Re: Battleborn's Probably Maybe Possibly Going Free-to-Play Soon

Boerewors

@Tasuki
The game is already out and paid for, maintenance can't be that expensive and not patching it and keeping the servers up would be disrespectful to the 23 people playing it daily. So I'd say just make it f2p and hope people will spend some money on it.

A "trial version" will probably be f2p with rotating characters that are free or 2 or 3 you're allowed to play, I don't understand why Pitchford has to "juggle" these terms again as if going f2p is such a bad thing. I don't see it as admitting defeat, it's just adapting to the reality of the current marketplace. But Pitchford thinks he's still the magician he once was; when he was pulling rabbits from hats he tricked people and was entertaining at it, but in this industry he isn't fooling anyone anymore after his many, many lies, tricks and cover- ups.

The subtitle of the article reminds me a bit of how we say 'yes' (translated: no, yes) or 'no' (translated: yes, no). When in doubt or when we totally agree with something that was said we even throw in the occasional "no... yes... no..." or "yes, no, yes!", so I guess we speak 'Pitchfordish'

Re: DriveClub VR Races at a Reduced Rate for Seasoned Veterans

Boerewors

I'm so mad at myself for passing up on Amazon's offer of a steering wheel recently: £150 for a brand new Logitech G29...

Driveclub VR alone is reason enough to spend that kinda money on a steering wheel - I'd even consider £200 at this point - cause that game is everything I imagined VR to be. It's not only an excellent display of the tech and a perfect fit for VR, it's a good game on its own merits. Driving and looking around in your car makes you actually feel like you're inside a virtual car... It's a pretty weird sensation because the quality of the screen makes you realize you're not in an actual car obviously, but it handles like one and driving one feels like you're driving through an actual virtual world; it's exactly what I've always wanted out of VR and it'll be the go-to game to show off the headset.

Re: PS4 Slim Sales Off to a Slow Start in the UK

Boerewors

The slim isn't a real upgrade and I really can't see who it's for. Clearly it's supposed to be for casual gamers, but at the price it's currently at I don't think it's a good proposition. It should've been priced $250 to really get the families, "Blu Ray & Netflixers" and CoD & FIFA/ Madden dads on board.

The One S is exactly how a Slim model is done; it's sexy as Barker and features an awesome gimmick with its 4K Blu Ray player. It offers a lot of bang for your buck, especially the FIFA/ Madden bundles that are going for $269, and it feels like a console that'll last you a couple of years because it's future- proof.

The Pro is priced very competitively though and Sony has put MS in a tight spot: offering a slightly better experience for $100+ more simply won't go down with most consumers and leaving an UHD Blu Ray player to shave off some of the price can't be seriously considered because the One S has one. So MS will have to take a huge loss on every unit sold not to have an even more disastrous package as the One with the Kinect was.

The prices for the older PS4 models are completely insane btw! I ordered a couple at Argos to send back home for just £150 with Lego Star Wars, the SW force awakens blu Ray AND FIFA 17! FIFA is more catwalk simulator than it is a football game, so I'll sell the copies for bout £30 each and within a month the entire Western Cape can throw away their PS2s (really) and PS3s to play Lego SW on their £120 PS4!

(The PS 2.0 Headsets with the virtual 7.1 DS are also priced really nice on Amazon btw at just £49)

Re: Amazon UK Sells FIFA 17, LEGO Star Wars PS4 Bundles for £149

Boerewors

@Drawfull
A shame isn't it! I already had my CC out and was ready to buy some

This is exactly what I was hoping for when rumours of a Pro were going round; Amazon and other big retailers need to clear stock so not only retail prices will plummet, the second hand market has to move in the same direction.

I can now buy 3 used European PS4s in excellent shape with some games thrown in for the same amount of money you'll get just one console for in South Africa. And with prices like these lots of friends and family are actually able to buy a brand new console instead of having to chug along with their PS3 or even PS2.

Re: Sacked Man United Manager Louis van Gaal Wanted to Bring VR to Old Trafford

Boerewors

The world of football needs to take huge leaps when it comes to technology. They're still a bunch of guys that would've been car dealers or pimps if they hadn't been able to kick a ball or coach (Big Sam is such a beautiful example of a 2nd hand car dealer) and they're conservative as hell.

In sports like Rugby, Field Hockey, American Football, Basketball, Baseball etc technology and statistics play a huge role, whereas in football players still use methods, tactics and technology from centuries ago. The only technology most football player use these days is a PS4 to play FIFA on, so it's obvious they're way behind the curve; if they would adapt to what this decade has to offer, they would've been playing PES instead.

