My Xbox One rarely sees the light of day, but since its release last week, I've been playing Crackdown 3. It's dumb, mindless fun that doesn't move the needle in the slightest. Announced nearly five years ago, it needed to be more than that for Microsoft, though – a company in dire need of something positive to talk about outside of first-party studio acquisitions. As one of maybe two or three major Xbox One exclusives set to release in 2019, Crackdown 3 needed to be more than a bang-average title if it wanted to pit itself against the sea of quality content you can only find on PlayStation 4. It was a development cycle that's actually not so dissimilar to that of The Last Guardian's, but that's where the major difference between the two brands lie. Sony supports its projects through the highs and lows of development because it can recognise a diamond in the rough, whereas Microsoft has to otherwise it'll have nothing else to talk about.
However, let's get one thing straight: Microsoft is most likely going to consider Crackdown 3 a success. Record Game Pass numbers will be boasted about, and player engagement will be off the charts. The hardware manufacturer is on a completely different barometer to Sony. It's all about how many people played the game and how much time they spent in that world rather than raw software sales. But one thing the Aaron Greenberg's of the world can't talk up is the game's critical receiving.
Currently sitting at a rather measly Metacritic rating of 60, Crackdown 3 can hardly be considered a good game. In complete contrast, The Last Guardian was a critical darling. Originally announced 10 years ago all the way back at E3 2009, it wasn't until 2016 that the title finally hit store shelves. With an even longer development time that made many question whether the game would ever release after numerous trademark expirations and empty promises that it was still a thing at all, it's sort of hard to believe that it far out-paces a competitor that hit the market two and a half years later. It plays better, it looks better, and it feels better. It builds a deeper emotional connection than any Xbox exclusive could ever hope to achieve. We could go on, but it sort of begs the question: what is Microsoft doing with its time? Crackdown 3's open-world is incredibly simple, its structure is basic, and visually it wouldn't look out of place amongst the console's launch line-up from 2013. It's a product of a bygone era that has no place releasing so late into a generation, all the while marketed as a tent-pole release.
While the next generation has the potential to be a whole different story, let's discuss what's happening now. In 2019, Crackdown 3 will most likely be joined by Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Gears of War 5 as part of the system's exclusive line-up. It's a bit of a paltry list that PlayStation puts to shame. Days Gone is just two months away from launch, Dreams, Erica, and Concrete Genie are surely set to launch in 2019, while there's still the outside chance of one of The Last of Us: Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, or Death Stranding sneaking in before the year closes. We're not even going to bother bringing up PlayStation VR exclusives because then we'd be here all day.
While talking up numbers is all well and good, we're going to return to that concept of quality. Sea of Thieves might be experiencing a resurgence, but at launch it joined the likes of State of Decay 2 in letting fans down. It's just so bizarre that when an Xbox One exclusive does eventually come along to give die-hards something to shout about, it is almost always of questionable quality once the experience gets out into the wild. Meanwhile, does anyone question whether any of the aforementioned PS4 exclusives will actually meet the level of good or not? I think not. Microsoft might be bolstering the number of studios that make up its first-party, but that doesn't solve the problems it faces when the question of quality takes to the field. When compared to the portfolio that PlayStation can brag about, it's almost like child's play. For this generation at least, Sony didn't even have to try.
What do you think of Liam's evaluation? Will things be different next generation after the beefing up of Microsoft's first-party portfolio? Have a fair and balanced discussion in the comments below.

I think people underestimate the value of having a good management structure around the teams. People like Scott Rohde don't spend a lot of time on Twitter, but if you speak to the first-party teams, they all sing his praises. I think it was Insomniac who said that PlayStation's publishing pipeline is by far and away the most streamlined in the entire industry for single player games, and they've worked with multiple publishers including Microsoft so should know.
A lot's been said about all these acquisitions but there are a few points of consideration I think: the teams are mostly small, so I wouldn't expect Naughty Dog calibre games out of them. I think Xbox will be trying to release regular, smaller budget games to maintain engagement on Game Pass. I also think it's going to take time and patience for them to get up to speed. And finally, for the saviour that PR has made him to be, Phil Spencer was in charge of first-party prior to getting the job at the top seat. You can say management stifled him all you like, but he's the one who decided to double down on Forza and Halo for years and ultimately put them in this position.
Still have a problem calling any of those titles exclusive when you can get them most likely cheaper on Steam (also I don't consider Death Stranding a exclusive).
I get the feeling they are saving their best stuff for their next xbox, I'm sure they want to get a huge lead on Playstation early on.
Today is about owning a PS4 and a Switch. That way, you have every gaming need covered.
You could own PC if you are a bit more hardcore, but that's more optional.
Microsoft Excel in PowerPoints.
Sony is where real gamers walk man!
I've just platinumed Astrobot and it's the most eye opening thing since Ridge Racer and Final Fantasy 7 got me gooey eyed in the 90s. Bravo Sony thank you for this masterpiece.
It's all well and good MS buying studios "to deliver content to Game Pass" but have they actually showed that they can manage their studios properly? Having Crackdown 3 go through a number of studios to get it out was laughable and wasn't the first time they did it either (See Halo MCC). Scalebound was cancelled despite been arguably their most interesting exclusive, State of Decay 2 was buggy which considering their first party now shouldn't be happening. Sea of Thieves suffered from lack of content and now this. And this was all under Phil Spencer's watch.
I do find it amusing that after the puddlegate nonsense from Spiderman, MS show what a real downgrade is with "the POWER OF THE CLOUD" (or lack thereof) rendering a fully destructible city.
I really don't think this article needed to be written. Fanboyism is bad enough as it is and whilst MS aren't exactly helping themselves with this game that is very much stuck in the era the first game was but all this article is doing is just flame baiting.
As a gamer on Xbox myself, I am sure the majority of us are incredibly disappointed that this game is a far cry from its 'promise' and that this game was pushed through an extended development time and yet Scalebound (which may be resurrected on Switch now I read) was cancelled.
Its clear why MS has gone out looking for Studio's to buy when their own 'few' can't make games quickly as well as quality to appease their gamers.
@Juanalf Microsoft exclusives are NOT available on steam. They are available though to any Windows 10 PC gamers who have an 'Xbox/MS account' (they are the same either way) and purchased through the MS store so regardless of the hardware you choose to play on, you have to play on a Microsoft system, have a Microsoft account, and buy digitally from a Microsoft store (on PC & Xbox) or physically for the console. On PC, you are basically playing on a virtual Xbox with your own specs. Regardless of platform, they are ALL Xbox now as that is the name/brand of Microsoft gaming - so if you play on PC, its still an Xbox brand and bought from Microsoft so still exclusive to Xbox/Microsoft regardless
I'm very happy with my Switch and my PS4 at the moment. Both have all the games I'm interested in playing so far. At least for me, there's no reason to get a Xbox One unless it is cheaper where you live (at least over here it is) or if you want a slightly better graphical performance in some games (on Xbox one X) and don't want to buy/build a gaming PC.
@Juanalf 'Still have a problem calling any of those titles exclusive when you can get them most likely cheaper on Steam.'
Did you read the article and what does this even mean?
'also I don't consider Death Stranding a exclusive'
In that case you may also consider that tomorrow Bill Gates will throw cash at your front door and bring along a real live Cortana. Get your pants down and bucket ready, it's gonna be a big one!
@AdamNovice I don't want this article to turn into a pile-on because I don't think that was Liam's intention but... I do feel like Microsoft has been all-talk this generation. There are so many initiatives that they've talked up and have turned out half-hearted.
Remember when they positioned HoloLens as some kind of rival to PSVR, and then put it out for corporations only and never spoke of it again.
It kinda irritates me because it almost feels like they talk about these things just to ensure they're attaching themselves to some kind of conversation that they know they're not really a part of.
Ooooh get ready for this comment section to explode!!!! Here we go!
It's honestly a shame what Microsoft hasn't been doing on the games front. Gamespass is what they are focused on and it shows. Maybe next gen will be different but I wouldn't hold my breath. They are about services now not Games. I feel that the games those new acquisitions make are gonna be tailored for gamespass. Not anything more.
@Al_Godoy
"Today is about owning a PS4 and a Switch. That way, you have every gaming need covered"
Yep, Nailed it. Best gaming combo in years
PC gaming is an expensive side project for some of us - but not really a must for most.
Wait Crackdown 3 is out? Ahahaha...literally no one talked about this game!
What a mess! MS is basically dead this gen, but oh well
Wow the arrogance of the writing staff just grows by the day here now doesn't it?
