A big theme of the latest State of Play centred on Konami, and just how back the iconic Japanese publisher is.
Fans will recall there was a period where the company seemed more focused on Japanese gyms and pachinko than video games, but it’s now regularly churning out top-of-the-line titles, with last year’s Silent Hill F and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater being two examples.
Sony surrendered the stage to its long-time partner for a good 15 minutes during yesterday’s showcase, allowing it to introduce a new Castlevania and long-awaited Metal Gear Solid port.

But it also announced an all-new JRPG named Rev. NOiR, which is being produced by Nobuki Kadoi of Drakengard 2 fame.
He said of the project:
“This title is under development by passionate members, including myself, who are long-time fans of JRPGs. Meeting comrades, growth, and heartfelt moments that define JRPGs. We are striving to place these elements at the core of our narrative. We hope you’ll be able to feel the excitement of a new adventure beginning. The trailer you saw today is just a tiny little peek of the game. We will be sharing more updates, so please stay tuned!”
The press release mentions a “world shrouded in lightfall, a natural phenomenon that brings death to those it touches”.
There’s an amnesiac and a magical girl, both of whom will predictably form the core of the story.
But even the official blurb notes: “This title remains shrouded in mystery, with additional details to be revealed in future announcements”
An interesting announcement, then, and a reminder that Konami is taking things seriously again – but there’s probably not too much to get excited about here for now.
