (didn't even bother w/ 2 and 3) so the low bar has already been established. And FF:CC:TCB on Wii is one of the worst JRPG I've ever played. So FFXV will be good, I just know it.
Oh, I hear you'll be waiting awhile for Scalebound, not sure if I've expressed my sympathies on that one. Seems like this entire hardware generation is built on delays, doesn't it? Guess we'll see how NX fairs.
Good, because I wasn't overly fond of the hold square until everyone is dead battle system in the demo. Though I don't really see how they can make all of these battle systems work to any decent standard without some comprises to bosses in particular. Hopefully I'll be wrong as the game looks to have great potential
I never played the demo, and as a huge FF fan, I actually took this one off my want list, as I do not want a FF themed hack n slash. Hopefully this means that they will have more tactical combat that doesn't involve mashing the attack button. Ill stay tuned, and maybe add it back to my wish list.
I'm hoping that there is a turn-based, just because I prefer a thinkers game as opposed to a reflex game, but something tells me that it would essentially be an "easy mode".
@rjejr I wish it was FFXIII's combat system. That game got the BS extremely right - shame there wasn't ANYTHING else to do but combat.
@rjejr
Guess X is the way to go. Havent even touched it though. Jax wants to kill me for that, he is utterly hooked.
About Scalebound, since I dont have a X1 then they can delay it as much as they want. Thanks though.
@Jayvir This is the big issue for me - its not devil may cry or ninja gaiden its final fantasy, turn based is fine.
@rjejr when did 13s battle system become the standard? Although that would be a preferable option as Paradigm shifting is a million times more fun than the fighting in the ff15 demo; no skill involved.
@rjejr
The combat was ok in the demo. Just that. 'ok'. It wasn't fun, but it was serviceable. If all I had to go with was the gameplay, I would probably pass on this. But I'm going to wait to see a few more trailers before making up my mind. Personally, my favorite combat system was XIII.
btw, very few of the FF games have ever had difficulty settings, so i don't think the different combat systems will change the overall difficulty of the game by much. It will probably be based off of preference and that's all.
(o_O )
So we will get a freestyle, ATB, and turn based? That's pretty awesome and I am pretty sure it was fairly easy to implement a turn based system, my favorite for final fantasy ever since playing the original ALL those years ago on the NES.
I wouldn't hold my breath, most likely it's going to be something silly like in Dissidia where you had the option to have a more "traditional" RPG style too, and all it basically was, was the AI controlling the character and you giving orders to them. It was quite bad.
Streamlined hack 'n' slash.
Bring back the gambit system from XII I say.
@ApostateMage Gambits like 12, with Paradigm shifts from 13 to swap through your setups, levelling like ff10 Hard board, in a region similar to ff9, with a rivalry like squall and seifer from ff8, as part of a rebellion from ff7 in an effort to stop a crazy overlord from ff6.
Who am I kidding FF15 is going to be a broken mess with none of those things.
@SonyInfinity Nah, it's worded poorly really - I don't think there's any chance of us getting anything remotely turn based. I think what we'll get is something like an 'action' mode where you'll be able to mix you attacks up with button presses (like in a standard action RPG) and a more tactical mode where you'll use quick menus to select your attacks. Essentially the same system, but with different input methods.
I mean, we could be a more slow paced system maybe, but I don't know how they could balance the game around two reasonably different styles. We'll see soon anyway.
@Utena-mobile "btw, very few of the FF games have ever had difficulty settings"
I just recall around 7, 8 or 9 that you had 1 option in settings where you forced the bad guys to wait their turn. I always played on that setting b/c I've always played the FF games for the story, not the challenge.
Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast is still my favorite JRPG fighting system, I really enjoyed being able to cancel an opponents attack just before their turn. And where you were on the field of battle mattered. And getting sneakers made you so fast you could cancel almost any attack. Grandia 1 and 3 had similar systems but 2 was still my favorite. And the original Kingdom Hearts, which was probably the same in 2, but it was very new to me in 1 for a JRPG. Decent partner AI as well.
So I am open to a lot of different ways to play a JRPG, just as long as it works as it should.
@sinalefa Jax is around level 50 in XCX, so he's certainly played it alot. I think he only knows how to play games 1 way though, all in. I'm about 30 hours in, level 20, I think I may have another 200 hours to go, I like sightseeing. And wandering aimlessly. Is that redundant? And despite TW's best recommendation I'm still trying to avoid all guides even though I own the official hardcover one. I did watch the Youtube survival guide part for online, it didn't help much though. So what are you playing these days?
@themcnoisy I may been a bit overly broad on that, what I emant was a more acton based approach found in 13 then th emenu driven approach found in earlier games. Though I didn' tplay 11 b/c it was online, an dI can' trecall 12 all that well. I knwo 10 they were all still standing in line taking turns, Wakka throwing his volleyball at birds heads. So not 13 per se, but running around fighting action based as opposed to standing in a line taking turns. Which in my head really started w/ Kingdom Hearts, but that was almost all button mashing hitting w/ the key, not a lot of variety.
Whatever they do for this game, I never want my party standing in a straight line ever again. Not even in the FFVII remake, I want running around action.
@rjejr
I am addicted to the Hatsune Miku game on 3ds and I am also playing Shadow of Mordor for my bro to watch. Plus FFVI and Mighty Switch Force 2. And the perennial co op on Uncharted 3.
@DrClayman my thoughts exactly, I really enjoyed switching up the combat in DA Inquisition
They're trying to appeal to people like myself who don't give a damn for Final Fantasy in large part because I grew tired of turn based battle systems. The problem is they're doing this while sticking the middle finger up at the loyal fanbase, the people who have tried to stick with the series despite how crappy it has become (even as somebody who wasn't a big fan after VI, I could respect how well made VII-X were). Really at this point, SE needs to give up. The only good games with the SE label these days are from the Western studios acquired in the Eidos deal and they're even busy f'ing up the reception for those games with stupid sh*t like timed-exclusive deals and trying to make you 'Augment your pre-order.'
i actually liked the battle system in Episode Duscae
Hopefully it's been added because of the work on the FFVII remake, and that it allows you to switch between the battle system in the Episode Duscae demo and old-style turn based system.
@sinalefa Uncharted 3? Is that the multiplayer they dropped on the PS4 version, or was that U2? Shadow of Mordor is way down my future playlist somewhere. Don't know much about those other games.
Dragon age inquisition wasn't a good game
@rjejr
They dropped the mp on both 2 and 3. The latter has splitscreen in addition to online and that's what we play.
Hatsune Miku is a cute Japanese style music game with very catchy tunes (my personal 3ds 2015 GOTY) and Switch Force 2 is an indie game on 3ds later ported to Wii U. Made by Wayforward, the Shantae guys.
P.S. please congratulate your son on his bday tomorrow. Nintendo sent me a birthday wallpaper but it should be tomorrow, not today.
@sinalefa Wait, you have the same birthday as my son? I already knew that didn't I? Well happy birthday to you!! Are you 40 yet? Your profile says 37, but that's 4 years old, I don't know if those things auto-update or we just put it in once and it stays that way. These websites could use more 40 somethings.
@rjejr
Yes, you knew it already And the profile updates itself, but in a few years your wish will come true. Thanks!!!
@sinalefa Well I did the math, and you are closer in age to me than my sons, so you're ok. Jax is 31, 20 years older than my son, 19 years younger than me, he's cutting it close for hanging out w/ the cool kids. (Hes only 18 years older than my other son, but I'll ignore that. 84 year old Murdoch got engaged to 59 year old Jerry Hall, so at a 25 year difference they have us all beat.)