I like some of the stuff Microsoft is doing at the moment like Game Pass and Play Anywhere, even some of their hardware has been interesting. Looking sttictly at the games though, it is a different story. Outside of Forza and Gears this gen, there has not been much in the way of first party content. Their best non Gears or Forza game was developed by Insomniac.
At this point, I think they should just focus on what they have shown they are good at. Buying up studios and trying to compete with Sony first party just seems like a wasted effort. Fortunately I’ll just play those handful of games that are interesting on PC.
I mean, Xbox can't compete on quality with the other two console manufacturers, not just one.
Problem is, it's not that Crackdown 3 is mediocre, it's that it's mediocre after so long and so many promises. The notion of Xbox canning projects like Scalebound, in favour of "quality" but that quality never panned out.
That said, I believe the baiting shouldn't happen. Missteps were made, as such they should be noted. But we don't need a "My game that was in development hell and proved divisive is better than your game in less dev hell time but made by more teams and came out simply average" hand waving contest.
Neither of those scenarios are good people.
On the plus side, @LiamCroft just made TWO paycheques. This article can literally be recycled, replace Sony with Nintendo and The Last Guardian with any given Zelda game that got delayed for the past decade and a half and boom, money rolls in.
Anyone expecting this game, or any of the Gears of War games, or Halo, or Forza, to be any sort of evolution beyond some quality of life improvements over their previous games.....I don't know what to tell you, it's not going to happen. And I'm a big fan of 3 of those franchises, and I enjoy them immensely. But they are what they are, and will be nothing more.
I think Crack Down 3 is proof that launching a $60 mediocre "exclusive" at the same time as "great" multi-platforms are out is a bad idea.
If you going to do that - it needs to be at this level.
https://www.polygon.com/2019/2/14/18224190/dice-awards-2019-winners-god-of-war-ps4
Being on Xbox (and PS4) is not like Switch. Where if you have a bad 1st party you need to live with it. On Xbox - They will just play METRO and wait see how ANTHEM and The Division 2 pan out.
You always have "The next AAA" around the corner.
Well I like to think that this is the last product of the old xbox era. I hope MS sees the lesson in this. Tbh this game scoring above a 70 in MC was always a stretch.
@WebHead Indeed, looking at the timescale for this, its obvious its the final relic of the Mattrick era.
Plus it fully validates Nintendo's decision to restart Metroid Prime 4, which was reportedly under an ad-hoc development structure similar to Crackdown 3, with multiple studios working on different parts: It just doesn't work.
Or in the case of Spyro, works, but barely.
@get2sammyb Yeah, you're right Sammy. I do like my Xbox One and I think Game Pass is a great service, but it simply pales in comparison when the PS4 and its line-up is brought into the mix.
Sony is killing it this generation, but we've got to remember that healthy competition is good for the industry. A better Xbox is going to push PlayStation to top that.
@Knuckles-Fajita I just hope MS understands now that regardless of scale, good games take time. People will wait for good games. Xbox game studios must provide quality games. At launch too.
@Chunky_Droid Aye, the big arrogant games journalists over at Push Square, owning everyone with their articles about video games, that's us.
@get2sammyb I am sure it irritates 'fans' of MS and Xbox more. The 'promise' of Hololens (not that I was entirely convinced of its gaming application) and of course VR with the X - which would have meant their speech on not leaving the current Xbox behind as it wouldn't cope with VR couldn't be true either. You either keep all the software the same so you can't give VR to X only or you let Devs release software exclusive to X and leave the old box behind.
Talking of the old box, that could be a major reason that games are so 'mediocre' at best. The console is the weakest 'home' console on the market (Switch is a portable device that can be used at home imo) and as such, is dragging the quality of games down because they are wasting 'resources' on hitting 1080p on a console that's barely able to deliver HD in some games.
I also get the feeling that Crackdown was rebuilt from the ashes after it went down like a lead balloon after their disaster showing at Gamescom in 2017 (or was it 2016... I can't remember now) but either way, the game was a disaster showing with people that had no idea what to do or how to even use a controller trying to show some 'game-play'. The destruction is a joke - and not built by the team who built the SP. Only 2 people co-op not 4 as promised.
I also get the feeling that MS just pushed this through as quickly as possible after that disaster to get it out and start recuperating 'ANY money back from it. I know there are some people that are enjoying the SP in a 'nostalgic' way, playing a game that could literally be a sequel of the first crackdown made in 2008/9. The main criticism is that the game hasn't evolved and is stuck in 2008/9.
The last Guardian is a completely different case. The first 'demo' was sped up 2x to look like it was running at 30fps. It was too ambitious for the generation it was expected to launch on. Crackdown 3 is basically a 360 game - just like the first two were. its not ambitious or particularly waiting for the technology to come out so you can realise the game. Therefore a very different example
Crackdown 3 was certainly not part of the Phil Spencer reign either as he inherited this from the previous Head, the same head that screwed up E3 2013 too.
I could go on but like I said, I really don't think this article needed publishing. If the reverse situation had happened, would you appreciate an article like this? Would you not be 'angry' and/or 'disappointed' with whoever published an article like this? would you consider it 'flame bait'?
I purchased an Xbox One last year, as i passed my Xbox 360 onto my son a few years ago, and wanted to try a few MS exclusives. After about 2 months of playing State of Decay 2 (which i enjoyed the most), Sea of Thieves and Forza, i ended up selling the console. Why? Because i found that those games weren't holding my attention like the PS4 and Switch games do. Plus 90% of the other games are also available on either Sony or Nintendo's platforms. MS really need to do something special or different with the next console. IMO the Xbox One had the worst dashboard and console performance of the all the systems. Moving around the dashboard was slow and always delayed, as was the internet connection. And way too many ads.
Oh - and on games, Forza Horizon 4 was a big success and the fastest selling game of the Forza franchise. It also scooped numerous awards too inc the best Racing game. OK so it didn't win the main award, not that it was nominated but still was an award winning successful game that only released 4months ago....
@WebHead I mean it's not like a delayed game is eventually good, because it isn't. We see that a lot. Divisive tends to be the best those kinds of games get these days, just see SquareEnix and their laundry list of delayed titles that came out mixed. Even KH3 came out to a general "Good but not great" reception from fans.
I think Xbox actually lacks the man power, and in their case, due to Xbox being a loss leader for Microsoft, when a game gets into this point, where Sony or Nintendo would absorb the cost of developing the game or restarting, Microsoft ends up losing more money on top of the money already lost on Xbox that we know they don't recuperate in full. So that means they end up in a situation where they just have to say screw it, we sank too much into this, throw it out.
@LiamCroft Interesting that you're leaving this conclusion to your article out of the actual article.
Microsoft is horrible. haha.the crackhead is down.and it can't get up .thank God I'm a PlayStation fan since day 1.playstation is the g.o.a.t word up son
Some think it's "fanboy baiting" but the article brings up a relevant question. What reason is there to buy an Xbox console now?
Their games are on PC.
Most aren't well received.
If it's power you want, your better off getting a PC.
Microsoft are getting platform agnostic with each passing day, instead they want to focus on services across different devices because console sales alone aren't enough for them.
As someone said earlier PS4 and Switch sets you for gaming this gen cos you aren't missing an awful lot after that cos you getting the majority of the best 3rd party and indie games plus Sony and Nintendo's exclusives.
Good job in trying to stir the pot. Hope this article gets the clicks you need.
@LiamCroft wrong .sony always kills it every generation ps1.ps2.ps3.they have the best exclusive.microsoft is just doo doo.crack head is down 3.sea of piss.state of diseases.are horrible.glad I'm a day 1 ps1 fan since September 9.1995.word up son
@CK97
I’ve never owned an Xbox console and this generation never gave the incling to. I keep only 1 console and that’s my PS4. I love how Switch is portable but none of the games appeal to me. At the moment I’m playing ESO through Remote Play and its great. Not all games will play this well but I’m loving it.
rumor has it that scalebound is going to be a Nintendo switch exclusive.haha.like hall and Coates say. Microsoft is out of touch🙊🙈👼😳😁👍.word up son
@Juanalf death standing has been said to not be coming to pc anymore so how isn’t it exclusive and how isn’t tlou part 2 and ghosts not exclusive because they most def are
To be honest, the only reason I still have my Xbone around is for Rare Replay, Gears 2/3 and Halo 1/3.
I sold my 360 a long time ago but still have my original Xbox for the Conker remake and a few other games.
I know it may sound cliche or fanboyish, but Nintendo, Sony and PC will always hold a special place in my heart because they are what I was both introduced to and grew up with.
