@Vyse_the_Legend Yes, it was originally Japanese (and you can still consider the PlayStation brand as a whole Japanese), but the company itself is now American.
I mean, even the Wikipedia page says that they're an American company.
Not that the distinction really matters much, but I think this is why SIE is more Western-focused than Japanese-focused. The only console manufacturer whose headquarters are in Japan is technically Nintendo.
@PuppetMaster Maybe you already know this, but Bravely Default actually started development as a sequel to FF: The 4 Heroes of Light, but SE decided to make it into its own franchise later on. That's why they're so similar
@DennisReynolds Who said Microsoft signed a deal for this game? Isn't it more logical to assume they paid for a port instead, rather than thinking they deliberately wanted PlayStation to be excluded from a multiplatform release of a former Switch 2 exclusive? Remember, this is the same company that's launching Fable and Halo on PS5
@AdamNovice No worries. Even though SEGA uses to put a lot of their games on Game Pass at launch, they've always been reluctant to put Sonic games on the service for some reason. I guess they value the IP a lot, despite the issues they've faced
@AdamNovice Sonic Generations was not on Game Pass, neither were the latest Yakuza games (except for Pirate Yakuza, which came to Game Pass more than a year after its initial release). If you're gonna factor in non-day one releases like that, then you should also tell SEGA to stop putting their games on PS Plus.
If they did do this, it would only make Sony lose money. Blocking God of War from being playable on Project Helix would essentially be Sony refusing to accept Xbox players' money. The port is already done, Sony doesn't have to spend a dime to make it, and yet if they did prevent Xbox players from buying it, it would just give them incentive to pirate the game instead.
You do bring up an interesting point about third-party exclusives, though. For the last several years, Sony has coasted off of third-party exclusives that have released simultaneously on PS5 and PC (like Honkai Star Rail, Where Winds Meet, The Seven Deadly Sins, Nioh 3, Silent Hill Townfall, etc.). When the next Xbox releases, these types of exclusivity deals will be dead in the water. Either Sony is gonna have to pay third-party publishers to abandon PC entirely (which is highly unlikely, especially for the gacha games that Sony loves to moneyhat), or they're just gonna have to give up on third-party exclusives for the most part (other than the ones that they publish, that is).
@Sakai SneakersSO is a PlayStation fanboy that pretends to be an insider. He only posts negative rumors about Xbox, and he hasn't gotten anything right in more than a year. He doesn't know a damn thing about what Microsoft is thinking behind closed doors.
Remember, this is the same guy that said Playground Games wanted to be a PlayStation first-party studio, that Microsoft planned to cancel its next-gen hardware, and that Microsoft was gonna lay thousands of people off in January this year.
@themaladroit I don't think most of the money came from Helldivers 2. I'm not sure if this is true, but I saw someone claim that $700 million was from that game (including Xbox sales).
Since the next PlayStation will be pretty expensive compared to the PS5, we'll just have to wait and see if they can pull in the additional console users from PC that they desire. If not, then I think they'll go back to doing PC ports.
@themaladroit $2 billion is nothing to scoff at, though. And who knows if they'll be able to make that back with additional console sales. I think it's clear the real reason why they're doing this is because the next Xbox can play PC games
@carlos82 There were rumors that Sony was planning to do the same thing with God of War: Ghost of Sparta by putting it on Switch. But it seems they changed their mind on that, perhaps in part because both it and Lego Horizon aren't very good games.
Worth noting that Kiwi Talks hasn't gotten anything right as a leaker (just search his name up on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit), and a Guerilla dev themselves said that it was Sony's decision to bring the game to Switch.
"And all of this has come at the cost of its console ecosystem: there’s a growing sentiment that the PS5 has not lived up to expectations, with the lack of true exclusive titles often cited as a key contributing factor."
What cost? Sony has been gloating the past few years that the PS5 is the most profitable console they've ever released, and they've also touted record-breaking console sales. The PS5 is only barely behind the PS4, and those criticisms you mentioned are nothing more than passing sentiments you see from the occasional Internet addict. The PC strategy hasn't actually had a material negative impact on PlayStation console sales.
That is, unless you were expecting the PS5 to beat the PS2 in sales or something. Which will never happen.
Schreier's sources "cautioned that things could change in the future due to the unpredictable nature of the video-game industry and that Sony’s plans are constantly shifting."
Something tells me that, after Sony fails miserably to increase PlayStation console market share by a significant margin, they'll go back to doing PC ports 5 years from now.
This is not gonna go the way they think it is, especially not when the PS6 will be more expensive than ever before.
@IOI No, I wasn't referring to you, I completely agree with you. I was referring to others who make such excuses, which you can see in this comment section
@IOI If Sony shut down Santa Monica or Naughty Dog, people would still find a way to say "all these people complaining should have bought their games." Problem is, in Bluepoint's case, they didn't release any games under PlayStation to begin with. Their last two releases, Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, were both commercial successes, so you can't really blame fans for Sony mismanaging and shuttering the studio
@UltimateOtaku91 I dunno, I think Xbox making their tentpole games 1 year timed exclusives would be a good idea. They'd still eventually put the games on PlayStation, but at the same time they would also give people at least a minor reason to buy an Xbox or both an Xbox and a PlayStation.
I highly doubt Xbox will abandon their multiplatform strategy entirely, but unless Sony starts putting most of their games on Xbox, taking a timed exclusive approach to future Halo, Gears, etc. games would make sense to me and would encourage competition. You clearly do not need to put games on PlayStation (or Xbox) day-one in order to make money on the platform. Just look at Forza Horizon 5, which sold really well despite being a 4 year old game, and compare that to Doom: The Dark Ages, which had underwhelming sales on PS5.
