Re: Lots of New EU PlayStation Store Sales Start Today, Huge Variety of Games Discounted

“big games at low prices which, unless you've got stock in the publisher, is obviously a good thing for you.”

This is unsustainable. We don’t know for certain whether the push for DLC and MTX would have happened but if you have a userbase that expects to see games discounted hugely within months of launch and won’t buy at full price publishers are going to look for a way round that. Publishers aren’t going to keep pouring money into games if they don’t make money. They get attracted to the idea of GAAS because of he revenue stream it (theoretically) provides. It’s a tough one to accept because everyone wants cheap games and everyone wants to think that’s fine and has no aftereffects, but it does.

I’m not sure how the race to the bottom on pricing is good for anyone, if publishers can’t make money off initial sales they look to DLC and Microtransactions. But specific to Nintendo, their main source of revenue is their own games. If they can sell them full price (rather than giving hem to bargain hunters backlogs for a lot less money) they would be crazy not to. They also hold their price which makes it easier to try their games knowing you can trade them in.

Re: PS4 Controlled 63% of the UK's Software Share in September

Not really a surprise. They’ve taken the U.K. market very seriously since entering it in 1995. At that point SEGA were imploding and Nintendo used a third party to distribute their (late, expensive and letterboxed) games in the U.K. Sony didn’t that mistake and their success is well deserved (well Ok, there was letterboxing).

@Derpie1

Sony got it dead right into the UK from the start. They were the first of the platform holders to not treat the UK like an afterthought, putting lots of effort into marketing and courting retail and the press. Nintendo didn't even handle their own distribution until 2002. They don't stand a chance now.

@jgrangervikings1

It's the UK. As @Mahe points out, even Knack (worldwide sales estimated at 1.87m) managed to outsell Mario 3D World (worldwide sales 5.7 million) in the first week they were out in the UK. Nintendo have always struggled in the UK mainly down to their own mismanagement. Switch seems to be doing a bit better though.

Re: Guide: All Free PS Plus Games in 2017

The PS4 selection is improving as the system gets older, naturally enough. Still, given I don't play online much and when I do it seems to be on other systems I'm probably going to let my Plus lapse when it runs out next year. Games are so cheap anyway these days if you wait until a few weeks after launch it isn't worth it.

Re: Game of the Year 2016: #8 - DOOM

Pleased to see this getting recognition. I gather the MP is nothing special but I don't play multiplayer anyway. It's funny that after being bored of FPS games for a few years I've played 2 this year (Doom and Titanfall 2) that have absolutely captured my attention. Putting aside debates about technical aspects or structure this is the one I've had slightly more fun with. Great game.