But ya know, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a lot of fun with various games on the Xbox and 360, and it shows with my previous paragraph stating that my Xbone is around because of said older games (yes, I know Rare Replay has games from the N64 on it, I like seeing Banjo with nice upped resolution).
Microsoft will have to really, and I mean really knock it out of the park with their exclusives on the next iteration of the Xbox for me to consider buying the console.
@Chunky_Droid how so? This is pretty much what’s being said across the net. If someone wants to be a fanboy and stick their head in the sand and act like nothing’s wrong more power to them but when your two competitors are putting out hit after hit that’s selling gangbusters and winning goty and you respond with sea of thieves, state of decay 2 and crackdown 3 there’s something wrong and you need to be called out.
@WebHead I don’t see how it can be the product of the previous era when it was announced, developed, and released all under the current management.
@BAMozzy if the shoe was on the other foot and it was sony push square would have absolutely published an article calling Sony out like they have numerous times on other subjects
That last game I bought on Xbox One was Cuphead on day 1. I enjoy the One for what it is but I just don’t play it like I did back in 2015. Killer Instinct, Rare Replay, and Dead or Alive 5 were the main games I played but all that changed once I got a PS4. PS4 just has a lot of games I just can’t play on Xbox. It’s just how it is. It’s cool that the One is backwards compatible but that ain’t enough. I only use the One just to chat with friends on there now. I need to go back and beat Dead Rising 4 on there but I really don’t feel like it. It’s the PS4 and Switch combo for me but I do hope Xbox can get better exclusives.
That’s why they call it Game Pass though. It’s full of games you would pass on if you had to buy full price!
Spot on Liam. You also have motivated me to go back and finish The Last Guardian!
@Juanalf considering Death Stranding is built using the Decima engine that Horizon was made with I seriously doubt it will ever come to a non Playstation platform.
I meant isn't Death Stranding coming to PC aswell? I don't consider games for xbox, Playstation or Nintendo that are also on PC as exclusives since you can play them else where. By that standard Microsoft has zero exclusives.
Microsoft only selling about 15 XB1s a week in Japan surely isn't helping them, but then they also have even less to offer Japanese gamers than they do Western ones. Their general mentality and game line-up also seems woefully stuck in the late 2000s, very early 2010s. Crackdown 3 basically looking and playing like a game from 2007 really epitomises that. I also can't see how they can regain momentum with their next console. It'd take Sony to catastrophically screw up the PS5 for that.
Though Nintendo aren't in a great position when the PS5 is announced either, since sales are already flagging and they're doing their usual Nintendo thing of only really having one, two if they're lucky, big games a quarter - and not getting literally at least 90% of games being released. Look how it's considered big news for Switch to get an old PS1 game 22 years after it's release, FFVII. And the recent release of the iOS version of FFIX is the first numbered FF they've got since 1994, yet again its seen as an exciting release where it'd totally fly under the radar on PC or PS4 (even XB1). I do like my Switch but let's just say I'm glad I got it for £60 with some trade-ins.

@Juanalf No, it's published by Sony. PC isn't mentioned as a platform on Wikipedia or the official site either.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Stranding
http://www.kojimaproductions.jp/sp/en/works.html
@Juanalf Where have you got this information? As far as I'm aware Death Stranding is exclusive to PlayStation. Just like God of War, Horizon zero dawn, Dreams etc.
@Matroska What are you talking about the Switch flagging in sales? Just because they lowered their sales forecast, doesn't mean they're falling behind. Don't spread misinformation. Also, you do realize they have a big lineup this year right?
@Matroska The issue for Switch owners is that Nintendo first party games generally sell way better than any Western 3rd party games on the system. Justifiably Western developers refuse to promote and develop big projects which won't sell. So you will always get this exact conundrum. It's been this way since Gamecube regretably.
On the other hand I wouldn't want them to change. All the games are polished and fun (if a little bland and overly familiar). I've played and knocked Odyssey, Smash and MK but I've put more time into them than some games in my PS4 backlog.
@themcnoisy "Justifiably Western developers refuse to promote and develop big projects which won't sell. So you will always get this exact conundrum. It's been this way since Gamecube regretably."
I think the real problem is "horsepower" Since the GC Nintendo consoles have not been on par with the competition in terms of power and 3rd party devs have to spend extra time to port their games.
I use my Xbox One for multiplats and the games that I can't get elsewhere whereas my PS4 is strictly exclusives.
I don’t consider myself a fanboy. I love the PS4 and Switch equally, but man I have desire to get a Xbox One
@PS_Nation Playstation Now why is the stream so laggy on my fast connection? 😝
@EVIL-C 2.5/10
@PS_Nation Is what I'd rate Sony's expanded service and functionality offerings at this time, compared to their competition, if I had to assign a score. 😉
@themcnoisy I'm with you right here. I personally wish that they stop being so uptight when it comes to that issue and jump back to the "horsepower" scene. This is coming from someone who is a HUGE Nintendo and Sony fan.. And...well the less we say about their online service, the better. But I'm like you, I love the way Nintendo is; especially now with them being more aggressive as far as with exciting new ips, better than ever sequels to beloved franchises, beloved classics getting remakes, more third-party multiplats, and so on. So it's an amazing time to be an Sony and Nintendo gamer.
Now getting back on topic, Microsoft NEEDS to step it up next gen. It looks like they are making the right calls by buying more studios, but like some of ya'll already said, we'll see if they can stand toe-to-toe with Sony and Nintendo. I know I've trashed Xbox like crazy, I'll admit that, but competition is important. I don't do all this console wars nonsense, so it's kind of disheartening when not everybody is nourishing in the console market. And this is coming from who couldn't care less about the games they offer in this day 'n age despite the fact that when I started gaming, I started out as a Xbox gamer with the OG Xbox.
@Juanalf Death Stranding has never been announced for PC as far as I'm aware and has always been a Sony exclusive. Sony is publishing the game. Kojima Productions and Sony have a 1-game exclusivity deal in place and Death Stranding is it.
@EVIL-C My Ps now is perfect for me no lag nothing just as if it was a disc. Just because you have fast internet lets say gig up/gig down doesnt mean you have great connection. You have fast internet thats capable of running ps now but you could have a crappy signal coming into your modem. you could be losing data packets every other minute. which could be the reason of your lag. and not the service.
I appreciated crackdown 3, the cutscenes were 15 seconds and then it gave the game back to me, no plodding walking sections, all backstory was given by rebel lady over the coms. Guns selection is widely varied and no weapon feels worthless aside from your starter pistol.
That said it does lack replay value and I'm glad I paid $1 for gamepass instead of $80 in store.
I loved the first Crackdown. I really want to play Cuphead and Ori the blind forest plus it's sequel, maybe next gen or i can get a cheap xbox down the line. Haven't been excited for xbox exclusive in ages and the live service games most companies are pushing just seem like time wasters, i want stories and experiences as well as the occasional challenge. Sony already have me hooked in for PS5 because i want to know what happens next in GOW, Spider-man, HZD and hopefully Bloodborne 2 will be a thing!
@playstation1995 I’m surprised you’re seemingly ok with this rumor and not annoyed it’s not a PlayStation Exclusive instead.
@BAMozzy When I read the article, I get a sense of honest lament that Xbox needs to be doing better. I get the feeling it's bit of a call for better competition. I don't think the intent was to fanboy, but point out the comparison between the 2 has has become far more ridiculous than it ever should have. It really is amazing how bad MS has been with exclusives this gen.
Sounds like a console war flame bait article. I know it's not meant to be but I'm not sure what the point of it is. Why comparing TLG to CD3 too?
On topic then, what I saw of the game makes me think of a Disney Infinity game. That's how high I see the game. Might be fun though.
OK not going to be hypocrite the whole thing since the CG announcement, the hype building from Ms etc cracks me up. OK I'm done doing console war thing.
@themcnoisy The problem is bigger when you consider that a good number of Swith owners have a X1 or PS4, and the third-party games just tend to be better on those two consoles than they are on the Switch.
@Slasher It's regularly being outsold by the PS4 each month. If it's already in that state, when the next generation starts properly, it'll be even worse. And they really don't have a big line-up this year. A remake of a GB game is probably their biggest thing all year so. Personally I'm most looking forward to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but most FE fans think it looks pretty bad and FE isn't a huge series anyway, even if it WAS more eagerly anticipated by hardcore fans it's not a big seller, sadly.
And there's other bad news, like how Pokemon Let's Go is one of the worst selling games in the series in Japan. About half its shipments went unsold. Most of the pretty light line-up for 2019 is only preaching to the converted, as well. Anyone who considers Yoshi's Woolly World an exciting release already has a Switch.
