We were all a bit shocked when LEGO Horizon Adventures was announced, and not because the game itself was a surprise, but because of the platforms it was coming to.
Co-developed by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo, the plastic action platformer was released simultaneously on PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
Obviously, making the game for Switch makes some sense given its younger-skewing audience, but developing first-party titles for other platforms is not something Sony is in the habit of, outside of some rare exceptions.

Well, according to the reputable Reece "Kiwi Talkz" Reilly, who has made a name for himself interviewing countless developers over the years, it wasn't Sony's choice to put the game on Switch.
"Lego Horizon only released on Switch because it was mandated by the Lego Group," he says on X.
He responds to another user, explaining that it isn't an educated guess; "it's info I know," he says, adding that "Sony views Nintendo as direct competition."
So, it sounds as though Sony put LEGO Horizon Adventures on Switch because it had to; it seems LEGO itself is behind that move.
In a weird hypothetical where the company wasn't involved with the game at all, Sony probably would've released the game on PS5 first and then PC later, and that would be that.
In hindsight it's a fairly obvious detail, but an interesting one all the same.
We expect Sony will be more careful about this sort of thing going forward, as it now appears to be backing away from releasing its first-party software on other platforms.
LEGO Horizon was a special case as that was apparently ordered by LEGO, and we imagine MLB The Show will continue to launch on all platforms. That's also mandated by the license holder, of course.
Aside from that, though, it really does seem like Sony is going to hunker down and just keep its PS Studios games to its own system.

Worth noting that Kiwi Talks hasn't gotten anything right as a leaker (just search his name up on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit), and a Guerilla dev themselves said that it was Sony's decision to bring the game to Switch.

Honestly out of the 3 platforms switch 2 has the best chance for selling playstation games on
Well it’s coming from a leaker so probably best to take it with a grain of salt but either way I’m not really convinced that Nintendo is really much of a “direct competitor” for Sony
I never expected anymore, it was pretty obvious it only went there because it's a Lego game

@rjejr there’s that. And also the fact that Japan studio games may be given to Bandai for re-releases.
And there is the rumor of Stellar Blade going multiplatform
@rjejr Kena’s coming to Switch as well and I’m pretty sure that had Sony funding.
@carlos82 There were rumors that Sony was planning to do the same thing with God of War: Ghost of Sparta by putting it on Switch. But it seems they changed their mind on that, perhaps in part because both it and Lego Horizon aren't very good games.
This doesn't make much sense. If they were so much against it, why let them make this game in the first place? Oh well, not that it matters to me
I do wonder how you they manged to get a Marvel exclusive license
I wonder how many copies it sold on Switch
I have read many comments here over the years that Nintendo wouldn’t be competition to PlayStation.
Despite Switch 1 massive 150+ million installbase, none of Lego Horizon, Patapon 1+2, Freedom Wars remastered, and Everybody's Golf Hot Shot receives any report if they sold well on the platform.
So, i'm not even sure what's the point of releasing these games on Switch.
@PuppetMaster From the sounds, none of those sold well at all.
I haven't played Lego Horizon, but isn't it supposed to be one of the worst Lego games? Not a good game to test the potential sales on Switch.
@PuppetMaster How did these remasters sell on PS4 and PS5? Maybe they just sold poorly on all the platforms including PS consoles.
Kind of a shame that they test the waters on Switch with such a meh game and call it quits from there.
@nessisonett @anoyonmus And those. 😂
I am interested if Kena 2 comes to Switch 2 since Kena 1 is but Sony seems to be funding 2 to take it from AA to AAA. Seems weird to announce porting the 1st game now w/ no mention of the 2nd they just announced. Switch 2 is supposed to be getting FF7 Part 3 (that thing get a name yet?) same day as PS5, though I do know that's Squenix.
Whether true or not, it being mandated to be on Switch wouldn't be shocking as that's what most people suspected. Anytime people from Guerrilla or LEGO were asked directly about it they'd dance around it or give a non-answer.
Oh no however will I get my live service fix D:
But seriously, it's been a while since Sony published a game I'd want to play on a Nintendo handheld anyway. Their major games typically work best on a big screen with pretty graphics.
I'm cool with it. Consoles need their exclusives.
@Max_the_German I have a PS5 and a Switch but I don't really see them as competition. I would love to see Sony do a handheld that directly competed with Nintendo. They would definitely need to step things up and diversify.
I seriously doubt Lego Horizon was a big seller period. They might as well go for a Xbox version, just for fun. It not like they are going to be making money off it otherwise.
Still don't understand why it didn't come out for the PS4 as well - I mean it's hardly a taxing game nor a corporate push to PS5 title. Might have well sold a few more copies?
That said, it wasn't a classic TT games so hey, maybe it wasn't worth it.
@DualWielding
Just speculation, but maybe because Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man, who Marvel really wanted to include in the MCU movies. So, Sony can negotiate a stronger exclusivity deal for Marvel's Spide-Man with the help of the film rights.
@rjejr
Maybe PushSquare doesn't consider MLB to be a full PlayStation 1st party game - maybe 2nd party since Sony doesn't own the MLB license/IP?
@Questionable_Duck Interesting... Reading that after this, and recalling my instinct upon hearing about it's release initially, I presume PlayStation wanted to use the Lego brand to appeal to the younger audience and they had to concede to it being on Switch for that opportunity, the two separate angles reinforce that to me, at least. But then what do I know. I've still got my PS4 copy of Zero Dawn in the backlog pile, could think it's already a pretty 'kid friendly' game when I get around to it on the 32nd of Julember... 🤣🤣
I never bought the argument that Lego had full control. As they'd probably have put it on Xbox as well like every other past Lego game. Plus why would Sony allow a deal that locks them out of any decision making of where one of its most popular franchises gets played?
