You probably already know if this is a game for you. If you enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game back in the day, you'll absolutely love Scott Pilgrim EX, as it's simply a new and improved version of that same idea.
When most of Scott's band, Sex Bob-omb, goes missing — along with all their instruments — it's down to him, Ramona, and an unlikely group of allies to save them. Things get very alternate dimension-y as you do battle against demons, robots, and vegans in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up.
You can freely explore the game's map, with certain areas locked off behind story progress. It means the adventure is sort-of non-linear, and you have a degree of freedom in how you build your chosen characters, with numerous shops selling passive upgrades and permanent buffs.
Because the game knows you'll become quite strong quite quickly, the opening hour or two can feel strangely tough. Later encounters and boss battles can feel much easier once you're levelled up and dealing out bigger damage.
Even with the slightly skewed difficulty, combat is a lot of fun. There's a surprising amount of moves at your disposal, so much so we frequently forgot many of the more advanced techniques. Even so, the basic action is satisfying and dynamic.
There are lots of weapons and throwable items, assists you can call in, and special moves to employ when you're in a pinch. Each character has their own move set as well, so there's plenty to experiment with.
There's not much of a story going on; this is a mostly self-referential piece created by and for fans of the Scott Pilgrim universe. If you're into the wider fiction, this is more of the same vibe, though perhaps without the same narrative thrust.
It's just good fun. You can argue against some of the back-tracking and some slightly fiddly platforming, but by and large this is a solid beat-'em-up with a lot of personality.

Sorry, "fans will be in lesbians"? The hell does that mean? 😂
Errr. Interesting headline... exactly how far in to a lesbian will i get?
@charliecarrot its to do with a quote from the film 🤣
@bluemoon2008 @charliecarrot Obviously you both have not watched the movie (you totally should!)
@Ajazbo @stocko Ahh I was worried it would be a missed reference! I have seen the movie but my memory is crap
@charliecarrot It was 2010, so I know what you mean haha
@Quintumply I love games in this genre, but the old Scott Pilgrim game suffered from levels that went on for too long, and "bullet sponge" enemies that took too long to die. I don't have this issue with any other games in this genre, so.. is it better in this title?
I've been playing it the last few nights and it's a lot of fun. Glad we got a new Scott Pilgrim game.
Also the pixel art is gorgeous and the anime's art style transitioned really well.
Do we need provokative headlines?
Come on, les-be-honest.
@Czar_Khastik this is your best comment yet.
Bought a brand new living room set and had it delivered just in time for launch. I’ll be playing Scott Pilgrim EX from the comfort of my home-owned sectional.
@charliecarrot It's referring to lesbians, people who live in the Greek island of Lesbos (no seriously, that's what they're called)
One of my favorite quotes from the film, of which there are many.
I will probably get this, at some point.
Daring headline as people could jump on that one without context of the film. Is it worth it just for the headline?
"Unremarkable story" is definitely a Con I should've seen coming from a Review about a game in a Genre entirely about the gameplay on a PlayStation website.
Never get the praise for the movie and always thought it was whatever. I would only play this or the previous one as a co-op option when there is not a lot of them.
@Shaw_Brothers yes, it is.
It's isn't remotely offensive and those in the know, know. I laughed at it, and it takes a solid 5 second search in Google to find out.
Calmate.
@Shaw_Brothers no one cares! Isn't that swell?
@shoeses ...based on a graphic novel. So, you know, story.
I feel like I can confidently say this is the first time a title of an article has included the word 'lesbians', and no, I am not searching the Push Square website to confirm.
@stocko watched it around release, have zero memory of it though. Can barely remembered what game i last played and my Playstation is currently on.
@Scottyy the movie was amazing! the perfect weed flick back when i smoked; you didn’t like the silliness or the characters? the visual effects were amazing too. the story is whatever, sure, but the characters & visuals are what carries it
PS5 owners are already in lesbians. Aloy, Ellie, Atsu, etc, etc...
This game would have been cool as an Earthbound style RPG. I understand why it's a beat-em-up, but man, what a missed opportunity.
@LikelySatan Isn't this one based on the Netflix show?
@nomither6 Really liked those early era Edgar Wright movies. So kinetic in their camera work and fast with the jokes. Hot Fuzz is still my favourite.
@shoeses lol I didn't even know there was one.