@BAMozzy
It's not often the case but I agree with you here. Article makes sense for a multiplat site but not on a PlayStation only site. If anything it gives Xbox the attention it doesn't deserve from a ps site.
@AdamNovice
'What reason is there to buy an Xbox console now?'
Thats not a relevant question for a PlayStation focused site haha
Selling my xbox one x was the best thing I did console wise. Horrid dashboard with intrusive tiles, terrible reward offeringz and an absolutely lack luster offering of exclusive titles. If Sony can release a racing game to rival Forza and forza horizon series there really is no need to ever look at an xbox. It still baffles me as to how people can say the xbox is the better console.
@BAMozzy yeah the Xbox isn't in as bad a position as this likes to make out, I mean since the turn of the year I've used it almost exclusively for multiplatform stuff and online. My stepson has the S and I have the X and with one gold and one gamepass subscription we have access to a lot of great games to play together. Having had a lot of fun with the likes of Forza 4 and Sea of Thieves and dare I say it but we've quite enjoyed playing Crackdown 3 in co-op.
I don't get The Last Guardian comparison and didn't that launch around the time of Gears of War 4? The biggest issue for Xbox is since releasing the X they have have had only really Forza Horizon 4 as a new game (Though Halo 5 and Gears 4 look incredible on it) to show it off, where as Sony has had a bit of a purple patch since Horizon Zero Dawn with God of War and Spider-Man. Another big pull for me is I like playing some older games so the likes of Red Dead Redemption, Halo collection and The Witcher 2 in 4K are great as is Panzer Dragoon Orta and Conker live and reloaded, oh and Cuphead is one of the very best games I've played this generation.
I just don't get the point of the article yeah we all know Crackdown 3 isn't as good as some of the PlayStation exclusives and Sony has a few more at the moment with a great couple of years but let's be honest the only big game confirmed for this year on PS4 is Days Gone
well its exactly what xbox games well most of them anyways dumb mindless fun. Gears Of War is a prime example. A game which i myself had fun with. But thats how xbox games and that what makes Playstation and Nintendo so different to xbox in my opinion.
@BAMozzy It really isn't fanboyism though. It is kind of the truth. Microsoft exclusives this gen have not been as successful or as polished as Sony's, it's the simple truth. I don't think any Xbox fan should be happy with what they have been given this time around considering exclusives. Don't defend Microsoft for their poor execution, they need to up their game.
@JJ2 It's absolutely relevant as Sony's main competitor in this space. The innovation through competition, the recent acquisition of developers, the state of first party across consoles. I can't really see how this could be any MORE relevant. What Microsoft does can directly influence what Sony does....so if Microsoft doesn't do much at all...well...
I wonder if Game Pass is hurting Xbox exclusives after all Its Game Pass that offers them for $10. Is it that price that is killing exclusives and the quality of the ones that do come from Xbox?I could never imagine the likes of a God of War releasing on a PlayStation game pass for $10 for 30 days. In fact I am glad we don't have a game pass for this possible reason.
@CK97
I like your comment speaking the truth in a funny way. There maybe a more concerning thing though in that Pushsquare doesn't seem to have much news or interesting things to say these days. Hope my comment isn't seen as trolling the site but more as a genuine feedback.
Dunno why people out here start moaning whenever some site criticises a company they always come out of the woodworks I mean wtf.
And death stranding guy game is always ps exclusive.
https://youtu.be/m-FdMbwhKVQ
It's a shame as I really like my 360 & still play some games on it. I think Xbox One hasn't been the success Microsoft hoped for off the back of the 360 as the PS4 started nabbing the exclusivity deals.
For me, I steered away from the Xbox One after the shockingly dire E3 announcement. It seemed like they were a company in disarray.
I never count Microsoft out - working in a tech company these guys have some deep old pockets. They dominate cloud computing. Clearly their old way of producing games didn't work and they now need to do better. I think the comments here might be right though, their aim is not to sell titles, their aim is to lock people into gold and game pass and I think they will focus game development on titles that will further that aim. MS want software as a service - this has become their whole operating model. Xbox is no different.
Time will tell in my opinion.
Nothing new here we'll know that Xbone is trash since the beginning of the generation the same can be said for Nintendo too with the WiiU but at least they did have the games it was just the console that nobody like and the Switch it's proving that now but to me Switch is a new console generation and the definitive winner this generation was obviously the King of consoles the mighty PS4
Microsoft are sitting on some pretty epic IPs that if new versions appeared and were to match/surpass the previous entries i'd probably get an xbox and new ideas would be great as well, Halo/Gears of war i think should be either totally reinvented or giving a break for a bit. I enjoyed the first batch of trilogies in those games.
If SONY brings out a Exclusive AAA game that was broken and rubbish then they would get crucified by the Gaming Media and Internet but when Microsoft do it the Gaming Media and Internet just let them off :-/
@Shellcore
Wait no. That wasn't the point of my comment.
'what reason s there to buy an Xbox console' is not interesting. Heck whether people find a reason or not to buy Xbox isn't any concern for a PlayStation gamer. What Ms does of course is linked to PlayStation news but not wondering if you should or should not buy an Xbox. It's completely irrelevant. Buy an Xbox or buy not. What the hell?
You can buy 10 Xbox X for all I care haha
Terry doesn't dig average console exclusives!
Just watched a video of Crackdown 3. Looks just like a clone of Fortnite or Agents of Mayhem or something. Very average.
At this point in time I'm not sure why anyone developer would release an exclusive on Xbox instead of PS?
i think MS now is aiming for the next gen and everything will be geared up for that. especially all the studios they have signed. It looks like they want to come out all guns blazing. That can only be good for everyone.
@Tasuki You've got a lot of articles and comments you've missed then bud. Lots of S-bombs out there.
This game is fun but informous second son came out 5 years ago and is still technically more impressive all that wasted xbox x potential
This article is great and it’s the truth.
Really interesting that PSVR alone has better games and more exclusives than Xbox One.
I wish another company join the console space instead of MS.
@Knuckles-Fajita But the games are quality titles are theh not?
@Rudy_Manchego Lets hope thats not the future of gaming or i have to go retro. 😁
@Derpie1 yeah but if Nintendo pick it up.nothing anyone can do about that.word up son
@dark_knightmare2 You completely missed the point... The point was what if a Rival Xbox based site had published an article about a PS title in this way...
This article is nothing but fanboy drivel for the most part. Push Square should be better than this.
@Matroska and kojima is using the decima engine.its guerilla games engine.so technically .and of course it's a ps4 exclusive.word up son
I’ve been worrying about the effect of Gamepass on the types of games MS will start pushing out.
Crackdown 3 has only worsened those worries.
I can only hope Sony will be better once they embrace the buisness model- which is just a matter of time imo.
@JJ2 All of the things I mentioned are what would/wouldn't drive someone to buy a console so completely relevant. I want people to be interested in other boxes as it means there is something about them that their current box isn't doing. The fact that this largely isn't happening is disappointing. It's not about revelling in the fact that Sony is outperforming Microsoft, its identifying why that is the case. Completely relevant for the games market in general, hence this is exactly the kind of content we need on gaming sites. Discussion is healthy. Don't be put off by the hypothesis.
@carlos82 Since the X launched, they have had games like Forza Motorsport 7 (a game that beat GTSport to the Best Racing game award in 2017) and Forza Horizon 4 (best racing game in 2018) in ACTUAL 4k HDR and Excellent HDR too. I know they have had Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2 as well as RDR2 All in ACTUAL 4k. Then there is of Course Battlefront 2, Battlefield 5, CoD, Destiny 2, Assassins Creed Origins and Odyssey, Rise and Shadow of the Tomb Raider etc etc All of which look and/or run better on an Xbox - not just a little better but a LOT better. That comes from having a Significant Hardware advantage - not a whole Switch advantage like the PS4 had over the Xbox effectively, bit a whole PS4 advantage over the Pro. You have to bot a PS4 and Pro together to get to get to an X. So whilst these games may also have come out on PS4, the 'best' place to play is on the Xbox and the PS4 is now just an 'exclusives' box. Since the X came out, I have only bought 2 games for my Pro - God of War and Spider-Man. The next game I buy for it will be Days Gone - All just Exclusives! I have (or will by Friday) bought more games in just over a week for my Xbox than I bought all year on my Pro...
Games? the Xbox has Games, it has LOTS of games and the best to play if you want high resolution, best frame rates game-play. Its not just me that constantly finds the Xbox as the best place to play but Digital Foundry do to - they constantly say the Xbox is the best version....
