Price Hiked PS5 Endured Sony's Worst May in Over 25 Years 1

Spiralling hardware costs look poised to do untold damage to the games industry, with the recently price hiked PS5 forcing Sony to endure its worst May since 2000 in the United States.

According to Circana data shared by Mat Piscatella, PS5 registered a terrifying 58% slide in unit sales year-over-year, and a 43% drop in spending.

While it remained the second best-selling system of the month behind the Switch 2, average PS5 pricing increased 32% year-over-year to $672. Obviously, the pricier PS5 Pro is playing a part in that, but it shows the torrid situation the industry finds itself in.

It’s worth noting that practically everyone’s been struck by the memory pricing crisis: Xbox suffered its worst May ever last month as well, and announced further price increases just yesterday. Its unit sales are about to collapse to virtually nothing, and who knows how much longer Sony will be able to hold onto its current price point?

In more positive news, overall industry spend actually increased 3% year-over-year, led by a strong software slate and the continued popularity of the Switch 2.

007 First Light topped the charts, ahead of Forza Horizon 6, which still isn’t available on the PS5. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight rounded out the top three positions, reflecting a strong month for new releases.