Re: The Division Is Still the Best Selling Game of 2016, Ubisoft Reminds Us

Boerewors

Must be hard for the Rainbow 6: Siege devs to see how the Division has shattered their sales. Everyone that I know that played the Division has long since stopped with a bit of a sour taste in the mouth, my friends who bought Siege however have almost all become hardcore players at this point.

I recently heard the game has a really high retention rate, so it's quite unfortunate it never really stood a chance; the messaging surrounding the game simply was too confusing and Ubi couldn't get the hype for it going.

Both games are cheap on PSN now (in PAL territories at least) and I think both will be well worth the current price of admission (about £20-£22). Even though the Division hasn't delivered on its promise, I think there's a lot of fun to be had. And in Siege you can apparently have as much fun as in the golden days of online console gaming.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: PS4 Numbers Skyrocket Thanks to Slim Release and Persona 5

Boerewors

@themcnoisy
It's definitely better from our pov, but it doesn't suit Japanese lifestyle and culture as much as mobile does. The Japanese spend incredible amounts of money on mobile gaming (they spend $40 on average (!) if they end up playing a game, the second most money spent on average is seen in South Korea: $3.50. Japanese numbers are insane!) and mobile games suit the Japanese desire for quirkiness and more importantly: mobile games are socially accepted.

Lots of the Japanese hits are proper games btw, unlike most of the mobile games we see here, with huge development costs. You'll always lack a proper input method, but can't the same be said of FPSs on console? They seem to be doing alright though.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: PS4 Numbers Skyrocket Thanks to Slim Release and Persona 5

Boerewors

@get2sammyb
I've seen em and although I realize they've had their best opening in history for the Persona franchise, I expected more. The market has shifted more towards purchases in the launch window, where up to 90% of all revenue is made, but more importantly I've witnessed Persona becoming a more mainstream franchise.

Persona 5 is still a niche game when compared to FFXV, especially internationally, but it's become a very recognizable IP in Japan. And where people love to see big companies and their juggernaut games fail, Atlus still has a lot of goodwill, something I thought Persona 5 would benefit from especially backed by the positive critical reception of the game.

I actually expected a close race in Japan between Persona 5 and FFXV, which seems quite silly now, unless FFXV fails to meet Squeenix' expectations. Home console releases of Final Fantasy used to draw crowds in Japan and I believe Persona has become a Japanese icon in its own right so I expected nothing less; now I really wonder if the big one, FFXV, will be able to surpass the million sales mark in Japan... I'm afraid they won't.

Re: Persona 5 Is the Fastest Selling Persona Game in 20 Years

Boerewors

I honestly expected more: persona has almost become a household name, at least for gamers, but it's still a title from a company you're rooting for, unlike Squeenix's FF for instance. It is big enough to warrant good sales, but small enough to maintain that underdog feeling.

Re: Japanese Sales Charts: PS4 Numbers Skyrocket Thanks to Slim Release and Persona 5

Boerewors

I'm actually a bit disappointed by Persona 5's sales. This installment seemed to be the most anticipated yet and Persona is more of a mainstream brand these days. Maybe it'll keep on selling, but I honestly expected lifetime sales of 600k in Japan, a figure they probably won't reach. Japan just isn't really interested in home consoles anymore; remember that the 90k they've sold now also include the sales they've missed the last few weeks because of the Slim announcement.

Re: PS4 Pro Requires Very Little Investment from Developers

Boerewors

PSP requires quite the investment from the players though.

@XtemmA
A Bloodborne with a solid 60fps on 1080p would justify buying a PS pro in my book. There are few games where frames per second matter so much as in the Souls games, unfortunately their optimization hasn't been too kind on us.

They should also remake the original Dark Souls and Demon Souls by the way, I'm willing to bet that would even sell more than the original games did with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 being the commercial successes they were. Although there's no PS event planned for December yet, I'm holding thumbs that those'll be announced there.

Re: TGS 2016: NieR: Automata Has an 'Auto Mode' that Fights Enemies For You

Boerewors

Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U had this mode where you could swipe the screen and the magic would happen almost automatically. Although I never used it, it made my wife feel like a pro gamer; she would pull off combos that otherwise she would've never seen and she could play the game at the pace and skill level that suited her.

I used to think that harder games made for better gamers, which is partly true perhaps, but it also makes for less of them. How many kids or casuals would seriously consider keep on playing Mario if it wasn't for the white invincibility leaf or buy Bayonetta 3 when they got stuck on the first fight in part 2?

I know we as PushSquare readers like to think of ourselves as some sort of secret gaming society that should be setting all of gaming's rules, but fact of the matter is that we don't make up the majority of gamers... Most people don't live games, they just wanna play them.