This article though doesn't do anything but flame bait. Its a Playstation site and doesn't need to mention Xbox games at all. In fact in most cases it goes out of its way NOT to mention Xbox at all. All the multi-platform releases for example are coming just to PS (at least that's how the articles read). In general, this site avoids mentioning Microsoft and the Xbox at all....
I have no allegiance either way - I just want the 'best' console gaming experience I possibly can. I am the first to agree that Crackdown 3 is a 'disappointment' - a game that certainly didn't live up to the promises made. Its almost as bad in that regard as No Mans Sky was. I just don't think Push Square needed or should be calling out Microsoft on this. I do think though that MS do need to up their game and deserve the criticism here, but I think that ought to come from MS/Xbox or even Multi-platform based journalists - not those who should be focussed and generally are only focussed on Sony/Playstation. As I said, if an MS/Xbox centred site had written an Article about a Sony Playstation game, the Sony gamers and sites such as Push Square would be angry and disappointed that they had written something that may well be true but still flame baiting!!
@Flaming_Kaiser I know the feeling! Indie games for me...
@BAMozzy "Microsoft exclusives are NOT available on steam. They are available though to any Windows 10 PC gamers who have an 'Xbox/MS account' (they are the same either way) and purchased through the MS store"

@awesomeandstuff Those are all 3rd Party exclusives in the same way that numerous PS4 'exclusives' - like Nioh for example have been PC and PS4 releases. You won't find Forza, Gears of War, Halo etc on Steam!!
@tomassi "At this point in time I'm not sure why anyone developer would release an exclusive on Xbox instead of PS?"
Because Crackdown is owned by Microsoft and they contracted a developer to work on their IP, and or in the case with other exclusives, Microsoft enters a publishing agreement to get a developer's game off the ground?
Like, it should be obvious why developers make exclusives for Xbox. It's because they are using Xbox IP or are owned by Xbox Game Studios
i wish i could play all PS4 exclusives on the X..the hardware is just so much nicer (on the inside, outside and in terms of noise). But I would like to continue to use the PS4 system software on it lol (but with added features such as 4K BD, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos)
I had the original and the 360 before this gen and loved them. Lapping up sequels and so on. Yet even before the current consoles came out, i felt that the focus on their figurehead games: Forza, Halo and Gears among others was becoming almost too important and I got a bit fatigued by more of the same, although this could apply to any console brand used over a period of time.
I ended up grabbing a PS4 and well, i now have a ps3 and Vita along with it.. Thats not to say i have any problem with MS, i just think the direction they were heading for, was not for me. And... thats not also to say that anyone is perfect, Sony have dropped the ball often themselves, but MS have continually made me realise I was right to do so for my gaming needs and I hazard a guess, there were quite a few out there that have made similar decisions. Who knows maybe i will change in years to come, but that depends on many factors
The example given in Crackdown 3 is more a reference to the lack of progression MS seem to have with its big IP's, with the exception of Forza, which goes from strength to strength, while it has somehow failed to ignite the fuse with what were potentially exciting and big new titles over the last few years.
For all its promise, MS may have been better off canning C3, but i guess having done this previously, perhaps further disappointing their userbase with a cancellation was not the best idea.
I woudnt say they have failed as numbers speak for themselves still, regardless of how far they are "behind" in the cobblers that is the "console war" .
They however do definitely need to change tact somewhere, although how, i'm not sure. Bottom line is we need competition. At least that way, no one will rest on their laurels and we as gamers across varying formats get the best efforts made... most of the time.
Yeah but remember you can turn your Xbox One on by saying, "Xbox on.... Xbox on... Xbox... ON... Xbox on... oh just press the button, Linda" so
@LiamCroft I don't disagree with the sentiment behind this article and would certainly not have ANY issue if you had written this in the Xbox thread in the Forums but publishing it as an article on a Playstation site is in my opinion, flame bait.
As I said, I can't disagree with you that MS really do need to up their game. Its been said for years now - although they did start the generation off stronger than Sony did in this regard. You cannot compare Crackdown, a game that really is a 360 era game to Last Guardian which was too ambitious for PS3 and needed to wait for PS4 to come to fruition. The E3 demo of LG had to be sped up to look like it was running properly on a PS3. Point is, these are 2 very different games with one going back to the basic format of a early 360 game which perhaps would have been better received as a 'remastered' Crackdown 1, and a game that would never have worked on last gen consoles anyway.
I am not criticising the sentiment or opinion in this article - just to make that very clear. I do think though that publishing it on a Playstation based website was the wrong move and maybe should have opened up a discussion in the Xbox thread in the forums.
@Shellcore
The comment I replied to was specific about a reason to buy xbox. That point in particular is straightforward. Its the job of multiplaform sites and.even better, an xbox site. Not the topic (this topic in particular : to buy an xbox) for a PlayStation site. Although the discussion can happen in comments, nothing wrong with i t. Not point of an article we should expect.
The console wars are stupid. The war is over; it has already been won. Does the Xbox have Knack? Enough said.
I don’t think there was much doubt about this. Crackdown 3 really isn’t good, in fact it pales next to the first one IMO.
There’s a huge gap in quality and quantity of first party releases and throwing money at the problem won’t fix it, there needs to be a cultural change at XBox.
I’ve just finished Crackdown 3 yesterday and enjoyed the campaign but I do agree that the game should of been so much better after being in development for 5 years. I don’t think the game would of been that badly received if it had released when the Xbox One launched.
It’s other mode Wrecking Zone is absolutely rubbish and the only mode with it's long awaited and hyped “Cloud powered demolition” (I honestly almost laughed as I typed that) which isn’t featured in the campaign at all. It seems it was just put in there for the sake of it because it was promised and showcased in trailers and at E3. It doesn’t look the same as the campaign either, in Wrecking Zone the destructible buildings and the maps as a whole are covered neon lights with lines everywhere which doesn’t look appealing at all, it runs shockingly bad and I use Virgin Media’s fastest broadband package so I know there’s nothing wrong on my end. IMO the original Crackdown is a better game in every way, it’s also backward compatible and X enhanced with 4K, I’m just glad I only paid £2 for 2 months of Game Pass to play and finish CD3.
Also have to agree it was unnecessary to write this article based on CD3 and Xbox’s other exclusives which has nothing to do with PlayStation apart from being a competitor or going by this article, not being much of one. I agree the PS4 has more and better exclusives which is why I own a PS4 Pro but everybody knows PlayStation has more quality exclusives so to criticize Xbox One’s lack of quality exclusives seems a bit unprofessional, arrogant and it’s been said a few times, flame baiting (do you really really need those extra clicks?).
That Crackdown 3 and The Last Guardian comparison? Two completely different games, I get Liam was trying to compare the final quality of the games but I know which one I’d rather play and it doesn’t include a large mythological beast in it. It’s all down to preferences and opinions in the end.
@BAMozzy I have read some of your comments out of interest because I know you are very informed and play a lot of Xbox in addition to PlayStation. I always enjoy reading your take on things. And I completely respect your opinion as you are coming from a perspective where you enjoy your One X quite a bit, so I can’t invalidate your concerns and would never propose to.
But coming from a perspective of a person who doesn’t own an Xbox, the inclusion of this article does interest me as a PlayStation reader to see what is going on with the latest big Microsoft ouput and comparing the two companies strategies. There is not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way for each company to approach the market, and Gamepass is apparently setting an industry standard and so I’m curious about how game development is being affected by Gamepass since Sony will possible adopt some of the MS business model in the future. At the end of the day, it is a “Soapbox” article so it inherently is opinion based. The fact that the content of the article is kind of a look at Crackdown and MS trajectory through the lens of a PlayStation gamer is interesting to me. I agree that it opens up “console war” commenting, but I don’t see a problem with Soapbox/opinion/rant articles coming down. If they are respectful, then I quite enjoy them and I appreciate having a little subjectivity in the site from time to time to balance out the regurgitation of news and data that is posted. Again, this is my opinion and I am not a Xbox gamer so take it for what it’s worth. (I guess it’s kind of akin to similar social injustice complaints that are just impossible to invalidate unless a person is actually the subject of the prejudice, so I realize that I may be going out on a limb that I’m not qualified to be on) I do see plenty of criticism of Sony in their opinion articles as well, so I don’t feel the staff is being trite or condescending to the competition. If for example a Xbox site posted an article about how horribly limited PlayStation has become with their penchant for single player story driven action rpgs, then I’d say that’s a fair criticism, for example. Certainly we’ve seen this site pile on about censorship and cross-play for the last few months.
