Re: PSX 2015: Dreams Come True with PS4 Exclusive Ni no Kuni II

I was very confused while watching this trailer. The trailer keeps mentioning a King who has to prove himself, but yet they kept showing footage of a little blonde girl. Finally I realized that that little girl is actually the male character they keep referring to.

Stellar character design there, Level-5. Oliver at least looked like a male.

I'm sure the game will be great and I did enjoy the first one. Still, if your character is meant to be a young boy, make him look like a boy.

As always, a very fair review. I especially liked your opening line as it instantly addresses what I'm sure was on plenty of our minds.

One of the major aspects that I look for in a review is whether or not the game has any serious performance or technical issues. I know both of those typically go hand-in-hand with this series, with Unity obviously being a disaster last year, so I'm happy to hear that it sounds like Ubisoft is actually shipping a finished game to store shelves this fall.

I generally don't write such lengthy comments, but un-finished games being released to the paying public is my biggest gripe with the video game industry.

Re: Nintendo's Reggie Is Still Having a Pop at PlayStation

Iwata is the captain of the Titanic and Reggie is that one crew member who runs around the deck and tries to convince people that the ship is not taking on water.

As for his remark about Sony unveiling games that don't come out until years down the road - shut up, that's exactly what Nintendo does with every core Zelda game. The Wii U Zelda was first mentioned as being in development in January of 2013. It was shown at E3 2014, and it skipped E3 2015 entirely. I highly doubt the game will be out by E3 2016. So shut your mouth and get your facts straight, Reggie.

"I'm not buying this day one though. After F3, NV and Skyrim I'm going to leave it a bit to let them iron out the bugs."

Yeah, I hardly ever get anything day one anymore. As you say, I'd rather wait until the various patches are released and the bugs are ironed out. Just the age we live in I suppose.

Re: Next God of War to Set PS4 Apart from the Other Platforms

I agree that it's time to move on from Kratos. His story has been told and this new game will be better because of it. Just like Mass Effect 4 will move on from Shepard. The characters and setting don't make the game - the gameplay does.

I really don't agree that "Kratos is god of war, the game would completely suck ass, if he's not in it."

If Metal Gear Solid can survive without Solid Snake, I think the God of War series will be fine.

Re: Talking Point: What One Game Do You Always Come Back To?

PS3: Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010). Whenever I'm in the mood for something fun, mindless, and relaxing this is where I turn, and is a game that I've happily spent 80 hours with.

Wii U: Tropical Freeze, for all the same reasons as above.

SNES/Wii VC: Super Mario World, and DKC 1 and 2. Three games that I love to sit down and beat in a single sitting.

Re: Feature: The Seven Deadly Sins of Game Design

Great list! I particularly agree with the QTE one. Generally speaking I don't mind them (they're done well in God of War I think) but there was one near the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 that has to be the worst use of the idea that I've ever seen. When Snake is crawling through the reactor or whatever and you have to repeatedly hit triangle for about 5 minutes straight. Awful and pointless. I get it. It's killing him. Just crawl through the damn cutscene. Don't make me wear down a button on my new DualShock.

Also, the Lords of Shadow 2 image that you picked for the stealth point is completely on par. I decided not to buy that game when I found out how ridiculous the stealth sections were.

Finally, I'd like to offer two more ideas that would be on my list:

1) Unskippable cutscenes. I'll gladly watch a cutscene the first time. But if it's 10 minutes long and right before a boss, and that boss then kills me, and I can't fight him again without sitting through that same cutscene again, then we have a problem.

2) Puzzles. Pushing crates, rotating beams of light, placing objects on pressure plates, etc. Over the years I have become so sick of this type of gameplay that I just don't play games anymore that have puzzles. Dark Siders 2 is one of the worst examples. I'm a friggin' Horseman of Apocalypse, but I can't access this room without first pushing some boxes around? Shut up, game designers.
