Re: Naoki Yoshida Is Not a Fan of the Term 'JRPG'

ShadowofSparta

@NEStalgia Don’t think it’s a weird take at all, can understand where he’s coming from. When they developed the games, they thought they were developing RPGs. Then they hear that actually, their RPGs are not treated like other RPGs, they’re treated like their own thing, JRPGs. But from their perspective, they didn’t see why it should be treated differently. Anyone who has ever felt otherised will understand, when you think you’re just taking part with everyone but then someone picks you out to feel different. There’s no ill intent behind it and I don’t think he’s suggesting that people were discriminating against them, he’s basically explaining how the term initially felt otherising to developers. Perfectly reasonable take if you get their perspective.

Re: Side Quests in Hogwarts Legacy Can Be Tackled in Non-Linear Order, Over 100 in Total

PushSquare have clearly said they’re looking forward to this. I’m not, but the state of this comment section looking for a reason to be mad is quite a thing. Literally no one is telling you not to be excited for this in this comment section yet most of the comments are about that. Also, everything is political, you can’t avoid it so seems silly to harp on about keeping it out of games.

Re: Dark Envoy Is a Classic CRPG Adventure Coming to Console in 2023

Yes yes yes, my body has been ready for this wave for years. Loving all these CRPGs recently. We get enough output of games in other genres, some of us crave these. Looking forward to this, though would like a look at the dialogue system since the snippet they showed of that binary decision in the trailer raises a few questions about the writing.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Director Acknowledges Feedback, 'We Still Have a Long Way to Go'

@Darude84 Why does it have to go from one extreme to the other? Quite frankly if you think the game has technical issues, don’t publish a review score until it’s resolved. You can still review a game without a score (SkillUp does it all the time and his reviews are fantastic), there’s nothing wrong with that (didn’t push square do that for Cyberpunk?). But games getting an 8 out of 10, given that adhering to scoring means you have some standard of what an 8 out of 10 is, seems ridiculous if you compare it to other 8 out of 10s without performance issues. They’re arbitrary until they’re not.

@Luigia Agile way of MVP releases works for most software but I think video games need to be treated differently. The impact of releasing an unfinished product is far more drastic than say releasing an online shopping experience without a cart. Its often not just about cut content, but genuine performance and technical issues that hamper the base experience (i.e non-functional requirements not realised). It’s an interesting one to think about, I may need to spend more time on it but feel like it’s worth an essay in itself. If anyone on this site is willing, it would be an interesting one to ponder.

@stefan771 He’s one of the very few actual journalists in our industry. It’s not all about leaks, but he’s fairly comprehensive in his deep dives and I think does his part in helping out those on the ground floor of development get their voices heard. He’s exposed a lot of horrible industry practices. We should be thankful to have him, as much as I may disagree with some of his takes.

Re: Poll: Will You Pay the PSVR2 Launch Price?

ShadowofSparta

It worth it at all until there’s a decent library or some truly outstanding/revolutionary games at launch. Otherwise you’ll use it a bit to start of with, then it gradually fade into the background until something good comes along.

Re: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Enhanced Edition (PS4) - A Roleplaying Renaissance

@sentiententity I do wish there were more games with a strong RPG focus and a good narrative, but I do think you’d lose something converting this into an action RPG for instance. All the dice rolls, modifiers, feats etc seem like they’d be difficult to pull off if it wasn’t more turn based and strategic. There’s a whole base to the build crafting etc that would look quite different I guess. Ideally we’d have lots of both types of games.
