As it promised, Marvel’s Wolverine dev Insomniac has already started responding to the intense criticism aimed at its latest PS5 exclusive – as sales analysts predict the title is on track to be a major Sony success.

A new hotfix, available to download now, reduces the opacity and intensity of the title’s controversial ‘Scent Trails’, which have been used as a lightning rod for robust feedback on the foray.

Those who’ve missed the online discourse (congratulations) may not know that Sony’s latest superhero exclusive has been utterly eviscerated on social media, with some reasonably contemplating the state of modern AAA gaming – and others looking to boost their engagement rates.

Among the criticisms, some have pointed to Logan’s “scent trail” – amusingly referred to as a “blue fart trail” by some – which is intended to reflect the character’s “hunting” capabilities.

While it’s not ever-present – as some bad actors would like you to believe – it does highlight the route to some collectibles and important items when you’re in their near vicinity. It’s also used for story purposes in other moments.

Some feel this is a culmination of the “hand holding” that’s become more present in AAA games of late. Other criticisms include “painted surfaces” highlighting the main path.

In its patch notes, Insomniac says it’s exploring ways to disable the “scent trail” entirely in the future, which should please those frustrated by its inclusion.

In the meantime, you can see the difference to the opacity in the hotfix available now courtesy of the RealRadec post below:

None of this controversy appears to be stopping Marvel’s Wolverine from selling, because analytics firm Alinea has released some impressive predictions for the game.

As always, it’s worth underlining that this company’s methodology is unknown, and there’s an ongoing debate over how accurate its numbers are.

These are absolutely not official, so treat them as estimates until Sony makes an announcement.

However, it claims the game is off to an extremely strong start, making it the sixth top grossing PS5 release of 2026 already.

Analyst Rhys Elliot predicts the game has sold 1.9 million units in around three days, netting it a cool $130 million in revenue. He adds that around 23% of those copies were physical.

According to Alinea data, that means the Insomniac outing has already outsold the lifetime total of Death Stranding 2 on the PS5, and it’s even outpacing big global hits like Ghost of Yotei.

We’ll need to wait for official information from Sony, but it’s a strong start for the game, which looks set to build on Marvel’s Spider-Man’s success and sell to a casual audience perhaps untainted by enthusiast discourse.

I suppose there’s a question as to whether the reviews will chop off Logan’s legs and prevent the title from selling well overtime – but broadly, based on what I’ve seen, the consumer response to the game has been much more positive than the critics.

Perhaps this is one of those titles, like Crimson Desert earlier in the year, that’s going to connect with consumers much better than reviewers. (Although we enjoyed it and gave it an 8/10!)
