Sony Santa Monica's no stranger to stunning visuals, and it looks like it intends to set a brand new bar with the forthcoming God of War PS4. As part of a job listing β we know, it's a really slow week β dug up by the eagle-eyed DualShockers, the developer is looking for a senior FX artist who will help to create "jaw dropping visuals".
But there's more: "As a senior FX artist, you must possess the ability to effectively collaborate with the art and creative directors to create FX that are stunning while also working with other development team members to ensure technical feasibility," the recruitment advertisement adds. "Help us create amazing top of class games that will set the PS4 apart from the rest."
We already know that the studio's working on the next entry in Sony's popular character action series, with God of War II director Cory Barlog brought back to lead the project. The big question is: will this release star Kratos, or will it be a reboot? We probably won't find out for a while β but in the meantime, God of War III Remastered is right around the corner.

Confirmed to be running at 30fps as all these devs (apart from a select few) just care about making it look super shiny then optimised for the genre. They're focus should be rock solid 60fps then worry about making it pretty.
@Jazzer94 I dunno, God of War I and II ran at 60FPS on the PS2 and looked stunning. God of War III wasn't quite as smooth on the PS3, but they definitely didn't settle for 30FPS either.
They'll go for 60FPS I reckon as it's a key part of the series.
Just keep Kratos out of it He's probably the worst of the modern Video game protagonist. He's in what an interesting setting yet he has less depth than the gears of wars guys and is always on rage mode 24/7.
@shingi_70 Yeah, I really hope they go with a completely different mythology this time. I thought Kratos was fine, but his arc is over - it's time for something different now.
There's absolutely no reason why they can't do Norse or Egyptian or anything with the blueprints they've established.
@get2sammyb norse would be EPIC!
@get2sammyb I loved GOW 3 but man was its framerate all over the place, and yes for the time it looked good (still does) but it just like 1 and 2 the developers didn't have priorities straight lock down 60fps then make it look good especially for this genre.
Also GOW 1 and 2 were not 60fps on PS2 but didn't fluctuate as bad as GOW 3 did on PS3.
I'm pretty stoked about GOW 3 Remastered this summer. I need to beat 1 & 2 HD on PS3 first though, which will be hard to accomplish because of Bloodborne and Borderlands and games on my Nintendo platforms keeping me busy. Also, yes, new character in a new mythology is what I hope they're doing for PS4's first original GOW. Still a bummer that Santa Monica supposedly canceled a new IP and started working on this instead. I'd like to see them make a game in another genre besides action.
Kratos is god of war, the game would completely suck ass, if he's not in it. We really need god of war 4.
I truly want Egyptian to be the next God of War mythos. Egyptian mythology has some insane stories that can be adapted to a game, especially how some of the gods rise to power and fallen (see Osiris) etc.
Can't wait, I'll replay the god of war remaster to warm my fingers up though glad I've got two pads
60fps please
@FullbringIchigo ThIs.
One thousand times this.
Norse would be effing spectacular. Kratos has had his day now, he was always a bit one note. A change of scene would do the series a huge amount of good.
I agree that it's time to move on from Kratos. His story has been told and this new game will be better because of it. Just like Mass Effect 4 will move on from Shepard. The characters and setting don't make the game - the gameplay does.
I really don't agree that "Kratos is god of war, the game would completely suck ass, if he's not in it."
If Metal Gear Solid can survive without Solid Snake, I think the God of War series will be fine.
@BLPs This was a job description for a senior FX artist....
I think like someone posted earlier (maybe Sammy?), if they use the next GOW game as a oppurtunity for a new setting, like Norse mythology, and got rid of Kratos (yeah, people would cry, but in 2015 we can do better than Kratos, who IMO, was always a bit of a weak character)......it would be ace.
Did we ever get any clarification on that weird teaser that was in GOW:Acension. It seemed to suggest a change of mythology in any follow up. Weirdly throughout all the talk in the last few months nobody has mentioned it.
When the code found in game was solved it led to a VERY vague cinema....
I like Kratos and the graphical style of GoW, but am sick of the combat.
I dont mind them leaving Ktatos behind fora new GoW, Im sure there are other gods of war, or war like, such as anubis, or the 4 horsemen (though theyve been done). Making Thor into a bad@ss could be fun. I know Marvel owns the chararter but they cant own the god mythology can they? Japanese mythology must have a death god, no? Im always good to go for a feudal Japan setting.
@dnky666 Sadly my friend I think it was probably more of a reference to the much rumoured Sci Fi game Santa Monica were making before it was cancelled. Do we actually know for certain that a new God of War is coming, because I know Cory Barlog let slip that a GOW was coming to PS4 at PSX but if it was just based on his word then he might have be referring to the remaster.
@BLPs Please enlighten us on how to make it different from other Hack and Slash ? People are all talk, but I bet you can't even explain it yourself.
@get2sammyb god of war 3 fluctuated around 40fps. today they would normally lock it at 30fps. I personally don't mind 30fps. I love that sony tries to push the visuals to the max and 30fps does let them do it. The last of us would never have looked so good if they made it a 60fps game instead of 30fps.
I'm pretty sure Kratos will still be in it, I mean he's too iconic for the series. I think he's a great character and no, his story didnt really end. It wrapped up the trilogy but his brother was still a big mystery.
I'm thinking we are going to see other mythologies but as Kratos.
@Jazzer94 because god of war uses a fixed camera it looks very good at 30fps. 60fps would do nothing for that game Except make the graphics look worse.
@blah01 for a game that uses a fixed camera? 60fps wouldn't make a difference.
I love the idea of norse or Egyptian setting would be a fun change, and they could even reincarnate kratos for the new setting as a new person, for the die hard kratos fans. But I seriously doubt they will change the main points of the ip on this new flag ship game there making, from there point of veiw it would probably be to much of a gamble.
It's the one popular franchise on PlayStation that I just don't get the hype for , rented the last one on ps3 and found it incredibly boring , tried PSP version too and gave up. I'm very much in the minority as everyone seems to love it , I'm a bit jealous really.