@lazarus11 I understand, but when you only have two full-time staffers who are probably busy with other things and don't have the time to write an article due to time zones and whatnot, it makes sense why Pure Xbox is sometimes late to the party compared to Push Square. Maybe they should hire more people from other timezones, and not just the UK.
@LogicStrikesAgain Yes, that is true. I don't think they're gonna abandon their multiplatform initiative. But if what she's saying is true, it seems she does want to focus on Xbox consoles. So I don't think the hope for a next gen Xbox is dead
@Shepherd_Tallon @LogicStrikesAgain @UltimateOtaku91 You should always take everything a CEO says with a huge grain of salt, but it's worth mentioning some of the things that Asha said, which Push Square didn't mention in this article:
"Second, the return of Xbox.
We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build the expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world.
We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are. It connects us to the players and fans who invest in Xbox, and to the developers who build ambitious experiences for it."
So, to me, it doesn't sound like they're planning to get rid of Xbox consoles
@PuppetMaster If that was the case, then they wouldn't be bringing the majority of their games to Xbox. Highly doubt it has anything to do with audiences.
As for Bloober, I don't think you read the article from Pure Xbox that I linked. Bloober Team said that they signed a contract with Konami to make a game for PS5, Xbox, and PC. It being multiplatform is already set in stone. Unless they're working on some other mystery game that isn't related to Silent Hill, this basically debunks your argument.
@PuppetMaster Rather than there not being an audience for Silent Hill on Xbox and Nintendo, I think it's more likely that Sony moneyhatted both Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill Townfall, since they were both announced at the same time a few years ago.
Sony probably signed a deal with Konami to make these two games exclusive a few years ago, and although Konami would prefer to put their games on all platforms (as they're doing with MGS, Darwin's Paradox, Castlevania, Suikoden, etc), they're contractually obligated to make these titles exclusive for the time being.
There's no mention of an exclusivity deal anywhere on the Silent Hill website, but then again, there was also no mention of an exclusivity deal when Nioh 3 was announced, either. Only a few weeks ago did Sony confirm that a deal was in place for that game.
Judging by the number of reviews it got on the Xbox Store, it seems like Silent Hill 2 sold pretty well on Xbox, at least for a game that got absolutely no marketing whatsoever.
It also doesn't seem like Silent Hill 1 Remake will be a PlayStation exclusive, since Bloober Team confirmed a while ago that the next game they're making with Konami will be released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
@Jay767 To be fair, all of these games are also coming to Xbox and PC (in some cases Nintendo), except for Fishbowl due to being an India Hero Project game. So these particular games are not things that Sony is specifically investing in.
Sony is definitely trying, and succeeding, at dominating on most fronts, though.
@StitchJones If Steam is indeed available on the next Xbox (not sure it will be, I still have major doubts about this whole idea from Microsoft), then rest assured Microsoft and Sony will do absolutely nothing to prevent Sony games from being playable on it.
There is no way Sony would try to block their games from the Nexbox, since it wouldn't impact them negatively in the slightest. Buying Sony games via Steam on Xbox would be no different than buying them on PC.
@PuppetMaster I don't think this is a timed exclusive, seems like Sony has the marketing rights for the game because they haven't outright said it will be exclusive to PS5 or that PS5 is the only platform it will be on. Heck, they didn't even release a trailer for this game on the Konami channel. They're only using the trailer available on the PlayStation channel.
Seems to me Sony is doing what Microsoft did with Persona 3 Reload and the other Atlus games a few years ago, where they had an embargo to prevent Atlus from announcing other platforms aside from PC and Xbox. PlayStation fans were really pissed about that.
I doubt Konami would release an anime style JRPG exclusive to PS5 without even a PC port.
@Jay767 Sony funded the original Kena game as well as Death Stranding, FF7 Remake, Helldivers 2, etc. and yet they're still on Xbox. So no, if there's a timed exclusivity deal for this game then it may be possible for it to come to Xbox without Sony being directly involved. Just like with Death Stranding.
That was absolutely fantastic, easily the best State of Play in years. Leagues better than that awful PlayStation Showcase they held in 2023, where they announced Fairgames and the Gran Turismo movie.
Sony knocked it out of the park with this one. Interested in most of the games here.
I'm surprised it's not available on PC. Though it was a shadow drop so I assume they prioritized the PS5 version first. Wonder if, when this does probably come to PC, Sony will port it to Switch, as well.
@Northern_munkey In Japan, there are literally vending machines that sell used panties from teenage schoolgirls. Although they're mostly banned these days, stuff like this isn't really new. This was referenced once in Yakuza 0 btw.
@Scottyy There were/are still a lot of people on the Final Fantasy 7 and PlayStation subreddits insisting that Part 3 will "definitely" be a timed PS5 exclusive because Sony signed a deal for the entire trilogy (which has never has been confirmed, and doesn't actually exist).
@Shepherd_Tallon I heard that game has apparently been cancelled because they didn't have enough of a budget. Not fully sure, though, I don't think the devs provided any official statements about this

@UltimateOtaku91 No offense, but that's a very stupid reason to not buy a game.
By that logic, should Xbox players refuse to buy games that Sony took timed exclusivity deals on? Or is that too far?

@AdamNovice How many of these games launched on Game Pass? And, last I checked, Game Pass doesn't affect sales of games on PS5.
