Does it? This game is softcore porn. Always was. Its target market is people who used to watch Baywatch with one hand. Just because it has tried to be something else in recent years does not mean that it succeeded or that we are losing something from its failure when we already have so many better fighters out there.

Destiny 2 did not fall short of expectations. Right up until the end its player count was eclipsing that of Marathon.
Either Sony or Bungie needs to admit the truth: they backed the wrong horse. All of this money, all of this time, should have been spent on Destiny 3, not Marathon.

I was going to say that it seems like a mistake releasing such niche games but the more I think about it, the more it seems like genius.
Statistically, kids do not buy new games. They are the ones playing Fortnite and COD to death. It is us oldies who still have a collection of single player games and we are still good part of the market. It may be the future to re-release the past.

We get if you love the game. And that is perfectly fine. But to say that a website that waited a whole month to review Marathon is now running negative spin stories is fantasy.

Graphical updates are just a little sad nowadays. Its a bit clearer with a bit of extra lighting. And no doubt requires a thousand quid telly to get the most out of it.
I was spoilt by the days that graphics were exciting. We will never experience a thrill like seeing MGS2 for the first time ever again.

The world has changed so much since this story was in its infancy - namely Trump and AI.
Maybe they felt like the story they had ready to go already felt a bit dated and it needed a rewrite? I dunno, just thinking. But a game releasing in 2026 with a narrative set in the Biden-era just is not going to work imo.

I feel sorry for kids today. All they have to get excited for is a slightly clearer blade of grass after buying an £800 ''Pro'' console.

Do you know what was actually ''Pro''? Going from the PS1 to the PS2. Going from the top down GTA2 to the fully 3D GTA3. Going from MGS1 to MGS2 and seeing an ice cube melt in real time.

And Sony wonders why there is no enthusiasm for the PS6.

Marathon was not a Concord level failure, but it is indeed a failure.
The best metric of all in 2026 is not player numbers, it is streaming numbers. Who is getting rich off the back of these games? How many people are tuning in? And as someone who watches a LOT of both Twitch and Youtube, I can tell you first hand that Marathon is barely a drop in the ocean right now.