Re: FIFA 17 Gets Some Great Graphical Upgrades Thanks to New Engine on PS4

Boerewors

@rjejr
Funny you mention a "2x2 cube"; that's exactly how Sony wants to offer 'real' 4K gaming on the Pro, by making a 2x2 cube out of 1 pixel! That isn't upscaling though, because that won't sell many units, it's just 4K to the eye...only an Xbot would say otherwise

I'm absolutely sure it'll look wonderful btw, but the Slim could probably do the same with games that hit 1080p. The algorithm behind the technique is quite fancy, it determines how 1 pixel should become 4 by taking into account all other pixels that are becoming 4 and making it appear as if it's actual 4K instead of stretching pixels to fit the "2x2 cube", but isn't really taxing on the hardware. The extra horsepower is probably to make sure every game will actually hit the 1080p mark, since it doesn't like upscaling from 900p, but I'd reckon they could let the slim output 4K with a firmware upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, I think upgrading to the Pro is worth it at just $399 when you own a 4K screen. People say that their screens can upscale a 1080p image themselves, they don't need a console for that, and although these people are right, they're also wrong. The PSP (jup!) uses the sophisticated technique I explained earlier, which is way better than the upscaling we see on TVs, but the most important bit is that your reaction time takes a huge hit when you let your tv do the upscaling; 4K TVs that are upscaling full HD images aren't fit for gaming, they need an actual 4K input -whether it's "fake" or not- to perform adequately.

OT: PES 4 LIFE!

Re: Review: PES 2017: Pro Evolution Soccer (PS4)

Boerewors

I believe there's not a single game that deserves a 10/10, especially for a sportsgame that's impossible to achieve the way I score games. That being said, PES 2017 is the closest thing to a perfect score I've ever seen in a football game; the game's an absolute delight to play.

People who are still playing FIFA just because they want to 'press start' immediately when a 1:1 Emirates Stadium or a shouting Mourinho is shown or because they don't wanna spend 10 minutes importing some files with team names are really missing out. FIFA is left so far behind this year that it reminds me of the PS2 days. There will always be a large group of people who choose flashy presentation and lots of licenses over a flawless game on the pitch, but I honestly hope PES will get the chance it deserves.

If FIFA is like Pogba, PES is like Messi; it's raw power and athleticism vs finesse and style.

Re: Sony 'Pleasantly Surprised' by Strong PS4 Pro Pre-Orders

Boerewors

@get2sammyb
I still feel Sony should be targetting the various non- gaming uses for VR way more; by picking the name PS VR they've made it clear that they feel gaming is their "entrance" to the VR world, when in fact I believe it'll end up being their biggest hurdle. Gaming on current VR headsets is kinda cool, for once or twice, and then you go back to playing actual games. VR is all about experiences, experiences you can't get elsewhere or are too expensive/ too much hassle for regular folks.

Of course there should be gaming in VR and some "experiences" (hate the word, but it sums it up so nicely) can be enhanced by adding gaming elements, but the majority of the apps available on PS VR should be focusing on a way broader spectrum than they currently are. There are maybe 2 million gamers willing to spend money on VR gaming in a world where VR gaming is 10 times better as it currently is, but there are at least 100 million people interested in owning a personal cinema, in visiting live games of their favorite team, in having a front row seat at the sold out Riyonce Sweeft concert, in visiting cities all around the globe, experiencing festivals, dive in deep blue seas and fly like an eagle.... There are so many things people would use VR for, yet Sony focuses on gaming.

With Sony Pictures and Sony Music they could single handedly change how we perceive VR as customers and also make those divisions profitable again. It's not the movies or music that suck, it's the way we have to consume it; VR could change all that! $25 for the latest album of one of them popstars is a lot of money, especially with Spotify and less legal alternatives around, but if I get to be in the studio with the artist, watch him/her perform some tracks live and experience one of the videoclips as if I'm part of the crew, $25 suddenly doesn't seem that bad. If I have to pay $20 for a UFC fight I feel robbed, if I get to switch between 4 360 cameras in the top of the corners however, I'm waving my CC before the fight's even announced.

I can think of 100 ways VR could change the way we consume media, interact with people or just have fun... Unfortunately Sony is just focussing on one of them.

@adf86
Lol. Nintendo is Woody Allen: they do some nasty at times, but damnit if we don't love em

Re: Sony 'Pleasantly Surprised' by Strong PS4 Pro Pre-Orders

Boerewors

@get2sammyb
Unexpected, but not totally untrue imho. I feel an upgrade for Xbox is far more necessary because of the type of first party games they have on offer and 3rd party games they associate themselves with. Xbox is more about the huge blockbusters where everything is bigger and better; the Xbox is the Michael Bay amongst consoles....

