Set to release on PS5 and PS4 later this month, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is DOOM-style 'boomer' shooter — and it actually looks like it could be really good, judging by this new gameplay trailer. The title's nailed those old school graphics, so here's hoping that the gunplay is as slick and satisfying as it appears.
"Play a battle-hardened Space Marine on a perilous mission across the galaxy, as they battle against the Chaos Space Marines and daemons of Chaos," reads the official description. Your arsenal consists of guns that spit comically oversized bullets and a chainsword. You don't really need to know much more than that, do you?

The story seems good
For the Emperor!
Not sure about this one at all but it is intriguing having a first person shooter that reminds me of the old Sierra and Lucas Arts point and click adventures!
I am, definitely, middle-aged and perhaps that's why I don't see the point of mimicking the crap look of games from decades ago.
Looks awesome. 😁👍
Thought this was going to be about the new game coming this year. Disappointed. We haven’t seen anything since Game Awards
I love Warhammer 40K and grew up playing the original Doom games, so I am all for this. I hope the game is great!
I’ll be giving this a whirl
Can't wait for this. Already preordered last month. Space Marine 2 and Spidey2 my most hyped games for this year. Really hoping Space Marine 2 is released finished and ends up super fun to blast through just like the first is. Don't care if Space Marine 2 gets delayed to late 2024 if needs be
I know it won't happen, as I'm sure it didn't do well, but I would love a sequel to 40K Hired Gun- Had a really great time with it. I've had Cultic sitting in my Steam Cart for a while now- Boomer shooters are fun for an hour or two, but I grew up during Dooms heyday, I've had my fill
I smell heresy
If the gameplay turns out to be even half as good as its utterly gorgeous art style, Boltgun might end up being a bit of a hidden PSN gem.
Looks good, I hope runs decent on Switch as would be a good portable game.
That looks great.
It's a personal preference thing but I have always loved the look and feel of 90s fps games and I am all for the "boomer shooter" (not a fan of that name) gameplay revival. It's takes a lot of effort to recreate the look of that era while making it still modern.
Little cringe to see a corporation like sony use the term 'boomer shooter' but the game itsef looks great
@deadfred77 I’m 38 and personally love it. The art style brings me back to my childhood playing these style games. I certainly don’t want every game to look and feel like this but I enjoy the occasional one, like this or Proteus. The focus on hyper realism gets a little old to me, so I like that there’s studios that mix it up.
I hope there's a HFR mode. Bummer that you don't play as a Battle Sister, it'd have been a perfect fit for this game
GOTY! Seriously, this is the best it's going to get in 2023!
@CallMeDuraSouka i really enjoyed hired gun too even though it got rubbished in the review on this very site..it reminded me of the duke nukem games..
Boomer shooter doesn’t even make sense. Boomers were born from 1946-1964… it’s more like a Gen X shooter.
That being said this game looks awesome.
It's because in todays internet lingo "Boomer" is basically shorthand for anything that is roughly more than 20 years old. I don't get it either but knowing that the PS2 is now considered retro makes me feel old as hell and I'm not even 30 yet.
@PegasusActual93 it’s annoying cuz it’s like a 25-30 year difference. A boomer shooter would be more like Asteroids remake 🤣
@deadfred77 Indeed - I played Doom/2 for many a late night on my mates offices networked 486s (was it 386s?) and whilst it was a blast, I have been glad for ever upgrade since of the genre. Going back might be “cool” with the youngsters (I.e anyone under 50) but personally it just feels lazy. I mean let’s be honest - GPT could probably knock out a doom clone using old shareware doom builder software in a day..
What I really want to see is a fully realised WH40k AAA MMO open universe game where hundreds of people play in massive battles. That’s the tech evolution I expected to see by 2023, not a Doom clone..
Apologies for the rant! 😇
I was burnt by Hired Gun which was absolutely rubbish, I had it preordered (never again) and will now just wait. Looks good & I want to get it but I said that last time!!
@deadfred77 Spot on!
This looks just ‘ok’ - I wish we could stop with the ‘retro’ art style thing. I’d rather games were made for the power of todays consoles rather than those of 20 years ago.