This article is unnecessary. While I agree PlayStation has better exclusives this is just stirring people up. Also The Last Guardian sucks, and they aren't even similar games. Not a great comparison.
I mean your evaluation isn't wrong. And you do have to wonder how many people daily were working on CD3 to receive such a barebones and mediocre experience. MS made it sound like it was all hands on deck with multiple studios (a big part of the problem imo) working simultaneously. Xbox One is easily my most dissapointing console probably ever. And i have 2!🤔 (S for cheap 4k player). I know some Nintendo faithful that felt burned by Wii U but imo that console was a 10 compared. At least Nintendo hammered out some quality entries in household names. And BotW.
@get2sammyb Jaffe is on record singing such praises as well. Wonder if MS is has too many chiefs and not enough Indians hawking around these dev teams....wait can i say that in 2019?
@Th3solution At the end of the day, I will defend anyone's right to express their opinions. I don't have to agree with that opinion or even the way they share that opinion. In this case its more the place in which this opinion was expressed. On a lot of the points, I do agree, some are irrelevant (Last Guardian for example) and others are factual too (60 on Metacritic). If this was a 'remaster' of Crackdown, the majority of complaints about this game would be negated as the biggest is that the game has not 'evolved' from the 2007 original, that other Open World sandbox games have moved the parameters on and this game is 'stuck' in the last gen Era.
Anyway, the point is that even though this is an 'opinion' piece, its also representing PushSquare. Its supposed to be a 'professional' site and focussed on Sony news. This site goes out of its way not to mention Xbox at all and, if you read any article about any Multi-platform release, you would think its 'just' coming to Playstation as they never once mention other platforms its releasing on.
I would have absolutely no issues with this opinion piece had it been written in the forums but published as an Article on PushSquare, a Playstation site, I think is the wrong place for it. I would say exactly the same if an Xbox/MS site had published a 'negative' piece about Sony/PS too so I am not taking sides. I would expect an article like this to be on IGN or even an Xbox brand site but on a Playstation site, I would expect more professionalism.
As far as 'comparisons' go, That is really the domain of the sites that cover both Sony and Microsoft. I think it's fair journalism to compare and contrast on a site aimed at covering gaming as a whole. I don't expect it from PushSquare in the same way I wouldn't expect this type of article on an Xbox brand site.
Its not necessarily the content, the sentiment or the opinion itself. As someone who games on Xbox, I can't argue that Crackdown 3 is a 'major' disappointment after all the promises that were made. For a Sony based site though to be calling out Microsoft on this though is not what I would expect from a professional journalist. To reiterate, had this opinion been written in the Xbox thread on this sites Forum, the appropriate place to express this Opinion, then I certainly wouldn't have any issues at all - at least not about the sentiment even if I do not agree with the LG comparison.
@BAMozzy wholeheartedly agree and I'm the same in that I spend most of my time with the X and coming back to PS4 for exclusives. Gamepass alone has given me access to games that I may never have bought as I don't have that much time but now can experience the entire Tomb Raider Trilogy or Hit man in and amongst their exclusives and for me is the best deal in gaming. Crackdown 3 has definitely been a bit of a mess and by all accounts the campaign was done a long time ago and perhaps should have launched by itself. I do think that Microsoft are already in the process of rectifying their recent issues with big games given how they have been purchasing several studios last year.
Overall I like all of my consoles whether it be Xbox, PS4 or Switch and there is enough fanboyism online without places like this openly criticising each other's games
Poor man's killzone shadow fall, atrocious. Scalebound might have been nice 😂
anyone that has there brand blinkers off for a second! knows Sony is killing MS in the games department, in my opinion, they have been all along.
a big reason is MS loyal fans will accept whatever they do even when it is bad they kiss bums still.
look at all the apologists just in this thread alone trying to twist it
@BAMozzy Fair enough. I can appreciate the point of view.
@BAMozzy I bought Cuphead from Steam.
Using Metacritic ratings as a measure for success is wrong: a game can rate 60% and still sell a huge number of copies, likewise a game rated 90% might still end-up selling just 20-50k copies. Metacritic is a reflection of 'taste', of a very specific type of gamer.
Microsoft's target has to be the PS5, not the PS4. It's too late for them to challenge the latter.
Microsoft have been expanding their combined PC-and-Xbox platform efforts, in this respect they have been much more successful than Sony's PC efforts. As a platform for joint gaming systems (PC, Xbox, ... other?), Microsoft could have an advantage in the future.
I don't really care about the Sony vs. Microsoft battle that much though, as I'm more of a PC gamer these days, and the majority of the console exclusives I care about are (or will be) available on PC as well (Forza, Yakuza, ...). Just as I can't stand the PC Masterrace bullcrap, I don't really care for this anti-x console behaviour.
MS is not trying to catch up in the current gen. They've already accepted defeat and right now are just buying their time preparing for the next one.
And one thing that i didn't like about this article was the attempt to downplay Phil Spencer's role in all of this. He became the Xbox boss after the initial release of XB1 and recently became the Exec VP of MS gaming. And imo he's done a great job as of now considering that his role is mostly doing damage control and preparing the brand for the next gen.
MS will be entering the race having 7(!) new dev studios under their management and some exceptional consumer-friendly features like Game Pass, BC, Play Anywhere and crossplay.
And PS journalists and fans, instead of patting themselves in the back celebrating how cool their console was last gen should be wondering what Sony is going to bring to the table as the major competitor. Because if they consider entering that race 'like a boss" with the mentality of "PS4 sold 100 mil" and 'because GoW and Spider-Man on PS4", i don't think that's gonna cut it for them and they'll probably have a similar situation that MS had with the XB1 at the beggining of this gen.
Just my 2 cents.
@Marcusi23 Fair enough, although my Internet was worse when OnLive was around. I used that; good service, very ahead of its time, and it was relatively stable. PS Now was noticeably worse years later, so I don't know what to tell you. Granted that put me off, and I've not used Now for several years, but most of the time, when one fails that first impression, you don't get a second chance.
Plus, Now features a download option similar to gamepass, so that's much better.
@Matroska Dude, there are multiple claims that goes against what you are saying about Switch sales. A simple google search ain't that hard. As far as with Pokémon Let's Go, you are only talking about ONE region. It's true that sales are at an all-time low, but if you look at worldwide sales, it's already at 10 million units. And this is a game that was RIDDLED with controversy. And dude, their biggest game of the year is only a remake? With Super Mario Maker 2, Animal Crossing(yes, that is a big franchise), and Pokémon Gen 8 all in the SAME YEAR? PLEASE tell me you're joking. And don't bring up the Wii U situation, because that console was basically DOA. Everything, INCLUDING their big first-party games had all time low sales compared to their predecessors. Do you see the same thing happening with the Switch? No. The Switch has literally been breaking records since the day it came out. Like I said earlier, a simple google search is all you have to do. And finally with the whole Fire Emblem Three Houses looking terrible and how hardly anyone is excitied for it. DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHINH YOU HEAR ON A GAMING FORUM. They said that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was not gonna sell. They said that no body cared about Kirby Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces, and Super Mario Party. They said that SSBU was just a port of SSB4 and that it wasn't going to move units because people that wanted the game, they all already have one. They said that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looked like anime-weebo garbage and that this was gonna sell worse than Xenoblade Chronicles X. Look how that all turned out. They all(well, except for Pokémon Let's Go) had one of the highest sales in their respective franchises. And if a game like Yoshi's Crafted World(even though it hasn't came out yet), and Kirby Star Allies, two games that are part of a more niche crowd than Fire Emblem, can have big sales within their series, so can Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
P.S: I hope you don't take this comment too personally. I'm only just bringing in facts that seems to get ignored most of the time. You don't seem like the type of person to troll so I hope we get along.
@Al_Godoy
Agree , ps4 and switch is best combo
i don't think it's proof they have to "catch up" but i do think it shows that this type of game just isn't that important to MS anymore
I know I'm late to this comments section, but I think if an Xbox site published an article like this, then all four of its readers would be very disappointed
@Cpt_Price Why do you make things personal in every attack you’ve made on me lately? Give it a rest buddy and move on.
Crackdown 3 is really fun. I'd rather play that than another behind the shoulder 3rd person action narrative game that Sony pumps out. Where is the variety at? At least Xbox has different genres with their exclusives. And no the PSVR does not have as good of a library as the Xbox One.