PS has a wider variety of games on offer, games of which most will be perfectly playable without having state of the art graphics. The only game that's associated with PS4 atm that has fans that will really adore more graphical spectacle is a Xbox game at heart, CoD. Most other games work perfectly fine on 1080p.

I've been lucky enough to have had some PS VR time myself and I know it runs just fine, but we've only seen some small PS made and/ or curated demos. I'm afraid not all games will run so smoothly and I even expect a game like RIGS, which ran way better than expected, to crumble under the extra load the moment it's taken out the controlled setting. I think eventually we'll need a PSpro to have meaningful VR experiences and I hope Sony won't let the old hardware hold it back; I know it's not in their official plans, but they'll have to let go of their PS4 parity requirements because else PS VR will be going nowhere.

Re: Sony 'Pleasantly Surprised' by Strong PS4 Pro Pre-Orders

Boerewors

@rjejr
I've done exactly that: ordered a Pro just in case...

If the old PS4 can't handle VR smoothly, fan noise included, I'm going for the Pro, but if it performs just fine I see no reason to jump ship this early. In terms of new hardware I'm actually looking forward to Scorpio more to be honest, but that might just be me. PS simply doesn't need better hardware for what they're trying to achieve. Heck, most of their latest titles in Japan still come to PS3.

I feel Xbox on the other hand needs the power of the Scorpio to get across what they're all about; hard hitting 4K FPSs, racing and sportsgames with the volume dialed up to 11 while some of your jock friends are cheering you on as you drink tequila out of barely legal girl's belly button...

Re: MLB The Show Survives as Sony San Diego Restructures

Boerewors

There are rumours that Sony wasn't pleased with MLB the Show being finished exactly on schedule every year; it was the constant rejection of one of Sony's core values when it comes to releasing 1st party exclusives, that set the whole thing in motion.

Re: Review: PES 2017: Pro Evolution Soccer (PS4)

Boerewors

@AFCC
Calling PES arcadey when compared to FIFA just gives to show you haven't been playing either PES or FIFA -or both- for quite some years now. PES has had a really rough last gen with FIFA clearly being the better of the 2, but the last years and especially this year PES is the number 1 football game FOR ME (!!!).

Just because a game is fun to play, doesn't mean it's arcadey.

Re: Review: PES 2017: Pro Evolution Soccer (PS4)

Boerewors

@dryrain
If you stay loyal to FIFA over some licenses, knowing there's a better football game waiting for you, you deserve what EA's serving up. After PES2016 I was so afraid Konami would mess it up just like FIFA has been doing the last couple of years (they haven't only gotten worse relatively, but literally gameplay wise), but after playing it for a couple of hours now I know this is the best dang football game to ever grace our console.

Take your matchday experiences, licenses and screaming Mourinhos... I'll take the better game where it actually matters, thank you

Re: Hot Shots Tennis Aces Its Way to PS4 This Week

Boerewors

@get2sammyb
I really hope so! I'm a sucker for these games, played a total of at least 150 hours on the PS3 and Vita version, but I do feel that just offering Golf is too little. They have an unique oppurtunity to have a monopoly on quality arcade sportsgames in a market where there's too much emphasis on true simulation. Golf, Tennis, Football, Golfcart races, Basketball, Cricket, Rugby, American football, Baseball etc etc are all sports that would be wonderful if we had some fun arcadey multiplayer games of and Clap Hanz has the know how and distinct visual style to make it a succes.

But unfortunately they seem to caught up with the social functions of the game that they forgot where their strength lies. It's wonderful to play games online, but the underlying mechanics should be number one, not the social part. They even botched up their cute style to have wannaMiis (wannabe Miis). They've been working on this for so long now that I expect a huge surprise regarding playable sports; if it's just some Golf and minigames, I'm gonna be really disapointed.

Re: Hot Shots Tennis Aces Its Way to PS4 This Week

Boerewors

I always liked Everybody's Tennis better

Clap Hanz is taking so long with their new game and leaving a huge gap in the PS4 catalog in the meanwhile. They should've made the tropical island they're making now and include all types of sports in the Hot Shots style; Golf, tennis, football, baseball, basketball etc etc. they could've locked every game behind a paywal, say $9,99 per game and have people use the island as a new version of Home where you meet people, play some games and chat a bit... They could even use VR for that.

