Happy birthday, God of War! Sony Santa Monica's masterpiece is one year old today, originally releasing on the 20th April, 2018. The title was met with universal praise, farming countless 10/10 review scores, and walking away with dozens of Game of the Year awards. As far as we're concerned, it remains one of the PlayStation 4's very best.
But opinions can change -- especially after 12 months have passed. And so we're here to ask whether you still think God of War is up there with the greatest games of this console generation. Vote in our polls, and then give us your honest thoughts in the comments section below.

Love the game and its definitely up there as one of the gems of this generation and arguably the best "Zelda" game I've ever played. By which I mean it takes the best elements of that type of game as to how the world opens up with a nice mixture of exploration a bit of loot and light rpg mechanics. Added to this though is a great story and stunning artistic direction with some of the very best combat available in any game ever made. I liked previous entries in the series but wouldn't say that I was a huge fan but now I'll very much be looking forward to his next adventure.
I wouldn't score many games I've played over the years a 10 but this is definitely one of them and would argue that this is as important a game to PS4 as a Mario 64 or Ocarina of time was to the N64
I just finished the story mode the other day. Really enjoyed it Doing the other stuff now which I am not enjoying much because those Valkyries are hard :-/ Well I got to the final one and really not looking forward to taking it on + that Mist world(can't spell it's name) is confusing to :-/ Even tho I don't have to do those really. See how it goes.
Nope. Still awesome.
Best PS4 game for me which finally took Bloodbornes crown after all that time. 10/10
Superb and can’t wait for GoW2 on PS5!
I played through it entirely at release and thought it was one of the best videogame experiences I've ever had. I haven't replayed it fully yet but a couple of months ago I did go through it up to and including the first fight against the Stranger (one of the best fights ever), and its still just as phenomenal as it was a year ago.
My opinion of the older titles was never that high so to think that a GoW game rates this highly for me is such a surprise. Its just that brilliant.

It's still an outstanding 10 game for me. The graphics, the design of every single thing is just beautiful. It's only sad we have to compare it to RDR2 because it released the same year, and makes me sound like I dislike it. They are 2 different games but overall I still maintain RDR2 is better and it's going to stand the test of time on the sales charts evidently for a long while.
Would you recommend it to someone that didn’t enjoy GoW III?
I want to give it 11/10.
I have shown it to my friends and I think the pure vision of the game is outstanding and makes it probably the best PS4 exclusive. Or at least close to Bloodborne. Just that axe recall makes it awesome.
@Ortneoc i would.
it's a new story so you can follow everything without playing the others. and you will enjoy the world and gameplay aswell since that is also all new.
however some emotional scenes will work better if you have played some of the previous games. (more relatable).
best game ever word up son
grand theft auto.god of war.syphon filter.ratchet and clank.metal slugs.resistance.sly Cooper .bioshock.infamous.are some of my favorite franchise ever..god of war is on another level.word up son
My only problem with the game was the sequel-baiting. Part way through you find a hub that shows you all the possible realms, a handful of which you can visit to reach your goal for convent reasons.
Pretty sure the sequels will be more of the same & I simply won’t care enough to stay to the end.
Ok, I know it's weird but :
It should have been a new franchise (like Horizon : Zero Dawn) and then I wouldn't have criticized it that much. If your name is "God of War", you come with expectations!
@Jriibz
I was looking for the option 'not giving a score because there's no need' but couldn't find it.
Why would people rate it with a score?
My feelings haven't changed in the year since I got my Platinum Trophy. U still think its a 'great' game but not a 10/10 game. It has aspects that I don't think are 'great' but that's my opinion - others are perfectly entitled to theirs too - whether it agrees with mine or not!
11/10, game of the generation. So ready for the next one!
There's not a single aspect of this game that I thought was bad. Visuals, audio, gameplay; both exploration and combat, story, acting, runtime...
it's not my favorite game ever but it did everything really well.
Just before reading this article I just booted the game back up for the first time since last year. Time for another play through and then to go for the platinum. Still probably the best single player game I’ve played
Not commented on here for a while as been so busy lately so just been binge reading the pushsquare articles once every week instead, but I need to say I love the "questions must be axed" pun! 😂 As for the poll then I was blown away by the game last April, and if anything then now I have nostalgia glasses on as well, so am even more fond of the game retrospectively (definitely want to new game plus it at some point - probably just before the inevitable sequel releases). Was actually just waxing lyrical with my brother the other night about what a full package of a game it was...also how annoying Sigrun was! 😉
Speaking of replaying games, I cannot wait to replay TLOU when we have a solid release date for the second game!
Horizon was better imo.for me this generation is 1.bloodborne 2.Horizon 3. GoW
Very impressive product but I couldn't get in to it. Maybe I'll try it again one day but I just don't think it's for me.
I haven't, and most likely won't, play it. After seeing gameplay footage, I realised someone was fighting an enemy...that I couldn't see because it blended with the background, and no one I have asked has revealed a colour blind mode exists, much like with Horizon Zero Dawn.
Yet another PS exclusive I want to play, but can't. Unless I swing my arms in a blind rage, but that's what God of War used to be.
@Octane this flirting has to stop bro
It is a 9 for me. The boss battles and gore could have been better.