I traded my XBOX One in last year for a PS4 since the only exclusives I played on it were the Forza games... which I can now just play on my laptop (got a laptop with a 1050 for video editing and game development a while back, just a bonus being able to play Forza on it). Microsoft really needs to make use of the other IP's they own, like Fable, Banjo-Kazooie, and Conker. I'd even love to see another Perfect Dark that focuses on local multiplayer!
@waluigifan1 LOL Good one
Crackdown 3 is straight trash.
@Krest_arisen The X1 is notably less powerful than the PS4. The X may be more powerful than the Pro, but all the games need to run in the lowest common demonitor, which means PS still has an advantage when it comes to power and what they can do with their games on a gameplay level.
C'mon people. You didn't even hit 200 comments yet, don't stop now.
Kidding of course.
Might I add,
While I agree with the article, I think too many users are not mature enough for opinions...
@LiamCroft Don't listen to all those salty Xbone fans this has been one of the best articles in a long time, they are only defending the Xbox with the claim that Xbone X is the best experience with 4K and with gamepass but they don't mention how it came out like a year ago so it's basically a new gen console obviously it needed to be more powerful not only that it's also more expensive and I agree that gamepass sounds good but with time it might hurt developers in the long run, and they don't wanna feel like they waisted money on their new door stopper X
Gg guys you people clowned entire xbox community in one article lmao.
The salt in this comment section,Journalistic integrity, flaming article blah blah.
And oh all of you that say you won't come to the site anymore please leave as fast as you can lol...but we all know you will be back and the thing that eats you the most is that no one want's to read your novel lenght comments anymore.
@waluigifan1 Complaining that Sony of all companies doesn't have variety?
Good one.
Microsoft have been wanting what Steam have a digital store front that sells games and they added one bonus, buy it on Xbox 1 and get it free for pc on your Windows 10 machine. They've then been wanting to copy off Apple with its have a Windows PC and merge Xbox and other hardware into the frame. And with the attitude it's bit them in the backside because Xbox fans just wanted one thing for this gen a new more powerful system to play great games, Bill Gates for years wanted MS to be the forefront in a media front home but they didn't capitalise on that.
They did it with the XB1 and the E3 it announced it at along with the price destroyed them, and they had to go back to the drawing board and release X1X which I have always said was the Xbox for the gen all a long. The original was a undercut flop of a machine made or multimedia playback and with a slightly upgraded 360 system inside it should have never been this gens offering.
@BAMozzy Since you care about playing the best version of console games, does that mean you played every third party game on PS4 from 2013-2017? After all, all third party games ran better on PS4 during that time (and still do when compared to the base Xbox One). Games ran on X1 at 720-900p, while they ran at 1080p on PS4. In some cases they also had more graphical details, and ran at a better framerate as well. So since you care about the best console version and you're not a hypocrite, you were almost strictly a PS4 gamer during the first 4 years of this gen, right? 😇
@Starburst Only a dudebro with no taste would say The Last Guardian sucked. That is if they played it. You likely haven't touched it. Either way it has a 82 on Metacritic, and won a few game of the year awards (most notably from Easy Allies), so your fanboi opinion doesn't square with what most who have played it think about it.
I played Crackdown on the Atari ST, actually managed to finish it, was great fun. Even more so in spilt screen co-op.
@JoeBlogs precisely, the PS1, PS2, Nintendo Wii are just a few examples of that, they were all the weaker systems and yet were still all the best selling of their generations
it's always been about the games not the power
@DreamerAbe86 In quite a few cases - yes I did. There were some that I bought on Xbox initially because of them having the rights (CoD) and having a number of friends (clan) and most importantly, my Son that were also on Xbox so it made more sense to buy on that platform. I also had the Season Pass for Ghosts on 360 which automatically transferred to XB1 and had a year of Gold left so it made more sense to buy an XB1 first as it worked out much cheaper. To get everything - inc the Season Pass and PS+, to match the bundle of XB1 w Kinect and 4 games I got, would have cost me over £200 more. £80 of that being PS+ and Season Pass. As such, I did get a few more XB1 games before I got my PS4.
I had also moved into a new house after separating from my wife a few months before both PS4 and XB1 launched. I didn't have the money to spend on gaming at all as I had to get things like a new bed, a Washing Machine, cooker, Wardrobe etc etc. The fact that I could get an XB1 with 4 games (inc CoD Ghosts that I had a Season Pass for) and not need to buy anything more was a major reason I bought XB1 first - a month before Titanfall released.
After I bought my PS4 - around 8-12months after buying the Xbox, all SP games were bought for PS4 and a lot of MP too. I do have some games on both systems - Batman:AK, Witcher 3, Destiny, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Some of that was because I pre-ordered whilst I only had my Xbox but with the delays to the release dates, by the time they did release, I had a PS4. It was that extra graphical fidelity that made me buy them for PS4. Rise obviously came out a year earlier on Xbox and so it made sense to buy on that first.
When Sony ended up with CoD, I switched to buying it on PS4. The majority of games I bought were for PS4 with the odd 1 or 2 multi-platform game bought on Xbox - primarily to play with my Son who is on Xbox only and its one way we keep in touch and do things together - that is much more important than dropping down to 900p - and if the games were 'great', I would also buy them on PS4 too.
When the Pro released, the only game(s) played on Xbox were just Gears 4 if I remember correctly (although I probably beat the campaign before the Pro launched) and Destiny with my Son on Xbox, 90+% of my gaming was purely on PS4 Pro for the year. I bought the Gears Editions Xbox Slim and barely played on it - at most 150hrs (Gears 4 campaign and a few hours here and there playing Destiny with my Son)
Actually reminds me, I must go back and finish Batman on Xbox - I don't think I have done more than a mission or two because the difference in visual quality was certainly noticeably lower. I finished off the Witcher 3 on the X - after completing the game and DLC on PS4 before the Pro launched.
Unless my Son (who is far more important) was likely to be buying a game or for MP/co-op friends, then predominantly I bought and played mostly on PS4. It wasn't my 'first' console this gen as it would have been much more expensive for me to initially purchase and be online too. Also would have limited my opportunity to keep in touch and play with my Son which was a major consideration. However, as soon as I did get my PS4, a large majority of my games were bought and played on that system. Considering I bought it after my XB1 that came with 4 games to start with, by the time I bought my X, I actually had more PS4 games (that didn't come with any games when I bought it) on my shelf than Xbox. I am not going to count any free games from Gold or PS+ (X wins that easily) just the physical games I bought. Even with that head start and coming with 4 games too,my PS4 library was 'bigger' which should tell you that I favoured the PS4 for the 2.5 - 3yrs that I owned both systems. The year the Pro was out, the only Xbox game I bought was Forza Motorsport 7 in readiness for the X and since the X came out, I finished off Horizon:ZD DLC, got the Platinum in GoW in 4/5days and 'tried' to enjoy Spider-Man for a few hours and will be playing Days Gone next.
Incidentally, not all third party games were 'better' on PS4. Destiny was pretty much the same on both (both 1080/30 after MS dropped Kinect and let Devs use that extra bit to boost Destiny up to 1080p) and MUCH better online on Xbox. Destiny LFG was so much better for Xbox users as they could message people direct from the PC and invite people direct from Xbox - the big advantage of both PC and Xbox being Windows. Also online was better, smoother and more consistent too. I know Sony have upped their online experience - certainly since PS3 days, but its still a bit behind MS's online - that is also the findings of independent research too so not everything was 'better' on PS4 between 2013-2017.
In the first year or so, the Xbox did manage parity on a few games - at least on resolution if not on graphical settings - Wolfenstein was 1080p on Xbox too. The only 720p game was Battlefield 4 but that was only 900p on PS4 - better I know but still a 900p game - the same resolution as CoD Ghosts on Xbox One. The majority of XB1 games were 900p-1080p although 900p was certainly more common. The fact that now we are seeing the XB1 having far more 720-900p games and the PS4 spending more time around 900p shows that the games are getting too complex for these consoles and indicative of the need to replace with newer generation hardware. Its not like 'last' gen when it took devs a few years to understand the complexity of the hardware and start to use it to their advantage, this gen the knew exactly how to get the best as it was far more familiar to them.
Now we are seeing a drop in the visual quality - that doesn't mean that the games are looking worse as such just that they are having to reduce the resolution to keep the game running at a reasonable frame rate. The drop in visual quality is that you are losing 25% or more of the image by reducing its size and then having to upscale that to fit the screen so its a 'drop' in Visual Quality even if the quality of the animations, environments etc are actually better - its that 'better' that the Console can only manage to render it as a smaller image because it doesn't have time to render the full image.
