This year holds some promise for the return of racing games that do something a little different from the norm, and we're more than ready for it.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer is first off the starting line, coming to PS5 on 25th February, and it has a brilliantly old school presence in this latest gameplay trailer:
Everything from the visuals to the music to the heavily customised vehicles just screams "PS2 game circa 2001", and we mean that in the most complimentary way.
It feels fresh and exciting in a time when the racing genre has become fairly samey.

Of course, that old school energy is no accident. The developer is Genki, the same studio behind the whole Tokyo Xtreme Racer series, which stretches back to the mid-90s.
It's brought the franchise back for modern times but kept much of what fans love about the older games. After a stint in early access on PC, this series revival is just a few weeks away on PS5, and it's unapologetically its own thing.
We're excited to hop into the driver's seat in February, but what do you think? Tell us in the comments section below.

I have the PC version. It was a "cheaper" release while it was early access. It is an enjoyable arcade racer in my opinion.
I’m looking forward to this and I’m excited for the resurgence of arcade racers.
All we need now is a new Ridge Racer in the vein of the early ones with a massive graphical overhaul. I’d buy that all day.
This does look pretty awesome. I know John Linneman from Digital Foundry must be excited for it, he did a lengthy retrospective of the older titles in a video. $100 says he mispronounces the word basically as “basely” at least 5 times when he inevitably covers this game.
Music is banging, gameplay seems fun, cars look a bit light and floaty though. The original Tokyo Extreme Racer was one of the classics.
Getting some Need for Speed Underground vibes. Been waiting for a game like that for eternity.
I loved this game on the pS2 and Dreamcast. Definitely dipping in for another go