The game had gore, but it being colorful toned it down for me. It was still really enjoyable though. Those werewolf kills were great though.
I'm still playing through it, having started it recently after getting it for Christmas and never having played a GoW game before.
I'm enjoying it a lot, and it's certainly a very good game, but... for me personally, so far it's not the masterpiece many claim. But then I've only just entered Helheim, so I gather there's still plenty of time for it to change my mind.
@Jriibz
It's very different though. Like I know some people would rate movies too but I don't see the point either. Like oh I liked a movie, I rate it 8.75/10. It's so silly. I get what reviewers try to do though. Five stars may make more sense but even then whatever . Oh well haha
Not really. It's a good game, but it's overhyped and overrated by everyone and their moms.
Great game but I was a bit disappointed by the small amount of boss battles. I'm hoping we get some epic Battles in the sequel
Belter of a game but its insanely hard to say its the best of this generation when you have likes of Infamous in there too and R&C
Footage of this game got me to try the whole series before playing this one, and when I did get to this game, it was so awesome knowing the whole backstory. It's an amazing game!
I still need to play God of War PS4, but definitely see why it got so many 10/10 scores.
Nope. Still an overrated Sony TPCA much like Horizon was 2 years ago.
The drudgery of Alfheim, the repetitive sections and troll fights, plus the writing becoming pretty terrible towards the end in regards to BOY! let it down for me. About 70% of it is a 10/10, the rest is like a 7/10. I think that averages to 9.1/10 over all, which is still amazing.
My thought is still the same, it’s a game of the generations for me with the best melee fighting systems for 3rd person games
I hate my backlog Horizon Zero Dawn was my favorite game and i waited so long too play.
@Olmaz Sorry but the last God of War was dissapointing on the PS3. In the fantastic game GOW 3 i really disliked Kratos in the end he was horrible. What he did Poseidon's Princess that was really horrible.
@Flaming_Kaiser Well Kratos being horrible was exactly the point : focused on one thing, putting everything else aside... How many games are there where you can play a "bad" and relatable character? But the new Kratos is like so many others : conflicted, family issues, going for redemption...
As for the last PS3 GOW game, I guess you are talking about Ascension, well I just finished replaying it and, frankly, it holds up! The fights and key moments are more epic than most of the same kind of moments in the new GOW (I mean, did you forget about the gigantic statue of Apollo that you restore piece by piece while being on and in it??). Its only problem was a lack of urgency and importance in the story, especially after GOW3...
@Olmaz Lets agree to disagree on a bad relatable character i thought he was a monster. Im a little older maybe thats it i loved it that he more human. Nothing wrong with your opinion by the way. 😁
And i agree GOW 3 was insane i just hated Kratos in the end and the last one on the PS3 was so dissapointing for me.
@Flaming_Kaiser Yeah, sorry if I sounded aggressive, I was just being passionate because I love the series, to each his own opinion of course..
I really loved the way Kratos was before, it was different from the other heroes, and it made the mindless, dumb but absolutely epic fun of the older games possible. Now when you fight an giant monster or a god, you have to find a way to get that damn kid out of the way! I still really believe that as a new franchise, it would have worked better for me...
As a side note, the choice of Christopher Judge as Kratos was terrible for a Stargate SG-1 fan like me... I just couldn't get past the Teal'c flashbacks!
As for getting older... I feel you, I played the original GOW when it came out on PS2 and I was already not a teen anymore but I still want my mindnumbing action games with sex and violence!
@Royalblues I'm the same, and have never played the previous titles. But I wouldn't really class this as a fighting game.
There are third-person shooters, and there's Uncharted - which is an action/adventure with shooting.
Similarly, this isn't really a fighting game, but an action/adventure with melee combat.
I'm currently playing through the game for the first time and I'm utterly engrossed. This is my first GOW game and I'm definitely thinking of playing the previous entries after this although I am aware they are pretty different gameplay and story wise. Very excited to see what's coming up.
I think it is very good (better than I thought it would be) and look forward to the sequel, but also think it's somewhat overrated. Other than visuals, I can't think of anything this game really does to make it stand out as much as people would have you believe.
GOW, HZD and Nier Automata are head and shoulders above everything else this generation. All beautiful.
@Royalblues Indeed you did! For some reason my brain put a "not" in there when I read it. Apologies!
@Olmaz Nothing wrong with having a passion for your favorite games. 😃 👍
It's not great, but I don't think it's overrated either, there should be an 'meh' option in-between these two choices in your listing. I liked many of the things the game had to offer but did not enjoy the combat at all, which is an important thing to enjoy in an action game. I'm not really into this Bloodborne/Dark Souls type combat. I also don't think the storyline was much interesting. Kids as characters in games usually become annoying rather quickly. These things made it impossible for me to continue playing the game.
Fantastic game, but not the best in recent years. I preferred Breath of the Wild, HZD and Nier:Automata.
I replayed GoW just a few weeks ago, having bought it and completed it within the first month of release. It was just how I remember it the first time round, just awesome.
I then downloaded GoW 3 remastered, which was given away with PS Plus some months ago, and just can't believe how completely different they are. I'm not sure I would have readily jumped into GoW if I'd have played the originals first so almost glad that I started where I did. Needless to say I didn't even get through the first level of GoW 3 before I binned it.