You can't count Exclusives either because a Developer can change aspects of the design (like put in a wall or tree or cliff face for example) where ever they want to reduce the demands on the GPU (by reducing visible draw distance of objects, reduce enemy count so less to calculate/draw, change where enemies can be located etc) during the development specifically to hit a certain target - like 1080p or 60fps.
Forza Motorsport for example runs at 1080p and 60fps on XB1 but you can't use that as indicative of the general game performance and visual quality of that console. The majority of the multi-platform releases now are indicative of a severely underpowered and incapable of delivering the full HD gaming experience let alone the UHD era we are well and truly in now. 4k TV's were available in 2014 so if a console can't manage to do full HD in 2019, that's ridiculous. That would be like the 360/PS3 consoles being 360-540p and expected to last through the first 6-7yrs of the HD era. The PS3 Pro being mostly 540-720p native and the 360X being native 720-1080p to try and help the base consoles get through a reasonable life cycle.
@Fight_Sora_Fight It's not really having a negative effect on the games they make. Forza horizon 4 is pretty great and that was the last Xbox exclusive until now Crackdown 3 was never going to be a good game, I don't know why anyone thought otherwise especially given the development cycle.
@FullbringIchigo As I have said before, Power does matter - unless there is a Unique Selling Point to attract a wider demographic. The examples you have used are examples of consoles that had a Unique Selling Point. The Wii had motion controls which gave it a much wider target audience - all those people that were not 'gamers' and found normal controllers too complex could buy a Wii. The old grannies/grandads could get a bit of movement and play some 'wii sports'. All those people jumping on the 'fitness' boom could buy a Wii and check their progress before the wrist based fitness trackers came. It was a 'good' party console for dance games and then of courses we had all the guitar hero type games as well. Unique selling point that appealed to a wide demographic.
That's also why the PS1 was such a success - it had a Unique Selling point and aimed at a 'wide demographic' group. The N64 was great but perhaps not aimed at the 18-30's like the Playstation was. The PS1 was in clubs and targetted primarily at the audience with the most free cash to spend on leisure activities. Those under 18 would often be reliant on parents to buy them consoles and games for Christmas/Birthdays and most thought of Nintendo as the more kiddy console. Segas was just a mess. The PS2 had the advantage of the fanbase and reputation from the predecessor. That and the fact it also played DVD's, was Backwards Compatible with the PS1 and launched a year before Microsoft - an unknown in terms console manufacturing - came out. Despite having Halo for example, there were a lot of scepticism about the Xbox and Microsoft as a 'serious' console manufacturer - especially up against the 'giants' of Nintendo and Sega - with Sony now established, was their room for Microsoft too? We know now of course but at the time it was an unknown and the Gamecube looked kind of childish with odd controllers compared to a much more 'adult' design of the PS2.
Its not difficult to understand why these consoles, whether they were 'weaker' (the PS1 had some big advantages over the 62bit cartridge based N64) or not. The Switch has its 'unique selling point' too and its more powerful than ANY other handheld gaming console and its unique selling point is that it can be 'docked' and used as a 'home' console too. That USP is a major contributor to its success. If it had been equally as powerful but only a home console replacement for the WiiU, do you honestly believe that it would have sold as well as it has? You can blame E3 2013 as much as you like for MS's lack of sales but the power difference was a much bigger concern for people.
If you think of the difference in 'just' the vertical aspect, 1080p down to 900p isn't much - just a 180p, on the vertical aspect its the difference of 1920 to 1600 - 'that's only 320 pixels so not 'much'. However if you calculate the number of pixels that actually separates 1080p (2073600 pixels) and 900p (1440000) is 633600pixels - that's a drop of nearly a third. That's quite a big drop.
If you want to talk about GPU difference - 1.84Tflops of the PS4 isn't that much more than 1.31Tflops, its only 0.53Tflops, its not exactly a big number unless we change the units to the same as the PS3/360 GPU's were often quoted and then that difference is 530Gflops. Maybe still sounds like its not a lot really - but the 360's GPU was 240Gflops and the PS3 was 230Gflops - so even if you combined both of the last gen consoles GPU's together, added that to the XB1, its still not as powerful from a computational standpoint as the OG XB1. It would just beat the PS4 if you bolted both a PS3 and 360's GPU's to the XB1Slim.
The gap is sill bigger than the Switch is too - if you could combine a Switch with the OG XB1 - If it was docked, using FP32 instructions, it wouldn't be enough to bring the XB1's GPU up to the PS4's GPU - that's how 'big' a power difference the PS4 has over the Base XB1. Often, the Switch GPU can be quoted as FP16 instruction which doubles the amount of calculations a GPU can handle compared to FP32 which the XB1 and PS4 use. As such, the GPU can be up to 1TF (although its not clocked that fast - even docked) in FP16 which would be just 500Gflops in FP32. Therefore, its still not enough to bring the XB1 up to the same spec as the PS4's GPU.
Obviously the RAM is another area that the PS4 dominates the XB1 over but the CPU is a bit faster on the XB1 - 1.75Ghz compared to the PS4's 1.6Ghz.
Maybe not everyone is fully aware of how much of a power deficit the XB1 has, maybe the 'small' number differences make it seem like a 'small' difference - 180p compared to 633600pixel difference (1080p to 900p), Maybe the 1.84 compared to 1.31 seems like a 'small' difference, that 0.53tflops is tiny but its 530Gflops which is MORE than a Switch, more than both a PS3 and XB360 combined. Its not a 'small' difference at all, When the Nintendo Switch, the newest console, isn't as powerful as the difference between an XB1 an PS4, that can hardly be insignificant and not have an impact on gamers choice!!
@BAMozzy thing is i have worked in game stores and the average consumer just don't care which one is the most powerful or about terraflops and yes back in the day when consoles had unique selling point that would factor in to some people decisions but when it comes to modern consoles especially the PS4 and XB1 as they both do the same things and have very little differences, they look at other factors and that includes the price and the games, Switch players don't care that it's not as powerful as the PS4 or XB1 they are just happy to have great games to play same as most console gamers don't care that most P.C's are more powerful than their system because they just want to play games
comparing the power of systems is the manufactures way of having a virtual **** measuring contest, it's a "mine is better than yours" mentality
and as for gamers the only ones who really care about how powerful it is are either tech heads, fanboys or people trying to justify the reason they spent so much money on a system but most just want to play games and when someone comes into a shop looking for a console to buy and they see 2 consoles that play most of the same games they don't care if one is labeled "The Worlds most powerful console" all they see is that it's £200 more expensive than the others that play the same games especially as 4K isn't that wide spread just yet so most don't even care about that either, it's why both the standard PS4 and XB1s still out sell their more powerful counterparts
@BAMozzy I play in base PS4 so there goes one reason and i dont like racing games that are not like Burnout. 😁
Plus i like the PS exclusive games if i have to leave the Sony camp i will get a Nintendo console.
@DreamerAbe86 I absolutely played it, got it day 1. It was a not good. You can have your opinion and i can have mine. And my point still stands that these games arent comparable. I never said crackdown was a good game, and good lord i am not a fanboy of Microsoft, or any other gaming company for that matter "dudebro".
@Starburst So you just lack taste. Sad!
@DreamerAbe86 Or you just have bad taste, who knows?
@Starburst Nah, you lack taste, boyo. All the awards the game was nominated for and won weren't for nothing. Your opinion is just bad and you should feel bad.
You also should really remove that profile pic of BotW Link. You ain't fooling anyone. You're obviously an ADHD-addled brodude gamer who still mostly plays CoD. Sad!
Well, you couldn't have gone with a more flamebaitey title. Are we really THIS insecure, Pushsquare...?
@DreamerAbe86 Your stupidity astounds me sir. I certainly wouldn't feel bad for not liking a game, and especially one with a clearly cancerous fan base. You have yourself a good day now, keepin trollin on. (Also, most COD games have a higher meta score then TLG)
@waluigifan1 If you're going to troll, can you at least try a bit harder? It really does get old.
@naruball Right? If anything, Xbox does the same multiplayer games with the same third person narrative. Sony has done a far better job this gen with exclusives. Don't know why people get so upset that their plastic of choice just isn't up to par.
@InsertUsername Not trolling. I don't like the style of game Uncharted is. Most of Sony's 1st party titles play like uncharted. Therefore I would rather play Crackdown 3 then something like Days Gone.
@waluigifan1
naruball's comment stands perfectly to any comments relating to "not enough variety." Sorry man. Just from your first comment on this opinion piece, it's easy to tell you're simply triggered over what was said. I've also seen enough of your comments on here that are similar in nature, so I think I'll do us both a favor and put you on ignore. Good luck.
@Starburst than*
