Re: Talking Point: Do Review Scores Have a Future?

larry_koopa

Generally speaking I will look at the score first, but I always immediately read the review after I look at the score. Numbers don't mean anything unless you read why that number is there.

Ultimately though if it's a game that I know I'm going to enjoy I don't put much stock in the review. For example, growing up every Tales game that I played was generally scored in the 7 range, but yet they're some of my favourite games I've ever played. It's why I've never understood why fanboys get upset when a game like Smash Bros. only gets a 9.5 instead of a 10. If you love the game and enjoy it then why does the review score matter to you?

The main thing I look for in a review is the following: is the game broken. Is it buggy, glitch, does it have performance issues, and is it just generally unfinished (in other words, does it have an Ubisoft-level of polish). There have been times when I was looking forward to a game, read numerous reviews that all agreed on the fact that the game wasn't done yet, and decided to not waste my money.

Re: Don't Hold Out Hope for Jak & Daxter on PS4

@Bad-MuthaAdebisi

I completely agree with what you're saying and with Josh's rationale as well. When I was a kid games like Jak & Daxter appealed to me more than they do now that I'm 27. When I'm in the mood for a cute character platformer I'm happy to turn on my Wii U. I'm glad that Naughty Dog has gone in this direction. Not saying that there's anything wrong with a traditional Nintendo game as I still get a lot of enjoyment out of those, but people's tastes change and grow as they get older.

Re: Talking Point: Are There Any Remasters You Still Want to See on PS4?

larry_koopa

I was all ready to write "with Tomb Raider and the upcoming DmC I have all the PS3 remasters that I want," but then I saw that shot of Shepard when I opened up the article and realized that if the Mass Effect Trilogy comes to the PS4 that I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Personally I love remasters. The new games will all come out eventually, but in the mean time I don't need too much convincing to play a prettier version of a game that I already love.

And I know this isn't Nintendo Life, but I would do unspeakable things for an HD remaster of Super Mario 64 on Wii U.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy PlayStation-Themed Amiibo?

larry_koopa

No. Considering I'm never going to buy any actual amiibo I would certainly never buy any Sony-themed ones. Nothing against the whole "toys-to-life" craze, but gaming is an expensive enough of a hobby as it is. I would much rather spend my hard-earned money on actual games than on pieces of plastic that don't really do anything.

It's one thing when you're a kid and mommy and daddy buy you things. But when you're a grown man who has bills to pay you need to be selective with what you spend your money on. Would I rather get 100s of hours of enjoyment out of Diablo 3, or spend the same amount on 3 amiibo which would collect dust on a shelf?

Re: Preview: The PS4 Exclusives of 2015 - The Order: 1886

@zeldagaymer93

I love how you know the length of the game a month before it's released. But more to the point, plenty of games can be beaten in 10 hours. That doesn't make them bad. There isn't a Mario game out there that I can't plow through in under 10 hours, and those are some of the greatest games ever made. No, this game likely won't have the replay value that some people are looking for in order to justify a purchase, but if you enjoy the experience nonetheless you should want to go back and replay it anyways. Last time I checked The Last of Us doesn't really have much in the way of traditional replay value, but that doesn't change the fact that I've replayed it at least 5 times. But maybe it's just because "the story, gameplay, weapons, and graphics are all incredible."

@get2sammyb

"Meanwhile, our review criticism of artificial intelligence-inflicted collision penalties has been utterly eroded"

That statement is music to my ears. You've done a great job of covering this game in the months since release and keeping us up to date on all the patches and improvements. As somebody who can't stand hearing the words "open world" in the same sentence as "racing game," this is a title that I can't wait to own and dive into.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 52

larry_koopa

... I think I must be missing something with the Taylor Swift talk lol

But yeah, games. Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros on Wii U, Rayman Legends, Diablo 3, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Call of Duty Ghosts on PS3, and Forza 4 on 360. Been a busy couple of weeks and I have a long weekend going on, so all this is long over due.

Re: DmC: Definitive Edition for PS4 Unleashes Its Combo Earlier Than Expected

@k_andersen

If you couldn't even make it through the demo then I really don't think you're in the position to complain about the "protagonist's constant whining." Had you actually completed the game you'd probably realize that that isn't the case at all.

And I love how people claim that this Dante is emo. Right, because all men with short dark hair must be emo. But having silver-blonde hair covering your eyes with a rose in your mouth? Nope, totally not emo in the slightest. So many people hate on this game for no damn reason, and I bet most of them have never played a second of it... not even the demo.

Re: Opinion: Why Sony Will Drop the PS4's Price if Necessary

larry_koopa

I'll be honest, I am waiting for a price drop before I jump on-board. Or, like @Jazzer94 suggests, waiting for Sony to do the inevitable re-design. I can wait. I didn't get a PS3 until the Super Slim was released, so waiting is nothing for me. It just means that by the time I do get a PS4 the game library will be full of titles that I want to play, which certainly is not the case right now.

Re: DmC: Definitive Edition Fires a Wisecrack at PS4 in March

larry_koopa

I loved DmC. I don't really want all that trolling about the title to start up again, but it looks like it's going to. Sigh...

I'll be getting the Definitive Edition and I'll enjoy it as much as I did the original. If people still hate this game just because Dante looks different then they really need to get over themselves. Plenty of other IPs get rebooted and nobody seems to complain about those cough, Tomb Raider. I have no idea why DmC seems to be the only exception.

Re: Yes, Lara Croft Will Likely Still Climb onto PS4 in Rise of the Tomb Raider

larry_koopa

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was originally published by Nintendo for the launch of the Wii U, and less than 6 months later that came to PS3 and 360. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison, but it's still a fact.

What I don't understand is why, when Square Enix was supposedly so disappointed with how the reboot sold, would they then only release the sequel on one console, a console which is being handily outsold by the PS4. This obviously severely limits the amount of potential customers that the game could have (even if it is only a timed-exclusive.) Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it??

Finally, Square Enix said that the reboot "failed to reach predicted sales targets." To that I say that they clearly had the wrong sale targets. The game has gone on to sell over 6.5 million copies. How is that a failure? It's only a failure if they were expecting GTA or Call of Duty-like numbers, which would have been stupid.

Anyways, I just wrote way more in a comment than I generally like to... sorry, just really passionate about this topic I guess...