Re: Uncharted 4's PS4 Slim Bundle Is An Absolute Steal

Boerewors

If I go ugly this festive season, I'm going all out with the Pro! The One S is how you do a slim version, Sony is aiming for people to get the way better proposition for just $100 more imo.

The original PS4 is by far the most value you'll get for your money and if clearances of stock lead to similar prices as we've seen with the Xbox One a few weeks back, I'm positive I'll be shipping lots of units to Africa the next months

Re: The Elder Scrolls Online Runs in Native 4K on PS4 Pro

Boerewors

@leucocyte
I think from this console on, the term "native 4K" is going to be stretched a bit. The tech that's probably going to be used to get the 4K image isn't true upscaling, but it isn't what I would call "native 4K" either. It's the same discussion as you can have with PSVR that is "natively" pushing out 120fps, which is just as true as saying it are actually 60 frames that are each copied and appear to the eye as 120fps. The algorithms they use to produce the 4K image are insanely smart, but devs don't have to aim for true 4K to get the "4K" image.

In my book it doesn't really matter as long as we as consumers have the feeling we are watching 4K. Combine this with HDR, which is the true gamechanger, and I think we can finally speak of true "next gen" gaming.

Re: This Is the Best PS4 Pro Sales Pitch You'll See Today

Boerewors

Lol, guess who that director is :') He might as well have said it, Kojima and Cerny are besties

I think the Pro looks ridiculous btw and the lack of UHD blu ray support is a huge oversight for a company like Sony, but Mark Cerny just sold me one.

I remember seeing him live at GDC once and I was so impressed by his knowledge and there was no single doubt that there was a guy up on stage that loves doing what he does. I've seen Jackie T. being mentioned, the marketing manchild, and although he would've nailed the PS4 Pro's presentation, he could've easily been talking about the new Ford 150; Cerny is one of ours though.

Impressed as I was by Cerny I looked up some old interviews of him and I found one where he was introducing the PS4 to the Japanese public. I expected his part being dubbed, but then he started speaking in his calm manner, and it turned out the guy is fluent in Japanese as well! That was the point where admiration turned into full blown jealousy!

Re: PSN Down For Third Time in Two Weeks

Boerewors

The minute Madden season begins, PSN starts having hiccups. I'm not saying it's just Madden, but Madden is always the kick off for online season with lots of new releases and tons of extra people online. This will only get worse as the months progress, with inevitable downtimes during the festive season, and we'll all be told once more it's DDOS'ing kids at it again.

Re: Rumour: PS4 Slim Has an Overheating Problem? We Wouldn't Worry Just Yet

Boerewors

All I know is that the people here in SA are loving this slim and 4K model already; because of the new models there are insane offers on "regular" PS4s at the moment. A big German retailer is offering 2 PS4s for about €399 and I've ordered quite a few already for some PS4less folks here.

The PS Neo is the best thing to happen to 3rd world gaming since the PS2!

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your PlayStation Meeting 2016 Expectations?

Boerewors

@rjejr
Squeenix just reserved the money on my Credit Card, which is kinda odd in a month where you aren't gonna ship the CE imo.

The PC is for myself and my wife to enjoy as well. I gamed on my iMac and MacBook from time to time, mostly football manager, but it was time for a decent PC. Our other PC is 5 or 6 years old, so it wouldn't run anything besides WoW, now the kids have a PC with a gtx980ti which I picked up on the cheap.

But I like new toys just a tad too much; if there's a new console out, I can't just sit around and wait till the price drops... I need it right away.

Re: Yep, Final Fantasy XV Is Still Very Pretty Indeed

Boerewors

@rjejr
This is getting worse and worse, innit? My biggest gripe with the CE is that the formerly "exclusive" Noctis figure went up for pre order just 2 or 3 weeks after I ordered the CE. I'm crazy bout FF, but I'm an even bigger Play Arts Kai fan (although lately they've been screwing us), so I had no choice but to order.... Turns out I can get it for $100 as well...

Re: Yep, Final Fantasy XV Is Still Very Pretty Indeed

Boerewors

@AhabSpampurse
Nope, holding out till my Collector's Edition arrives. I wanna soak it all in when it finally launches this month. I haven't seen or read anything FFXV related because I don't wanna spoil the fun; I've heard there are several hours of gameplay online already made available by Squeenix, that's just ridiculous!

Re: The PS4 Slim Looks Much, Much Nicer Than You Think It Does

Boerewors

They better announce an Elite Controle (DS Plus?) in September or I'll be forced to play BF1 and TF2 on the One. Hasn't Sony been paying attention when the Elite controller was sold out for months on end? There is a huge demand for these high quality peripherals and it's time Sony put their money where their mouth is and show they're truly "for the players".
